Robert O. Young - author of the "pH Miracle" book

Bad news continues to accumulate for "pH Miracle Living" quack Robert O. Young

March 16, 2016.

Last night was one of those nights where, for whatever reason, I ran out of steam. Whether it was residual effects from the change to daylight savings time this weekend or just a day in the operating room, I don't know, but I crashed on the couch hard, at least until lighting and thunder from the storms rolling through between 2 and 3 AM woke me up for a little while.
Fortunately, I do have a little tidbit to post, a very good one as well. Remember, the "pH Miracle Living" quack, Robert O. Young? He claims to be a naturopath, but even that claim, like pretty much everything he claims, seems to be dubious at best. (Yes, he's even a fake quack.) Basically, to Young, cancer, AIDS, sepsis, and basically all diseases are due to "excess acid," and the cure is "alkalinization."
I first discovered Young nine years ago, and, since then, I've discussed his extreme quackery from time to time on this blog. Young claims to be able to treat cancer and—as is the case with so many quacks like him—a wide variety of other serious diseases, such as lupustype I diabetes (you read that right, not type II diabetes), metastatic prostate cancer, and cancer in general. Not surprisingly, Young is also quite antivaccine, publishing anecdotes from parents who believe their child is "vaccine damaged" and appeals to support antivaccine groups like the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC).
Perhaps the most famous incident involving Young was his treatment of Kim Tinkham. At the time she encountered Young in 2008, Tinkham had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, described as stage III, and was being urged to undergo surgery. She refused. In the end, Tinkham paid the ultimate price for her trust in Young.
When last I visited Young's sordid tale, he had been convicted of practicing medicine without a license, but the jury had deadlocked on the other charges, the ones that would garner him some serious jail time, the charge of fraud being the most prominent one.
Beautifully, Young's still in jail, and, as promised by the district attorney the last time I wrote about him, he is going to be tried again on the deadlocked charges:
Author of the well-known “pH Miracle” books, and philosophy, Young already was placed in prison Feb. 3. following being found guilty of two charges of practicing medicine without a license.
However a hung jury, after deliberating two weeks, found him innocent of one charge of practicing medicine without a license and didn’t convict him of six fraud and grand theft charges. Jury members voted 11-1 to convict on the two medical charges but deadlocked 8-4 on fraud charges.
Prosecutors said they would retry Young, 64, on the six fraud charges. “We have victims who are entitles to get verdicts,” Deputy District Attorney Gina Darvas said after refiling charges.
These are the charges:
Prosecutors in their original 13-page complaint, said Young charged four terminally ill patients at least $50,000 each for treatment. one paid more than $120,0 Prosecution witnesses included family members of cancer patients who had gone to the center and subsequently died.
Pfingst said people sought help from Young specifically because he was a naturopathic practitioner and not a medical doctor. Young never said his technique would cure cancer, Pfingst said. Needles used for intravenous treatments were applied by licensed doctors and nurses, he said.
Quacks like Young frequently retreat to this claim when busted. Never mind that Young has explicitly claim that cancer is cells "spoiled by acid" and that reversing it is easy with an "alkaline diet." Of course, quacks frequently use weaselly language with plausible deniability, a "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" sort of tactic that says they can cure cancer without actually explicitly saying it, in order to be able to defend themselves by claiming that they never told the patient that their quackery would cure them. Never mind that Young's multiple books and websites are bursting with claims about how cancer and all manner of diseases can be reversed by his methods.
So basically Young is at least as bad as Stanislaw Burzynski.
After nine years of following this quack's exploits and noting that while his trial was pending he was still traveling all over promoting his "pH Miracle Living" claims, continuing to bilk dying patients, and being very active on Twitter and social media promoting his business, I also take no shame in feeling intense schadenfreude over this:
Young had been out of jail on $100,000 bail earlier this year as his trial started and stopped several times before concluding. He even toured Europe during the last year, continuing to give large public lectures and conduct private consultations. With his convictions, however, his bail was increased to $700,000. His supporters have raised only $16,000 through an online crowdsourcing site for legal bills to date.
Young’s attorney, high-profile former San Diego District Attorney Paul Pfingst, told Vista Superior Court Judge Richard Whitney last week that Young was tapped out financially. A public defender now will represent him.
Yes! True, I have some doubts that Young is truly broke and suspect he must have substantial funds hidden in offshore bank accounts that he can't access from prison. Also, given that he is now facing a civil suit by a woman with stage IV ovarian cancer who was advised by him not to undergo conventional medical treatment. Even so, it is good to see him experience what so many of his patients did: The extraction of large quantities of his wealth. True, this time it was mostly legal fees and bail, but it's still good to see.
It would be even better to see Young spend the rest of his life in prison. Given that Young is now 63, it might not be outside of the realm of possibility, although I'd be surprised if he drew a sentence long enough to guarantee that.
Here's hoping I'm surprised in the coming year. Here's also hoping that Young will be forced to use prison food to "alkalinize" himself for many years to come.

If there's one thing that's frustrating about the U.S. justice system, it's just how slow the wheels of justice grind. For example, it's hard to believe that it was over two years ago that "pH Miracle" quack Robert O. Young was arrested for fraud, grand theft, and practicing medicine without a license, producing one of my favorite images ever on this blog, that of Young in a blue prison jump suit. The only way it could have been better would have been if it had been an orange jumpsuit, but unfortunately a contact in San Diego tells me that San Diego County doesn't use orange jumpsuits for its…
There is no doubt in my mind that Robert O. Young is among the worst cancer quacks I have ever encountered. I’ve never been able to figure out how he manages to continue to practice after over 20 years, given the egregiousness of his quackery. Indeed, I was overjoyed when I learned back in January when finally—finally!—I got to see Young in a prison jumpsuit being hauled before a judge after having been arrested and charged with 18 felony counts of grand theft and practicing medicine without a license, as well as administering intravenous treatments in an unlicensed facility. As I noted at…
Being a cancer surgeon and researcher, naturally I tend to write about cancer a lot more than other areas of medicine and science. It's what I know best. Also, cancer is a very common area for unscientific practices to insinuate themselves, something that's been true for a very long time. The ideas don't change very rapidly, either. Drop a cancer quack from 2014 into 1979, and he would probably be right at home. Of course, part of the reason is because the "elder statesmen" of cancer quackery today were just getting their starts in 1979. Still, the same ideas keep recurring even as far back…

Two women died of breast cancer yesterday. One was named Kim Tinkham. One was named Elizabeth Edwards. In some ways, these women were similar. True, one was older than the other, but both of them died far sooner than they should have, one at age 53, the other at age 61. Both engaged in activism about breast cancer. Both were ambitious, driven women. Both died in the presence of their friends and family. Both died within hours of each other. Both demonstrated the implacable killer that breast cancer can be. There the similarities end. One of these women (Kim Tinkham), for example, died…

What lies in our diets – Part 2

Sometimes I would inform over-familiar, gullible (and especially superstitious) people that all my best friends have died from cancer and the one major thing they had in common was that they were close to me. So, you know, there is a risk of death in befriending me. That is usually enough to stop the friendly chit-chat.

What lies in our diets – Part 2
Meat is considered an acidic food and a big no-no for those on the alkaline diet. Lemons are acidic in nature, but are said to be alkaline-forming in the gut – but this is just another bit of sciency news not proven by science. Filepic

Read Part 1

Analytical people would retort that the dead friends surely also had other things in common, such as being married, car drivers, beer drinkers, and of course, they all spoke English, et cetera. The point is that it is very easy for gullible people to quickly associate a correlation with a cause, whereas in reality no such link exists.
And simple correlations and a heavy dose of pseudoscience are basically the foundations of the Alkaline Diet invented by “Doctor” Robert Oldham Young, the best-selling author of a series of books based on something called the “pH Miracle” – over 4 million books have been sold, making him a multi-millionaire.
You will be reading some bizarre stuff about this gentleman in this article so it might help to note that Robert Young isn’t a real doctor of any kind – his doctorates are from non-accredited sources or purchased from a diploma mill, though that didn’t stop him describing himself as a “distinguished” microbiologist and biochemist.
Simple falsehoods
The elemental premise of the Alkaline Diet is that acidosis (excessive acidity in the blood) is the cause of all diseases and nothing bad can ever happen to a body if the body (blood) pH is in an alkaline state.
In light of the range of diseases known to medicine, this is clearly fantastic and untrue. Also, the human body maintains itself in a mildly alkaline state anyway (pH between 7.35 to 7.45) – simply because this is the optimal environment for enzymes to work.
Hence, although Young is correct in that all normal, healthy bodies are indeed alkaline, he fails to mention that sick bodies are also alkaline as that is always the natural blood/tissue configuration to avoid a potentially dangerous condition known as homeostatic imbalance.
Young then proposes that to maintain the body’s alkalinity, it is necessary to eat alkaline foods – even though some of the foods listed by him are actually acidic so the advice is somewhat inconsistent.
Note this requirement to eat alkaline foods is pointless – that is because the body will always maintain blood within the normal alkaline range regardless of what is eaten (all ingested food is always rendered acidic initially by the digestive juices).
Anyway, according to Young, the reason for maintaining an alkaline state is because if the body got too acidic, something called pleomorphism would happen in the human body.
A little description of pleomorphism is now in order. The concept was originally devised by a French doctor, Pierre Jacques Antoine Béchamp, in the 19th century. Lacking modern day equipment and observational tools, he came up with the idea that “very small” enzymes called microzymas are the basic elements of life in cells – and these microzymas produce proper enzymes and cells when “evolving” in favourable conditions in a host body.
However, if the host environment becomes hostile or unfavourable, then these same microzymas will instead decompose its host tissue and cells into pathogenic bacteria – this change from normal body cells into bacteria is his example of pleomorphism.
Béchamp’s concept therefore does not allow for external bacteria to be the cause for any disease as “pleomorphic bacteria” were supposed to be created by an “unbalanced” body itself.
This idea was somewhat popular at the time and set him seriously at odds with Louis Pasteur who determined external invasive germs are the causes of diseases when they infect the body.
Ultimately, the existence and efficacy of antibiotics proved that Pasteur was indeed correct and very few people now follow Béchamp’s discredited notions.
To be clear, some unusual bacteria can exhibit a limited form of pleomorphism in response to environmental factors. For example, the bacterium deinococcus radiodurans can change size depending on the amount of nutrients available – and helicobacter pylori can exist in both a helix-shaped form and a circular form. But regardless of their shapes, they always remain members of their own bacterial sub-species – they cannot change and become a different species due to pleomorphism.
Young’s concept of pleomorphism, however, is that human red blood cells can somehow turn themselves into pathogenic bacteria if the body is too acidic – and transform back from bacteria into red blood cells when conditions are alkaline.
Despite Young’s claims that he can demonstrate these forms of pleomorphism, the transformations have never been independently observed.
And pleomorphism does not explain the range of bacteria observed to be causing diseases in humans, unless you are prepared to accept that human blood/tissue cells can transform back and forth into the various species of germs that cause cholera, typhoid, tuberculosis, meningitis, gonorrhoea, et cetera. In short, this is absurd pseudoscience of the woo-woo category.
It gets weirder – Young also says that viruses are “molecular liquids or gases (venom) that can be created by chemical imbalances in humans”, even though all known evidence (including electron microscopy) has shown that viruses are externally-derived infectious pieces of genetic material covered by a protein coat (called a capsid), which is sometimes further surrounded by a casing of lipids. This is not unlike saying that someone can catch AIDS or develop avian flu spontaneously without any contact with humans or birds.
But what gets Young into the OMG category are his notions that “cancer is not a cell but a poisonous acidic liquid”, a “cancer is a systemic acidic condition that settles at the weakest parts of the body – not a localised problem that metastases” and a cancer “tumour is not the problem but the solution to protect healthy cells and tissues from being spoiled by other rotting cells and tissues”.
In summary, Young claims that there is no need to excise malignant tumours even if they are about to undergo metastasis as counterbalancing the “acidic liquid” is enough to cure cancer.
‘Curing’ cancer
And this was exactly what Young did to a young Briton, Naima Houder-Mohammed, who believed his ideas would cure her of breast cancer. She went to Young’s pH Miracle Ranch in California in 2012 and paid him US$550 (RM2500) per intravenous infusion of diluted sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), among other costs – she underwent 33 such infusions over 31 days. Needless to say, the painful treatments had no effect on her cancer.
In the end, Young had extracted US$77,000 (RM343,000) from Naima before she became so disillusioned and ill that she eventually returned home to die. Not unexpectedly, there are no verifiable accounts of any terminally-ill cancer patients surviving longer than their prognosis after receiving Young’s treatments.
In 2016, Young was finally convicted on charges of practising medicine without a licence and now faces jail time. Records of other cancer patients paying him huge sums of money were also found during the legal investigation.
Why?
Knowing what we know now about Young’s indefensible behaviour and ideas, a valid question may be: why was Young’s Alkaline Diet so successful in persuading millions of people to eat “alkaline” food?
One answer is that he had a good, fancy story to tell, even if it was scientifically meaningless. Many people fell for it because like all pseudoscience, the Alkaline Diet offered a seemingly wondrous, easy remedy to endemic problems such as bad dietary habits, bad health and fear of disease.
It would also appear that many people on the Alkaline Diet must be somewhat susceptible, especially if they really think that acidic fruits such as lemons and limes fit into the “Most Alkaline” group of foods as recommended by Young.
The Alkaline Diet also formed the basis of the rather irritating Clean Eating movement which is now morphing into the Wellness movement – but in reality, these are all fads, just like the Atkins Diet, South Beach Diet, Paleo Diet, et cetera.
Regardless of how it is branded, all the bloggers, writers, publishers and other players involved are only repackaging and re-selling mostly common-sense dietary advice – some of the recipes may be helpful but the basic information is usually advice which is available for free from various government health websites. Beware also that a degree of pseudoscience would often be injected into the marketing mix, along with lots of new buzzwords, glowing self-congratulatory testimonials and pretty pictures of healthy people.
Your own diet fad?
If you want to break away from the endless cycle of diet fads, the suggestions are pretty simple. Research a few good government health websites from around the world and make a list of the healthy ingredients (with the recommended daily amounts) that interest you – these are the stuffs you would like to eat.
From the ingredients, search food cooking websites for recipes – these are the dishes you want to make.
If you can, adapt existing recipes or create new cooking ideas yourself – it’s fun, it’s creative and it’s easy.
And why not create a funny title for your diet? Examples might be: The Human Bean Diet, One Direction Diet, Take That Diet, or Stairway To Heaven Diet. It is a way to maintain interest in your own diet – which you should expand with new ideas and recipes over time.
Oh, and estimate as best as you can the calorific values of each dish (after allowing for the Thermic Effect of Food) so you have an idea about how much you have eaten – do not exceed the number of daily calories needed to maintain health, at least not so often that the diet becomes meaningless.
From the past record of global diet fads, if you have done some good research and figured out some tasty recipes, your own fad diet is likely to be just as plausible and effective as any other. That is because you would have done exactly what fad creators do, apart from introducing the marketing and pseudoscience (which I hope you never will).
As for me, it seems that colleagues often think I lack passion and intensity – but that’s probably because they haven’t seen me alone with a succulent rare steak. That is definitely on my list of healthy foods even if it is deemed “acidic” by a fake doctor.

Acidity In Your Body Is Your Biggest Health Threat

| May 03, 2012 | Comments 16

The latest book I read is more than exciting. The problem is that I have had this book a few years. I stay so far behind in my reading and cover so much material and books that I forget where I am on the playing field of life.

Occasionally, I browse my books to trigger old excitement. I have thousands, and I treasure them. I would have to live 1,000 years to read them all!

I found that I have two copies of The pH Miracle by Robert O. Young, Ph.D., and his wife Shelley Redford Young (available here). And, yes, I had already read it and had heavily highlighted it all the way through. But ideas and information don’t catch on until we are ready. No matter the value, it means nothing until we are ready to mentally focus on a subject.

I found new excitement in The pH Miracle and I want to share with those who are ready for it.

Health Mysteries

You know, we could bypass a lot of misinformation in the mystery of health if we could go back to the fork in the road that split off between Antoine Béchamp (1816-1908) and Louis Pasteur (1822-1895).

Pasteur created fertile ground for the hoax of modern medicine that we have today. Charlatans and sociopaths saw the vast empire of wealth that could be created on the theories of Pasteur. Hence, we have the multitrillion-dollar synthetic chemical pharmaceutical colossus that has medically imprisoned the whole planet. We are sicker than ever and everybody knows this, but ignorance keeps us sick and keeps making trillions of dollars for the pharmaceutical conspiracy.

Another thing, the government and the political order is in bed with Big Pharma. You don’t hear politicians exposing this madness that is crushing the American people economically and killing millions of people yearly. Talk about murder incorporated and population control all in the same bucket! And guess who pays the bill?

Origins Of Disease

Obamacare says it all. How much more can these psychopaths put on the backs of the people? As the Nation collapses, the American people are stabbed in the heart yet again. OK, for you readers who are alert, here it is: Pasteur said that disease comes at us from the outside of the body; you know, the germ theory of disease. This is a world-class, multitrillion-dollar hoax that has literally captured the mind of the population. Everybody knows that we “catch a cold” and catch disease, so it’s the environment external to the body. Well, what about all the people who don’t “catch a cold?”

Antoine Béchamp, whom nobody knows, taught correctly that the milieu or internal environment governs life and health and sickness and death. Simply, if we are healthy inside, we are healthy outside; and no amount of “germs” affect us at all.

I quote now from The pH Miracle page 24:

Germ, Symptoms or Disease? Unfortunately, Pasteur was confusing disease with its symptoms, and that central misconception has come down through the generations as scientific law. In reality, disease is a general, underlying condition, not the symptoms we diagnose. If germs are involved, they are themselves just symptoms of that underlying condition. Remember that germs come from within our cells and that germs invading from outside the body can only contribute to a state of imbalance and stimulate secondary symptoms. What most people call disease is really just a collection of these secondary symptoms. Germs are really just the expression of the underlying disease condition (overacidity and microform overgrowth).

Common Problems of Overacidity: Your body faces all kinds of breakdown if it is allowed to get too acidic or is forced to fight too hard for too long just to stay basic (alkaline), or if it gets overgrown with noxious microforms. As I said before (and will no doubt say again): If you dig deep enough, these twin problems underlie just about anything that ails you. Here I want to look at some of the most common symptoms that result:

Weight: You can thank an overly acid internal environment for the excess pounds you are carrying around. In a defensive maneuver, the body creates fat cells to carry acids away from your vital organs to try to protect them. In one sense, your fat is saving your life! But that’s why your body doesn’t want to let it go. When you eat to make your body more basic (alkaline), your body won’t need to keep that fat around anymore.

Weight problems can also result from yeast and fungus interfering with the digestion of food. The nutritional deficiencies created can actually trigger your body to pack on extra pounds, in part because you are always hungry. More commonly, blood poisoned by mycotoxins goes to the liver to be detoxified—and that added stress distracts the liver from efficiently metabolizing fat and sugar.

The chaos in an imbalanced body will exhaust the adrenal glands, and the resulting low levels of energy contribute to weight gain. Another likely villain is fatigue of the thyroid gland, which controls the rate of metabolism. Cravings for sugar, outsized appetites, and low blood sugar levels all follow an overgrowth of harmful yeast, fungus, and molds in the body.

Taken together these patterns all make it easier to gain fat and harder to lose it. To top it off, poor digestion and possibly depression will develop or worsen, too. Those are only a couple of the wide variety of ways the chaos of imbalance can express itself. It is only when we change the way we eat to address the symptoms plaguing us that we finally drop excess pounds—without even trying.
Acid Kills

A translation of what you just read: Aging and death of the human body is the progressive (advancing) saturation of the body with acid. So, is this acidification of the population the great big secret of the pharmaceutical cartel? Are they jealously guarding this secret?

Remember that nobody — i.e., Big Pharma, the government bureaucrats, any politician — will identify the issues. There is no money in telling the truth, except for millions of people who collectively pay with their lives and their fortunes for the cloud of deceit and lies that bombard them day and night.

There is no external threat to human and personal liberty in America. It is all internal, like the diseases of the body. So when we look down Main Street, America, and see a vastly overweight and sick people, we actually see a population of dumbed-down people whose junk- and processed- food diet has them (their cells) internally highly acidified.

What an airtight conspiracy for the elite and their psychopathic stooges! They feed the people acid and make them pay for it with sickness and early death.

The American diet is acid. We don’t need “healthcare” and drugs. We need diet education and diet reversal from acid to alkaline.

Alkalize or die! May God have mercy on us!

Four powerful ways help reverse diabetes

NaturalNews) There are many benefits to finding ways to reverse diabetes. A big one is its expense. According to the American Diabetes Association, the combined cost of medical care and lost productivity due to diabetes in the United States exceeded $174 billion in 2007. People with diabetes pay 2.3 times as much for health care as non-diabetics, and $1 in every $10 spent for health care is attributable to diabetes. Once diabetes was largely considered a disease of adults, but today so many children receive this diagnosis it is no longer referred to as adult onset. Fortunately, given the pervasiveness and expense of diabetes, there are cost effective holistic remedies, which could make an important contribution towards its reversal, thus avoiding a great deal of pain and suffering and saving a lot of money.

Conventional approaches to treating diabetes include diet and medication to control insulin and blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, medication comes with side effects such as blindness, loss of limbs, heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease - all of which are costly in their own right. An alternative is a holistic approach such as that of Robert O. Young, PhD, known for his work establishing the importance of a healthy pH balance for diabetes treatment.

In his approach to diabetes Dr. Young suggests it is not so much a disease of the cells as it is a condition created by the environment of the cells. His conclusions are based on a study of participants in his program, designed to improve pH balance through emphasis on alkalizing foods, exercise and use of supplements beneficial for diabetes. Alkalizing foods include most vegetables, certain fruits such as lemons, grapefruits, tomatoes and avocados, some nuts, especially almonds, and green tea. Acid foods, on the other hand include sugar, alcohol, coffee and wheat flour products as well as most protein sources such as meat and dairy. Everyone, who stayed with Dr. Young's program for a full three months, either enjoyed a significant reduction in their need for insulin or were able to discontinue it all together. Many also lost weight and had lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

The importance of diet in diabetes was also supported by a study reported in the August, 2011 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. There researchers examined longitudinal data and concluded that reducing intake of red meat can have a significant impact on diabetes. Although they were not concerned with acid/alkaline balance, the fact that red meat is relatively acid may help in part to explain their results.

Other holistic solutions for diabetes include adaptogenic herbs such as Tulsi or holy basil. Tulsi, which is highly valued in India, is used by Ayurvedic practitioners for many conditions including diabetes. Its use has been validated by studies; in one 40 individuals with non-insulin dependent diabetes took 2.5 grams of dried tulsi powder every morning. The result was significantly lower blood sugar both first thing in the morning and after meals. Tulsi also helped lower cholesterol levels.

Cinnamon is yet another herb which has many applications and is effective for diabetes. A recent study in Pakistan followed 30 individuals who took cinnamon for 40 days. At the end of this time tests showed significant reductions in blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol.
