Dr. Oz’s Sad Trip Down the Rabbit Hole

It is actually sad to see Dr. Oz degenerate into a pseudoscience-promoting political hack trying to gain favour with right-wing conspiracy theorists.  He could have done so much good from the pulpit gifted him by Oprah.

It seems that Dr. Mehmet Oz’s transformation from respected surgeon to deplorable pseudoscience advocate is complete. He recently slandered Dr. Fauci as a “petty tyrant” and then called him “cowardly” for not taking the bait to get into a “doctor-to-doctor debate” with the surgeon-turned TV snake oil salesman-turned politician. Oz may once have been a very competent physician, but he is way, way out of his depth when it comes to immunology, virology and epidemiology. He is just not in Dr. Fauci’s league.

Dr. Oz has championed “energy medicine,” for which he received the James Randi Foundation’s “Pigasus Award” that recognizes achievements in pseudoscience. He has hyped diet pills devoid of any evidence,  has given credence to talking to the dead, and hit bottom with marketing “Dr. Oz’s homeopathic starter kit.” Homeopathy, based on non-existent molecules treating existing disease, is the most absurd of all the “alternative” therapies.

If Oz didn’t quite hit the bottom with his promotion of homeopathy, he surely did so now, jumping into bed with the nutcases at Fox to gain support for his preposterous Senate candidacy. This is a man who was eviscerated at a Senate committee hearing when questioned about his shameless plugging of baseless dietary supplements, and a man who was the subject of a study in the prestigious British Medical Journal that found 15% of his recommendations on the “Dr. Oz Show” were contradicted by evidence and another 40% had no evidence to back up the claims made.

Oz may bluster about challenging Dr. Fauci to a debate, but for Fauci, that would be like having a battle with an unarmed man. Oz can’t hold a candle to Fauci’s accomplishments, expertise or class.

It is actually sad to see Dr. Oz degenerate into a pseudoscience-promoting political hack trying to gain favour with right-wing conspiracy theorists.  He could have done so much good from the pulpit gifted him by Oprah.

At least so far he hasn’t promoted the hair dye he uses.

Vicious attack on Dr. Oz

... actually waged by biotech mafia; plot to destroy Oz launched after episode on glyphosate toxicity went viral

Friday, April 17, 2015
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

(NaturalNews) Dr. Oz should be given a Congressional medal of some kind for his willingness to expose the truth about glyphosate on national television. In a recent episode that went viral, Dr. Oz discussed the toxicity of the biotech industry's favorite pesticide "glyphosate" -- a dangerous chemical that even the World Health Organization now admits likely causes cancer.

In response to this episode, the so-called "Monsanto Mafia" went berserk with all their usual character assassination tactics, and now they've come up with a contrived plot -- a campaign of intimidation and character smearing -- to try to silence Dr. Oz by destroying his credibility.

A letter signed by ten doctors -- all of whom have financial ties to industry -- calls for Columbia University to force Dr. Oz to resign from the university's Department of Surgery. This letter is a tremendously educational exhibit of the mafia tactics used by the biotech industry, as it essentially claims Dr. Oz has lost his mind and is now endangering the public. "Whatever the nature of his pathology, members of the public are being misled and endangered, which makes Dr. Oz's presence on the faculty of a prestigious medical institution unacceptable," the letter reads.

Of course, all the people who signed this letter have no qualms whatsoever with farmers spraying thousands of tons of cancer-causing glyphosate herbicide chemicals on all the foods we eat. That's perfectly acceptable to them and poses "no danger," they claim. It is Dr. Oz and his crazy, wild, irresponsible advice that people should eat wholesome foods and take charge of their own health that's now deemed a threat in this society... a society dominated by the financial interests of biotech and pharmaceutical corporations that profit from sickness and disease.

The real sickness, however, is found in the fact that these "Monsanto Mafia" operatives are given any credibility at all by the media. It doesn't take much poking around into their backgrounds to find out they're actually a gang of industry-funded junk science egomaniacs and hucksters.

The "Monsanto Mafia" is behind the attack on Dr. Oz

This plot to destroy Dr. Oz originates with all the usual "Monsanto Mafia" suspects such as Henry Miller, the indignant biotech puppet and Stanford biotech operative who helped run disinformation campaigns and fake science front operations for Big Tobacco. See the full details on Henry Miller here.

Also signing the attack letter against Dr. Oz was Dr. Gilbert Ross, executive director of the American Council on Science and Health -- a shady industry front group that spreads biotech disinformation and lies under the false label of "science."

Dr. Ross is a convicted criminal and Medicaid fraud artist. He was "convicted of racketeering, mail fraud and conspiracy," and was "sentenced to 47 months in jail, $40,000 in forfeiture and restitution of $612,855" in a scheme to defraud the Medicaid system, reports the U.S. Right to Know campaign in a page describing the ACSH's sleazy practices.

See the Sourcewatch entry on the ACSH here. Ralph Nader once described the ACSH as "...a consumer front organization for its business backers. It has seized the language and style of the existing consumer organizations, but its real purpose, you might say, is to glove the hand that feeds it."

The ACSH is pro-DDT, pro Agent Orange and loves asbestos. It promotes some of the most outlandish and mind-boggling quackery and junk science ever witnessed. From Sourcewatch.org:

ACSH calls the U.S. ban on DDT one of the 20 worst unfounded health scares of the 20th century. It ridicules the risks that chemical "endocrine disruptors" pose to human health and fertility. In addition to pesticides and chemical food additives, it has defended asbestos, Agent Orange and nuclear power. Whelan's nutritional advice has also raised eyebrows among health experts, many of whom take exception to her claims that there is "no such thing as 'junk food,' " and that "There is insufficient evidence of a relationship between diet and any disease.

The ACSH also solicited money from Big Tobacco to fund what it called opposition to the "pseudoscience" and "misinformation" in the media's claims that smoking cigarettes was bad for your health. As Sourcewatch.org explains:

In December, 1980 ACSH co-founder Stare wrote to tobacco giant Philip Morris seeking financial support. "We are a voice of scientific reason in a sea of pseudo science, exaggeration and misinformation. We believe it would be to your benefit to help ACSH," he wrote. Stare explained that the "basic" ACSH corporate benefactor membership was $3,000 "but we hope you will contribute $10,000 or more."

Linked to violent Monsanto operatives like Jon Entine

These are the very same people whose circles of "Monsanto Mafia" character assassins include Jon Entine, a former Forbes.com writer and American Enterprise Institute research fellow who also violently choked his wife in front of their daughter, according to the court documents linked below. Entine has ties to the American Council on Science and Health, and has even authored quack science publications for them such as a booklet called "Scared to Death" which claims atrazine is totally harmless. (All these biotech mafia operatives repeat the same lies over and over again, claiming agricultural chemicals are completely harmless.)

Here's what else Jon Entine, author for the ACSH, is known for doing:

- Physically attacked his wife Ellen Turner, "...became very belligerent and aggressive toward Plaintiff [his wife]. He pushed her, shoved her, gouged her eye, choked her and pushed her into the porch column. He slammed the door and refused to release [their daughter]. Plaintiff finally called the Indian Hill Rangers..."

SOURCE: Jon Entine public divorce document #12 and Jon Entine investigation Part One.

- Psychologically traumatized his own daughter in the process. "This occurred in the presence of [their daughter] who has been psychologically traumatized as a result. [Daughter] is afraid of [Jon Entine]... he has become increasingly and exceedingly hostile and belligerent. [The wife] fears that [Entine's] mental health has deteriorated..." (same source document as above)

- Was the subject of an urgent restraining order filed by his wife which ordered Jon Entine to refrain from "Physically, verbally and / or psychologically abusing, annoying, harassing or injuring [Ellen Turner] or the minor child of the parties...

- Engaged in child abuse / neglect / domestic violence according to a sworn statement by his wife, Ellen Turner. In the court document shown below, she pleaded with the courts to protect herself and her daughter from any further violence. The document was filed with Hamilton County Clerk Gregory Hartmann, Case # DR0500131: (bold added)

I have filed at 3109.27 Affidavit and have specifically addressed therein the child abuse / neglect / domestic violence physical harm provisions of O.R.C. 3109.04, 3109.051 and 3109.052 as those statutes pertain to both parents and this case.

- Was reportedly fired by ABC News for being "out of control" and saying "wild things." As reported in an earlier Natural News article:

ABC discovered Entine had made a number of mistakes in his methodology so serious that they had in effect fired him some ten days before. Entine, probably unknown to ABC, was however still picking up his messages from a phone on his old desk in the ABC building. We now understand from ABC sources that Entine is regarded as out of control and has been running around saying some wild things. SOURCE: Ivan Fallon, letter from Deputy Editor of The Sunday Times, October 8, 1993).

Attack on Dr. Oz is actually all about GMOs and glyphosate

The attack letter against Dr. Oz was actually based on Dr. Oz's coverage of glyphosate and GMOs. That's what enraged the "Monsanto Mafia" to push forward with an attempt to totally destroy the reputation of Dr. Oz.

It's the same tactic the industry has used against every activist, author, scientist, doctor and news publisher who questions the safety of GMOs and glyphosate. There are countless cases where publishers have also been threatened and intimidated into silence over their coverage of GMOs, glyphosate and the toxicity of Roundup herbicide.

The "Monsanto Mafia" has even infiltrated and taken over Wikipedia, turning it into a corporate-run disinfo site dominated by paid operatives who vandalize pages to support the profits of corporations like Monsanto. A new website called Wikipedia Warning is now calling for a Warning label to be placed on all Wikipedia pages to warn the public how the encyclopedia has been taken over by corporate operatives. A Kickstarter campaign also hopes to raise enough money to publish a book detailing Wikipedia's lies and disinfo attacks on the healing arts.

Jon Entine, by the way, was a key operative in vandalizing the Wikipedia pages of the GMO Seralini study. Under the user name "RunJonRun," Entine repeatedly vandalized pages to attack Seralini and discredit his scientific work which showed GMOs and glyphosate causing cancer tumors in rats. Entine tried to hide his identity but was eventually exposed.

Corporate-funded racketeering and mafia operations underlie the biotech and pharmaceutical industries

What we are really seeing with this latest attack on Dr. Oz is not "science" but "racketeering." In fact, if any group in America should be arrested and tried under the RICO act, it's the biotech mafia and its network of paid-off scientists (like Henry Miller), disinfo operatives and character assassins (like Jon Entine). These racketeers have infiltrated the media (such as Forbes.com), non-profit groups (American Enterprise Institute), universities (George Mason University), Wikipedia, medical journals and a long list of other entities that wield influence in society. Their tactics include intimidation and threats, character assassination, buying off scientists, spreading wildly false information about anti-GMO activists, and even publishing the home addresses of targeted individuals who they hope will be killed.

The ACSH is at the center of all this, and the organization has on its board people like Dr. Paul Offit, the whacko vaccine fanatic who claims injecting pregnant women with aluminum is good for the developing fetus! Offit fits perfectly with the ACSH group of malicious chemical pushers whose actions condone the mass poisoning of the human population with deadly chemicals and toxic metals.

That's what all these junk science pushers seem to have in common: A sickening desire to see humanity poisoned with chemicals in food and medicine. As long as they are making money from it, they don't seem to mind all the rising rates of autism and cancer around the world. (Paul Offit makes money from the very same vaccines that are damaging and killing children.)

See the list of industry-funded quack "scientists" and sellouts who are attacking Dr. Oz

Here's the list of those who are trying to destroy Dr. Oz, all of whom have strong financial ties to the very industries threatened by anyone who tells the truth about disease prevention, toxic herbicides and self-healing with nutritional therapies.

This list should probably double as the 2015 Mafia Science Hall of Shame awards list:

food
Dr. Oz viciously attacks organic foods and farmers markets, pushes feedlot beef, urges clueless consumers to eat more pesticides and GMO (opinion)

Saturday, December 01, 2012
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com

(NaturalNews) Dr. Oz has finally done it: He has sold out to Big Ag by declaring organic foods to be "elitist," "snooty" and no better than conventional foods. The man who once urged Americans to eat organic has sold his soul to the criminally-run food giants in a mind-blowing editorial piece recently published in TIME Magazine.

Look for Dr. Oz to promote GMOs next, as cozying up to Monsanto probably won't be too far behind. The man is already on the record pushing vaccines, talking about how good they are for "public health" while failing to mention that vaccines admittedly contain mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum and MSG.

He's also the same guy who was behind the "RealAge" internet scheme that recruited people into a promotional network where they were barraged by drug-pushing ads from Big Pharma. Dr. Oz also owned a huge number of option shares in a vaccine technology company.

In his TIME Magazine editorial piece, Dr. Oz declares organic foods to be "elitist" and appropriate only for "the 1%." This clever bit of propaganda is designed to try to align conventional foods (i.e. pesticide ridden GMO foods) with the "99%" by making them sound more populist. As if, the "People's food" is pesticides and GMOs, you see.

Does the man have no shame? Is there any corporate poison he won't promote to his viewers?

Oz declares organic food is "not democratic"

"Organic food is great, it's just not very democratic," Dr. Oz declares, as if choosing organic is somehow an affront to America. "You don't need to eat like the 1% to eat healthily," he says. In other words, keep sucking down more GMOs, pesticides, herbicides and chemicals, and you'll be a good little American food slave. Buying organic is anti-American, you're being told.

Dr. Oz's message, of course, has become indistinguishable from that of Monsanto. It's all the same deception: You don't need clean, non-GMO food to be healthy. Keep eating all the conventional crap that poisons you with synthetic chemicals, and you'll be just fine! How about some GMO Corn Flakes for breakfast, even!

Dr. Oz also attacks farmers markets, because he apparently thinks buying local food is a silly waste of time. "Nutritionally speaking, there is little difference between the farmer's-market bounty and the humble brick from the freezer case," he somehow says with a straight face. Oh really? There's no difference between fresh, locally-grown food versus frozen, corporate-produced food trucked in from a thousand miles away? The ignorance of this guy is just flat-out stunning. Does he know nothing about where food comes from and how it is produced?

Dr. Oz: Eat more feedlot beef!

In an even more grotesque sellout to factory foods, Dr. Oz pushes feedlot beef, saying, "Nutritionally, there is not much difference between, say, grass-fed beef and the feedlot variety."

This is just a flat-out lie, of course. There's a huge difference nutritionally between free-range beef and feedlot beef. Feedlot beef, for starters, is raised on genetically modified corn containing BT toxin, while free-range beef has been consistently found to be higher in omega-3 fatty acids. And that doesn't even cover the ethical and environmental differences. In promoting feedlot beef, Dr. Oz positions himself squarely against the environment while also pushing animal cruelty.

Dr Oz has chosen a side, and it's the side of corporate biotech chemical agriculture

Above all, with this piece Dr. Oz has now clearly chosen a side in the realm of food. Betraying his own viewers and readers, he has chosen to jump in bed with Big Ag, Monsanto, chemical pesticide producers, processed food companies and feedlot cattle factories.

As is now self-evident, Dr. Oz has aligned himself AGAINST everything the organic movement stands for: Honest food, local food, free-range meat, avoidance of GMOs, avoidance of synthetic chemicals and so on. His TIME Magazine piece is an insult to all the good people in America who simply want honest food produced without cruelty or chemicals. Dr. Oz calls those people "snooty" and "elitists."

And what does that make him? Oh, now he's the leader of the "populist poison foods movement" that tries to convince the American masses to eat more GMO, more pesticides, more store-bought foods and more feedlot beef, chicken and pork. The food industry must love this guy! (Watch for new sponsorship contracts to fill his pockets with cash right around the corner...)

Dr. Oz makes himself irrelevant to the discussion on food

By joining forces with Monsanto, Bayer and Big Ag, Dr. Oz has now taken a position squarely against organic foods, against farmer's markets, against free-range animals and against non-GMO.

It begs the question: Why pay any attention to Dr. Oz at all anymore? He's just parroting the same corporate lies and deceptions we can just as easily get from the New York Times, or the USDA, or Monsanto itself. By attacking organics, Dr. Oz has just made himself irrelevant to thinking people everywhere.

He's got nothing to say anymore, and more importantly Dr. Oz no longer has any credibility whatsoever. He's just committed professional suicide. I can't wait to hear what Ronnie Cummins from the Organic Consumers Association has to say about Dr. Oz's comments.

Because Oz has sold out to the GMO-producing, chemical-producing, animal cruelty feedlot sectors of the corrupt food industry, watch for the mainstream media to keep propping up Dr. Oz and attempt to make him a puppet of "authority" on all things related to food and health. Heck, why not make the guy Surgeon General and enact a law population control law that mandates the consumption of feedlot Soylent Green?

Dr. Oz's purported audience is a sham, by the way. Natural News has a far larger audience than Dr. Oz, especially when you count the cumulative IQ points of our respective followers. While the low-IQ zombified consumers may still think Dr. Oz has something resembling credibility, all the in-the-know organic food consumers and activists are fully aware of who is on their side and who isn't. Dr. Oz clearly isn't. His audience exists only as a fabrication of persistent corporate promotion.

Without the corporate backing, Dr. Oz is a nobody. (And by that, I mean he didn't achieve success on his own, he got there with the ongoing support of big, globalist corporate sponsors and backers who have their own agendas to push.)

Spread the word, folks: Dr. Oz is a sellout. Share this story and warn your friends.

Update: Dr. Oz given opportunity to respond to these criticisms

We've just published a list of twenty-one questions for Dr. Oz and have invited him to respond to those questions as well as any points of criticism or debate in this story.

Official response from the Cornucopia Institute

Here's the response from Cornucopia on the TIME Magazine "sellout" piece by Dr. Oz.

The original TIME cover story was published on 12/3/2012 and is entitled "What to Eat Now" by Dr. Mehmet Oz. It's available at:
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2129811,00.html

The full story is available to Time subscribers only. Excerpts from the article, with Cornucopia's responses:

Dr. Oz: "Nutritionally speaking, there is little difference between the farmer's-market bounty and the humble brick from the freezer case."

Cornucopia response: Dr. Oz compares conventional and organic foods throughout the article by focusing exclusively on the differences between a handful of nutrients. This is exactly what the agrochemical and conventional farming industries, and their front group, the Alliance for Food and Farming, would like the American public to focus on. Just two months ago, Dr. Oz told the viewers of his syndicated television show to buy organic vegetables to avoid pesticide residues. Now, in his copywritten Time story, the word "pesticide" or "agricultural chemical" is never mentioned.

Dr. Oz: "Dispelling these myths -- that boutique foods are good, supermarket foods are suspect and you have to spend a lot to eat well -- is critical to improving our nation's health. Organic food is great, it's just not very democratic."

Cornucopia response: What can be more democratic than consumers voting with their food dollars to support organic farmers who protect our environment and our health by eschewing harmful and polluting agrochemicals?

Even if there were no direct benefit to our families (plenty of published scientific research indicates there is), when we choose organic food we are protecting farmers and farmworkers from exposure to toxic chemicals. Many farmers, farmworkers and their children have elevated levels of certain cancers and chronic diseases.

Dr. Oz: "The rise of foodie culture over the past decade has venerated all things small-batch, local-farm and organic -- all with premium price tags. But let's be clear: you don't need to eat like the 1% to eat healthily."

Cornucopia response: Organic foods are not for the "1%." Organic foods are for everybody, and are accessible and affordable to most families who prioritize their expenses. Many organic consumers forgo other "luxuries," whether it be iPhones, vacations, new cars -- all of which are advertised in the same Time magazine where Dr. Oz's article appears -- in order to be able to afford organic foods to protect their family's health. These decisions should be applauded, not turned into a character flaw.

Dr. Oz: "After several years of research and experience, I have come to an encouraging conclusion: the American food supply is abundant, nutritionally sound, affordable and, with a few simple considerations, comparable to the most elite organic diets. Save the cash; the 99% diet can be good for you."

Cornucopia response: Dr. Oz's research apparently missed the countless studies showing that organic foods are nutritionally superior, lower in pesticide residues, lower in antibiotic-resistant pathogen contamination, etc. In addition to being published in peer-reviewed journals, testing by independent sources such as Consumer Reports (Consumer Union) and government agencies such as the USDA corroborate these findings.

Dr. Oz: "I consider it a public-health service to the consumer who has to feed a family of five or the person who wants to make all the right choices and instead is alienated and dejected because the marketing of healthy foods too often blurs into elitism, with all the expense and culinary affectation that implies."

Cornucopia response: The added expense of buying organic foods is an investment in health. In the interest of public health, Dr. Oz should have mentioned the pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, synthetic preservatives, artificial dyes and sweeteners, and other harmful inputs used in conventional farming and food production. Comparing nutrients is just one aspect of a cost-benefit analysis. Dr. Oz owes his loyal fans, who respect his judgment, a more thoughtful and nuanced analysis.

Dr. Oz: "There's no question that free-range chickens and grass-fed, pasture-dwelling cows lead happier -- if not appreciably longer -- lives than animals raised on factory farms. They are also kept free of hormones and antibiotics and are less likely to carry communicable bacteria like E. coli, which are common on crowded feedlots. If these things are important to you and you have the money to spend, then by all means opt for pricier organic meats."

Cornucopia response: Yes, Dr. Oz, avoiding hormones and antibiotics is important to us, and it should be to you, too.

However, just because a package says "free range" or "grass-fed" does not mean it is certified organic, and therefore is not certified to be produced without some of the most dangerous and objectionable drugs. Concerned consumers should go out of their way to seek out the organic seal.

Dr. Oz: "But for the most part, it's O.K. to skip the meat boutiques and the high-end butchers. Nutritionally, there is not much difference between, say, grass-fed beef and the feedlot variety."

Cornucopia response: Dr. Oz's statement is not backed by scientific data, which consistently shows lower levels of cholesterol and saturated fat and higher levels of beneficial omega-3 fats and vitamins in grass-fed beef compared with feedlot beef.

Dr. Oz: "Let's also take a moment to celebrate the tuna-salad sandwich, which is to lunch what the '57 Chevy is to cars--basic and brilliant."

Cornucopia response: It is unconscionable that Dr. Oz touts the nutritional benefits of canned tuna, without mentioning the FDA and EPA warnings concerning methylmercury contamination. The FDA and EPA recommend that women who may become pregnant, pregnant women, nursing mothers and young children limit their consumption of canned light tuna to no more than 12 ounces per week, and their consumption of canned albacore tuna to no more than 6 ounces per week.

Dr. Oz: "Preserves and jams without added sugar can be great sources of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium."

Cornucopia response: Preserves and jams without added sugar often contain added artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, which has been linked in studies to cancer and neurological damage. Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners are banned in organic products.

Dr. Oz: "We know more about the connection between food and health than ever before -- down to the molecular level, actually. This has provided us the curious luxury of being fussy, even snooty, about what we eat, considering some foods, well, below our station. That's silly. Food isn't about cachet. It's about nourishment, pleasure and the profound well-being that comes from the way meals draw us together."

Cornucopia response: Dr. Oz spends the entire article attempting to convince the American public that there are few, if any, differences between conventional and organic foods. Yet in his closing paragraphs he tacitly acknowledges that we "know more about ... food and health than ever before – down to the molecular level." This contradicts his earlier statements that there are no differences.

Most people who buy organic foods do so not because they are "snooty," as Dr. Oz suggests, but because they seek to protect themselves and their families from the widely recognized harmful effects of pesticides and other agrichemicals.

Dr Oz's Immune Boosting Beakfast

Cancer-Fighting Breakfast Boosters

Added to Articles on Wed 04/11/2012

Foods have a surprising power to protect you against cancer, and simple breakfast choices let you put them to work.

Cancer cells crop up in our bodies all the time, and certain foods supply the nutrients that can stop cancer cells from forming and even help your body knock out cancer cells. If we really put the power of food to work, as much as 40 to 60% of cancer cases might never occur.

Here are four quick and easy ways to power up your breakfast with cancer-fighting foods.

Cancer Fighter #1: Papaya
Add some diced papaya to your morning yogurt. That faint reddish color in the papaya comes from lycopene, a powerful antioxidant also found in tomatoes. Papaya has a special carotenoid, too, called beta-cryptoxanthin. Together, these natural compounds knock out free radicals that can cause cancer and can even make cancer cells self-destruct. Researchers are especially zeroing in on papaya’s ability to prevent cervical cancer, and it appears to help against other forms as well.

Have about one papaya per week. Cut it into chunks, and pop it into a plastic bag in the fridge. It will be ready when you are.

To kick it up another notch, try soy yogurt. For several years, researchers have wondered whether soy would help or hurt in the battle against cancer, and the verdict is now in: Soy is a cancer fighter.

Studies show that a serving of soy daily (think soy yogurt, soymilk or tofu) can cut breast cancer risk by as much as 30%. And women previously treated for breast cancer benefit, too. They cut the risk that their cancer will return by about 30% if they include soy products in their routine. The credit goes to natural compounds called isoflavones.

Cancer Fighter #2: Sesame
Top your morning cereal with sesame seeds. Yes, they’ll add a nice crunch, but they are also loaded with vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant. They also provide natural lignans that help balance hormones – a fact that has captured the attention of scientists looking for ways to prevent hormone-related cancers, such as breast and uterine cancer.

Have about one tablespoon of sesame seeds once or twice a week. If you like, save a little for your evening salad.

For extra cancer-fighting power, choose a high-fiber cereal, like old-fashioned oatmeal or bran cereal. Fiber cuts your risk of colon cancer.

Cancer Fighter #3: Spinach
So, you’re whipping up an omelet and wondering what to put inside. How about adding some spinach? It’s loaded with folate, a B-vitamin that helps your cells repair DNA damage that could otherwise lead to cancer.

Spinach can be used fresh, steamed, or sautéed. If you prefer, try kale, collards, or broccoli. They have folate, too, and they also boost your liver’s ability to remove cancer-causing toxins from your body.

Just two servings a week will help – but green vegetables are so healthful, I’d suggest having them every day.

Ready to go an extra step? Since the omelet itself has a fair amount of cholesterol and none of the cancer-fighting fiber you need, try replacing it with scrambled tofu. It is almost identical to egg whites, readily taking on the flavors of spices and sauces. My favorite breakfast scrambler recipe is made with spinach and potatoes, with a bit of ground turmeric.

Click here for a complete Cancer-Fighting Breakfast Scramble recipe. You can modify it to include spinach and potatoes, tomato and basil, or curry, peas and cilantro.

Cancer Fighter #4: Super Anti-Cancer Breakfast Smoothie
There’s nothing faster than a morning smoothie and, with the right ingredients, it can be a cancer-fighter, too. Just pop frozen blueberries into your blender with a ripe banana and a cup of almond milk or soymilk. Blend it slowly at first, and then turn it up as the ingredients start to blend. It’s delicious, and great for you!

The rich color of blueberries comes from anthocyanins, natural antioxidants that neutralize free radicals. Blueberries also help prevent urinary tract infections, just as their cousins, cranberries, do.

For variety, try adding mango or kale to your smoothie. These foods have cancer-fighters of their own.

A Healthy Bonus

In addition to their cancer-preventing properties, papaya, spinach and blueberries all have fiber. That’s important because fiber satisfies your appetite with essentially no extra calories, protecting you from overeating and helping trim your waistline. The pay off goes beyond what you see in the mirror. Trimming away extra weight reduces your risk of breast and other cancers.

People who eat breakfast daily are 80% less likely to become obese, compared with people who skip breakfast. If you miss breakfast, you’ll tend to overcompensate later in the day, taking in more calories than you would have if you had started your day with a healthy breakfast.

If you’re feeling a bit unsure about papaya, sesame seeds, spinach, or any other healthy addition to your menu – or if you’re reluctant to take time for breakfast – just try it for 3 weeks. Chances are you’ll get hooked on health.

Dr. Oz's 48-Hour Weekend Cleanse

Wellness

Are you ready for the ultimate detox solution? Dr. Oz’s 48-Hour Weekend Cleanse will revitalize you from the inside out.

Added to Articles on Thu 10/06/2011
The practice of detoxifying the body to rid it of unhealthy toxins has been around for centuries. Hippocrates recommended fasting to improve health, and many religious groups have historically used fasting as a way of purifying the spirit.

Today the marketplace is cluttered with detox diets that promise to help you lose weight, boost your energy levels and more. However, many popular detox diets, especially those that involve extreme low-calorie fasting, can rob the body of important nutrients and place the body in starvation mode, which actually slows your metabolism. Other downsides of many detox diets include: dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, nausea and even colon damage.

The Body’s Detox System

Oftentimes people don’t realize that the body has its own extraordinary internal detoxification system. Here’s a brief look at three critical organs involved:
  • The Liver: Your first line of defense against toxins is your liver, which acts like a filter in preventing toxic substances contained in foods from passing into your blood stream.
  • The Colon: This organ has bacteria that produce both healthy and unhealthy chemicals. You want to keep your colon flowing regularly since its main role is to flush out toxic chemicals before they can do you any harm.
  • The Kidneys: Like clockwork, the kidneys are constantly filtering your blood and getting rid of toxins in the form of urine.
For a detox diet to truly work, you need to maintain these three key organs by nourishing your body with the right nutrients. Dr. Oz’s 48-Hour Weekend Cleanse is based upon eating certain “detoxifying” foods that will keep these systems running smoothly. The plan couldn’t be simpler to follow so you’re not always focused on what to eat next. You'll need to prepare and eat the following meals and snacks two days in a row. To get ready for the weekend cleanse, print out the complete cleanse shopping list and make a trip to the supermarket. Click here for the shopping list.

    Natural Prescription Alternatives

Added to Articles on Thu 06/07/2012
As anxiety, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, and sleep issues are on the rise, the number of prescriptions written to treat these problems are also sky-rocketing. In many cases, individual changes toward healthier foods and lifestyle, relaxation work, exercise and detoxification can often create healthy improvements in the body that may help a patient reduce or avoid the need for prescription medications.

We will discuss a few supplements below which can be part of a good naturopathic plan to help your body heal itself. These can allow prescription dosages to be lowered, and possibly even become unnecessary.

Please remember that it is always important and safest to talk to your prescribing doctor before stopping any medication, and to work with a naturopathic doctor or other holistic physician who is knowledgeable of using natural medicines with conventional drugs during this healing process.

Anti-Anxiety Alternative: Wu Wei Zi (Schizandra Berries)

Anti-anxiety drugs are among the most commonly prescribed drugs, with over 280 million prescriptions written annually. It has been shown that many of these are over-prescribed. In fact, research published in the April 2011 edition of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry showed about 25% of people who are given these dangerous medications do not have a proper diagnosis (1).

Other studies show that people who use anti-anxiety medication have a 36% increased mortality risk. That means persons using these drugs are almost 40% more likely to die than people who do not use them (2). While anti-anxiety medications can be lifesaving in urgent situations, in most cases, there are natural alternatives that can help while a person starts to work on the underlying causes of anxiety reactions in the body.

From a naturopathic perspective, these are life stresses (and how we process these), poor sleep, and excess caffeine and sugar intake. Naturopathic nutrient and botanical supplements that can help include GABA, magnesium, lavender preparations and tryptophan.

One favorite calming herb that we use in our clinic is an herbal tea called Wu Wei Zi. It’s a tea that’s been used in Chinese medicine for centuries. It’s made with dried Schizandra berries. In Chinese, “Wu Wei Zi" means "Five Flavored Herb" because the berry tastes sweet, sour, salty, bitter and acidic. It supports the function of the adrenal glands (the glands which release our stress hormones) and keeps them from over-stimulating (3), which can release adrenaline and cause feelings of anxiety (like palpitations, sweating, etc.).

This botanical is one of our top 10 herbs. Not only is it beneficial for anxiety, it also helps fatigue. In that calming spirit, it will boost the immune system, aid in liver function, and improve mental performance and clarity.

To take as a tea, purchase schizandra berries from your local health food store and steep them. For one serving, boil one cup water, then add one tablespoon of berries to the steeper, and drop into the boiling water. Reduce the heat to low and steep the berries for 15 minutes. To add more flavor, you can add lemon or honey, although most of our patients like the taste as it is. You can also buy prepared tea bags for about $7 a box.

Drink this tea once or twice a day and you’ll feel calm and focused. It’s so mild and gentle, you can drink this regularly.

High Blood Pressure Alternative: Rose Hips

Another group of highly prescribed drugs is high blood pressure medication. Over 144 million of these prescriptions are filled every year. High blood pressure has multiple causes. Minerals are important to relax vessels; when these are low, blood pressure can go up. Inadequate sleep, and lack of exercise and movement can also play a role.

We tell our patients to “meditate not medicate,” for the effects of stress on our bodies is a major contributing factor. When we are in a stress response, our vessels naturally tighten up.

One natural supplement that can be a helpful part of getting blood pressure down is rose hip powder. Anti-hypertension drugs, commonly known as “water pills,” act by getting rid of more water and salt through the kidneys and urine. Rose hip powder can act as a natural diuretic, which means it helps get rid of excess fluids, too. Rose hips contain bioflavonoids, which can be protective for blood vessels, have plenty of vitamin C, and can support healthy nitric oxide levels. Nitric oxide is needed in the vessels for a relaxation effect. A clinical study in obese individuals showed rose hips were able to significantly reduce blood pressure and lower cholesterol (4). Rose hips are even shown to help with osteoarthritis (5).

One good way to take rose hip powder is with some applesauce. Just add three-quarters to a full teaspoon to a serving of applesauce. We will often recommending mixing rose hip powder with other herbs like arjuna, which comes from the arjuna tree, a tree native to India. Arjuna can help dilate the blood vessels, which also helps the pressure come down and allows the heart to beat against less pressure, which keeps it healthy longer because it does not have to work as hard.

Rose hips can be taken twice daily with food. You can take it along with the arjuna bark capsule at a dose of 100 mg twice a day.

    Thyroid Disease Alternative: Bladderwrack

Thyroid disease has skyrocketed in the past few years. While no one is sure of the reason, many experts suspect stress, environmental toxins, and increased body inflammation is responsible. More than 80 million prescriptions are given out every year for thyroid disease.

One natural alternative to prescription drugs is called bladderwrack, also known as Fucus Vesiculous. Bladderwrack grows in both the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is nutrient–rich, and contains a fair amount of magnesium, potassium and micronutrients. Micronutrients are often not found in many other foods we normally eat.

One nutrient it has is iodine. Iodine is an essential nutrient for the thyroid gland. Bladderwrack has been used in traditional natural medicine to help support the thyroid for years. This is considered helpful for those that have hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid. In truth, there needs to be studies to confirm this, but anecdotal reports suggest it can be effective.

The best way to take this is in capsule form, and we suggest you take 600 mg twice a day. Have your blood checked, and look for underactive symptoms to improve (symptoms like constipation, feeling cold, dry hair, raised cholesterol, and slow thinking), as well your blood thyroid levels to normalize.

Because bladderwrack is harvested in the ocean, you want make sure you check the labels to make sure it was harvested in clean water and is contaminant-free. People who have overstimulated thyroid conditions should not take bladderwrack

    Natural Sleep Alternative: Glycine

In 2008, over 56 million sleep medications were prescribed in the US, and most experts believe the stress from worldwide economic challenges have only increased these numbers. While these pills can help us fall and stay asleep, it is known that these medications do not allow the body to fall into the deep phases of sleep that allow for the best health benefits sleep can give us. It is also well known that all of these medications have a risk of dependence and withdrawal effects, which can make them hard to stop using.

Most alarming, a large study of 30,000 people published in the February 2012 issue of the British Medical Journal found a 300% increase in death in people who took fewer than 18 sleeping pills a year (less than 2 a month). Higher doses were linked to a greater than 500% increase in death. The authors of this study concluded that these sleeping drugs “may have been associated with 320,000 to 507,000 excess deaths in the USA alone.” (6)

The stakes are high to find a sleep alternative. When working with patients, we find a good naturopathic sleep regimen includes getting to bed on time, dimming the lights and shutting down bright screens (cell phones, tablets, computers, etc..). Sometimes, certain foods like oatmeal or pumpkin seed powder can help (for more sleep foods, click here). Finally, many people need to look more into their emotions to help them process the thoughts that might be running through their heads, keeping them awake. We have excellent results in our clinic helping people sleep without drugs by working on these issues and using the right supplements.

One supplement that can help this process is the amino acid glycine. It is a calming amino acid primarily found in protein-rich foods like meat, fish, dairy and beans. It collects in the pineal gland of the brain, the master gland that produces the sleep hormone melatonin (7). Glycine helps create positive changes in the brain wave patterns that are associated with deep non-REM sleep. Studies show that it promotes a deeper and faster sleep without causing the foggy morning hangover feeling associated with most drugs and some other natural sleep aids (8).

Glycine is most commonly found in a capsule or powder form. You can take about 1500 mg nightly before bed for a good night’s sleep

    Conclusion

If you are using one of these medications, or are considering a medication, we highly suggest you talk to a naturopathic doctor to help assess food, lifestyle, stressors, environmental toxicities, and other factors that may play a role in your condition.

While medications can help in urgent situations, they often do not help fix the underlying cause of the problem. However, the proper naturopathic changes and supplemental support can help your body heal the problem naturally, instead of covering up symptoms. In most cases, you can often start with natural remedies if you are already on drugs, and then slowly decrease the use of medications as your body gets healthier. Be safe: Remember to work with your prescribing doctor first before stopping or changing any medications.
