A man in China has failed an on-the-spot breathalyser test after eating too much durian fruit.

Image captionThis much durian - "the world's stinkiest fruit" - made a Chinese police officer fail a breathalyser
According to Chinese video website Pear Video, an unnamed man in Rudong county, in the eastern province of Jiangsu, was pulled over by the police on 17 April for suspected drink-driving.
He failed his breathalyser test, but was filmed by police protesting: "I've just eaten durian fruit!"
A follow-up blood test proved that there was no alcohol in his system, putting the man in the clear.
But it also prompted local police to subsequently carry out tests themselves, to check the legitimacy of the man's claims.

A big stink

In a 29 April investigation, Pear Video showed a police officer being breathalysed after eating some of the stinky fruit, and confirmed that his alcohol level directly after eating durian was 36mg per 100ml.
The legal limit for blood alcohol concentration in China is 0.02% - roughly 20mg per 100ml.

Three minutes after taking the test, police officer Yu Pengxiang was retested and the breathalyser showed a negative result.
Pear Video subsequently warned users against eating the fruit while driving, along with other products that might show a positive result, including certain brands of mouthwash and lychee.

Waste of 'innocent people's time'

Pear Video's report has triggered thousands of comments on Chinese social media, with many surprised, but also concerned.
Some on the popular Sina Weibo microblog are calling on the police to apologise to the interrogated man. Others are asking for improvements in the carrying out of breathalyser tests.
"Do you have to waste innocent people's time, frighten them and then stick a needle in them to eliminate suspicion?" one user asks.
Some are also voicing incredulity that the driver could tolerate eating durian anyway in a confined space, given its notoriously pungent smell.
There are also complaints online that the police might be relying on outdated equipment, rather than trusting their noses.
This is not the first time that breathalysers have come under scrutiny for showing positive results for non-alcoholic products.
In January, an Australian lorry driver went viral with a video showing that eating a hot cross bun could generate a positive reading.

Durian Myths: The Truth About Durian and Alcohol, Cholesterol & More - Part 2

Are durians loaded with cholesterol? Get the answers and more from HealthXchange and SingHealth.

Durian Myths: The Truth About Durian and Alcohol, Cholesterol & More

DURIANS
are a highly prized fruit that must be eaten in moderation.

Durian myths debunked!

1. Durian is loaded with cholesterol

Not true. Durians have zero cholesterol. Cholesterol is found in foods containing saturated fats such as red meats, seafood and dairy products. Durians have heart-healthy monounsaturated fats which help to lower your levels of bad LDL cholesterol.

2. Mangosteen must be eaten with durian to reduce heatiness

According to conventional Chinese wisdom, a mangosteen, being a cooling fruit, will reduce the heatiness associated with durians. However, there is no scientific research to support this. The habit of eating durians and mangosteens together probably stems from the fact that the two fruits are harvested at about the same time.

3. Eating durian and drinking beer at the same time may kill you

There is no scientific evidence to show that this is a lethal combination. It is more likely to cause bloating, indigestion and discomfort as your liver has to work extra hard to metabolise both fats and sugars in the durians and the alcohol, especially if you have consumed both in excessive amounts.

4. Eating durian can boost your libido

The heatiness in the durian may cause your body temperature to rise, but this does not make the fruit an aphrodisiac.
Despite the myths associated with the durian, it remains a highly prized fruit.
Final message from our dieticians:
The durian is a highly nutritious fruit which, when eaten in moderation, will provide the body with many minerals, vitamins and good fats. Eating two to three seeds of durian at one sitting is sufficient, but because durians can become so addictive, people tend to eat more than they should.

Durians: 8 Myths and Facts About the King of Fruits

But feasting on this highly nutritious fruit will certainly not benefit your waistline. A durian can have anywhere from 885 calories to 1,500 calories depending on its size. Durians may be a very good source of nutrients, but they are also high in calories and carbohydrates and thus must be consumed with moderation.

Durian facts

1. Durian can cause weight gain

With an average 1 kg sized durian having close to 1,350 calories, eating one durian can rack up as much as 68 per cent per cent of the daily 2,000 calories recommended for an average adult! One seed durian (about 40 g) has 54 calories.

2. Durian is rich in nutrients

Durian is naturally rich in potassium, dietary fibre, iron, vitamin C, and vitamin B complex. The king of fruits is thus excellent for improving muscle strength and blood pressure, bowel movements and skin health. 4. Durian is an instant energiser

Because of their high carbohydrate content, durians can help replenish low energy levels quickly (in healthy individuals). The fruit’s high potassium content can also help reduce fatigue and relieve mental stress and anxiety.

How to Never be Sold a Fake Mao Shan Wang Musang King MSW 猫山王 Durian Again

Mao-Shan-Wang-Durian

There is no doubt that the Mao Shan Wang 猫山王 or Musang King is the most popular and also most prized of all durians now. (The Mao Shan Wang is named after Gua Musang town, the main fruit trading centre in Kelantan, Malaysia. The cultivar is originally from the town of Tanah Merah, also in Kelantan.)

Mao-Shan-Wang-Durian

The texture of thick Mao Shan Wang flesh is rich and creamy like toasted marshmallow. On the palate Mao Shan Wang flesh tastes slightly bitter with sweet notes. On the nose, its aroma is sweet and mildly pungent without being overpowering.

Mao-Shan-Wang-DurianMao-Shan-Wang-Durian

The Mao Shan Wang seed is flat and quite small.

Mao-Shan-Wang-Durian

Sometimes the waxy seed peeks out from folds in the slightly glowing yellow flesh. As you can see, the Mao Shan Wang flesh literary undrapes itself from the waxy seed.

While there is no question about the Mao Shan Wang's allure, identifying the real McCoy may sometimes be challenging.

This post aims to help us avoid fake Mao Shan Wang durians. Unfortunately, there is no 100% foolproof method against being sold a fake. We can, however, substantially improve our chances by learning more about the Mao Shan Wang.

Only the external identifying features are listed here as most durians are sold on an "once opened considered sold" basis unless it is obviously rotten or unripe.

To identify a real Mao Shan Wang, check that it has all the following five external features together. Other cultivars may have some but not all five features altogether.

Look out for these five external features in a single durian:

Mao-Shan-Wang-Durian

Mao Shan Wang thorns are like small pyramids with flat angular sides unlike some other durians with conical thorns.

Mao-Shan-Wang-Durian

The thorns converge at the base of the stem forming a bald brownish ring around it.

Mao-Shan-Wang-Durian

Mao-Shan-Wang-Durian

The Mao Shan Wang is mostly oval shaped like an egg or sometimes even a pear. Rarely, it is round like a bowling ball.

Mao-Shan-Wang-Durian

There is a characteristic brownish 5-arm "starfish" at the base of the Mao Shan Wang. The thin, longish arms warp the base of the durian and run up to the middle of the shell as if it is trying to hold it together tightly.

Mao-Shan-Wang-Durian

The "body" of the "starfish" is brownish in colour, flat and bald. It is not pointy or bulging and the thorns do not gather or converge here. In the Mao Shan Wang, the thorns at the base are parted away from the "bald patch".

Before asking the durian seller to open the durian, look out for these five external features in a single durian.

With these five external identifying features, hopefully we never have to suffer another fake Mao Shan Wang again :)
