Worrying Wears Out Cells And Your DNA Pays The Price

If you get stressed out just thinking about what a bad day you’re about to have, your cells are aging faster. A study of about four dozen women shows that anticipating stress shortens telomeres, DNA-protectors that help fight chronic disease. The result: aged cells more vulnerable to cancer, stroke and heart disease.

The study at the University of California at San Francisco, scheduled for the May issue of the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity, found that a tendency to worry about being stressed puts you at increased risk of shorter telomeres.

“(Our results)… suggest that the major forms of stress in your life may influence how your respond to more minor forms of stress, such as losing your keys, getting stuck in traffic or leading a meeting at work,” says researcher Aoife O’Donovan, Ph.D. “Our goal is to gain better understanding of how psychological stress promotes biological aging so that we can design targeted interventions that reduce risk for disease in stressed individuals…”
