Essiac Tea

Nurse Rene Caisse
Nurse Rene Caisse

The Story of Rene Caisse And Her Herbal Remedy
I will preface this article by stating that I have not used Essiac tea personally, but I do know of a few people who have used it and loved the benefits they felt from it.  They weren’t trying to cure cancer, but did have other health complaints which appeared to be alleviated by drinking the tea.  I am sharing this with you because it is such an interesting story and I believe, from what I do know about it, that Essiac tea could be a very powerful natural remedy.
In 1922 Rene Caisse, a Canadian surgical nurse working in a Haileybury, Ontario hospital, had a chance encounter with a prospector’s wife who had survived breast cancer some 30 years earlier.  This woman told Nurse Caisse of an Indian friend from the Ojibwa tribe who had offered to help her heal a breast tumor with herbal medicine.  This woman and her husband then went to a doctor who confirmed the diagnosis of advanced cancer and told her the breast would have to be surgically removed.  She opted instead to take her chances with the Indian medicine man, and the woman returned to his mining camp and drank the recommended brew daily.  Her tumors gradually shrank and then disappeared and when Caisse stumbled across her, she was still cancer free.
Nurse Caisse decided that if she were to ever have cancer, she would try the remedy herself.   She got her chance shortly thereafter in 1924 when her aunt was diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer.  Remembering the Ojibwa brew, Nurse Caisse asked her aunt’s physician, Dr R O Fisher, for permission to try it on her dying relative.  Dr Fisher consented, and Nurse Caisse gathered the herbs to brew the tea.  After drinking the herbal concoction daily for two months, Caisse’s aunt got well and went on to live another 21 years.
Soon Nurse Caisse and Dr Fisher teamed up to treat cancer patients who had been written off by their doctors as terminal.  Many of these patients, too, showed dramatic improvement.
The formula consisted of just four common herbs: sheep sorrel, burdock root, slippery elm bark, and turkey rhubarb root. Burdock, incidentally, is a key active ingredient in Hoxsey herbal remedy, another well-known natural herbal remedy.
The Herbal Remedy Gets A Name
Nurse Caisse named the herbal remedy Essiac, her own named spelled backwards.  She continued helping these patients no one else could help.  She treated hundreds of patients from her home, not charging for her services or for the Essiac remedy, she lived mainly by donations which were her only income and they barely kept her above the poverty line.
She noticed that she wasn’t able to save everyone, that the herbs could not undo severe damage to organs like heart and lung and liver, but she did notice that the pain of their illness was definitely eased, and the patient often lived longer than predicted.  In most other cases, however, where life support organs had not been severely damaged, the cure was complete and patients often lived another 35-40 years.
When, over many years, word of her good work began to spread, the Canadian medical establishment did not like it one bit.  Thus began many years of harassment and persecution by the Canadian Ministry of Health and Welfare and she spent many years defending herself from this persecution.  Canadian newspapers documented Caisse’s struggle and this, along with the testimonials by some of the patients she had treated, had the effect of making her famous throughout Canada.
Essiac Legalization Fails By 3 Votes
Eventually the Royal Cancer Commission became interested in Rene Caisse and her work.  They decided to study Essiac and in 1937 the Royal Cancer Commission conducted hearings on Essiac.   Many testimonials came in from Caisse’s cured patients that Essiac was a cure for cancer and in 1938 the Canadian Parliament voted on legislation that would, if adopted, legalize the use of Essiac.  A petition containing 55,000 signatures was presented to the parliament and the vote was close, but Essiac failed by 3 votes to be approved as an officially sanctioned treatment for cancer.
Essiac Garners Respect
In the 1960’s, Nurse Caisse worked with a well-known clinic in Massachusetts, the Brusch Clinic.  Dr Charles A Brusch was the personal physician for President John F Kennedy, and Dr Brusch apparently cured his own bowel cancer using Essiac alone.  After researching the herbal remedy for 10 years, Dr Brusch stated: “Essiac is a cure for cancer, period.  All studies done at laboratories in the United States and Canada support this conclusion.
Rene Caisse continued her work for 40 years, until her death in 1978.  You can read all about her story in the book titled The Calling of an Angel by Dr Gary L Glum. It is a fascinating story.
The Benefits of Essiac
From the studying I have done on it, Essiac appears to have many benefits, but the main ones include:
1.  Preventing build-up of fatty deposits in arterial walls, heart, kidney and liver
2.  Regulation of cholesterol levels by transforming sugar and fat into energy
3.  Destroying parasites in the digestive system and throughout the body
4.  Counteracting the effects of aluminum, lead and mercury poisoning
5.  Nourishing and stimulating the brain and nervous system
6.  Promoting the absorption of fluids in the tissues
7.  Removing toxic accumulations in the fat, lymph, bone marrow, bladder, and gut
8.  Neutralizing acids, absorbing toxins in the bowel and eliminating both
9.  Clearing the respiratory passages by dissolving and expelling mucus
10.  Helping the liver detoxify by helping to convert fatty toxins into water-soluble substances that can then be eliminated through the kidneys
11.  Increasing the body’s ability to utilize oxygen by raising oxygen level in cells
12.  Increasing the production of antibodies like lymphocytes and T-cells in the thymus gland, helping the immune system
13. Inhibiting and possibly destroying benign growths and tumors
14.  Purifies the blood
Sounds incredible that four simple herbs could do so much in the body.  Herbalists believe that the synergistic interaction of the four herbs contributes to their therapeutic effects.  Some research has been carried out on the individual components of the remedy and these studies indicate that both burdock and the turkey rhubarb root have anti-tumor properties.  But it appears to be the combination of the herbs that has the best effect.
Of course the medical establishment continues to diss Essiac, saying that there is “a lack of high-quality clinical trials to substantiate any of Essiac’s traditional uses”.  But since herbs can’t be patented who would pay for such a trial?   I even found on the Cancer Research UK website the remark: “…in many cases, it turned out that either the diagnosis was wrong in the first place, or that conventional cancer treatment was more likely to have been the reason for the cancer disappearing.”  Yeah, right.
Essiac is now apparently owned by a commercial company and their lawyers require the statement “Essiac is the registered trademark of Essiac Products Inc” whenever it is written about.  One thing I have learned over the years is that the original formula has been altered by subsequent makers of it, sometimes due to inabilities to get the original ingredients, sometimes due to their own research which indicated the substitution was for the better.  If you should decide to give this herbal remedy a try, just ensure that the maker of it knows what they are doing and is adhering to the original recipe as closely as they can.
From the research I have done, this appears to be the original recipe:
RENE CAISSE’S HERBAL BREW
  • 13 (measuring cup) oz burdock root (Arctium lappa), cut into small pieces;
  • 4 oz (scale weight) powdered sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella) herb;
  • 1 oz (scale weight) powdered slippery elm (Ulmus fulva) inner bark;
  • 1/4 oz (scale weight) Indian or Turkey rhubarb root (Rheum officinale, Rheum palmatum).
Mix thoroughly the dry ingredients in a bowl, then pour the dry mixture into a wide-mouth glass jar and shake it well.  Mix 1-1/2 quarts of distilled water to every ounce of the dry mixture and boil it up in a stainless steel, lidded pot. After boiling hard for 10 minutes, turn off the heat, scrape down the sides of the pot, and stir well. The pot then sits for 10-12 hours. To preserve the supply, you must sterilize the implements and reheat the liquid until it is steaming hot, but not boiling.  Strain the mixture and put it in sterilized bottles. Tighten the cap of the bottle and then set aside to cool.  Once the bottles are opened, they should be refrigerated, but not frozen.
According to Ralph Moss, it is “important to question the source and authenticity of the herbs. For example, there are over 100 species of “sorrel” but it is important to make sure one is getting real sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella), and not some substitute, such as ordinary garden sorrel (Rumex acetosa).”
To take Essiac, one should:
  • Shake the bottle gently to mix any settled sediment.
  • Take 1 oz of the decoction in 2 oz of hot water on an empty stomach, 2 to 3 hours after dinner each night.
  • Refrain from food or drink for 1 hour after taking it.
  • Allow at least 3 hrs to elapse between using Essiac and any prescription drug or treatment.
  • One more thing – don’t expect it to taste nice!

Jiaogulan: An Ancient Asian Vine for Health and Longevity

Susan Patterson by

December 1st, 2012

herbJiaogulantea 255x159 Jiaogulan: An Ancient Asian Vine for Health and LongevityJiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is a potent herbaceous vine and a member of the cucumber family that grows wild throughout China and other Asian countries. Similar in chemical composition and function to ginseng, only more powerful, jiaogulan has been the subject of a number of medical health research studies that have found this herb to be an effective adaptogen and antioxidant.

Sometimes referred to as the “Immortality Herb” or “Miracle Grass,” jiaogulan is now recognized as much more than a “folk remedy,” because of its ability to promote longevity, improve heart health, control weight and reduce stress and fatigue.

Ancient, historical records dating back to the Ming Dynasty point to jiaogulan as a trusted herb used for a wide variety of ailments. Modern American research supports the ancient texts and notes that jiaogulan is one of the top ten most effective anti-aging herbs in the world.

Reduce Free Radicals and Fight Cancer with Jiaogulan

Jiaoglania is full of rich antioxidants that gather up damaging free radicals roaming throughout the body. This reduces mutations in DNA that lead to cancer tumor development. Saponins, a type of phytochemical found in the herb reacts with cholesterol rich membranes around rogue cells to limit the growth of cancer. In addition, a Chinese study of cancer patients who had depleted white blood cells due to radiation therapy demonstrated, with 94% effectiveness, that jiaogulan doubled blood cells counts in as little as five days.

Living Long and Healthy Lives

In a remote area of China known as Guizhou, many people live to be one hundred. Scientists conducting research on these extremely healthy centurions and have discovered that they all have one thing in common; they drink jiaogulan tea. This sweet tasting tea is seemingly responsible for low rates of Alzheimer’s, cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes. Researchers attribute the long and healthy lives to the plethora of antioxidants and saponins found in the potent jiaogulan plant.

Restore Balance

Over 100 saponins are found in jiaogulan, making it an extremely powerful adaptogen capable of restoring balance within the body. A body that is in balance is far healthier than body that is out of balance. Overweight individuals will lose weight while underweight individuals will gain weight in order to bring balance to the body. Jiaogulan also regulates blood pressure and cholesterol and energizes or calms an out of order nervous system.

Because much of the jiaogulan from Southeast Asia is tainted with heavy metals it is always best to choose organic sources of this sweet health- giving herb.

Jiaogulan - The Tea for Memory Diabetes and Cancer

Logo

The Ancient Tea That Preserves Memory, Wards off Diabetes and Fends off Cancer

By: Shane Ellison, MS

Most every drug sold today has a safer, natural-based predecessor. That single fact inspired me to write Over-The-Counter Natural Cures. And ever since, readers have been enjoying inexpensive, natural medicine that their doctors would have never been able to tell them about!

For example, pseudoephedrine is an ingredient found in over-the-counter cough syrup. It is a knock-off of the active ingredients found in “Mormon tea.” Naturally-occurring, Mormon tea can be safely used as a cough suppressant. Today however, it’s banned, while pseudoephedrine remains on the shelves of every corner grocery store in America. In 2004, The Annals of Emergency Medicine noted that pseudoephedrine is so damaging to the heart that it can elicit a heart attack among users – even healthy ones.

Aspirin – the drug that your doctor tells you to take EVERYDAY – is a knock-off of the active ingredient found in white willow bark. The side effects of Aspirin are so severe that they can cause a higher death rate relative to the populations who do not take it. Rarely brought to the attention of users, aspirin depletes the body of the essential nutrient folate…White willow bark is virtually unknown yet remains a safe and effective alternative to Aspirin for pain relief and any purported cardiovascular benefits.

The cover-up gets worse…

5,6,7-trihydroxyflavone, an anti-cancer drug used among those who suffer from leukemia, is a knock-off of the active ingredient found in the roots of Chinese skullcap (Scuterllaria baicalensis). Chinese skullcap is a safe and effective natural cancer fighter that induces cell suicide (apoptosis) among leukemia-derived cancer cells. Meanwhile, the prescription knock-off is overtly toxic and has a very low success rate.

Drug companies and medical doctors obfuscate these historical facts. They like patients to think that drugs are intuitively invented out of thin air courtesy of chemistry masterminds. This helps foster the very profitable belief that drugs are the only option for health.

Understanding that natural medicine guides drug development will help you better understand why most people don’t know about “The immortality herb.” …Until now!

I first heard of the immortality herb as a young chemist having an informal talk with senior chemists. Apparently, a new family of natural compounds were being discovered in an herb known as jiaogulan for their ability to increase lifespan.

It was found that the herb could halt 4 known causes of premature aging.

#1 Protect your DNA

One of the most toxic substances produced by the body is O2, technically known as superoxide. It’s deployed by the immune system to kill invading biological nasties and deleteriously produced as a byproduct of cellular energy production, most notably during exercise.

Because superoxide is so toxic, all organisms living with it contain a natural O2 scavenger known as superoxide dismutase. The more you have the slower you age. In 2009, Phytomedicine highlighted research showing that jiaogulan worked to boost the production of the 02 scavenger, thereby protecting the DNA as well as the heart from free radical damage.

#2 Boost Nitric oxide

Nitric oxide improves circulation of nutrients and oxygen among the 100,000 miles of arteries, veins and capillaries. When produced it relaxes the walls so blood flow is increased and blood pressure controlled. In 1999 Vanderbilt University wrote that their research results “demonstrate that jiaogulan stimulates nitric oxide release and that this may be one mechanism whereby this herbal medicine elicits its many therapeutic effects.”

#3 Increase Insulin sensitivity

Today, high insulin is the chief cause behind obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer and you’ve read all my blabber about how insidious it can be when we have too much. To lower it, you must increase your insulin sensitivity. This lowers blood sugar and boosts energy. In 2009, The Journal of Medicinal Food found that jiaogulan increases insulin sensitivity better than the risky, diabetes drug Avandia!

#4 Ensure apoptosis among cancerous cells

In 2007 China Medical University found that the active ingredients in jiaogulan caused an influx of calcium among cancerous cells, causing them to eradicate themselves from the human body in response to jiogolan consumption!

These life extending properties may be new to you, but not to the Chinese…Jiaogulan was First written about in 1406…and still to this day it is used as a soothing tea by anyone who wants to live young.

Top 7 Foods For Better Sleep At Night

June 12, 2013

Sleep
The adult person needs between 7 and 8 hours of sleep per night, on average. However, many of us have trouble falling asleep, and insomnia affects millions of people worldwide. The health issues associated with insomnia and sleep deprivation are many, from a dysfunctional immune system to premature aging, weight gain and increased risk for heart disease. Fortunately, you can improve your night’s sleep without resorting to dangerous pills or supplements, as the secret lies in your diet. Here you will find 7 foods for better sleep at night:

1. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a great snack before bed, as it is very rich in carbohydrates. As a matter of fact, oatmeal can be considered a win-win situation: they not only stimulate the natural production of serotonin (a neurotransmitter that elevates mood and makes you feel happy), but they are also a slower digesting food that will keep you full throughout the night. One of the reasons of poor night’s sleep is waking up in the middle of the night for a trip to the fridge and back – this will not be the case if you consume a medium-sized bowl of oatmeal before bed!

2. Chickpeas

Few people know that chickpeas are delicious and they contain high amounts of Vitamin B6, an essential vitamin for the production of melatonin. In a nutshell, melatonin is the hormone responsible with sleeping – if it is not produced in the correct amounts, you will not manage to fall asleep. Chickpeas stimulate the production of melatonin, therefore helping you fall asleep faster – and stay asleep until morning.

Nuts and Seeds

 3. Bananas

Bananas have been used as a natural sleep inducer for decades, because just like chickpeas and oatmeal, bananas also boost the levels of serotonin and melatonin. Besides, this delicious fruit is also known to act as a natural muscle relaxant, helping you relax and get ready for bed in a natural, fast and efficient way.

4. Seeds And Nuts

Seeds and nuts have a plethora of health benefits – they not only promote a strong and healthy heart, but they are also very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to elevate your mood in a natural and side effect-free manner. Besides, they are great sources of antioxidants as well. A small cup of almonds or flaxseed consumed right before bedtime will help you sleep like a baby!

5. Warm Milk And Honey

This is a great drink to consume before bed, as warm milk contains an amino-acid called tryptophan (in addition to the calcium that is highly beneficial as well) while the honey relaxes your muscles and your mind. This is a delicious and nutritious drink that acts as a natural sleeping pill.

Jasmine Tea

6. Potatoes

Fried or baked, potatoes are delicious – not only are they delicious, but potatoes are a great source of tryptophan (the sleep-inducing hormone) as well, and they also have an overall soothing effect that is beneficial both for your body and for your mind.

7. Relaxing Tea

Speaking of drinks before bed, milk and honey may be a delicious combination but some types of tea have a soft sedating effect that is perfect for stressed people who have trouble falling asleep. Peppermint, herbal tea or chamomile tea are three of the most popular types of tea that are known for their sleep-inducing effect.

Curbing Sugar, Junk Food and Salt Cravings

Originally published on Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Diets, Uncategorized, WEIGHT MANAGEMENT by for Bel Marra Health

Salt and sugar cravings can sabotage healthy diets and result in the unwanted and unplanned consumption of processed junk food. The following foods can help you to stay on track with your diet and to satisfy your salt and sugar cravings in a healthy way.

Nuts and Seeds – To Eliminate Too Much Salt?

Although low salt diets are all the rage, your body actually requires salt in order to function properly. The real problem with salt in our diets is that it often comes from unhealthy processed foods. Nuts and seeds are a natural source of salt and they are excellent at satisfying cravings for salty junk food. They are however high in fat and calories, so be sure to consume them in moderation (no more than 1/4 cup per day).

Veggies and Hummus are Always a Great Addition – Stop Binge Eating!

When a salt craving hits, you may find yourself reaching for a bag of chips, promising yourself that you will just have a few. Unfortunately chips and other salty junk food items are often devoid of fiber and protein which are required for satiation. This means that your good intentions of moderation can easily turn into an episode that more closely resembles binge eating. A great alternative to salt laden junk food is veggies and hummus. The fiber and water content of the vegetables and the protein in the hummus will fill you up, and the natural salts in this snack combination will help to eliminate your cravings for unhealthy junk food.

Fruit

If you have a ravenous sweet tooth and find yourself binge eating on junk food sweets such as cookies and candy, then stalk up your fridge with a variety of fruits. Fruits provide a natural sweetness while also supplying your body with nutrients, water and fiber — all three of which help to quash cravings.

Dark Chocolate is Not Junk Food

If fruit alone just isn’t cutting it, indulge in a square or two of dark chocolate daily. When buying chocolate, check the ingredients label and choose chocolate that has a high cocoa content (at least 60%), little or no added sugar, and that is made from cocoa butter as opposed to palm oils . You can melt the chocolate and dip your fruit into it, or eat it alone, but be sure to eat it slowly and really enjoy its flavours. When it comes to dark chocolate, a little goes a long way!

Unsweetened Yoghurt to Stop Binge Eating

Yoghurt will satisfy your hunger because it is high in protein which helps to quash cravings. Also yoghurt helps provide your gut with healthy bacteria (probiotics) which is important because a deficiency in healthy gut bacteria can cause sugar cravings. You should buy unsweetened yoghurt because most yoghurt has either sugar or artificial sweeteners added to it. Finally, if you are really craving something sweet you can add some unpasteurized honey or stevia and fresh fruit to the yoghurt.

Fermented Foods

Similar to yogurt, fermented foods such as kefir, kimchee, miso, kombucha and homemade pickled vegetables, provide your gut with healthy bacteria which overtime will reduce your junk food cravings. Also, for reasons unknown, the sourness of these foods seems to instantly reduce cravings for sugar-laden junk food and pickled vegetables help to curb salt cravings.

Tea

So it’s not really a food, but tea is excellent at satisfying sweet cravings. The liquid in tea helps to fool your stomach into thinking that it is full. Also the caffeine content of traditional teas such as green tea and orange pekoe tea helps to temporarily reduce your appetite. If you are craving something sweet, choose an herbal tea and add some stevia or raw honey to it. You may also want to try consuming some liquorice tea because it is known for its ability to reduce sugar cravings

Jiaogulan, five-leaf ginseng, Herb of Longevity

What Is Jiaogulan Tea?

Jiaogulan tea is an herbal tea that has been consumed in China since before the 13th century, and has made its way to the rest of the world. Made from a ground cover plant that is a close relative of the cucumber, it can be prepared as a hot or cold tea and has a slightly bittersweet taste. It is believed to have a number of beneficial effects on the body, and the leaves have even been called the Herb of Immortality. Like most other herbal teas, jiaogulan tea is completely caffeine free.

Legend says that jiaogulan tea was first discovered by an early Chinese emperor. Fond of boiling any water that he was to drink in order to purify it, he was said to be traveling in an area of China where the jiaogulan tea plants grew wild. Some of the leaves found their way into the water, and the emperor's love of the resulting tea cemented its place in China's holistic, herbal history. Centuries later, the tea is still consumed in large quantities by the residents of Guizhou Province, and these residents are known for their long and healthy lives.

Research has shown that chemicals in jiaogulan tea have the capability of slowing the development of cancerous cells as well as helping to maintain the healthy functioning of the body's immune system. The tea increases the body's ability to produce disease-fighting white blood cells. It can also help those who suffer from chronic bronchitis.

While scientists have determined that jiaogulan tea does not prevent heart disease, it is rich in antioxidants and has been shown to have other positive effects on the cardiovascular system.

Components in the tea help break down buildup in the body's blood vessels, and can help lower levels of bad cholesterol while raising the good. The same antioxidants can be beneficial to the liver, helping to restore function and protecting it from permanent scarring.

As it is naturally caffeine free, the tea has also been found to help sufferers of insomnia. Those who regularly drink it testify to a general feeling of well-being and a strengthening of different systems of the body. Jiaogulan tea also can help lower blood pressure in some individuals.

Drinking jiaogulan tea can result in some vague feelings of nausea. Since it has such a powerful impact on the clotting ability of the blood, it is possible that the tea can interfere with a number of medications that affect platelets and those that regulate the immune system. It can also conflict with herbal medicines.

What Are the Medical Uses of Gynostemma Pentaphyllum?

Gynostemma pentaphyllum is a perennial vine in the Cucurbitaceae, or cucumber, family. The plant is native to China, South Korea, and Japan but can grow in the majority of temperate climates. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Gynostemma pentaphyllum is used as an adaptogen and anti-aging remedy. Clinical studies indicate that this plant may be useful in treating diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Side effects, such as nausea, as well as interactions with other medications, may occur.

This plant is also known as jiaogulan, five-leaf ginseng, poor man's ginseng, miracle grass, fairy herb, sweet tea vine, and southern ginseng. It is believed to improve overall health and well-being and increase the ability to tolerate stress. It is known in some areas of China as the immortality herb because people who live in the area drink the tea and apparently live to a very old age. It is also said to help increase appetite, reduce pain and swelling, and ease coughs. Gynostemma pentaphyllum may also be given to treat chronic gastritis, or stomach pain, improve memory, and prevent hair loss.

Recent research published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Hormone and Metabolic Research demonstrates that Gynostemma pentaphyllum may be appropriate in treating diabetic patients. In addition, studies show that this herb may also be useful in treating cardiovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure. Other studies also conclude that Gynostemma pentaphyllum may reduce total cholesterol levels and increase good cholesterol, or high-density lipoproteins.

Some people may experience side effects with long-term use of Gynostemma pentaphyllum including severe nausea or diarrhea. Women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid this herb because one of its chemical components may cause birth defects. Since it may slow blood clotting, those taking blood-thinning medication or who are undergoing surgery should let their doctors know that they are taking this herbal medication. People on immunosuppressants should probably avoid taking this herb because it can make those drugs less effective.

Gynostemma pentaphyllum is sold as an extract, pill, capsule or tea. In the U.S., it is marketed as Panta or Penta tea. The recommended dose according to the packaging is generally two to three 180 mg capsules twice a day. Participants in the cholesterol studies were given 10 mg of Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract three times a day. As with any dietary supplement regimen, those considering the use of this this herb may want to consult a qualified health care professional first.

Used for a variety of health complaints. contains 82 saponins, some of which are directly related to the ginsenosides found in ginseng root. Japanese scientists discovered that the plant contained ingredients very similar to those found in ginseng. Further research showed that jiao gu lan has a wide range of actions in the body, with a general overall effect of helping to balance and regulate body systems, such as the cardiovascular and hormonal systems. Studies have since been conducted which indicate that jiao gu lan has antioxidant properties and helps support circulation and immune systems.

Jiao gu lan contains substances called gypenosides. These are similar to the active constituents in ginseng, but jiaogulan contains over three times as many. Furthermore, jiao gu lan is believed to have a superior action to ginseng, being more supportive without causing overstimulation. In China it is often referred to as 'women's ginseng' since it is considered to be much kinder to women's body systems than ginseng.

The water extract of jiao gu lan has demonstrated a marked effect in lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Jiao gu lan,is also a main adaptogenic herbs, helps to support a number of body functions and helps to support the body in times of stress it can be beneficial for a range of people. Jiao gu lan (gynostemma pentaphyllum), this herb native to the mountainous areas of southern China and is receiving a lot of recognition for its use as an anti-aging tonic and adaptogen. The tasty tea made from the stems and leaves of this herbaceous perennial vine have 4 times more ginseng-like saponins than either American or Asian Ginseng. It has been used in Chinese Medicine to delay the aging process and increase energy. Research in Japan shows that the herb has a powerful effect on numerous body systems. It has been used in Chinese medicine to maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, enhance circulation, increase energy without being over-stimulating, improve focus and memory, support a strong immune system and can increase stamina and endurance for athletes. This vigorous perennial vine is hardy to 10 degrees and can climb 20 to 30 feet in a season. Jiao gu lan prefers a moist partly shaded location and responds well to a fertile garden soil. Quite easy to grow and will produce a large crop to harvest for tea. This is a plant quickly gaining in popularity.

History of Jiaogulan Tea

Back in the 70′s, the Chinese government asked their scientists to look into people living in the small mountains provinces of Guizhou, Guangxi and Sichuan (Southern China region), whereby it was found that there was a higher rate of centagenarians (people aged over 100 years) there. Not only were the residents living to a very ripe old age, but they were in very good health. Incidences were very low for the usual aging health ailments like Alzheimer’s Disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer!

After 10 years of research, the scientists found that the villagers had been drinking a tea made from the leaves of a vine plant called “Jiaogulan”. They drank the tea a few times daily just because it tasted good and it was naturally sweet. Since then, there have been more research and studies conducted in China, USA, Japan, Germany and India – e.g. there is a PDF format file of the extensive information of Jiaogulan here ===> International Journal of Research in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences – Jiaogulan (Gynostemma Pentaphyllum).

The Jiaogulan or Gynostemma Pentaphyllum plant is part of the cucumber plant family and it grows like a vine. The leaves and stems are easily made into a tea by pouring some boiling water over them, steeping for 2-3 minutes and then drank during the day. The longer the tea is brewed, the sweeter its taste. I have found its taste to be similar to ginseng.

Jiaogulan is found to be safe to drink and there is no adverse overdosing or side effects. It is recommended that one drinks 2 to 3 cups of Jiaogulan tea a day.

The many wonderful health benefits of Jiaogulan ==>

The simple Jiaogulan herb has the amazing properties as an antioxidant, immunomodulator, adaptogen, anti-cancer, neuroprotective, nootropic, and hepatoprotective. Listed below are its health benefits :-
a) it’s a cheap substitute for ginseng

Jiaogulan has 85 saponins (called gypenosides), out of which 4 are identical to ginseng’s, but are four (4) times as concentrated as ginseng, which has 25 saponins. You know the goodness of ginseng – it gives one energy and vitality, without the effects of caffeine. Ginseng also promotes longevity and is good for our heart, adrenal cortex and general wellbeing.

The high numbers of gypenosides may account for a stronger regulatory effect on a number of our systems, like blood pressure, reproductive system, digestive system, immune system, and more.

b) it’s an adaptogenic herb, good for stress
An adaptogen is a metabolic regulator that helps us to adapt quickly and well to the environmental factors around us, such as anxiety, stress, aging or injury. It helps us to counteract and or prevent disturbances to homeostasis due to those stressors. The hallmark of an adaptogen is its ability to assist and promote the absorption of nutrients for a malnourished person. Hence, if there are people who have been ill and are recuperating, this would be a good tea to regain their nutrients and health, as well as their energy and wellbeing levels.

It is also good in regulating the hormonal systems of both men and women, especially in times of stress.

c) high in anti-oxidants

Being high in anti-oxidants, the Jiaogulan tea promotes anti-aging, and helps to prevent cancer by contributing to the repair of our cells, preventing DNA destruction that results in cell mutation (and cancer), i.e. it keeps free radicals from destroying our cells.

d) lower high cholesterol

Jiaogulan has been found to be effective in managing our good and bad cholesterol levels by regulating serum cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL (bad cholesterol) and HDL (good cholesterol).

e) high blood pressure

This herb can help to regulate blood pressure levels by improving the metabolic functions of our heart (through proper diastolic and systolic actions), as well as ensuring that our coronary blood vessels are relaxed with the release of nitric oxide in the body.

f) it promotes good, restful sleep

When we don’t sleep deeply and well at night, many of our functions the following day are often impaired. This tea helps to promote good, restful sleep and therefore, it helps to counter insomnia or restless sleep. Despite it being “energy giving”, drinking a cup of the tea right before bedtime does not disturb its ability to give us a good night’s sleep.

g) good energy and vitality

Due to its ginseng-like properties, one gets energised and have more vitality to carry out the day’s functions. This tea is safer to consume compared to coffee or tea, which has caffeine and tannin that will give us an energy high for a while, but will lead to a caffeine crash and we will feel tired again.

h) good for anti-aging

This is a good tea for people who are getting on in years, when their energy levels, vitality levels, and health are affected

i) good to help go through perimenopause and menopause

Because of its many good health benefits mentioned above, if one is going through perimenopause or menopause, this tea will definitely help to ease the hormonal effects that women go through for years. We will regain our energy levels, calmness, good sleep, good health and outlook of life!

j) rest where rest is needed, energy where energy is needed

Because of its good adaptogenic qualities, when one needs to rest, the tea will help her rest. For example, my eldest son had finished his semester exam recently and he was spending his holiday week being a bum – sleeping more than 12 hours at night and playing computer games the whole day!

When I gave him the Jiaogulan tea to drink, he couldn’t sleep longer than 8 hours and had to get out of bed because he was wide awake by then and he just couldn’t go back to sleep then!
In my case, I often lack energy due to my perimenopause, but when I drank this tea, it gave me the energy that I sorely needed to do my chores. Amazing!

k) good for digestion and losing weight

As the gypenosides help to regulate our digestive systems, our digestion is enhanced greatly with smoother bowel movements/regularity. Combined with the increased activity levels due to increased energy and improved digestion/metabolism systems, extra weight can be lost.

Warning!

1) Do not drink this tea if you are pregnant or nursing!
2) Start drinking this tea on a weekend, just in case you may experience some tiredness on the second day or so after. My second daughter and I felt very sleepy on the second day after drinking the Jiaogulan tea – maybe our body was getting used to the tea.
3) On Day 2, you may experience a runny bowel movement but it is alright, as our body is clearing toxins.
4) Drinking too much Jiaogulan tea at the beginning may cause nausea – so, start with just 1 cup or 2, and preferably after a meal…to prevent nausea.
5) If you feel sleepy after drinking the tea, just have a short nap and your body will be energised after that. When you do some light exercises like walking or doing your chores, your body will feel energised again.
6) Please leave 4 hours apart in between drinking this tea and taking your Western medication, in case there may be any contraindications.
7) It is a blood thinner and therefore, please stop taking this tea at least a week before a scheduled surgery, or inform your doctor if you have a sudden surgery on.
8) Please take this Jiaogulan Tea at your own risk, I will not be held responsible just in case you have any adverse reactions to the tea.

I strongly encourage you to try taking Jiagulan Tea and see for yourself its wonderful health effects. I’m sure you will notice that you will be sleeping better, you have more energy and vitality to face your days, and if you have any health problems…do see if your health will improve.

Seven Easy Ways To Detox Your Way To More Energy

A personal detox program can be simple, yet impressively effective. The healthy benefits include less anxiety, reduced stress, diminished inflammation and more personal energy. And the best part about it is that you can start cleansing your body of toxins today.

Gradual Beginnings

A healthy detoxification program should always begin gradually.

With so many methods available, it can be difficult to find a simple starting point. As an integrative medical doctor and detoxification expert, I’d like to share some of my top recommended steps for safe and effective detoxification that can provide lasting energy, vitality and overall wellness.

1. Reduce Your Exposure To Toxins

Every day, we are exposed to harmful health-robbing toxins such as bisphenol-A (BPA), phthalates, PFOA, formaldehyde, PDBEs, heavy metals, etc. from cleaning and beauty products, cookware, the environment and other sources. We are also bombarded with toxins from processed, fried or non-organic foods, alcohol, stimulants, medications and more. These toxins accumulate in the body over time and damage DNA, create inflammation and impair critical biological functions. You can reduce exposure by choosing all-natural foods and non-toxic products whenever possible, and make sure your home and work environments are properly ventilated. Have yourself tested for food allergies if you feel you may be sensitive to gluten, dairy, eggs or other allergenic foods. Allergens can increase the permeability of your digestive tract, allowing toxins to easily enter your circulation.

2. Alkalize Your Diet

Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables high in alkalizing minerals — such as potassium, magnesium and calcium — by eating foods like red potatoes, avocado and Brussels sprouts. Green leafy vegetables are rich in magnesium, while broccoli, sea vegetables, collards, chard and other greens are rich in calcium. An alkalizing mineral broth can be easily made by combining potatoes, celery, parsley, green beans, zucchini, beet tops, kale, onions and seaweed in a full pot of water; simmering for an hour or two; and pouring off the liquid for use. This method makes a highly nutritious, mineral-rich liquid suitable for a seasonal cleanse.

Other alkalizing food sources include liquid chlorophyll and powdered green supplements, as well as the highly alkaline umeboshi plum paste, which is a sour plum commonly used in Japanese cuisine. An alkaline diet can aid in the removal of toxins, reduce inflammation and boost overall health and energy.

3. Pre-Cleanse With Gentle Supplements

Gentle detox supplementation begins with natural ingredients that help to clear toxins from the circulation and digestive systems, while providing overall health support. Start with an organic 10-mushroom formula, which helps remove toxins and provides powerful benefits to every major body system, including the immune system. Modified citrus pectin is another key supplement that safely removes heavy metals and environmental toxins from circulation and digestion, reduces inflammation, boosts immunity, and protects against cancer and chronic illness by blocking harmful galectin-3 molecules.

4. Detoxify Organs And Tissues With Nutrients And Botanicals

After gently detoxifying circulation and digestion, you can gradually advance to more thorough detoxification of organs and tissues where toxins are often stored over time. For deeper, in-depth detoxification, I recommend incorporating compounds, herbs and nutrients such as n-acetyl cysteine, selenium, MSM, alpha-lipoic acid, milk thistle, cilantro, goldenrod, garlic and dandelion leaf. These natural detoxifying agents have their own affinities for specific organs and systems of the body, and work to successfully eliminate toxins without side effects. They also boost vital energy and provide a wide array of antioxidant support to combat the oxidative stress caused during toxin removal.

5. Hydrate

Dehydration can lead to inflammation and oxidative stress, thus increasing toxicity. Drink plenty of pure water and herbal tea to help assist the flushing of toxins from your body and keep your natural detox functions running smoothly. Proper hydration promotes better functioning of all your body’s systems.

6. Get Moving

Simple, moderate exercise on a regular basis helps keep the lymphatic system moving, release stored toxins, increase circulation and improve immune response. Movement also aids in releasing physical, emotional and psychological energies that may have you feeling “stuck.” Even just 15 minutes of walking, especially in a natural setting, can offer powerful benefits for detoxification and overall health.

7. Let Go With Simple Meditation

In today’s modern environment, we are often bombarded by stress, anxiety and negative thoughts and emotions. Stress affects us physically by degrading immune function and increasing stress hormones, which promote blood sugar imbalances, inflammation and oxidative stress. You can help clear this toxic burden on your mental, emotional and physical health through the process of letting go. Regular meditation practice is a proactive and well-researched method for easing these burdens, even if you meditate for only 10 minutes a day. Simply sit quietly and focus your attention, as well as your breathing, on a particular object such as a small stone. As thoughts and emotions arise, acknowledge and release them, bringing your attention back to your breath.

Numerous published studies show meditation can improve psychological/emotional well-being and help with issues ranging from cardiovascular disease, inflammation and immune activity to pain, anxiety, depression and more.

Following these relatively easy, yet important, tips for a successful cleanse allows you to quickly feel the benefits of reduced stress and anxiety, decreased inflammation and increased energy as well as improved health and vitality. They are rewards you won’t want to miss.
