Eat your daily meals within 10 hours for better health

New research suggests it’s about time to consider that possibility.
In an early effort to explore the benefits of daily fasting in humans, researchers have found that people who are at high risk of developing diabetes improved their health in myriad ways when they ate all of their meals over a span of just over 10 hours, then fasted for the remainder of their 24-hour day.
The regimen, called time-restricted eating, is a variant of intermittent fasting – a practice growing in popularity.
To lose weight or improve health, those fasting intermittently don’t eat – or follow a spartan diet that mimics fasting – for a day or more every week or month.
Time-restricted eating by contrast, limits a person to consuming all of his or her daily calories in a relatively narrow window – say from 8am to 6pm.
Practised daily, time-restricted eating widens the period during which the body’s major visceral organs are put into a state of rest and recovery.
The experiment
Ample research has shown that erratic eating patterns, shiftwork, and modern-day habits like get-up-and-go breakfasts and midnight snacks, have contributed to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Satchidananda Panda, a biologist at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California in the United States, said that by establishing a consistent daily cycle of feeding and fasting, one might realign the ebb and flow of fuel intake with the body’s natural circadian rhythms.
“Every cell, every organ has its clock, and every organ needs downtime to repair, reset and regain its rhythm,” he said.
“When all your organs have rested and rejuvenated every day, they just work well.
“It’s almost like an orchestra: when all the musical instruments are in tune and work well together, it’s a melody, not a cacophony of sounds,” he added.
For the new research, Panda and his colleagues measured what happened when 19 people were asked to do all their eating during a 10-hour window every day for 12 weeks.
The participants were allowed to choose their own 10-hour window and could vary it slightly, say if they had an early breakfast meeting one day or a late dinner on another.
All the study’s subjects had a condition known as metabolic syndrome.
Sometimes called pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome makes a person five times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and it doubles her risk of developing cardiovascular (heart) disease within five years.
The condition is diagnosed when a patient tests positive for three or more of the following conditions: obesity, high blood pressure (hypertension), problematic cholesterol, impaired metabolic function and excessive waist circumference (an indicator of abdominal fat).
Three in 10 Americans are thought to have metabolic syndrome.
To ward it off, doctors have little to offer beyond exercising more, eating less and losing weight.
But patients often ignore or abandon that medical advice and go on to develop full-blown type 2 diabetes.
In the pilot study, the participants limited their “eating day” to under 11 hours for 12 weeks.
They reduced their calorie intake by almost 9%, lost an average of 3% of their body weight and reported more restful sleep – all improvements that could aid in disrupting a patient’s progression from metabolic syndrome to diabetes.
As a group, participants reduced their belly fat – a bellwether of future heart disease risk – by 3%.

The group’s blood pressure, typically high in those with pre-diabetes, fell. Their cholesterol readings, typically worrisome in this population, improved.
And in the 12 participants whose metabolic function had already veered into abnormal territory, three months of time-restricted eating appeared to bring about improvements in two key health measures: fasting glucose and HbA1c.
These changes came about without any increase in participants’ physical activity. And improvements didn’t rise or fall with changes in weight.
Time-restricted eating did induce weight loss, which typically improves many bodily functions.
But it appeared to effect key changes in direct ways, rather than just by helping subjects slim down.
In several cases, participants were able to discontinue or take smaller doses of medications, such as cholesterol-lowering statins or hypertension drugs.
In other instances, researchers saw that shortening their eating day and observing a long nightly fast helped patients who were not sufficiently helped by medication alone to achieve normal readings.
The results were published recently in the journal Cell Metabolism.
None of these promising findings is definitive: With only 19 participants and no control group, the work merely lays the foundation for further investigation.
But a much larger clinical trial that meets the gold standard of biomedical research is already in the works.
Underwritten by the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, that trial will also explore the benefits of daily fasting in people with metabolic syndrome.
Willing to do it

All 19 subjects – three women and 16 men – were able to maintain a regular habit of fasting between 13 and 14 hours a day for about six days a week, on average.
The timing of their meals became more regular. And they didn’t skip breakfast – a shortcut that research suggests could have negative health effects.
They were not instructed or urged to continue this pattern of eating after the study was done.
But when researchers followed up with the participants about 15 months after the intervention had ended, they discovered that five continued to follow the eating schedules they had adopted in the study.
Seven others said they were either limiting their eating window a little less stringently or following their time-restricted eating schedule on a part-time basis.
The remaining seven said they had followed the regimen for an average of just over four months before it fell by the wayside.
Dieting fails most severely due to lack of patient adherence.
But daily fasting may make it easier for people at increased risk for diabetes and heart disease to succeed, experts said.
“These are patients at the tipping point for diabetes,” said Dr Pam R. Taub, a University of California, San Diego, cardiologist and co-author of the new research.
“This is a very critical window where you can reverse the disease process.”
But she said, “the same old spiel – get more exercise, reduce your calories, try a plant-based diet”, has proven frustrating for both her and her patients.
“Most people just don’t sustain it, and year after year, things are getting worse for them,” said Dr Taub, whose patients were among the participants.
“So what was really exciting was that here was a lifestyle strategy where all I asked them to do was change the time of their eating.”
They did, and their health improved.
Valter Longo, who studies the effects of intermittent fasting at the University of Southern California, said the new study “should be treated as a promising pilot”, rather than a blueprint for patients and doctors.
Future studies should not only explore the health benefits of time-restricted eating, but also the risks for people who prolong their fasts in a bid to gain more benefits.
Those risks include dehydration and heart arrhythmia (irregular heart beat), as well as an increased likelihood of gallstones.
Trials should also probe the potential impact of more relaxed eating-and-fasting routines, including 12 hours on and 12 hours off.
“Dose effects,” he said, could prove to be important.

Here’s how to eat right to prevent cancer

One-third of all cancer deaths are preventable and can be attributed to lifestyle choices that we all make every day. Poor diet, lack of physical activity, and consuming alcohol and tobacco are all associated with an increased risk of cancer.

Simply changing what and how much we eat can significantly reduce the risk. It is also important to note that a healthy, balanced diet should come from natural and whole foods, not from vitamin supplements.
Being overweight or obese has been linked to cancers of almost all the organs in the body, including kidney, pancreas, liver and breast. Given the lethality of some of these cancers, we have to be mindful of our weight and control our caloric intake.
Indeed, the most important factor in the relationship between diet and prevention of cancer is healthy weight maintenance throughout life. Weight maintenance can be achieved by balancing caloric intake from food and beverages, with physical activity.

Reduce Intake

Research suggests that too much dietary fat, especially unhealthy fats like saturated and trans fat, may lead to an increased risk for a variety of cancers such as colon, rectum and prostate cancer.
The fat content in meat may contribute to the production of secondary compounds in the body that act as carcinogens. Major sources include cheese, pizza, desserts and red meat.
Perhaps we can replace that “cheese leleh burger” with foods containing healthy fats, i.e. essential omega-3 fatty acids found in seafood and most plant-based oils.
Meanwhile, a high intake of processed meat and red meats (beef or pork) may be associated with an increase in stomach and colorectal cancers. Evidence suggests that risk for colon and rectal cancer may increase by 15%-20% for every 100g of red meat or 50g of processed meat per day.
Red meat contains compounds such as iron that may cause the formation of free radicals. Processed meats contain nitrates, which have been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and are suspected of causing cancer in humans.
Consumption of processed meat also increases one’s exposure to carcinogenic chemicals from methods of preservation that involve smoke or salt.
There are still no robust studies that have conclusively shown that you should eliminate them entirely from your diet, but for those who are already predisposed to cancer (e.g. having family members with cancer), it is smart to limit your consumption of these two foods.
Carcinogens are also present in certain foods and evidence suggests that eating salt-cured, smoked, pickled or charcoal-broiled foods can increase the risk for cancer. Rates of stomach and oesophageal cancer cases are especially high in parts of the world where food is often prepared using these methods.
We should also be mindful of how we cook. A substance called benzopyrene is formed when fat from meat drips on to hot coals during broiling. The rising smoke then deposits this carcinogenic substance on the meat.
High-temperature frying may convert some of the meat proteins into products that damage our cells, which can lead to tumours and cancers.

Increase Intake

Specific nutrients and food constituents of fruits, vegetables and whole grains may act as anti-cancer substances when consumed in the proper amounts found in a varied diet.
Consuming fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may also help in healthy weight maintenance – the ultimate goal in cancer prevention, according to research.
Wholegrain plants such as wheat, oats, rice and barley contain vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre, which may help prevent cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, such as colon and rectal cancer.
Dietary fibre is the material from plant cells that the body cannot digest completely and it is found in vegetables, legumes, fruit, whole grain cereals, nuts and seeds.
Fibre provides bulk in the diet and it helps move food through the intestines and out of the body at regular intervals. However, fibre supplements are not recommended.
Plants contain many beneficial compounds such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phyto-chemicals and fibre, which may act to reduce the risk for cancers such as lung, mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, stomach and colo-rectal.
There are several groups of fruits and vegetables that may offer particularly protective effects, such as dark green and orange vegetables, cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli), flavonoids (soy, tea), legumes, sulphides (garlic, onion) and tomato products.
Antioxidants are compounds present in fruits and vegetables that help protect tissues from being damaged. Tissue damage is linked to increased cancer risk; therefore antioxidants may play a role in cancer prevention.
Types of antioxidants include vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E, and the carotenoids – vitamin A and beta-carotene. Their protective effect is only observed when one consumes antioxidants from plant foods such as fruits and vegetables, and not from supplements.
Phytochemicals (or phytonutrients) include dark green and orange vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, flavonoids and sulphides, and show a decrease in risk for cancer, but the relationship is unknown.

Take In Moderation

Heavy consumption of alcoholic beverages (more than two drinks per day for men and more than one drink per day for women) increases the risk of mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, liver, pancreas, bladder, colorectal and breast cancers.
The link between cancer and alcohol is complex because frequent alcohol consumption may result in many health problems. The carcinogenic effect may result from the direct contact of alcohol on the mouth, pharynx and oesophagus.
Heavy drinking can result in liver cirrhosis, which may lead to liver cancer. Alcoholics commonly have nutritional deficiencies because alcohol contains only empty calories, and food intake is often compromised. If heavy drinkers also smoke cigarettes, the risk for cancer is compounded.
Alcohol is high in calories and low in nutrients. Calories from alcohol can contribute to weight gain, again a risk factor for cancer. The risk factors for cancer act cumulatively to contribute to the occurrence of cancer; they are not necessarily the cause of cancer.
Lifestyle risk factors for cancer are usually preventable and avoiding certain factors may lower one’s risk in developing cancer. Avoid excess weight gain by limiting high caloric foods and beverages, decreasing food portions, limiting high calorie snacks and engaging in regular physical activity.

The study was led by the University of Exeter -- simultaneously published today in JAMA and presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference 2019 in Los Angeles. The research found that the risk of dementia was 32 per cent lower in people with a high genetic risk if they had followed a healthy lifestyle, compared to those who had an unhealthy lifestyle.
Participants with high genetic risk and an unfavourable lifestyle were almost three times more likely to develop dementia compared to those with a low genetic risk and favourable lifestyle.
Joint lead author Dr El?bieta Ku?ma, at the University of Exeter Medical School, said: "This is the first study to analyse the extent to which you may offset your genetic risk of dementia by living a healthy lifestyle. Our findings are exciting as they show that we can take action to try to offset our genetic risk for dementia. Sticking to a healthy lifestyle was associated with a reduced risk of dementia, regardless of the genetic risk."
The study analysed data from 196,383 adults of European ancestry aged 60 and older from UK Biobank. The researchers identified 1,769 cases of dementia over a follow-up period of eight years. The team grouped the participants into those with high, intermediate and low genetic risk for dementia.
To assess genetic risk, the researchers looked at previously published data and identified all known genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's disease. Each genetic risk factor was weighted according to the strength of its association with Alzheimer's disease.
To assess lifestyle, researchers grouped participants into favourable, intermediate and unfavourable categories based on their self-reported diet, physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption. The researchers considered no current smoking, regular physical activity, healthy diet and moderate alcohol consumption as healthy behaviours. The team found that living a healthy lifestyle was associated with a reduced dementia risk across all genetic risk groups.
Joint lead author Dr David Llewellyn, from the University of Exeter Medical School and the Alan Turing Institute, said: "This research delivers a really important message that undermines a fatalistic view of dementia. Some people believe it's inevitable they'll develop dementia because of their genetics. However it appears that you may be able to substantially reduce your dementia risk by living a healthy lifestyle."
The study was led by the University of Exeter in collaboration with researchers from the University of Michigan, the University of Oxford, and the University of South Australia.

A change of diet cured my cancer

It's a miserable business, having cancer. I can remember those years clearly, and they were dreadful.


I had no family history of cancer, but I knew what it was when I found the lump in my breast in 1987. I tried to convince myself it wasn't real, but when I was diagnosed with cancer, I wasn't that surprised. It was a real strain on my family.

I was 42 and my sons, Mark and Tom, were 16 and six then, but it was hardest for my daughter, Emma, who was 13 - all her teenage years were blighted by my cancer.

And then one day, it all made sense - and what I discovered that day was to change my life for ever. It was six years after I was first diagnosed, and my family and I had been to hell and back. I'd had so many gruelling operations - a mastectomy, 12 sessions of chemotherapy and 35 radiotherapy treatments, and despite everything, I was still left with a lump the size of half a boiled egg sticking out of my neck.

It was a secondary cancer, since the disease had reached my lymph system, and I was absolutely fed up. I'd just had a session of chemotherapy which had had no effect on this latest large lump - I was measuring it with callipers, so I knew.

It's hard to explain to a non-scientist the mental and emotional buzz you get when you know that you have just had an important insight. It's as if you have had a lot of jigsaw pieces in your mind and suddenly the whole picture becomes clear.

My husband Peter is also a scientist - he's a mineralogist and gemologist - and he had recently come back from a trip to China. We were musing on why so few Chinese women get breast cancer - their incidence of the disease is one in 100,000 - and what was different about their way of life, and it suddenly struck me that they just didn't have any dairy productsin their diet.

I eliminated all dairy produce from my diet immediately - I had been eating organic yoghurt to help my digestive tract recover from the chemotherapy, but I also threw out anything containing milk products, from biscuits to soups and even some forms of margarine. Within days, the lump began to itch, then to soften and shrink, until, after six weeks, it had vanished altogether.

What I believe I've done is to go back and establish the root cause of breast and prostate cancer. That's what I've been trained to do throughout my career as a scientist - to find the fundamental cause. Conventional therapy deals with the symptoms of cancer - the tumours - but my regime goes further.

I don't believe dairy produce initiates cancer, rather that it promotes it - if the body weren't constantly taking in growth factors from milk, it would be able to clean up its damaged cells by itself.

When my tumour disappeared, I couldn't just pronounce that the one thing had led to the other. I have been trained throughout my working life to give data for the statements I am making or to give sources, so I began researching the whole subject.

Friends who had been wonderfully supportive during the years I been struggling with breast cancer would send me clippings from papers and magazines, which often produced new lines of enquiry, and gradually I formed my views about diet and its relation to cancer.

It is not an extreme regime - if people want to follow diets that are extremely unconventional, that's fine, but it's not what I'd recommend. Barry Sheene did so and, in the end, the regime failed and he died. I would never recommend that people avoid conventional treatment.

Cancer is such a clever disease that you have to use everything at your disposal to tackle it. I recommend that people use my diet and lifestyle factors to help them through procedures such as chemotherapy, and to give them some awareness of the factors that you can control in your diet and lifestyle.

The fact is that dairy milk contains a number of substances called growth factors; breast and prostate tissue both have receptors for growth factors, which cause cells to divide and reproduce. It seems that if you have a damaged cell, these growth factors will select these damaged cells, and cause them to grow out of all control.


I now believe that the link between dairy produce and breast cancer is similar to the link between smoking and lung cancer. It was difficult to accept that a substance as "natural" as milk might have such ominous health implications, but I am living proof that it worked.

Cutting out dairy produce is one of the main dietary points, but there are other very important ones. You should eat masses of vegetables and fruit (with more emphasis on vegetables) - not only are they full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, but many contain chemicals which have anticancer properties, such as allicin in garlic, or lycopene in tomatoes.

You should limit your intake of saturated fats, and eat a diet rich in monounsaturates (such as olive oil), and omega 3 and 6 oils (oily fish, flax seeds and nuts).

Eating adequate amounts of protein is important for your body - though I suggest that as much as possible should be from vegetable sources (eg, lentils); salt and sugar should be kept to a minimum, in favour of seasonings which have anti-cancer action, such as the curcumin in turmeric.

Wholegrain cereals are good for the body, because they contain detoxing enzymes and substances which help suppress the growth of tumours, and it is vital to drink lots - I prefer filtered boiled water to what comes out of the tap, though I don't recommend bottled water - I don't like anything in plastic bottles, because of the harmful plasticising chemicals that can migrate into the water.

I have followed this regime for the past 10 years, and have remained free from cancer. My specialist at Charing Cross Hospital was sceptical about my ideas at first, but now I have heard that he uses maps showing cancer mortality in China when he is lecturing, and recommends a non-dairy diet to his cancer patients.

When I go to hospital for checkups, if he is not around, other doctors who read my notes often can't believe that I had cancer as extensively and seriously as I did, given that I now look so healthy.

I'm so relieved I made my discovery, because it has given me 10 years with my family - and, I hope, many more - which the doctors thought I'd never have. And my message is for everyone who has had a diagnosis of breast cancer - don't be afraid. I got better - and so can you.

Following four out of five golden rules for healthy living lowers the risk of developing dementia by more than a third, a study has found.
Analysis by Age UK suggested that lifestyle was responsible for 76% of changes in the brain and that people could go some way to avoiding the disease by adopting or quitting certain habits.
Taking regular physical exercise, eating a Mediterranean diet, not smoking, and drinking alcohol in moderation were all found to decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
In addition, preventing and treating diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity was also found to reduce the risk.
But while heavy drinking was linked to dementia, drinking moderate levels of alcohol was found to be beneficial.
A review of academic studies and data by researchers at the University of Edinburgh revealed that more than three quarters of cognitive decline – age-related changes in brain skills including memory and speed of thinking - was accounted for by lifestyle and other environmental factors including level of education.
One large UK study carried out over 30 years found that men aged between 45 and 59 who followed four to five of the identified lifestyle factors were found to have a 36% lower risk of developing cognitive decline and a 36% lower risk of developing dementia than those who did not.
Age UK’s evidence review also revealed that physical exercise, whether aerobic, resistance or balance activity, was the most effective way to ward off cognitive decline in healthy older people and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
Studies suggest that exercise three to five times a week for between 30 minutes and an hour is beneficial.
A healthy diet, moderate alcohol intake and not smoking also play a role in healthy brain ageing generally, as well as reducing the risk of developing dementia, the evidence review suggested.
It found that there are significantly more new cases of Alzheimer’s among current smokers compared with those who have never smoked.
The review supported claims that very heavy drinking increases the risk of developing dementia as it results in the loss of brain tissue, particularly in the parts of the brain responsible for memory and processing and interpreting visual information.
Moderate levels of alcohol, however, were found to protect brain tissue by increasing good cholesterol and lowering bad cholesterol.
According to the latest estimates, there are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia and the disease will affect one in three people over the age of 65.
Age UK, which is funding the university’s Disconnected Mind project investigating how thinking skills alter with age and what influences those changes, said it hoped the new evidence would spur people on to make lifestyle choices that would reduce their risk of dementia.
Caroline Abrahams, charity director, said “While there’s still no cure or way to reverse dementia, this evidence shows that there are simple and effective ways to reduce our risk of developing it to begin with.
“What’s more, the changes that we need to make to keep our brains healthy are already proven to be good for the heart and overall health, so it’s common sense for us all to try to build them into our lives.
“The sooner we start, the better our chance of having a healthy later life.”
A YouGov poll of more than 2,000 people by the Alzheimer’s Society earlier this year found 22% of people did not think it was possible to reduce their risk of dementia, however.
Age and dementia charities hope to change this by increasing public awareness of the lifestyle factors behind the disease.
An Alzheimer's Society spokesman said: "What's good for your heart is good for your head. The best way of reducing your risk of developing dementia is regular excercise, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a Mediterranean diet and keeping your cholesterol in check."
Dr Matthew Norton, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, added: "It’s now recognised across public health authorities that lifestyle changes could contribute to reducing dementia risk. It’s now time for these messages to start reaching the public to help empower people protect their cognitive health as they grow older.
“It’s important to remember that diseases like Alzheimer’s are complex and are likely to be caused by a mixture of genetic and environmental factors, which are still not fully understood. While there are ways to reduce our risk of dementia, there is currently no sure-fire way to prevent the condition, which is why continued investment in research is vital."
