Supplements and cancer: What can I take?

“Is it OK to take supplements during chemotherapy or radiation?”
As an integrative physician who specializes in cancer, this is the most common question I hear.
handful of supplements
It’s an important area to explore, with the potential to make a significant difference in outcome. But with all the conflicting opinions among experts, many people skirt the issue altogether.
That’s too bad, because they’re foregoing the interactions between supplements and conventional cancer treatments out of fear.
The truth is however, that the use of certain supplements before, during and after chemotherapy and/or radiation may increase efficacy, protect healthy tissues and reduce side effects.
This is the essence of integrative medicine: Combining advanced modalities in strategic ways to fight the disease while supporting a patient’s overall health. This is how we work to optimize results against cancer.
There are three time frames I work within when recommending supplements for patients undergoing chemotherapy: Before the chemo begins, during the chemo cycles and after the chemo is finished.
One of the important principles is to cycle supplements based on the time within the chemo cycle, selecting supplements that have been shown to work well with the specific chemotherapy being used. This is where an integrative oncologist becomes an important asset on the patient’s team.

Anti-inflammatory approaches

In preparation for chemotherapy (and radiation as well), there are a few important steps. One is gentle detoxification: If you have any chronic toxicity or inflammation issues, it’s important to address them beforehand, since inflammation is a fuel for cancer.
An example is dental health. Did you know there are often unrecognized infections hiding in old root canals or under fillings?  Cleaning up the mouth will reduce inflammation and infection, which has the benefit of reducing side effects, limiting cancer’s aggressiveness and supporting natural defenses.
However, avoid doing an extensive detox involving fasting or extreme methods because it can be weakening, unless there’s time to build up your strength again before starting cancer treatment.
On the other hand, a simple, nourishing detox emphasizing an unprocessed diet and gentle cleansing supplements can help strengthen the body, reduce inflammation and boost immunity in preparation. You can also use antioxidants more liberally during this time, to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.

Treatment enhancers

There are also supplements which can enhance the effects of certain chemo drugs, while providing additional benefits. Medicinal mushrooms are excellent supplements before, during and after chemotherapy. They help detoxify, support immune cells and enhance most types of chemotherapy. There are multiple mushrooms that can help, such as reishi, cordyceps, shiitake, maitake, and coriolus. I specifically recommend mushrooms grown on immune enhancing herbs which are shown to be more effective.
  • One of the most researched supplements showing promising results with many types of chemotherapy – including doxorubicin, platinum and taxol drugs – is Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP), a specialized form of pectin backed by extensive research.
MCP works in part by blocking the pro-inflammatory, pro-cancer protein in the body, galectin-3. As such, MCP inhibits one of the primary mechanisms by which the cancer can grow, metastasize and shield itself from chemo drugs.
As the only natural agent which binds and blocks galectin-3 on the surface of cancer cells (and elsewhere in the body), MCP is shown through preclinical studies to work synergistically with chemotherapy drugs like doxorubicin, gemcitabine, paclitaxel and more; it also increases natural killer (NK) and T cells, and gently detoxifies heavy metals and environmental toxins. Furthermore, since MCP blocks galectin-3, it also inhibits inflammation and fibrosis, protecting against the damaging side effects of radiation treatments. To learn more about this important, versatile anti-cancer supplement, I recommend the new book, “New Twist on Health: Modified Citrus Pectin for Cancer, Heart Disease and More” by Karolyn A. Gazella.
  • Another compound shown in pre-clinical studies to enhance many chemotherapies is honokiol, an active antioxidant and anti-inflammatory extract derived from Magnolia officinalis bark.
Honokiol fights aggressive cancers through a number of unusual mechanisms. One of its unique features is that it selectively targets cancer cells using oxidation, allowing it to work well with chemotherapies like platinum drugs, doxorubicin, etc. At the same time, it protects healthy tissues with powerful antioxidant benefits – truly unusual.
Another mechanism by which it works relates to the enzyme mTOR. The mTOR enzyme regulates important activities such as cell growth, proliferation and survival.  Cancer activates mTOR which allows the tumor cells to avoid apoptosis (cell death) and grow uncontrollably. However, honokiol inhibits mTOR, making chemotherapy more effective. Honokiol is also shown to increase radio-sensitivity in certain cancers, making tumors more vulnerable to radiation treatment.
  • Other helpful chemotherapy enhancers are melatonin, high dose intravenous (IV) vitamin C (15+ grams) and ECGC from green tea.
The drug gemcitabine is sensitive to vitamin C plus vitamin K3, so combining these ingredients can help increase effectiveness of this particular drug. With agents that enhance chemotherapy or radiation, it’s important to take them around the time of chemo so they can work together.

Support digestion and circulation

It’s very important to support the health of the GI tract, because often the digestion stops functioning and becomes paralyzed during chemotherapy. In my practice, I use a digestive formula containing enzymes, zinc, ginger, cardamom and other supportive ingredients. Probiotics are also very important, as some chemotherapy (like Cyclophosphamide) requires healthy bacterial balance to metabolize into active components. Take probiotics throughout treatment and afterwards as well.
During the first phase of the chemotherapy cycle, circulation support is critical to ensure that the drugs are reaching their target. The enzymes nattokinase and lumbrokinase along with medicinal mushrooms, Chinese salvia and hawthorn berry are helpful.
About a week after the chemotherapy cycle, once most or all of the drug has had a chance to complete its cycle, we want to support liver detoxification. Milk thistle, liver support formulas, and curcumin help the liver detoxify the byproducts of the cancer.

Beyond chemotherapy treatment

Once chemotherapy is completed, start addressing the mechanisms of the cancer that may have survived. For example, in hormone sensitive cancers, hormonal modulation becomes important, helping the body to metabolize and excrete its steroid sex hormones, with the use of supplements such as DIM (Diindolylmethane), cruciferous vegetable extracts and others.
I will also start supporting vital organs, mitochondrial function and immunity to help nourish and rebuild the body. This is where certain Chinese formulas, medicinal mushrooms, as well as nutrients such as L-carnitine and CoQ10 can be very helpful.

The strategy of synergy

These recommendations are examples of integrative adjuncts which may help certain cancer treatments work more effectively.
It’s important to remember that successful integrative anti-cancer protocols require an individualized strategy that takes into account numerous variables, such as the person’s overall health and lifestyle, the cancer’s origin and genetic make-up; sensitivity to certain drugs, and other factors.
Cancer is notorious for its ability to evade treatment, so it demands an ongoing, responsive strategy where we stay ahead of the disease. There are many unanswered questions, ongoing research and continual refinements in our knowledge regarding use of nutrients and botanicals during conventional treatment.  I don’t recommend a do-it-yourself approach .Working with an integrative health practitioner experienced in this area is one of the most important investments you can make.
These practitioners belong to fast-growing field of medicine and research called integrative oncology, leading the way in developing more effective, patient-centered anticancer protocols available to all.

5 life-extending benefits of resveratrol

The most familiar connection to red wine is the “French Paradox.” Researchers have discovered that in regions of France where the population enjoys a high-fat diet but consumes a lot of red wine with meals, the incidence of heart attacks is considerably lower than in other parts of the world.
They now believe that the benefits of red wine — that is the resveratrol found in the red wine — extends to brain health, cancer protection and longevity, in addition to being cardio-protective.
We can get the resveratrol compound from several foods, with grapes and wine being the most abundant sources. But resveratrol can also be found in seeds as well as skin and fruit of vaccinium berries such as bilberries, raspberries, blueberries and cranberries.
Here are 5 benefits of resveratrol that can help you lead a longer, healthier life:

1. It protects your heart

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is the silent killer. It is the most common form of cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States.
But cardiovascular disease is preventable and, in many cases, reversible — and diet plays an important role.
The most important use of resveratrol is related to the protection of the blood vessels and heart, which lies in its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and blood flow properties.
Resveratrol helps prevent damage to blood vessels, reduces “bad” cholesterol and prevents blood clots. For example, according to a study from the European Journal of Pharmacology, resveratrol helps protect you from atherosclerosis, or plaque build up in the arteries.

2. It helps you look younger

In an effort to look our best, we spend a fortune on facial creams, special soaps and other treatments designed to improve our appearance. But one of the most effective ways to look younger, researchers say, is to eat the foods that support the health of your skin.
A study at Newcastle University in England demonstrates that nutrients in certain foods can help facial skin cells help fight aging. The most potent of these natural chemicals are antioxidants that support mitochondria (cellular structures that produce energy) such as resveratrol found in red wine.
It may also slow the growth of the bacteria that lead to skin blemishes.

3. It prevents or inhibits some cancers

You may already know that calorie restriction turns on a certain set of genes called “sirtuins” that help you live linger.
Those same sirtuins can also help you survive – and protect you against – breast cancer.
Resveratrol is the compound that turns on sirtuins. So if you want to give yourself an epigenetic advantage against cancer, it might be a wise idea to add red huckleberries, cranberries, lingonberries and blueberries to your diet.
Several studies have also noted that resveratrol makes tumor cells more susceptible to chemotherapy and radiation treatment, increasing the chances of a full recovery from all types of cancer, including aggressive tumors.

4. It protects the brain

Inflammation is a major problem for people with Alzheimer’s. In fact, it’s what causes the brain damage that leads to the life-altering memory loss, confusion and personality changes that make the disease so scary.
But the good news is, if you know a disease is caused primarily by inflammation, it’s easier to figure out a solution.
And, unsurprisingly, the most promising solution for Alzheimer’s may be a potent anti-inflammatory compound… one that’s been revered for its health-giving properties for over a decade now… resveratrol.
So raise a glass of wine when you next dine on a delicious dinner from the brain-healthy list of foods (below), toast your good health, good fortune and youthful brain — and enjoy a modest serving of dessert if you want.

5. It boosts insulin sensitivity

There’s a nutrient that you already know has tremendous benefits for your heart and brain. It’s even anti-aging, but can also increase insulin sensitivity (improve insulin function) and lower blood sugar — naturally. It’s resveratrol.
In one study, 19 men with type 2 diabetes took a placebo or 5 mg of resveratrol (the antioxidant polyphenol) twice per day. Researchers asked the men not to eat foods with high amounts of resveratrol, such as red wine and grapes, peanuts and berries.
After four weeks, while the placebo group had not improved, men who had taken resveratrol had far fewer signs of oxidative stress, and much higher levels of a protein that helps cells absorb and use glucose. Doctors said this is the first study in humans to show that resveratrol improves insulin sensitivity.

How much is enough?

With supplementation of a nutrient, it’s important to know how much and what to take.
First thing to remember with resveratrol is that there are three, not two forms. There’s trans, cis and dihydro-resveratrol. All have health-enhancing properties, but the most studied and powerful for insulin function is the trans form.
Inexpensive resveratrol supplements will be in the cis-form. Even trans-resveratrol will turn into cis if stored improperly. This is why high-quality trans-resveratrol supplements cost a bit more.
Second, you want to take a high enough dose that it will have a positive effect on your whole body. That means not falling for the cheap 500 mg “resveratrol” pills and instead opting for at least 40 mg of pure trans-resveratrol each day.

4 drugs that can give you dementia

If it’s not shocking enough that dementia kills more people than breast and prostate cancer combined, how about this… You may be taking a common medication right now that increases your risk of developing dementia by as much as 54 percent!

Prescription pills

Jedha Dening

You may be taking a common medication right now that increases your risk of developing dementia by as much as 54 percent!
To date, a few studies have raised a number of medications into the dementia-causing spotlight. You may want to take this list and have a look in your medicine cabinet…

Oxybutynin (Ditropan XL, Urotrol) for bladder control

In the past five years, these bladder antimuscarinic drugs, prescribed for the treatment of urinary incontinence, have increased in usage by 31 percent. Researchers suggest there are other options but physicians turn to this drug because it’s a cheaper option. And it seems, at your expense…
Researchers discovered that those taking it for more than three years had a significantly increased risk of dementia.
What can you do for bladder control instead?
I’ve previously covered the use of pumpkin seed extract and Kegel exercises for bladder issues, two natural options with proven effectiveness.

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) for allergies and colds

Reaching for those antihistamines to address your seasonal allergies — sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, skin rash, itching, and other cold symptoms — may have seemed like a good idea before now. However, this commonly used medication is in the same class as all those listed here and may increase your dementia risk.
Next time you suffer allergies try these 7 foods and optimize your health with these tipsfrom my colleague Dr. Isaac Eliaz.

Tricyclic antidepressants

Some popular medications in this group include:
  • Amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep)
  • Clomipramine (Anafranil)
  • Imipramine (Tofranil)
  • Trimipramine (Surmontil)
  • Doxepin (Sinequan, Adapin)
Taking antidepressants may be useful for those with severe clinical depression. However, there are other alternatives to tricyclic antidepressants. And since these have been shown to increase risk of dementia, discussing alternatives with your physician is a great idea.
Since antidepressants are not all that useful to most people, consider trying proven alternatives. My colleague Dr. Mark Wiley has previously covered several natural methods for treating depression.

Doxepin hydrochloride (Silenor) for insomnia

If you have trouble staying asleep, your physician may prescribe you doxepin hydrochloride. But if you’re a regular user of a dosage around 10 mg per day and continue to do that for three years, your risk of dementia can skyrocket.
All of these medications are classed in the category of ‘anticholinergic’ medications and have an average usage between 8 to 37 percent. It’s not unknown that these meds cause immediate cognitive effects such as altered attention, changes to working memory, and slower cognitive speed. But when following your physician’s advice, you probably don’t expect to up your risk of dementia by more than 50 percent.
Unfortunately there are too many drugs to list here… but you can learn about other prescriptions for amnesia and brain robbery that my colleague Margaret Cantwell wrote about, including Xanax and Lipitor to name a few.
Editor’s note: There’s one more drug that could be stealthily stealing your mind and your memories… and the reason you take it is based on a myth that has helped big pharma rake in billions! To learn more about how mainstream medicine is robbing you of a vitally important brain nutrient, click here to read this urgent report!

The green goo diabetes cure you can drink

If you’ve ever had a bad case of sunburn, you probably have a bottle of aloe vera gel in your medicine chest. And if you don’t, you should… because it has an amazing ability to heal wounds, burns and pretty much any other skin ailment under the sun.

Aloe Vera

Jenny Smiechowski

But the health benefits of this sunburn soother are more than skin deep. Aloe vera can heal your internal tissues just as effectively as it heals your external tissues. That’s why health nuts in the know take aloe vera orally.
A daily swig of aloe vera juice can do everything from cure bad breath to heal your stomach ulcers. It’s reported to even prevent cancer. And now researchers are adding one more health condition to the long list of ailments relieved by aloe vera…
A recent research analysis published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that aloe vera can potentially help cure one of the most widespread health epidemics of our time — diabetes.
After examining study after study, researchers determined that aloe vera significantly lowers the fasting blood sugar level of people with prediabetes and diabetes.
It also lowers hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) — an indicator used to gauge your average blood sugar.
Researchers believe aloe vera has the most benefit for people with a fasting blood sugar level that’s less than 200 mg/dL.
Just for a point of reference, a normal fasting blood sugar level is less than 100mg/dL. A blood sugar between 100 and 125 mg/dL is considered prediabetes. And anything higher than 125 mg/dL is considered diagnosable diabetes territory.
So if you have moderate diabetes or prediabetes, a few sips of aloe vera could very well be the silver bullet solution you’ve been looking for. But if you’re going to start using aloe vera for more than just sunburn there are a few things you should know…
First, make sure you only drink aloe vera that was created for internal use. Your best bet is to buy a bottle of aloe vera juice… which shouldn’t be a problem since it’s available at most (if not all) grocery stores and online.
And when you buy your aloe vera juice, read the label. Like a lot of natural health tonics, manufacturers of aloe vera juice sometimes dilute the good stuff down with filler fruit juices that add a lot of sugar and reduce the health benefits. Some aloe vera juices even have sugar added to them. So pay attention to what you buy if you don’t want to get too much of the sweet stuff and totally defeat the purpose.
Your best bet is to buy pure, unfiltered aloe vera juice and drink two to four ounces per day with meals. If you do, you’ll be amazed at how much it helps your body from head to toe, whether you have diabetes or not.
Editor’s Note: In his book, The Insulin Factor, Dr. Michael Cutler reveals compelling facts on how insulin, your master hormone, plays such a critical role in your overall health — including chronic conditions your doctor won’t even discuss with you outside of diabetes. To learn more about the far-reaching affects of insulin… how to use it to disease-proof your body… and how groups of centenarians all over the world are thriving because of it… click here!

The right food for real rheumatoid arthritis relief

Rheumatoid arthritis is serious and usually gets worse over time. It can even lead to severe disability in cases where joints become so swollen and disfigured that you’re unable to use them. But diet can help, and there’s one particular food that protects your joints best from this devastating disease…

Rheumatoid arthritis

Jenny Smiechowski

Rheumatoid arthritis isn’t your run-of-the-mill arthritis…
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that can strike at any age.
It happens when your immune system goes haywire and attacks your body, more specifically your joints. People with rheumatoid arthritis experience joint stiffness, swelling and pain. But they also experience a range of other symptoms like fever, extreme fatigue, muscle aches and lumps under the skin near the affected joints.
Like most autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis is serious and usually gets worse over time. It can even lead to severe disability in cases where joints become so swollen and disfigured that you’re unable to use them.
But diet can help improve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms immensely. In fact, there’s one particular food that protects your joints best from this devastating disease…

Fishing for rheumatoid arthritis help

Ask anyone who has rheumatoid arthritis whether they’d eat a certain food a few times per week to drastically reduce their RA symptoms, and you’ll get a resounding, “Yes!” That’s why there’s something rheumatoid arthritis sufferers everywhere need to know…
That question is more than just hypothetical. There’s actually a food that can do just that… fish.
In fact, researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that RA sufferers who ate more fish had less joint problems. More specifically, two or more servings of fish per week reduced the amount and severity of tender and swollen joints, along with other RA symptoms.
Even more exciting, symptoms improved more with each additional serving of fish per week. So the more fish you eat, the less RA symptoms you have… at least according to this study.
“Fish consumption has been noted to have many beneficial health effects, and our findings may give patients with rheumatoid arthritis a strong reason to increase fish consumption,” said Dr. Sara Tedeschi, lead author of the study.
So if you’re struggling to get your RA under control, this could be the RA relief you’ve been praying for. In fact, researchers say eating fish just twice per week is about one-third as effective as the drugs used to treat the disease.

Finding relief from fish

If you’re ready to see how fish affects your RA symptoms, start turning to seafood for your protein at least two times per week.
But steer clear of fish that contains a lot of mercury like Bluefin tuna, farmed Atlantic salmon, mahi-mahi and halibut. Eating these fish too often might counteract the health benefits. Some of the healthiest fish you can put on your plate include:
  • Wild-caught Alaskan salmon
  • Wild-caught Pacific sardines
  • Farmed rainbow trout
  • Arctic char
  • Atlantic mackerel
If you’re not a fan of fish, you could also turn to supplements for similar benefits. Krill oil is arguably the healthiest fish oil supplement you can take because it’s high in omega-3s, contains a powerful antioxidant called astaxanthin and is low in pollutants.
But nothing’s quite as good as the real thing, so do your best to add more fresh fish to your diet if you can. For more tips on choosing the healthiest seafood, check out the Environmental Working Group’s Consumer Guide to Seafood.

Detoxifying foods that defeat cancer

If you want to prevent cancer, you need to do one thing above all else: detoxify. Because let’s face it, you’re confronted by carcinogens around every corner — in your furniture, clothing, food, air, water — and your body needs help getting rid of them.

Fruits and vegetables at the supermarket

Jenny Smiechowski

Luckily, there are plenty of safe, natural ways to send these harmful toxins packing. You can try fasting, colonics or other popular detox methods… but some of these are a bit on the extreme (and expensive) side.
Or you can keep your detoxification regimen really simple and follow one easy piece of advice: Eat a lot of cruciferous vegetables.
The latest research shows that a compound in cruciferous vegetables known as sulforaphane can actually activate your body’s “detoxification” gene and help your body get rid of the toxins that lead to cancer.
Now there are certain plant compounds that have been proven time and time again to prevent cancer, and sulforaphane is one of them. Previously, sulforaphane has been shown to selectively kill cancer cells, so its ability to alter your genes in a way that promotes detoxification is just an added bonus.
These two abilities combined make sulforaphane a super potent cancer-fighter—a fact which isn’t lost on researchers. Recently, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh decided to study whether sulforaphane could keep survivors of head and neck cancer from relapsing. And the results are promising.
“With head and neck cancer, we often clear patients of cancer only to see it come back with deadly consequences a few years later,” said lead author of the study Julie Bauman, M.D., M.P.H., co-director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Head and Neck Cancer Center of Excellence. “Unfortunately, previous efforts to develop a preventative drug to reduce this risk have been inefficient, intolerable in patients and expensive. That led us to ‘green chemoprevention’–the cost-effective development of treatments based upon whole plants or their extracts.”
Now Bauman has studied the anti-cancer effects of sulforaphane in human cells, human beings and mice, and here’s what she’s found so far:
  • Sulforaphane activates the genes responsible for detoxifying carcinogens in both healthy and cancerous human throat and mouth cells.
  • Healthy people who swished juice containing sulforaphane around in their mouths also effectively triggered these cancer detoxification genes in their mouth cells.
  • Mice prone to head and neck cancer who were given sulforaphane had less tumors than mice who weren’t given sulforaphane.
In case you don’t already know, sulforaphane can be found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy and Brussel sprouts, among others. So your mom was right when she told you to eat your broccoli—her advice may have even helped you prevent cancer up until this point.
In Baumann’s study, she and fellow researchers gave participants high doses of broccoli sprout extract because broccoli sprouts are actually the most potent sources of sulforaphane. In other words, broccoli (and its sprouts) should be the first of the cruciferous vegetables you turn to in your cancer prevention efforts.
If you’re really serious about getting your daily dose of sulforaphane, you can grow your own broccoli sprouts at home—all you need are a mason jar, a sprouting lid, broccoli seeds and water. Check out this video tutorial here to get started. Once you start growing your own sprouts, you can add a handful to every meal and you should be good to go.
But there are also sulforaphane supplements on the market, if you’d rather go that route. Recommended dosages range anywhere between 400 mcg and 60 mg daily. Of course getting your sulforaphane (and other nutrients) from whole food sources is always the healthiest option.
