Lower the risk of cancer — Soursop’s apparent ability to fight cancer is a major factor in its popularity. Boost liver health — A mice study published in 2012 notes that soursop leaf extracts have bilirubin-lowering potential in jaundiced rats.34 Bilirubin is a yellow-orange substance produced by the liver as it breaks down red blood cells, which is excreted out of the body. If it is not expelled, it can cause jaundice.35
Manage mental health — Soursop leaf extracts may help lower stress, as shown in a rat study published in the Journal of Natural Remedies. Researchers found that soursop can inhibit the production of neurotransmitter stressors in the central nervous system.36 A different study notes that soursop may help manage depression as well.37
Improve wound healing — Topical application of soursop leaves may help accelerate wound healing, as noted in a rat study in the International Journal of Surgery (London, England).38

Soursop Tea Recipe
Ingredients:
1 liter filtered water
15 soursop leaves, dried or fresh
1 soursop stem, cut into small pieces
1/2 teaspoon lime juice (optional)
mint leaves (optional)
A dab of raw honey (optional)
Procedure:
1.Boil the water in a pot, and place the leaves and stem in the pot.
2.Once the ingredients are placed in the pot, turn the heat to low and continue to boil for 30 minutes or until the water evaporates by half the amount.
3.Filter the tea and place in a teapot. You can drink up to 3 cups a day.
4.You can add either mint, lime or honey to help improve the taste.
Note: The Times Caribbean recommends drinking soursop tea 30 minutes before eating.

Soursop Tea Side Effects and Contraindications

While soursop tea may benefit your health in many ways, there are some caveats you should be aware of. The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center advises you to  the avoid soursop if you:43
Are taking blood pressure and diabetic medications — Soursop may increase the effects of these drugs.
Have liver or kidney disease — Repeated consumption of soursop may increase liver and kidney toxicity.
Undergoing nuclear imaging — Soursop may reduce tissue uptake of radiopharmaceuticals for people taking this test.
Have a low blood platelet count — Soursop may reduce platelet count further.
In addition, soursop may cause movement disorders and myeloneuropathy, which may imitate the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.44 Examples include limb tremors, rigid muscles, loss of automatic movements and speech changes.45

Don’t Rely on Soursop Tea to Lower Your Cancer Risk

While the studies regarding soursop sound promising, it’s not wise to rely on it as your sole method for lowering your risk of cancer. The majority of the studies published were conducted on animals in a laboratory setting, necessitating more studies on humans to ascertain the true potential of this remedy.46
Don’t take this to mean that you should simply disregard soursop entirely; you can still add it to your regular diet to help boost your antioxidant profile and help support your overall well-being.

Anal cancer is a type of cancer that begins at the opening of the rectum (also known as anus). This unusual form of cancer is overlooked by almost everyone due to the location of the affected area. Most people who have experienced the symptoms of anal cancer do not discuss it with neither their doctor nor the people they know due to embarrassment.
The odds that anal cancer can be found early depend on the location and type of the cancer. Cancers that begin higher up in the anal canal are less likely to cause symptoms and be found early. Anal melanomas tend to spread earlier than other cancers, making it harder to diagnose them early.
Anal cancer should not be confused with colorectal cancer. Whereas colorectal cancer affects the whole large intestine and the rectum, the anal cancer affects only the beginning of the rectum.
Each year, more than 8,000 Americans are diagnosed with anal cancer. It is expected that 1,000 of them will die from it. Statistically, one of every four people who suffer from anal cancer has been diagnosed after the disease has spread to lymph nodes, and one of every ten people has been diagnosed after it has spread to other organs.
Although the cases of anal cancer are not as frequent like the other types of cancer such as colon, rectal, or colorectal cancer, the number of people who suffer from it has grown rapidly in the last decade.
The Symptoms of Anal Cancer!
It is very difficult to detect the presence of anal cancer in its earliest stages because most symptoms are not present during that time. However, as cancer progresses, it usually causes many different symptoms such as:

  2. Rectal itching
  3. A lump or mass at the anal opening
  4. Pain or a feeling of fullness in the anal area

Men under 35 are at higher risk to develop this uncommon disease when compared women who belong to the same age category. However, after the age of 50, women are at higher risk of developing anal cancer.
How to Detect Anal Cancer Early?
Detecting anal cancer during its early stages is decisive in overcoming it. There are many procedures that can detect the presence of anal cancer. Here are some of them:
  • Digital Rectal Exam – The doctor first looks at the outside of the anus to find out whether you have hemorrhoids or fissures. Then, he puts on a latex glove and inserts a lubricated finger into the rectum to search for lumps or any other abnormalities.
  • Anoscopy – This is a method when a small, tubular instrument called an anoscope is inserted a few inches into the anus so the doctor can determine whether you have anal fissures, anal polyps, hemorrhoids, infection, or tumors. The doctor will perform this procedure only if he finds something abnormal during the digital rectal exam.
  • Biopsies, ultrasounds, x-rays, CT scans, MRIs and PET scans – are all procedures that can be used to detect the presence of anal cancer. However, all of these procedures are surrounded by controversies as a result of many studies which suggest that they either spread or cause cancer.

Burgess had been noticing blood in her stool for several years, but she shrugged it off after consulting “Dr Google” and self-diagnosing haemorrhoids.

By the time she went to the doctor to have a colonoscopy, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer.
“It wasn’t great, but they gave me a lot of treatment options,” said Burgess of Kansas City, Montana, US.
Six months later, she was cancer-free. Doctors continued to monitor her colon (large intestine) every three years.
In 2009, when she was 25, a growth on her colon once again tested positive for cancer.
“Luckily, they caught it early,” said Burgess, now 32.
Colorectal cancer, a malignancy that occurs in the colon or rectum, is a leading cause of cancer deaths. This year, it’s expected to claim the lives of nearly 50,000 people in the US.
It’s also largely preventable.
Screening tests can detect and remove abnormalities before they have a chance to turn cancerous – or spot problems in the early stages, when the disease is more responsive to treatment.
The American Cancer Society and other groups say that screening for most men and women should begin at age 50.
Even so, many choose to ignore this advice. Roughly one-third of the country’s eligible adults haven’t been screened for colorectal cancer as recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC estimates that if everyone age 50 and up had regular testing, at least 60% of deaths from this cancer could be avoided.
“In nearly every case, colon cancer begins with a small growth called a polyp, which over time turns into a large polyp, and eventually turns into cancer,” said Dr David Greenwald, director of clinical gastroenterology and endoscopy at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
“This process takes many years to occur; if polyps are removed when they are small, or even when they are big, but before they turn into cancer, colon cancer is prevented.”
If found in its earliest stages and if the cancer hasn’t spread, the survival rate beyond five years is 90%, said Durado Brooks, managing director of cancer control intervention for the American Cancer Society. If it has already spread, the survival rate drops to 12% beyond five years.
“Our treatments are much, much more effective at the early stage,” Brooks said.
There are numerous ways to screen for colorectal cancer, and several organisations have issued their own guidelines.
The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening using high-sensitivity faecal occult blood testing (FOBT), sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy beginning at age 50 and continuing until age 75, at which point the decision to continue screening should be made on an individual basis depending on the person’s overall health and screening history.
The tests the task force recommends:
High-sensitivity FOBT or faecal immunochemical test (FIT) to detect blood in the stool, a possible sign of cancer. People get a kit and collect small samples of stool that are sent to a lab. This test should be done annually.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy, where doctors use a thin, flexible, lighted tube called a sigmoidoscope to examine the interior walls of the rectum and the lower third of the colon. Should be done every five years in conjunction with FOBT/FIT every three years.
• Colonoscopy, similar to a sigmoidoscopy, but uses a longer colonoscope tube to look at the inside walls of the rectum and the entire colon. Should be done every 10 years. During the procedure, tissue samples may be collected for further testing or polyps may be removed.
Colonoscopies are often performed as a follow-up if abnormalities are picked up by other screening methods.
Doctors say they’ve heard a plethora of excuses from patients who’ve put off screening.
“Some excuses for not undergoing screening, include a fear of being diagnosed with cancer,” said Dr Andrew Chan, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
“Other patients do not want to undergo endoscopic screening tests because they are afraid of pain or discomfort. For these patients, I explain that the vast majority of patients do not experience discomfort since they are given sedatives and pain medicines during the procedures.”
 


The American Cancer Society’s recommendations include additional screening options, such as an X-ray of the colon and rectum called a double-contrast barium enema, and a CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy), where X-rays and computers create images of the entire colon.
Both require that the colon is completely empty before testing, so patients need to do a colon-cleansing prep, same as they would with a standard colonoscopy.
The society also recommends a stool DNA test every three years that entails sending a bowel movement to a lab to be checked for cancer cells.
“They (stool tests) may not be as sensitive as colonoscopy, and some patients also worry about having to manipulate faecal matter,” Dr Chan said. “However, any screening is better than no screening exam.”
While most adults can wait until 50 to start routine screening, tests should begin earlier and be done more frequently for those at higher risk, such as people with inflammatory bowel disease or a strong family history of colorectal cancer or polyps.
People also need to be vigilant about symptoms – no matter what their age.
Just before Susan Cohan’s 40th birthday in 2002, she experienced stomach pain and rectal bleeding. She saw several doctors who prescribed laxatives rather than referring her to a gastroenterologist.
Cohan ended up in the emergency room in incredible pain. She was diagnosed with advanced stage colon cancer and told she had a couple of months to live, said her father, David Cohan, president of the Baltimore-based Susan Cohan Colon Cancer Foundation.
“Susan died two years later after a heroic battle,” her father said. “We urge anyone, regardless of age, with symptoms such as abdominal pain, bleeding or continuous constipation to get screened for colon cancer.” – Chicago Tribune/Tribune News Service
