Study Suggests Drinking Orange Juice Reduces Dementia Risk By Almost 50 Percent

A new study suggests that if you drink one glass of orange juice on a daily basis it could greatly reduce your risk of acquiring dementia.

In this study, over a period of 16 years from 1986 to 2002, 28,000 US men were tracked regarding their daily eating and drinking of fruits and vegetables and the relationship to subjective cognitive function during that time. When the data was first collected the average age of the men was 51 years.
The outcome of the study revealed 47 percent of the men who drank a small glass of orange juice every day were less likely to develop poor cognitive abilities than the men who drank less than one serving per month.
The study also found that men experiencing less reduction in memory function were the men who ate the most vegetables and were 34 percent less likely to report cognitive loses.
“Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and nutrients, including antioxidants, that can help protect the brain,” said Hannah Gardener, a researcher at the University of Miami who was not involved in the research, according to the Daily Mail.
“One of the most important factors in this study is that we were able to research and track such a large group of men over a 20-year period of time, allowing for very telling results,” said Changzheng Yuan, a research fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and who was the study’s lead author as well.
Yuan suggests that it is generally best to consume no more than four to six ounces of fruit juices per day because fruit juices are normally high in calories from the high concentration of fructose sugars in them.
According to the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, “dementia is a usually progressive condition marked by the development of multiple cognitive deficits, such as memory impairment, aphasia (the loss of the power to use or comprehend words usually resulting from brain damage), and the inability to plan and initiate complex behavior.”
Also according to Merriam-Webster, dementia is also “diagnosed only when both memory and another cognitive function are each affected severely enough to interfere with a person’s ability to carry out routine daily activities.”
It is estimated that 46.8 million people lived with dementia in 2015 worldwide and the number will rise to 131.5 million by 2050, according to the London-based non-profit organization Alzheimer’s Disease International.

Mobile app 'finds anti-cancer molecules in food'

An app that harnesses the unused processing power of idling mobile phones has been used to identify anti-cancer molecules in a range of foods.

The research identified carrots, celery and oranges as having the highest number of cancer-fighting molecules.
The DreamLab app, which has now been downloaded 83,000 times, works while users sleep and has so far performed more than 10 million calculations.
One expert said there was a "long road ahead" to develop treatments.
The app uses an algorithm to measure the properties of more than 8,000 everyday foods against a comprehensive database, looking for molecules that have successfully tackled cancer in lab tests of cell cultures or animals.
Grapes, dill and cabbage also had high numbers of these anti-cancer molecules.
OrangesImage copyrightGETTY IMAGES
Image captionOranges are not the only fruit offering anti-cancer molecules, according to the study
The research also suggests existing anti-diabetic and anti-microbial drugs could play a role in anti-cancer therapy.
Lead researcher Dr Kirill Veselkov, from Imperial College London's department of surgery and cancer, said: "This is a groundbreaking moment for us.
"The next step is to use AI technologies to explore the impact that different combinations of drugs and food-based molecules could have on individuals."
Weilin Wu, Cancer Research UK's health information officer, said: "This intriguing study suggests we might be able to find leads for new cancer therapies among the naturally occurring chemicals that make up our food and drink.
"But even if this approach bears fruit, there's a long road ahead to develop them into cancer treatments and test whether they're effective in treating the disease.
"Your overall diet is much more important for reducing cancer risk than eating a particular type of food.
"There's good evidence that you can reduce your cancer risk by eating more foods high in fibre, like fruit and veg, and cutting down on processed and red meat, and high calorie foods and drink."
The app is a partnership between Imperial College London and the Vodafone Foundation. The findings have been published in Nature.

Curious Cook: Pesticides and other thoughts - MUST READ

Part of the research into glyphosate for the last article provided additional free insight into the use of pesticides and treatments for fresh vegetables and fruits. The interesting aspect was not only the surprising amount of residues but also the frequent use of multiple chemicals on single crops.
Curious Cook: Pesticides and other thoughts

Strawberries
As an example, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has identified strawberries as probably the most contaminated fruit in terms of pesticides and fruit treatment compounds. A quick search through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Pesticides Data Program (PDP) database revealed that strawberries for human consumption in the USA can be treated with combinations of over 70 different active compounds, with varying degrees of toxicity.
However in the amounts detected, the USDA and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have indicated there are no severe threats to human health provided the residue levels are kept below recommended limits. Note there may be more chemicals used but the PDP database did not indicate every possible compound used on commercial strawberries; for example, glyphosate was not included.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is probably more thorough in its monitoring of crop residues. It had also reviewed and published the Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) for over 485 chemicals which may be found on strawberries, though not all of them are regulated or actually permitted to be used – these MRLs are limits used by producers and test laboratories to analyse for food safety issues.
There were 109 chemicals originally approved for use on strawberries, including neonicotinoids (or neonics), often called “bee killers”. Since April 2018, three major neonics (clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam) are banned from use in open fields though it seems thiamethoxam may still be applied in enclosed industrial greenhouses. The same detailed levels of EFSA documentation and processes apply for all other kinds of food crops.
Again, the EFSA suggests that permitted chemical residues in strawberries and other crops are safe for human consumption if they do not exceed their MRLs.
The dirty list
To be honest, the following list of fruits and vegetables was originally drawn up by the EWG, an organisation probably more known as an environmental lobbyist group than a proper scientific research outfit.
However, after struggling with the PDP and the EFSA pesticides databases, it became clear that there is no such thing as easy access to information regarding toxicity, dosage, frequency of application and consumer removal of many crop treatments without reading through the documentation of every formulation containing these chemicals and the diluents/surfactants used with such chemicals.
So after checking various items on the list as best as I could (and finding no significant discrepancies), I am assuming the EWG had done its homework properly when compiling the following list.
So, based on the analysis from the EWG, crops with the most treatment residues are: strawberries, spinach, kale, nectarine, apples, grapes, peaches, cherries, pears, tomatoes, celery, potatoes and hot peppers.
Potatoes are one of the crops with the highest pesticide residue. Photo: Sethoscope/Flick
The EWG also states that nearly 70% of all produce sold in the United States is contaminated with pesticide residues, though it does not warn that all such produce is necessarily bad for health, provided all such residues are below the recommended MRLs. It merely suggests that long-term ingestion or over-ingestion of such residues may have a detrimental effect on health, which is likely to be true for sections of the population.
The above list are vegetables and fruits which are commonly targeted by insects, fungi, bacteria and other pests, and are therefore often sprayed with various compounds to prevent loss of production. Regarding potatoes, major treatments are also applied after harvest to prolong the crop storage life. In Britain in 2004, 2,677,280 tonnes of potatoes were treated with various compounds such as imazalil, thiabendazole and/or stored using ethylene, a gas which inhibits the sprouting of tubers. The main treatment was fumigation with chlorpropham, which was applied to 2,257,603 tonnes, or over 84% of the potato crop for that year.
The clean list
Of all commercial fruit and food crops, the following were found by the EWG to contain the lowest amount of pesticide residues: avocados, sweet corn, pineapples, sweet peas (frozen), onion, papayas, eggplants, asparagus, kiwis, cabbage, cauliflower, cantaloupes, broccoli, mushrooms and honeydew melons.
Cauliflower is on the clean list. Photo: Liz West/Flickr
Most of the above either have thick, inedible skins which need to be removed before eating or have hydrophobic surfaces which repel water.
In summary, if it is not possible/feasible to consume organic produce, it might be worthwhile to focus on picking more of your greens and fruits from the clean list above.
A likely carcinogen
As a comment, imazalil (also known as enilconazole or chloramizole) is one of the most common pesticides found on fruits. A huge proportion of oranges and other citrus fruits as well as potatoes are routinely treated with imazalil, even though both the EPA and the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) categorise imazalil as “likely to be carcinogenic to humans”.

Oranges are treated with a chemical that is reputed to be carcinogenic. Photo: Frederique Voisin Demery/Flick
The concentration of this compound is mostly on the fruits’ skin and therefore exposure should be minimal if the skin of the fruit is discarded. This may not be so easy if fruits such as grapes are treated with the chemical (which is the case in many countries).
To remove residues, the best suggestion is to soak and wash produce in a 1% baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) water solution for 12-15 minutes, as the alkalinity apparently destabilises and loosens pesticide molecules.
Honey and babies
We had a new granddaughter arrive recently, and automatically my wife offered the standard French advice to refrain from giving her any honey-based drinks for at least a year. Then it occurred to me that I do not know the reason for this common warning, so it was worth investigating.
It turns out it involves the most toxic poison known to humans, Botulinum Type H (BTX-H), which needs a dose of only two nanograms or less per kilo of body weight to be lethal – this is known as the Lethal Dose (LD). By contrast, the very lethal poison batrachotoxin, commonly known as curare, has a LD of two micrograms, 1,000 times less powerful by volume than botulinum H toxin.

Honey can be dangerous to babies under one. Photo: Harsha K R/Flickr
And the reason why babies should not be given honey is because spores of clostridium botulinum bacteria are not infrequently found in honey. The digestive systems of very young babies are not able to kill such bacteria in their stomachs until they are over a year old. Left to breed, clostridium botulinum will produce enough botulinum toxin (BTX) to provoke health issues quickly.
Note that BTX is the cause of botulism, not the bacteria. The bacteria are widespread in the environment and many food products – it is impossible to avoid over a normal lifetime.
However, people normally do not get infected because the bacteria cannot survive exposure to oxygen or highly acidic conditions (pH 4.6) – regular stomach acid (pH between 1.5-3.5) will destroy any ingested bacteria. But BTX is unaffected by stomach acid and needs heat treatment at temperatures of 85°C or more for five minutes to deactivate the toxin. The bacteria can also enter the bloodstream via wounds, and then propagate.
There are several varieties of BTX which are classified as Types A through H, though most are not as lethal as Type H. The cosmetic treatment botox, for example, is based on BTX A or B.
All types of BTX profoundly affect the function of an important neurotransmitter called acetylcholine – this disrupts normal nerve signalling and causes muscle paralysis. Therefore botox treatments work by relaxing muscles on the face and reducing the effect of wrinkly skin.
The good news is antidotes exist for most types of BTX poisoning, provided treatment is received in time (although they can have side-effects) – however, this does not apply for BTX-H because it is highly unlikely to be survivable.
Summary
In summary, when ingesting food stored in a low-acid, low oxygen environment (such as packaged foods or old tins), make sure to heat it to 85°C for at least five minutes – this should also be done for re-sealed food stored at inadequate cold temperatures (above 3°C). And never ever give honey to young babies.

Five Discarded Food Parts (That You Should be Eating)

April 18, 2014

You may be eating all the right foods to add years to your life… But you may be throwing away some of the best parts.
Outer-layers, seeds, rinds, stems… There’s some serious nutrition hiding in the parts of your food that usually end up in the trash. Here are five discarded food parts that you should be eating.
You can feel the difference eating a healthy diet makes. But if you want to get the most nutrition out of your food, you’ll have to eat some parts you never considered.1. Banana Peel: You probably toss them in the trash without a second thought. But that’s a mistake. Banana peels are high in the fiber that helps fight off heart disease. You’ll also get B-vitamins and polyphenols. But its most surprising benefit is that it may boost your mood. Banana peels are high in tryptophan. It’s an amino acid that converts to serotonin—the feel-good chemical—in your brain. Eating two banana peels a day can boost your serotonin levels 15%.1
If you’re going to eat banana peels, make sure they’re organic. But if you just can’t get used to eating them raw, you can always add them to a smoothie. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can make homemade banana peel tea.
2. Carrot Greens: It’s not uncommon to see a horse devour a carrot whole. And they have the right idea. Carrot greens are rich in vitamins A, B6, C, and K.2 They’re also a good source of niacin, which can help you fight colorectal cancer. The manganese in carrot greens will also help you keep strong bones and relieve arthritis pain.
You can add them to salads or use as a garnish in your main course. Roasting your carrots with the stem intact will give you some of the nutrition from the greens as well. If fresh carrot juice is your thing, try keeping the greens on next time you make it. It’ll give you a totally different flavor and a lot of extra nutrition.
3. Orange Peel: These bitter peels can lower your cholesterol better than prescription drugs. One study found that the polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) in orange peels lower LDL cholesterol by 40%.3 That’s impressive enough on its own. But d-limonene, another compound in orange peel, can cut cancer risk by 30%. Eating it with black tea helps slash your cancer risk by over 70%.
You won’t want to eat a raw orange peel… But adding organic zest to a salad or smoothie will give your food flavor and cancer-fighting power. If you’d prefer to supplement, you can find natural d-limonene and bitter orange extract pills online.
4. Beet Greens: Their red roots are a great way to lower your blood pressure. You may already be roasting or juicing them a few times a week. But their leafy greens are just as valuable. Beet greens are full of calcium and iron.4 Their high-fiber content helps protect against a stroke. Beet greens are also a great source of vitamin K, which can cut your diabetes risk in half.
There isn’t a quality supplement source for beet greens. Your best bet is to get the real thing. Gently steam and drain them like you would any other leafy green vegetable. Their texture and taste is similar to kale. But you’ll also get a hint of beet flavor in each bite. Or if you’re already juicing the roots, just throw the greens in too.
5. Watermelon Rind: Like the flesh, the juicy white and green rinds of watermelon contain citrulline. It helps produce the amino acid arginine. The result is relaxed blood vessels, optimized erectile function, and a healthier heart.5 But watermelon rind has 60% more citrulline than the flesh.
A healthier heart and happier sex life will help you learn to like the taste of watermelon rind. But if watermelons aren’t in season, you can get citrulline as a supplement.
They may not be glamorous…eating them may be taboo…but when you throw away these food parts, you’re putting nutrients in the garbage instead of your body. Not to mention, you’ll be getting your full money’s worth. Give them a chance. They may even become a regular part of your diet.

TOP PICKS: Ripe for the picking

27 March 2012| last updated at 12:35PM

By Syida Lizta Amirul Ihsan | slizta@nstp.com.my

We all know that we should increase our intake of fruit and vegetables in our diet. Question is, which fruit to choose and for what? Nutritionist Hong Ya Chee gives Syida Lizta Amirul Ihsan some tips on the best health options from the fruit counter.

Grapefruit

 1. Grapefruit is high in enzymes that burn fats, has high water content and less sodium.
“A combination of these three makes grapefruit a perfect food for increasing your body’s metabolism. Try eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice every day and you will notice how quickly you lose those extra kgs,” Hong says.

Apple

2. One apple provides up to 5g fibre, more than many cereals. This helps your digestion.
“Fibre can either pull water out of your colon to keep things moving along when you’re backed up, or absorb excess water from your stool to slow your bowels down,” she says.

A Cornell University study also found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

Grape

3. Grapes are rich sources of vitamins A, C, B6 and folate in addition to essential minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and selenium.

Grapes contain flavonoids that are very powerful antioxidants, which can reduce the damage caused
by free radicals and slacken ageing.

Berries

4. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and cranberries are loaded with fibre, which helps you feel full (and eat less).
“They top the charts in antioxidant power, protecting your body against inflammation and free radicals, molecules that can damage cells and organs.”

Pomegranate

5. Pomegranates are full of antioxidants, the vitamins and enzymes known for keeping low-density bad cholesterol from oxidising and causing atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.

Passion fruit

6. Passion fruit is a great source of Vitamin A, good for our eyesight. It is also high in fibre and has potassium, an electrolyte that helps maintain your body fluid levels.

Dragon fruit

7. It contains Vitamin C which helps to improve the immune system and heal bruises and open wounds quickly.
“The Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) content in dragon fruit helps our bodies generate a lot more energy and metabolises carbohydrates.”

Orange

8. Orange is known for its Vitamin C, a powerful natural antioxidant.

“Consumption of foods rich in Vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals from the blood,” she says.

Kiwi

9. It contains calcium which helps to build strong bones and teeth, magnesium and copper to strengthen bones.
“In addition to its bone strengthening properties, copper also facilitates brain development.”

Papaya

10. Papaya contains a lot of essential vitamins to strengthen our immune system. “This fruit contains a high concentration of phytonutrients and is a very good source of Vitamins A, C, and E.”

Eat lots of Sweet Potatoes – Quite Interesting Indeed!!

It’s been said that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, made dry land, planted a garden, made animals and fish. . .  All before making a human. He made and provided all the foods we’d need to eat before we were born. These are best and more powerful when eaten raw. We’re such slow learners. . .

God left us a great clue as to what foods help what part of our body!
God’s Pharmacy! Amazing!

For instance:

carrot.jpgA sliced Carrot looks like the human eye.  The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye…and YES science now shows that carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.
tomatoesA Tomato has four chambers and is red.  The heart is red and has four chambers.  All of the research shows tomatoes are indeed pure heart and blood food.
grapesGrapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart.  Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.
walnut.jpgA Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebelums.  Even the wrinkles or folds are on the nut just like the neo-cortex.  We now know that walnuts help develop over 3 dozen neuro-transmitters for brain function.

kidneybeansKidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

celery.jpgCelery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and more look just like bones.  These foods specifically target bone strength.  Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium.  If you don’t have enough sodium in your diet the body pulls it from the bones, making them weak.  These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

avocardo.jpgEgg Plant, Avocadoes and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female – they look just like these organs.  Today’s research shows that when a woman eats 1 avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight and prevents cervicle cancers.  And how profound is this? …. it takes exactly 9 months to grow an Avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 phytolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

figsFigs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow.  Figs increase the motility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

KumuraSweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.
olivesOlives assist the health and function of the ovaries
citrusGrapefruits, Oranges, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mamary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

onionsOnions look like body cells.  Todays research shows that onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells.  They even produce tears which wash the epithelial lasyers of the eyes
bananas.jpgBananas, Cucumber, Zuchini and more target the size and strengh of the male sexual organ.  It’s true!
peanutsPeanuts have a profound effect on the testicles and sexual libido. Peanuts were banned as a food for males by the church ofin during the middle ages. Most people don’t realize that arginine, the main component of Viagra, comes from peanuts.

Can Citrus Fruit Save Your Life?

Originally published on Friday, June 21st, 2013

Orange you going to eat your daily dose of citrus fruit? You’ll definitely want to after discovering that these juicy balls of sweet ‘n sour goodness can provide you with far more life-saving nutrients than just a shot of vitamin C.

78652392Citrus fruits contain high levels of phytonutrients, which are plant-based nutrients with some powerful properties. One type of phytonutrient found in citrus, called limonoids, are responsible for the sour kick you get when you bite into a piece of citrus fruit — recent researchers discovered that limonoids are also responsible for a whole lot of sweet health benefits as well.

Citrus Fruit – Healthy Foods with Powerful Antioxidants

Free radicals are the by-products of your body’s energy metabolism process; they bang around your body causing damage to cells, tissues, and organs, contributing to early signs of aging as well as illness and disease.

But, while we can’t avoid the production of free radicals in our bodies, we can neutralize their damaging effects by eating a diet rich in antioxidant nutrients. Recently, researchers took note of two antioxidant nutrients from the citrus family: limonin and limonin glucoside. They found that the antioxidant properties of these two limonoid nutrients can reduce the risk of stroke, lower high blood pressure, and reduce inflammation.

Citrus Fruits Fight Cancer

Eating limonoid-rich healthy foods can help your body fight off cancer in three ways: they help to prevent cancer from developing; they slow the growth of existing cancer; and they kill existing cancer cells. Several studies have also shown that limonoids can help improve and prevent a wide variety of cancer types, such as pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, leukemia and breast cancers .

The influence limonoids exert on breast cancer is particularly impressive, as they have been found to impede the growth of cancerous cells in both estrogen-positive and estrogen-negative cancers. Most treatments are only able to tackle one specific breast cancer type. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed that not only were higher doses of limonoids safe and cancer fighting, but they also remained in the blood for a significant period of time, able to exert longer-lasting health-protecting effects.

Antibacterial Powers of Citrus Foods

Studies have shown that certain aspects of limonoids have powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial effects as well. In a study published in 2010, researchers found that limonoids inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria (E. coli), commonly found on certain foods and known to cause diarrhea, seizure, stroke, kidney damage or even death. Researchers are hopeful that this promising limonoid research could lead to a brand new therapy to combat strains of E.coli infections.

Orange You Convinced Yet?

Citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit, have all been found to be rich in powerful limonoid nutrients. Limonoids are found in the white material that surrounds the fruit and the peel, so be sure not to leave this precious stuff behind when enjoying a fresh, whole orange, or even when using the rinds.

Oranges and lemons are being treated with chemical fungicides and pesticides that cause cancer and thyroid problems

orangesWednesday, May 15, 2013 by: Talya Dagan

(NaturalNews) Pesticides and fungicides are sprayed onto orange and lemon shipments to so that they don't rot during long shipping and storage periods. The citrus exposed to these pesticides are marked on the boxes with a message something like this:

"Treated to maintain freshness in transit with one or more of the following: Imazalil, Orthophenylphenate, Thiabendazole. Coated with food-grade vegetable-, petroleum-, beeswax-, or shellac-based wax or resin, to maintain freshness."

What is Imazalil?

Used to prevent oranges and lemons from mold and fungus, Imazalil is produced in the United States and abroad. Imazalil is a fungicide and a known carcinogen. It is also a developmental and reproductive toxin. Imazalil is toxic to fish and the environment.

How much Imazalil fungicide is on an orange?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set exposure levels for Imazalil. The adult levels are between 1750 and 3500 units per day for a 154-pound male. The limits for 44-pound children are 50 units per day for a chronic (meaning continued) exposure, and 333 for a child in an acute intake (meaning at one time). The residue of this toxic chemical on oranges has been tested at between 8 ug in 3.5 ounces of orange to 79 ug for domestic oranges. For imported oranges, between 15 and 74 ug was found. Organic domestic oranges showed NO levels for this chemical and imported organic oranges were not tested.

How much orange exposed to pesticides is it safe to eat?

According to the statistics presented by the EPA and the United Stated Department of Agriculture Pesticide Data Program, the largest quantity of oranges that is safe for children to ingest in one day is 14 ounces. Amounts of toxins on an orange or lemon vary from fruit to fruit, and from supplier to supplier. If the domestic orange contains only 9 ug per 100 grams of orange, you will be safe eating more oranges, however, in testing over 700 samples of both American and imported oranges, the oranges contained toxin levels ranging from 9 to 79. To be safe, assume that the upper levels of toxins are on an orange.

To safely eat oranges without overdosing on the cancer--inducing toxin Imazalil, the USDA's Pesticide Data Program information is that 14 ounces of oranges could be above the toxicity threshold for a 44-pound child, if eaten at one time. For an adult, the amount of oranges is about 22 ounces. An orange weighs about 7 ounces. Most of the pesticides are on the skin. That being said, eating two oranges could cause a toxic overload of Imazalil for a child, and three oranges might be toxic to an adult.

How are the safe levels of exposure to pesticides and toxins set?

United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA) Pesticide Data Program (PDP) rates chemicals and pesticides based on a tolerable amount to be taken for long periods of time, which they call the chronic level, and also rates the acute dose, which means the amount that is tolerable for ingestion at one time. This is measured in units called PAD, which stands for Population Adjusted Dose. The Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) recognizes that children are more sensitive to toxins, so they mandated separate testing for them.

Citrus Fruit May Lower Risk Of Stroke

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a daily orange may keep strokes at bay. Analysis of 14 years of data from 70,000 women in the Nurse’s Health Study shows that eating more citrus fruit (oranges, grapefruits, tangerines and lemons) can reduce your chances of a stroke.

“Studies have shown higher fruit, vegetable and specifically vitamin C intake is associated with reduced stroke risk,” says Aedín Cassidy, Ph.D., the study’s lead author and professor of nutrition at Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, United Kingdom. “Flavonoids (compounds in fruits and vegetables) are thought to provide some of that protection through several mechanisms, including improved blood vessel function and an anti-inflammatory effect.”

In this analysis, the flavonoids came primarily from oranges and orange juice (82 percent) and grapefruit and grapefruit juice (14 percent). However, researchers recommended that consumers increase their citrus fruit intake, rather than juice, due to the high sugar content of commercial fruit juices.

The research was reported in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.
