With all of the attention surrounding diabetes these days, you’ve probably heard of a condition called metabolic syndrome—a collection of risk factors that are linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke. These risk factors include high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low HDL (“good”) cholesterol, raised fasting glucose levels and a waist circumference measurement of 35 inches or more (think “beer gut”). If you have three of these five risk factors, then you may have metabolic syndrome, which puts you at increased risk of more serious complications.

Insulin resistance is the cornerstone of metabolic syndrome. Your pancreas produces the hormone insulin, which is necessary for the absorption and utilization of sugar in your diet. However, when you have insulin resistance, your body doesn’t respond as accurately to insulin, which causes the pancreas to produce more insulin.

This is where the merry-go-round starts, because the more insulin you have in the bloodstream, the greater your risk for type 2 diabetes.

Along with insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction is a hallmark of metabolic syndrome. Endothelial dysfunction is characterized by narrowed blood vessels, inflammation and pro-thrombotic properties. In fact, it is one of the first signs of atherosclerosis and impending cardiovascular disease.

When the endothelial lining becomes damaged, NO production suffers, making all the blood vessels susceptible to inflammation, clotting and other negative effects.

While there’s little doubt that antioxidants play an important part in protecting the heart, a team of researchers recently examined the effect of one particular type of antioxidant—grape polyphenols—on the reduction of metabolic syndrome risk factors, especially the cardiovascular ones.2
Grapes contain numerous antioxidant polyphenols—anthocyanins, flavonols and resveratrol, to name a few. Resveratrol, in particular, has been shown to be extremely heart healthy by reducing LDL cholesterol and inflammation.3-4 As many wine lovers know, red wine is high in resveratrol, and when consumed in moderation (one to two glasses per day), has some impressive heart-protective properties.

Go for the GrapeBecause metabolic syndrome has so many different factors, no simple pharmaceutical solutions exist to treat it. The best solution doctors can offer is to adjust certain lifestyle factors like diet and exercise. This, of course, is sound advice.

Everyone should be eating a clean diet and exercising anyway, but those with metabolic syndrome could see dramatic changes in their condition with these two changes alone. Vitamin K2 and Natto

In the meantime, since nearly 100 percent of people don't get sufficient amounts of vitamin K2 from their diet to reap its health benefits, you can assume you need to bump up your vitamin K2 levels by modifying your diet or taking a high-quality supplement.

As for dietary sources, eating lots of green vegetables, especially kale, spinach, collard greens, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, will increase your vitamin K1 levels naturally. For vitamin K2, cheese and especially cheese curd is an excellent source. The starter ferment for both regular cheese and curd cheese contains bacteria -- lactococci and proprionic acids bacteria -- which both produce K2.

You can also obtain all the K2 you'll need (about 200 micrograms) by eating 15 grams of natto daily, which is half an ounce. It's a small amount and very inexpensive, but many Westerners do not enjoy the taste and texture.

If you don't care for the taste of natto, the next best thing is a high-quality K2 supplement. Remember you must always take your vitamin K supplement with fat since it is fat-soluble and won't be absorbed without it.

Although the exact dosing is yet to be determined, Dr. Vermeer recommends between 45 mcg and 185 mcg daily for adults. You must use caution on the higher doses if you take anticoagulants, but if you are generally healthy and not on these types of medications, I suggest 150 mcg daily.

Slipped disc — how to manage the pain

The key to a better quality of life when you suffer from a slipped disc is learning to manage the pain
At 25 years old, being diagnosed with a slipped disc was not part of Aini’s plan. Newly married and with a promising career in a Fortune 500 company, Aini and her family didn’t react too well to the news.
They were worried about how she would cope with the diagnosis and if she would be able to lead a normal life.
However, the doctor assured her that with proper information and education, her condition would be manageable.
Slipped disc, also known as a prolapsed intervertebral disc or herniated disc, occurs when one of the discs in the spine ruptures and the gel within leaks out.
A disc prolapse can happen at any part of the spine and when it occurs, pressure is exerted on the nerve closest to it. The lower back (lumbar region) is the most common area for a slipped disc to occur.
The pressure exerted on the lumbar nerve is what causes severe pain and tingling sensation, which often radiates or “shoots” down to the calf and foot.
WORSENING PAIN
Aini’s pain started in March, just three months after her wedding. The pain was localised on the right side of her lower back but she didn’t think too much of it and figured it would soon pass but, as the days went by, the pain worsened.
Her muscles became tensed, causing her to lean to her right side and she was unable to straighten or stand up straight.
She started to feel pain from her back travelling down to her right calf. Often the pain was excruciating and kept her awake at night.
She described it as “someone taking a knife and stabbing me over and over again on my legs. It drove me crazy and I couldn’t sleep. Exhausted and drained from the pain, I couldn’t go to work. “
The unbearable pain left her with no choice but to finally consult a doctor.
She visited doctors at two different clinics and both provided the same diagnosis — that it was nothing more than regular back pain caused by lifting heavy items. Both doctors prescribed painkillers, which didn’t ease her suffering.
When she was finally referred to consultant orthopaedic and spine surgeon Dr Ozlan Izma Muhamed Kamil in mid-April, she was diagnosed as having lumbar disc prolapse.
Even though Aini was mentally prepared for surgery, Dr Ozlan assured her it was not necessary at this stage — proper medication would be sufficient to treat the pain.
“I was told that I had to change everything in my life, from my car to the chair I sit on at work. I started to panic when I thought of all the adjustments that I would have to make in my life but, with Dr Ozlan’s guidance on pain management, my family and I gained a more positive outlook and in the end, I only had to make a few minor changes. Part of my pain management included being aware of how long I sit — I make it a point to take a walk around the office every hour so that I do not remain seated for too long, said Aini.
OTHER CONCERNS
Aini had another concern. Would her new condition affect her chances of getting pregnant?
Dr Ozlan said: “It is not advisable for her to get pregnant while on medication. However, her condition is not permanent and nerve pain from the slipped disc will go away. One major misconception is that people with this medical condition should take extra precautions and limit their physical activities.
“This is not true because with proper medication and light exercises, patients can go about their daily routines without problems.”

How Omega-3 and Turmeric May Preserve Your Ability to Walk After Spinal Cord Injury

 
 
 
Typically the result of a car crash, severe fall, physical violence or sports-related accident, a spinal cord injury (SCI) is devastating…and more often than not irreparable…damage to the spine.

There are approximately 200,000 cases of spinal cord injuries in the United States. It may surprise you to discover that men make up 80% of all diagnosed cases and the prognosis varies from case to case from mild to severe damage.

The most crippling of spinal cord injuries results in partial to complete paralysis. And the far-reaching effects of an SCI can impair breathing capabilities and gastrointestinal and urinary processes, and cause major depression.

The cost for lifelong care after a spinal cord injury can be as much as $3 million.

Christopher “Superman” Reeve is one of the most well-known and well-publicized cases of spinal cord injury in recent medical history.

When he was thrown from his horse in 1995 – shattering the top two vertebrae of his spinal column and leaving him paralyzed from the neck down – the world’s attention was drawn to a condition that impacts the lives of more than 12,000 people every year in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Reeve’s condition was classified as “Grade A” according to the established guidelines from the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA). He was not only completely paralyzed – he was unable to breathe on his own. For five years, his diagnosis remained the same and doctors doubted there would ever be improvement.

The “Man of Steel” Refused to Give Up Hope


He then participated in a program through the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. After three years of focused exercise that re-trained the atrophied nerves around his spinal column, Reeve was reclassified to “Grade C” on the ASIA scale due to improved neck, motor and sensory function.

Christopher Reeve died in 2004 from heart failure. What amazed his doctors was that his spinal cord injury and subsequent improvement was the first real evidence that damaged areas of the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) can regenerate…even years after injury.

Omega-3 and Turmeric: Powerful Preservers of Walking Ability


Steroid injections are the most commonly used method of treating spinal cord injuries. However there is a fine line between an effective dose and a harmful one. Serious side effects, such as blood clots, pneumonia and breathing-difficulties, have caused the FDA to delay approval of steroid use for spinal cord injuries.

A recent study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine and conducted by the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, highlighted the breakthroughs scientists made with rats suffering from spinal disorders.

Three groups of rats were fed different diets:
    1) One was given normal rat food.
    2) Another was given a diet high in fats and processed sugars.
    3) A third was given a diet rich in antioxidants with documented anti-inflammatory properties, specifically docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) – an omega-3 fatty acid – and curcumin (the compound that gives turmeric its yellow coloring).
The results from the third diet were astounding. DHA has been shown in other studies to repair cell membrane damage but scientists discovered that the healing capabilities of omega-3 fatty acids include the ability to protect nerves after an accident or injury and to prevent cell death.

This total cellular protection is crucial to successful nerve injury recovery.

Curcumin’s role in recovery includes relieving and reducing inflammation, thereby preventing further nerve damage and speeding recovery. Curcumin is such a potent antioxidant that it has been shown to rebuild brain cells and aid in stroke prevention.

Dr. Langston Holly, associate professor of neurosurgery at UCLA and lead investigator, stated, “While surgery can relieve the pressure and prevent further injury, it can’t repair damage to the cells and nerve fibers. We wanted to explore whether dietary supplementation could help the spinal cord heal itself.”

Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, professor of neurosurgery and co-author of the study, said, “DHA and curcumin appear to invoke several molecular mechanisms that preserved neurological function in the rats. This is an exciting first step toward understanding the role that diet plays in protecting the body from degenerative disease.”

A similar study analyzed just how omega-3 fatty acids protect against nerve damage. The study — conducted by a group of researchers led by Adina Michael-Titus, Professor of Neuroscience at Barts and The London Medical School and lead of the Neurotrauma and Neurodegeneration group in the Centre for Neuroscience and Trauma, Queen Mary, University of London — focused primarily on omega-3 fatty acids.

Researchers initially simulated injury in the mice and then followed up with a treatment plan of omega-3. The fatty acid slowed cell degeneration, protected against further damage, and aided in rapid recovery from sciatic nerve injury.
  
The human body does not naturally produce omega-3 – which is an essential nutrient – so you must get it through your diet.

Foods Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

  • Leafy greens – spinach, kale and grape leaves
  • Brightly colored fruits and vegetables – peppers, carrots, tomatoes and citrus
  • Spices – basil, chili pepper, cloves and mustard
  • Fatty fish – salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring
  • Seeds and nuts – sunflower seeds, almonds, pecans and walnuts

“These fatty acids could have beneficial effects in a number of neurological conditions. This new study suggests that they could also have a role in treating peripheral nerve injuries. Our research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids can protect damaged nerve cells, which is a critical first step in a successful neurological recovery,” said Dr. Michael-Titus.

There is much research still to be done but scientists around the world are excited about these initial breakthroughs.

Patients partially or completely paralyzed due to spinal cord injury could find hope for nerve regeneration in natural therapies – as simple as diet – where once there was none.
