Research indicates that you don't need drugs to control blood sugar. Food, herbs, and spices are the future of medicine

Over 80 million Americans have insulin resistance that can lead to diabetes. And you could be on the road to diabetes for 10 years or more and never even know it. Here's what happens.

The hormone insulin directs your cells to open up and take in glucose from the blood. With insulin resistance, your cells become desensitized to insulin. They ignore the instructions to open up and take in glucose. Your body keeps producing more insulin to try to get the message heard. But it doesn't work. And your insulin levels rise higher and higher.

Those chronically high insulin levels cause rapid weight gain, premature aging, high blood pressure, heart disease, and higher cancer risks. Eventually they lead to type 2 diabetes.

Herbs, spices and foods are your first line of defense. Here are eight that can help restore and maintain your cells' sensitivity to insulin.

1. Turmeric: 100% Effective In Preventing Diabetes

A 2009 study found curcumin, an active compound found in turmeric, was 500 to 100,000 times more effective than the prescription drug Metformin at activating glucose uptake.[i]

In another study of 240 pre-diabetic adults, patients were given either 250 milligrams of curcumin or a placebo every day. After nine months, NONE of those taking curcumin developed diabetes but 16.4% of the placebo group did. In other words, the curcumin was 100% effective at preventing Type 2 diabetes.

2. Ginger: Lowers Fasting Blood Glucose by 10.5%

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial 88 diabetics were divided into two groups. Every day one group received a placebo while the other received 3 one-gram capsules of ginger powder. After eight weeks, the ginger group reduced their fasting blood sugar by 10.5%. But the placebo group INCREASED their fasting blood sugar by 21%. In addition, insulin sensitivity increased significantly more in the ginger group.[ii]

In another study, researchers proved that 1600 mg per day of ginger improves eight markers of diabetes including insulin sensitivity.[iii]

Many other studies prove the value of ginger for diabetes. For a complete list of studies visit Green Med Info's page on Ginger Health Benefits.

3. Cinnamon: Less Than Half a Teaspoon A Day Reduces Blood Sugar Levels

Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices and most popular spices. It's been used for millennia both for its flavoring and medicinal qualities.

Cinnamon has been shown to normalize blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics by improving the ability to respond to insulin. A meta-analysis of eight clinical studies shows that cinnamon or cinnamon extracts lower fasting blood glucose levels.[iv]

Cinnamon works in part by slowing the rate at which the stomach empties after eating. In one study subjects ate about a cup of rice pudding with and without about a teaspoon of cinnamon. Adding the cinnamon slowed the rate the stomach emptied from 37% to 34.5% and significantly slowed the rise in blood sugar levels. Even less than a half of a teaspoon a day reduces blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics.[v]

Here are 5 more reasons to eat cinnamon every day.

4. Olive Leaf Extract: Results Comparable to Metformin

University of Auckland researchers proved that olive leaf extract decreases insulin sensitivity.

In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, 46 overweight men were divided into two groups. One group received capsules containing olive leaf extract and the other group received a placebo. After 12 weeks, olive leaf extract lowered insulin resistance by an average of 15%. It also increased the productivity of the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas by 28%.[vi]

The researchers noted that supplementing with olive leaf extract gave results "comparable to common diabetic therapeutics (particularly metformin)."

5. Berries Lower After-Meal Insulin Spike

Studies show the body needs less insulin for sugar balance after a meal if berries are also eaten. In a study of healthy women in Finland, subjects were asked to eat white and rye bread with or without a selection of different pureed berries. Starch in the bread alone spikes after-meal glucose levels. But the researchers found that adding berries to the bread significantly reduced the after-meal insulin spike.

Strawberries, bilberries, lingonberries, and chokeberries were effective. So was a mixture consisting of strawberries, bilberries, cranberries, and blackberries.[vii]

6. Black Seed (Nigella Sativa): Just 2 Grams Reduces Insulin Resistance

In a study of 94 diabetic patients, researchers prescribed either 1, 2 or 3 grams a day of Nigella sativa capsules. They found that at the dose of 2 grams per day, black seed significantly reduced fasting blood glucose and insulin resistance. The higher dose of 3 grams per day did not result in additional benefits.[viii]

Black seed has been treasured for thousands of years for its healing properties. It is sometimes referred to as Roman coriander, black sesame, black cumin, and black caraway. It's been called the remedy for everything but death.

7. Spirulina Increases Insulin Sensitivity by 225%

In a randomized study of insulin-resistant patients, researchers compared the power of spirulina and soy to control insulin levels.[ix] They assigned 17 patients to receive 19 grams of spirulina a day. The other 16 patients received 19 grams of soy. After eight weeks the spirulina group on average increased their insulin sensitivity by 224.7% while the soy group increased their insulin sensitivity by 60%.

In addition, 100% of the spirulina group improved their insulin sensitivity while only 69% of the soy group improved.

8. Berberine Just As Good as Three Different Diabetes Drugs

Berberine is a bitter compound found in the roots of several plants including goldenseal, barberry, and Oregon grape. Studies prove it's just as good as prescription diabetes drugs.

Chinese researchers compared berberine to metformin in a pilot study of 36 patients. They found berberine lowered blood sugar levels just as well as metformin in just three months. The patients also significantly decreased their fasting blood glucose, and their after-meal blood glucose.

In the same study, researchers gave berberine to 48 diabetics for three months. After only one week, berberine lowered both fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels. In addition, their insulin resistance dropped 45%.[x]

Other researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 14 studies involving 1,068 participants. They found berberine performed just as well as metformin, glipizide and rosiglitazone. Those are three of the top diabetes drugs on the market.[xi] And berberine has no serious side effects.

When Your Doctor Is Ignorant, It’s Not Bliss

| May 01, 2013

when-your-doctors-is-ignorant-its-not-bliss_300Ignorance is bliss, the old saying goes. And, sure, it’s true that not realizing the severity of something can leave you temporarily feeling good. But ignorance of medical facts is no trivial matter. On a basic level, everyone needs to be able to assess their health and wellness and decide if they need help.

Knowing when a problem is too serious for supplements or over-the-counter medications and requires a visit to a healthcare professional is important. But when the doctor you consult is ignorant, there’s no bliss. Instead, there’s danger.

The Situation

I don’t usually indulge in rants, but I encountered an infuriating situation that gives me no choice.

Recently, I accompanied a friend to see one of the leading immunologists in our area. She needed to discuss results of blood work, her pain levels related to viral syndrome and other symptoms; and she wanted me there for support. While my friend was waiting to see the main doctor, the doctor doing her “fellowship” came in to begin the visit. All was fine until my friend mentioned that she started feeling better after taking olive leaf extract and curcumin (turmeric) supplements.

At this, the young doctor smirked ever so slightly (but still noticeably) and began spewing her allopathic medical “party line.” You know it all too well, I am sure. The one about how alternative medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and Indian therapies are nice things and all but not medically valid. Mostly, I hear these things from established physicians, usually over the age of 60. Those older physicians were trained in the medical field and gained their long years of experience during a time when many of the clinical trials on natural medicine had not yet been conducted. Today, thanks to some of that research, I don’t think that the medical profession scoffs so much at alternative medicine or treatments.

But on this visit, the medical fellow sitting before us was young. She’s coming up in a medical world where the model is shifting toward self-care, prevention and alternative therapies complementing and being used in lieu of certain medical practices and medications. She is not of the old guard. So her comments were just ignorant. Plain and simple, they were based in her having zero knowledge of the subject matter. And instead of trying to better herself, increase her knowledge and offer better responses to patients, she assumed with great arrogance that such things are useless.

The Exchange Between Doctor And Patient

Doctor: “How are your pain and symptoms?”

Friend: “Much better since I began taking olive leaf extract to boost my immunity and curcumin for the inflammation. It’s surprising how much they’ve helped.”

Doctor (smirking): “Well, I am not sure what to say. I mean, I have not read all of the papers; but really there are no studies that show that these supplements work. Actually, there are no studies that show if they work or don’t work. So we really have no way of knowing. But if you think they are helping you with something else, keep taking them. But really, our opinion is they do nothing for immunity. There simply is no scientific data for them.”

Her condescending words displayed her ignorance. I sat quietly, trying to fathom such an ignorant statement. It’s not that she “hasn’t read all the papers.” In fact, she has not read any of the papers. In fact, she doesn’t know they exist. And to dismiss everything in one fell swoop based on lack of knowledge and understanding is just plain ignorant. Worse, her comments totally undermined our trust in any of the medical information she shared that day. It left us wondering if she were just as ignorant of that.

The Scoop

When I got home, I decided to check PubMed.com to see just how many articles there were on olive leaf extract and curcumin as used for immunity and inflammation. And the result: a whopping tens of thousands of study results. Yes, there are thousands and thousands of scientifically carried out and vetted, placebo-controlled studies done by reputable universities like Harvard and published in prestigious journals the world over. Not just a few, mind you, but tens of thousands.

Searching Olive Leaf Extract

A search of the term “olive” showed 18,657 results of olives mentioned as part of clinical trials and studies. A search for “olive oil and cholesterol” displayed 831 scientific papers. “Olive leaf extract antiviral” uncovered five specific studies on its usefulness for HIV-1, rotovirus, influenza and VHSV virus.

Consider this search finding:

The olive leaf extract exhibits antiviral activity against viral haemorrhagic septicaemia rhabdovirus (VHSV). Antiviral Res. 2005 Jun;66(2-3):129-36. Epub 2005 Apr 18.

“A commercial plant extract derived from olive tree leaf (Olea europaea) (LExt) and its major compound, oleuropein (Ole), inhibited the in vitro infectivity of the viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV), a salmonid rhabdovirus…”

Searching Turmeric and Curcumin

When doing a PubMed search for turmeric, that gold-colored root that adds vibrancy to Indian food, I got 2,437 results. There were 236 scientific studies on turmeric for inflammation alone and another 72 for the use of turmeric to help manage diabetes. When a search was made for curcumin (the active part of turmeric), 5,590 results showed. These scientific studies included such things as curcumin’s application in arthritis, hepatitis, cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Here is an example of an interesting abstract:

Therapeutic roles of curcumin: lessons learned from clinical trials. AAPS J. 2013 Jan;15(1):195-218. doi: 10.1208/s12248-012-9432-8. Epub 2012 Nov 10.

“Extensive research over the past half century has shown that curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a component of the golden spice turmeric (Curcuma longa), can modulate multiple cell signaling pathways…”

And There’s Much More

Additional studies can be found in great numbers for omega-3 fatty acids (more than 17,000) and traditional Chinese medicine (25,826). The list goes on and on.

So I guess the doctor is right. (Now, I’m smirking.) There are no scientific studies showing whether supplements and herbs are helpful or harmful. There are tens of thousands. And if your healthcare provider tells you otherwise or gives you flack for trying to help yourself with natural means, then I suggest visiting a site like Pubmed.com and downloading a few of the abstracts to bring with you on your next visit. If I had thought to do so before my friend’s appointment, the conversation would have proceeded quite differently.

Help Your Liver Detox Your Body

Mar 18, 2013

help-your-liver-detox-your-body_300To a medical professional, the term “toxin” refers to an acute, life-threatening chemical like arsenic or strychnine. That’s why I used to mock people’s references to toxic molecules from food or from our environment. What modern medicine fails to recognize is that toxins can be anything that clearly wears down your health or contributes in a significant way to aging or illness. It is obvious that cigarette smoke, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and many other xenobiotic chemicals from our environment are significant toxins.

In this article I’ll give you some important details about supplements to protect and cleanse your liver.

First however, here’s a quick review of the antioxidants that help your liver thrive.

The Antioxidant Molecules Your Liver Knows Best

In the liver you find the highest concentration of the three key endogenous antioxidant molecules. These are ones you were born with and which are being constantly formed to protect you from the effects of free radical damage, also known as oxidative stress. These three molecules are:
  • Glutathione peroxidase (aka glutathione).
  • Superoxide dismutase (SOD).
  • Coenzyme Q10.
Glutathione: the most prevalent and thought to be the most effective antioxidant in the liver. It naturally recycles back to its reduced state so it can repeatedly act as an antioxidant. Low glutathione measurements directly correlate with disease states. As you get sicker and older, the measureable levels of glutathione in your blood drop.

Glutathione was first synthesized in 1935. By 1965, it was found that it does not improve liver health when taken by mouth as a supplement. You can benefit from glutathione given intravenously and also when you supplement with the amino acid components glutamine, cysteine and glycine, which are incorporated into glutathione. People who supplement with these glutathione precursors report significant improvement with energy, quality of sleep, mood and mental focus, as well as decreasing aches and pains.

You can get some glutathione from foods such as fish, fresh fruits, beans, almost all leafy green and solid green vegetables, colorful non-starchy vegetables, whey protein, eggs, plain yogurt, cottage cheese, raw nuts, and legumes.

Still, you must adopt healthy habits that encourage your body to make adequate levels of glutathione naturally. That is to say, people who are sick and have low glutathione levels and those who have accelerated aging have usually mistreated their bodies by eating heavy meats, refined sugars, fake fats and high-calorie, low-nutrient foods for many years.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD): an enzyme that breaks down superoxide free radicals to oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The two types of SOD are copper/zinc (Cu/Zn) SOD and manganese (Mn) SOD. Superoxide dismutase is found in foods such as barley grass, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, wheatgrass and almost all green vegetables. It is also available as a supplement. It is sold in topical forms to reduce facial wrinkles, scar tissue, wounds and burns. It is also used to reverse hyperpigmentation and protect against harmful UV rays.

Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone): a powerful antioxidant naturally synthesized in the liver and essential for the liver detoxification process. Coenzyme Q10 is found in each cell’s energy-producing organelles, called the mitochondria, and is required energy production in all cells. Tissues with higher ATP energy needs that, therefore, require more coenzyme Q10 include the heart muscle, eye retina, brain, liver and lungs. There is a natural, age-dependent decrease in coenzyme Q10 from its peak blood concentrations at about age 20. It drops by 65 percent by age 80. [1] Other factors leading to coQ10 deficiency include nutrient-poor food consumption, environmental stress and certain prescription medications (including statins).

Supplements To Assist Your Liver Detoxification

Silymarium (milk thistle): helps protect liver cell walls from damage by toxic substances and helps regenerate healthy new liver cells. Studies conducted by the AMC Cancer Research Center in Denver suggest that milk thistle helps protect the liver from compounds that trigger abnormal cell growth in the prostate and breast.

Selenium: supports proper function of P450 liver enzymes.

Soy lecithin (phosphatidylcholine): helps blast away the accumulated fat and cholesterol that can clog the liver (and lead to fatty liver). It repairs liver damage from alcohol, improves muscle function and boosts overall energy. A fatty liver produces no symptoms but can lead to liver damage that includes inflammation and scarring.

Artichoke leaf: one of the most powerful nutrients to help improve the secretion of bile, which eliminates toxic waste.

Turmeric: reduces liver inflammation while boosting bile production. It also helps regenerate liver cells and excrete toxins.

Burdock root: helps clear congestion in the urinary, lymphatic and circulatory system. These actions ease the load on your liver.

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC): helps reduce the effects of chemicals and toxins in the liver.

Alpha lipoic acid: one of the few free radical fighters that is both fat and water soluble. Why is that important? Toxins hide out in fat cells but they can’t hide from ALA. As a result, alpha lipoic acid is one of the most powerful nutrients to help restore the health of a liver damaged by drugs, alcohol or environmental toxins.

Trimethylglycine (TMG): helps protect against fatty deposits in the liver caused by alcohol, obesity and diabetes. In an impressive Italian study, patients taking TMG experienced better liver function and reduced fat in the liver. It also helped relieve their abdominal pain.

Dandelion root: has been shown in studies to double bile flow and help keep the liver enzymes in natural balance.

Olive leaf extract: contains oleuropein, a compound that destroys virus-infected cells while keeping healthy cells intact.

Remember also to consume the liver-supporting foods: onions, garlic, artichoke, beets, burdock and leafy green vegetables. Be careful with grapefruit. It is known to shut down the P450 liver enzymes needed for detoxification.

To your ongoing great health and feeling good,

Michael Cutler, M.D.

Olive Leaf Extract Prevents Osteoporosis ...

No article date

Did you know…

that a delicious fruit enjoyed in Mediterranean cuisine can fight infections, strengthen your immune system, protect against heart disease, prevent osteoporosis and help you lose weight?

Olive leaf extract is one of the most powerful, all natural antimicrobial agents known to science. It has been shown to treat colds, flu, and infections of the sinuses and upper respiratory tract. But the health benefits don’t stop there.

Olive leaf extract fights a wide range of disease-causing bacteria and helps cure…
    • Yeast infections
    • Fungal infections
    • Herpes
    • Chronic fatigue
    • Allergies
    • Psoriasis
    • A host of other pathogens

Olive leaf extract has been praised for boosting energy…invigorating heart health…strengthening the immune system…preventing osteoporosis…and even aiding in weight loss!

An Antioxidant Bonanza

Antioxidants protect the body from scavenging free radicals that promote disease and premature aging. Olive leaf extract from the Mission and Manzanillo olive trees contains the noteworthy antioxidants resveratrol and tyrosol, but the true antioxidant champs are the phytochemicals oleuropein and hydroxytrosol.
 benefits of olive leaf extract
In fact, hydroxytrosol has a free radical absorbance capacity ten times higher than that of green tea and 400% higher than that of vitamin C!

A Heart-Healthy Nutrient

The benefits of olive leaf extract have been shown to treat all the major precursors of cardiovascular illness.

It inhibits the oxidation of LDL cholesterol by discouraging this disease-causing cholesterol from collecting on blood vessel platelets and clogging arteries.

It reduces inflammation (the number one cause of heart disease) and boosts circulation, thereby relaxing arteries, lowering blood pressure, and normalizing arrhythmias.

A Powerful Weapon Against Osteoporosis

A recent study published in Osteoporosis International showed that concentrations of oleuropein stimulated the number and activity of osteoblast cells (the cells that are responsible for bone formation).

Not only did the compound increase osteoblasts, but it also increased the expression of genes linked to osteoblast production.

Researchers summarized the results of their findings, stating: “Our data suggest that oleuropein, highly abundant in olive tree products included in the Mediterranean diet, could prevent age-related bone loss and osteoporosis.”

Good news for the 75 million around the world who have or are at risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition that results in low bone mass and significantly increases your risk of fractures, particularly of the spine, hips and wrists.

A Slimming Infusion

Results from an animal study published in the Journal of Nutrition showed that the benefits of olive leaf extract helps stimulate the thyroid compound that sheds pounds.

Researchers at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia gave coffee or green tea infused with olive leaf extract to rats with health issues such as fatty liver, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance.

Within 8 weeks, the rats had shed the fat and completely reversed all their obesity-related health conditions.

Reap the Benefits of the Mediterranean Diet

People who follow a Mediterranean diet have a reduced risk for certain cancers, heart disease and viruses. Health experts say you can enjoy these same benefits by supplementing with olive leaf extract in the form of a liquid concentrate, dried extract, dried leaf tea, powder, or capsule.

If supplementing with a capsule, take 1-2 pills a day (approximately 500mg). If suffering from a cold or flu, take 2 capsules every 6 hours, and if battling an infection take a maximum dose of 3-4 pills every 6 hours.

Do not take olive leaf extract if you are on statin drugs, diabetic drugs, or are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Olive Leaf Extract Benefits Shown to Eliminate Cancer Tumors By Oleropein

No article date

Did you know about Olive Leaf Extract Benefits? The phytochemical known as oleuropein found in olive leaf extract have been shown to eliminate cancer tumors in 9 to 12 days.
olive leaft extract benefits

It’s no wonder that people who live in the Mediterranean area — who consume 20 times more olive oil than Americans — have half the incidences of cancer than the U.S. Both the olive leaf and olive fruit have active polyphenol properties, but in the processing of the fruit and oil, many are removed.

Even so, olive oil contains enough polyphenols that deliver many healthful benefits. It is the olive leaf, however, that is prized for its anti-tumor, anti-microbial and anti-viral properties.

The olive leaf comes from a small evergreen tree that is native to the Mediterranean regions. Its medicinal use dates back 6,000 years ago, and the olive leaf is even referred to in scriptural passages as “the tree of life”.

Almost 2,500 years ago, Hippocrates — who is acknowledged as the “father of medicine” — prescribed concentrated olive oil extracted from the olive leaf for numerous health conditions, such as muscular pain, ulcers, and intestinal infections.

After four decades of research, scientists have identified oleuropein as the substance in the olive leaf, which accounts for its medicinal properties.

Oleuropein is a phytochemical that contains one of the most powerful polyphenol antioxidants in existence, and has been shown to be a potent anti-cancer compound.

12 different antioxidants — including hydroxytyrosol, which has an oxygen radical absorbance capacity 10 times higher than green tea, and tyrosol, which helps protect cells from injury caused by oxidation.

Olive Leaf Extract Benefits May Help Stop Cancer Dead In Its Tracks…

Scientists initially believed that olive leaf extract had the ability to “cure” various diseases. But they later found that it actually does not cure disease directly — rather, it stuns or kills off pathogens.

A pathogen is a disease-producing agent (such as virus or bacteria).

When the olive leaf extract interrupts pathogen activity, it essentially “unplugs” and “derails” disease in the making… or inhibits the proliferation of disease in the body. Once pathogens are stopped dead in their tracks, the immune system can rebuild itself and “cure” disease at its root.

Some of the most amazing anti-tumor results were reported by Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications. When oleuropein was administered orally to mice that had developed tumors, it regressed the tumors in 9 to 12 days.

The biochemists in this study reported that, “No viable cancer cells could be recovered from these tumors. These observations elevate oleuropein from a non-toxic antioxidant into a potent anti-tumor agent with direct effects against tumor cells.”

And it’s not just cancer that olive leaf extract has been shown to treat successfully.

Clinical tests conducted by the New York University School of Medicine showed that olive leaf extract is able to change the pathways of HIV-type infections as well, and may even reverse these conditions.

In his book titled Olive Leaf Extract, Dr. Morton Walker recommends using olive leaf extract for its miraculous effects on more than 125 infectious and chronic diseases.

Olive Leaf Extract Benefits and Therapeutic Uses Include

  • Inactivation of bacterial, viral, and retroviral infections
  • Prevention of dental and surgical infection
  • Eradication of the HIV virus, as well as herpes and shingles
  • Effective treatment for colds, flu, and pneumonia
  • Decrease of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome symptoms
  • Increased circulation, blood flow, and reduction of free radical damage (which help combat heart disease, hypertension, and arthritis)
  • Antifungal and antibacterial action on athlete’s foot, mycotic nails, yeast infections, and chlamydia
Along with a host of other therapeutic effects.

Studies show olive leaf extract is safe to take at therapeutic levels with no side effects. It is widely available at health food stores in the form of capsules or tablets.

Dosing will necessarily vary depending on the severity of the disease or health condition. As a general rule, the higher the concentration of oleuropein in a particular product, the more effective it is thought to be.

Dr. Walker recommends an olive leaf extract with an oleuropein concentration of at least 6%. There are brands that have a concentration of 15% or higher. Consult with your naturopathic doctor for proper dosing.

As a preventive measure, health professionals recommend one or two capsules equaling 250 to 500 milligrams. Caution: It is not advisable for olive leaf extract to be administered in conjunction with antibiotics or other fungus or mold medicines.
