You’ve heard what to look out for for symptoms of the novel coronavirus, and by now you have likely heard firsthand accounts of what it’s like from friends or family that are experiencing it themselves. For many people, COVID-19 causes mild to moderate symptoms that do not require hospitalization. In certain high-risk populations, like people over 60, people who are immunocompromised, and people with pre existing conditions, the virus can be severe or even fatal.
Here are three pre-existing chronic conditions that may make it harder for an otherwise healthy person to fight off the new coronavirus:
Heart disease
Heart disease is part of a group of conditions known as cardiovascular disease, in which the blood vessels in your body are damaged or unable to function normally. COVID-19 causes fever and increased inflammation, which can increase the stress on the heart and blood vessels. COVID-19 has been shown to cause pneumonia, which makes it harder for your lungs to oxygenate the blood, which puts further stress on your heart.
Heart disease also tends to accompany other underlying conditions that can increase risk, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, lung disease, and liver disease. These all weaken your body’s defense against infection.
Chronic lung conditions
People with chronic lung conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or pulmonary hypertension are at higher risk of developing severe symptoms from the pneumonia that can accompany COVID-19. Your lungs are crucial for bringing oxygen to your body. When this is compromised, it can be lethal.
Diabetes
Diabetes is a condition where your body either stops responding properly to insulin or doesn’t make enough insulin. This results in high blood sugar if it’s not managed properly. Diabetes can also cause a number of secondary issues, including a compromised immune system. Because the immune system is compromised in diabetes, it can be harder for your body to fight off COVID-19. High blood sugar may even help the virus survive longer.
Now more than ever it is important to maintain a healthy diet, especially if you are dealing with a chronic condition. A healthy diet not only helps to manage the chronic condition, it can help keep your body and immune system in fighting shape to reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19.
In addition to following an overall healthy diet, adding certain immune-boosting foods can help boost your immune system to better ward off or fight viruses.

  • Broccoli stems and florets contain a bioactive compound called sulforaphane that stimulates the immune system to increase natural killer cells, which may help in fighting viruses. Broccoli sprouts contain even higher amounts. In a study in people given a nasal flu vaccine, those who consumed 1 cup of broccoli sprouts in a smoothie had less flu virus remaining compared to a control group.

  • Mushrooms can stimulate the immune system in a different way. A study found that 1 ⅓ cups of mushrooms could increase IgA by 55%. IgA (immunoglobulin A) is a natural antibody that exists in the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, and is an important factor for preventing viral infections.

  • Aged garlic is another useful addition. Like broccoli, aged garlic extract can increase levels of natural killer cells. Even more important — in a clinical trial people taking aged garlic had fewer cold and flu symptoms and reported 58% fewer missed days of work due to illness. Aged garlic extract can be found as a supplement, or you can make it at home.

Lies won’t stop Covid-19

WASHINGTON-BASED military think tanks constantly warn of possible attacks by the wicked North Koreans who have a large arsenal of chemical and biological weapons and missiles to deliver to North America.

Quest for a drug to combat coronavirus
(Picture link: https://www.graphicnews.com/en/pages/40108/health-quest-for-c-19-drugs)

So do Britain, France, Russia, India, Pakistan, China, India and Israel. The US still has a very large, lethal arsenal of chemical and biological weapons.
I recently wrote of how the Bush administration supplied Iraq with feeder stocks to make anthrax, Q Fever and other biowarfare materials for use against Iranians.
And yet we have just seen from the Covid-19 scare how woefully unprepared the US is for a chemical/biological attack despite being a world leader in germ and chemical warfare.
As the bodies of Covid-19 victims pile up from New York to New Zealand, politicians are waging a furious blame game over the pandemic.
At first, President Donald Trump dismissed Covid-19 as a simple cold or flu and, in the best dictatorial tradition, scared into silence scientists and politicians who disagreed with him for over a month.
China’s General Secretary Xi Jinping, or high-level Communist Party officials, may have delayed information about the Wuhan virus for six days before news of the killer virus was revealed and a common party response agreed upon.
Covering up bad news is standard procedure in Communist and autocratic regimes.
That’s a major reason why the slow motion collapse of the Soviet Union’s economy went unknown to the Kremlin until too late.
In Trumpistan, none of the sycophants and yes-men around the president, except for the admirable Dr Fauci, dared contradict the Great White Father cum Physician cum Mussolini in the White House. Anyone who does quickly gets a “you’re fired”.
Many of Trump’s evangelical supporters in the Bible Belt view him as a semi-religious figure, a sort of holy man who can, in the best Old Testament Biblical tradition, stop or even cure plague and pestilence. That’s what Trump’s claim to be able to miraculously end the coronavirus plague by Easter was all about.
Next, fearing American voters would blame him for ineptitude and quackery for downplaying the crisis, Trump sought to lay blame on China and the World Health Organisation for the pandemic.
Flat-earth Midwestern Republicans believe the UN and anything that sounds international is satanic. This includes the bumbling, overly bureaucratic WHO which has indeed been too easy on China as the right-wing Republicans claim.
But this is the same UN-directed outfit that played a key role in repressing or even eradicating malaria, smallpox, Ebola, river blindness, bilharzia and other dreadful plagues of Africa and Asia. WHO has also had some success in fighting dengue and tsetse flies.
After studying the timeline of recent events in Wuhan, it appears to me that there was some confusion among Chinese medical authorities because of the unknown nature of the new virus.
It took them close to a week to evaluate the virus which was at first believed to be a virulent influenza.
Their confusion was minor compared to the muddled reaction of US political and medical authorities and Trump-supporting evangelical groups who each had their own beliefs (usually mistaken) about the new virus.
Trump was very successful at laying blame on China – just as the lethal 1918 flu epidemic that began in US Army camps and killed millions of people was successfully marketed to the public as the “Spanish flu”.
In an effort to come up with a snake-oil cure, Trump told Americans to take the anti-malaria drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine.
French doctors warned these drugs could provoke serious, even lethal heart problems.
They were quite right. I took chloroquine while in the jungle in southern Africa while covering the fighting between South African (SADF) forces and East-Bloc backed African Congress forces.
I developed a mild but still very scary psychological problem and was sick as hell. Who wants to be psycho and paranoid in the deepest jungle?
One remarkable factor in this 21st century plague is how successful China appears to be so far in bottling up the Covid plague.
It may be the Chinese are fudging the facts as Republicans, who never lie, claim.
However, I think the key to China’s success has been the ubiquity of special Communist Party committees who ruthlessly and successfully managed the epidemic. Every Chinese factory, apartment building, school and organisation has its very own party official whose job is to spy and report on every person in their group.
Each member is graded and guided. “Good” party members received better apartments, school slots, factory jobs and retirement care based on their grade book.
The all-seeing party knows all, sees all, and can control just about everyone. That’s how China has so far bested this plague – though of course Trump will try to take the credit.

How ventilators work

How ventilators work

BY JORDI BOU
March 31, 2020 - Inventors, academics, carmakers and aerospace firms are rushing to build hundreds of thousands of ventilators to help save the lives of people with Coronavirus-related breathing difficulties.
For patients with the worst effects of the infection, a ventilator offers the best chance of survival.

A mechanical ventilator unit pushes air into a patient’s lungs, replicating the normal breathing when disease causes the lungs to fail.

Big names of industry such as General Motors, Airbus, McLaren and Dyson have offered their engineering expertise or factory lines, which in many cases have slowed or halted because of the pandemic.

University College London engineers have worked with clinicians at UCLH and Mercedes Formula One to build what is known as the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device. Mercedes F1 is offering to build up to 1,000 CPAP machines per day.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), some 80% of people with Covid-19 recover without needing hospital treatment.

But one person in six becomes seriously ill and can develop breathing difficulties. In these severe cases, the virus causes damage to the lungs.

China tightens quality control on medical supplies exports

BEIJING: Chinese regulators on Sunday (april 26) have taken new measures to strengthen quality control over exports of medical supplies and further regulate outbound procedures to better aid the global battle against the Covid-19 (coronavirus) disease outbreak.

Sunday, 26 Apr 2020

BEIJING: Chinese regulators on Sunday (april 26) have taken new measures to strengthen quality control over exports of medical supplies and further regulate outbound procedures to better aid the global battle against the Covid-19 (coronavirus) disease outbreak.
China will step up supervision on exports of non-surgical face masks, which are required to meet the quality standards of either China or respective export destinations starting from Sunday, according to a joint release from the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), the General Administration of Customs and the State Administration For Market Regulation.

The MOC will confirm the list of qualified mask manufacturers, and the State Administration for Market Regulation will offer a list of substandard products and producers to provide a basis for customs authorities to clear exports.

Exporters of non-surgical face masks should file the joint declaration of the exporter and importer when going through customs clearance to make sure they are up to standards and will not be used for surgical purposes, according to the new policy.

Starting on Sunday, businesses exporting products verified or registered overseas, including Covid-19 testing kits, medical face masks, medical protective suits, ventilators and infrared thermometers, should provide an export declaration of medical supplies to customs authorities, which will then clear the products in accordance to the business lists.

China seizes over 89 million shoddy face masks

BEIJING: China has confiscated over 89 million poor quality face masks, a government official said Sunday (April 26), as Beijing faces a slew of complaints about faulty protective gear exported worldwide.

Sunday, 26 Apr 2020

Demand for protective equipment has soared as nations across the globe battle the deadly Covid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, which has infected nearly 2.9 million people.

But a number of countries have complained about faulty masks and other products exported by China, mostly for use by medical workers and vulnerable groups.

As of Friday, China's market regulators had inspected nearly 16 million businesses and seized over 89 million masks and 418,000 pieces of protective gear, said Gan Lin, deputy director of the State Administration of Market Regulation, at a press conference.

Regulators had also seized ineffective disinfectants worth over 7.6 million yuan (US$1.1 million), she said.

It is unclear how much of the confiscated goods were destined for markets abroad.

In a bid to eliminate poor-quality products, China released new rules Saturday saying even non-medical masks must meet both national and international quality standards.

Exporters must file a written declaration that their medical products meet the safety requirements of the destination country, the ministry of commerce said in a statement.

The tighter rules come after several countries including Spain, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Turkey were forced to recall hundreds of thousands of shoddy masks and pieces of protective gear imported from China.

The Canadian government last week said that about one million face masks purchased from China failed to meet proper standards for healthcare professionals.

Dutch health officials last month recalled over half a million Chinese masks -- which had already been sent to hospitals - after complaints that they did not close over the face properly, or had defective filters.

According to official figures, China's daily mask production has passed 116 million.

In the first two months of the year, a staggering 8,950 new manufacturers started producing masks in China, according to business data platform Tianyancha.

Despite the nationwide crackdown, businesses were continuing with illicit production of medical equipment since it was a way to earn "quick money" Jin Hai, a Chinese customs official said earlier this month.

Over 31.6 million faulty masks and 509,000 protective suits destined for export had been confiscated by port officials as of mid-April, he said. - AFP

Conspiracy Theory Misinterprets Goals of Gates Foundation

DEBUNKING FALSE STORIES
Quick Take
A conspiracy theory falsely claims Bill Gates is plotting to use COVID-19 testing and a future vaccine to track people with microchips. The Gates Foundation has advocated for expanded testing and has funded vaccine research, but neither of those involves implanted microchips.

Conspiracy Theory Misinterprets Goals of Gates Foundation

Full Story
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed millions of dollars to research treatments and vaccines for COVID-19 as the pandemic continues to spread across the globe.
Those endeavors are now fueling a conspiracy theory that falsely claims Bill Gates has plans to use the eventual vaccine to “track people.”
That claim has circulated in conspiracy theory groups online over the last few weeks, but it recently graduated to a more mainstream audience.
On April 6, Emerald Robinson, White House correspondent for the conservative website Newsmax, tweeted about Gates with a reference to another debunked conspiracy theory and concluded, “He basically controls global health policy. What’s the plan? Using vaccines to track people.”
Two days later, Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked U.S. Attorney General William Barr about Gates favoring “what some would say, tracking mechanisms.”
The claim appears to have developed after Gates participated in a March 18 forum on Reddit. There, he answered a question about maintaining businesses during the pandemic.
Bill Gates, March 18: Eventually we will have some digital certificates to show who has recovered or been tested recently or when we have a vaccine who has received it.
The following day, a website called Biohackinfo.com posted a story with the headline: “Bill Gates will use microchip implants to fight coronavirus.” It’s been shared more than 13,000 times on Facebook, according to data from CrowdTangle, and a YouTube video based on the story has been viewed more than 1.8 million times.
The story cited Gates’ answer in the forum and then declared, “The ‘digital certificates’ Gates was referring to are human-implantable ‘QUANTUM-DOT TATTOOS.'”
But that’s not true. It’s a mash-up of two unrelated things.
First, digital certificates are used to send encrypted information over the internet, as in the common case of electronic signatures which are used to verify identity. They were officially defined by what is now called the Telecommunication Standardization Sector in 1988 and have always been virtual, not physical.
When Gates mentioned their use in the forum, he was referring to digital certificates as part of an effort to create a digital platform that would expand home-based, self-administered testing for COVID-19, the Gates Foundation said in an email to FactCheck.org.
He referred to the same effort to ramp up home testing at another point in the forum, saying, “The testing in the US is not organized yet. In the next few weeks I hope the Government fixes this by having a website you can go to to find out about home testing and kiosks… Whenever there is a positive test it should be seen to understand where the disease is and whether we need to strengthen the social distancing. South Korea did a great job on this including digital contact tracing.”
South Korea, which has implemented an extensive testing system, created a website that showed information about where patients who tested positive for COVID-19 had been in order to alert others in the area. Although the information on the site is anonymous, there has been some criticism that it’s an invasion of privacy.
Still, that’s a long way from “microchip implants.”
The second part of the claim — and the one that likely led to the microchip assertion — is a reference to unrelated research that was funded by the Gates Foundation and published in December. In an effort to address the problem of poor record-keeping in “low-resource settings,” such as developing countries, that research proposed keeping a record of vaccination on a patient’s skin. It tested an invisible dye that could last up to five years and be read with a specially adapted smartphone.
Kevin McHugh, a bioengineering professor at Rice University who worked on the study, told us by email that the ink couldn’t be used as a tracking device.
“These markings were developed to provide a vaccination record and there is no ability to track anyone’s movements,” McHugh said. “This technology is only able to provide very limited (e.g. non-personalized) data locally. These markings require direct line-of-sight imaging from a distance of less than 1 foot. Remote or continuous tracking is simply not possible for a variety of technical reasons.”
The Gates Foundation confirmed to us by email that this research is unrelated to any measures related to COVID-19 vaccines.
So, this claim can be added to the heap of bogus conspiracy theories about microchip tracking and Bill Gates.

Conspiracy theories blaming Bill Gates for the coronavirus pandemic are exploding online

Bill Gates’ vocal stance on how to combat the coronavirus has made him a massive target of online conspiracy theorists, a New York Times analysis suggested.

  • Conspiracy theories linking Bill Gates to the coronavirus pandemic have surged online, an analysis by The New York Times suggested.
  • The newspaper’s analysis found more than 16,000 Facebook posts linking Gates with the virus, as well as 10 YouTube videos espousing the conspiracy theories that had garnered 5 million views.
  • Gates has been vocal about taking measures to combat the spread of the virus, and his foundation has poured $250 million into response efforts.

Bill Gates’ vocal stance on how to combat the coronavirus has made him a massive target of online conspiracy theorists, a New York Times analysis suggested.
The media analysis company Zignal Labs found that posts on social media falsely claiming that the Microsoft founder engineered the virus had exploded since the beginning of this year, The Times reported. In total, Zignal Labs found that conspiracy theories involving Gates and the virus had been mentioned 1.2 million times on social media and TV broadcasts, The Times said.
The Times said its analysis found more than 16,000 Facebook posts about Gates and the virus that had garnered about 900,000 likes and comments. It said the 10 most popular YouTube videos in March and April spreading misinformation about Gates had attracted 5 million views.
The newspaper said it traced the theories back to a tweet in late January by a YouTube personality linked to QAnon claiming that Gates knew about the pandemic ahead of time, citing a vaccine patent filed by a British group called the Pirbright Institute that had received funding from the Gates Foundation. The theory was picked up two days later by Infowars.
However, the vaccine was not related to the novel coronavirus but a different coronavirus that affects poultry, The Times said. In late January, the fact-checking site Full Fact debunked rumors circulating on social media that the Pirbright Institute had filed for a patent related to the novel coronavirus in 2015.
According to The Times, the surge in conspiracy theories blaming Gates seemed to correlate with prominent right-wing and anti-vaccination figures picking up the narrative. Roger Stone, Trump’s former campaign adviser who earlier this year was sentenced to 40 months in prison, suggested on a radio show this week that “whether Bill Gates played some role in the creation and spread of this virus is open for vigorous debate” the New York Post reported.
Gates’ philanthropic organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has pledged $250 million toward fighting the coronavirus pandemic, including developing and manufacturing a vaccine. Gates has appeared on TV and written op-ed articles voicing his opinions about how to fight the virus, and he recently criticized President Donald Trump for withdrawing US funding for the World Health Organization.
Gates is not the only focus of conspiracy theories about the virus. In Britain, over 50 phone masts have been targeted by arson attacks linked to a popular conspiracy theory about the coronavirus and 5G technology.
There is a degree of crossover between these theories. Full Fact has also debunked a popular Facebook post that circulated in mid-March claiming both that the coronavirus was a fiction designed to disguise physical damage being done by 5G and that Gates created the virus to control the world and create a vaccine.
