"Safe" Ingredient Found in 6,000 Products ...

 Newsletter #254

"Safe" Ingredient Found in 6,000 Products
Can Lead to Cancer, Seizures,
Holes in Your Brain, and more
Enjoying any of 6,000 popular foods and beverages can lead to leukemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas… along with brain, kidney, liver and lung cancers. These products contain what I call the most dangerous single food additive on earth.

I'm basing that charge on the largest human study ever on the subject — based on over two million person-years worth of data. Keep reading and I'll identify this deadly chemical and give you the shocking new findings. . .

It's a safe guess that every American man, woman, and child has consumed aspartame at one time or another. More than 250 million people drink beverages containing this deadly chemical because they actually think it's a healthy choice!

The facts say otherwise: these people are boosting their cancer risk far beyond anything you'd imagine. It's proven by a new study released by Harvard and then almost immediately scrubbed from the Internet. It appears that powerful interests want to protect aspartame from any criticism.

The dreadful consequences of a "safe" food choice
This mega-study revealed some downright frightening results. As little as one diet soda a day leads to:
  • 42% higher leukemia risk (men and women)
  • 102% higher multiple myeloma risk (men only)
  • 31% higher non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk (men only)
Researchers analyzed data from the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study gathered over a 22-year period. It included 77,218 women and 47,810 men, for a total of 2,278,396 person-years of data. That certainly seems like enough data to give us meaningful results.

The study identified over this 22 year period:
  • 1,324 non-Hodgkin lymphomas,
  • 285 multiple myelomas, and
  • 339 cases of leukemia.
Aside from its sheer size (the largest aspartame study ever), this study was particularly thorough in its analysis of aspartame consumption. They evaluated dietary information every two years during the 22 year period, instead of at just one point in time.

And make no mistake… Americans consume a LOT of aspartame — 10.5 million pounds per year -- eighty-six percent of which is from diet soda.
Previous studies — slammed by critics —
were absolutely right
Several studies over a period of years found a link between aspartame consumption and cancer. But they were often criticized as too small, too short, or poorly constructed.

This study puts those doubts to rest.

And the results are not exactly surprising. But they are disturbing. Consider what we already new before this large-scale human study was released. . .

One previous rat study found that of 48 experimental rats, up to 67% of all female rats developed golf ball sized (or larger) tumors. And 21% of the males developed similar cancerous growths.

An Italian study connected aspartame intake to lymphomas, leukemia, and kidney cancer. This study confirmed aspartame as a carcinogen affecting multiple sites in both rats (males and females) and mice (males only).1
"The truth isn't sweet when it
comes to artificial sweeteners."
So screamed the headline of the Brigham and Women's Hospital (Harvard Medical School) press release about a link between aspartame and cancers, especially blood cancers. Then suddenly they got cold feet and scrubbed the story.

They also issued an "apology", stating that the data were "too weak to find a causal link".

None of this is too surprising. If it becomes established that aspartame causes cancer, it could be equivalent to the long-running scandals over tobacco or asbestos. Can you imagine the frenzy of litigation against food and beverage makers? The lawsuits will never end.
Don't ignore a 22-year study of 125,000+ people
Don't take a chance and ignore a large-scale, long-term study like this one that shows a link between aspartame and blood cancers.

The long-term aspect is critically important, because one of the tricks industry uses to hide product toxicity is short term tests. Short-term studies reveal nothing about long-term risks. Based solely on short-term trials, the industry can get away with claiming aspartame is one of the most studied food additives ever, with no health concerns. And it's all blessed by the FDA.

The reality is they never study the long-term effects, and those remain largely unknown till a product has been on the market for years — even decades — and the horrible consequences start showing up.

As proof of that, shortly after the release and retraction of the Harvard study, the beverage industry quickly stated that aspartame has been "deemed safe for decades by the world's leading toxicologists".

Unfortunately, most people don't know how short and poorly designed these industry-funded studies are, and the media choose not to tell you. So it's easy to be deceived.
Well-guarded secrets of a scary molecule
Aspartame is the name of the active ingredient in artificial sweeteners like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure.

It was accidentally discovered in 1965 when James Schlatter, chemist for the G. D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

It turned out his discovery is some 200 times sweeter than table sugar, and was approved for dry foods in 1981 and carbonated beverages in 1983. Now get this: Already in the 1960s aspartame was labeled a dangerous chemical and shown to create holes in brain tissue and to cause brain and nerve damage in developing fetuses. But wait, there's more: Researchers also knew it causes cancer, migraines, headaches, seizures, convulsions, and even retinal damage.

Anything this dangerous should have been removed from the market many years ago!

It actually was removed for a time after initial approval, when Dr. John Olney of the Washington School of Medicine discovered that aspartic acid — a major aspartame ingredient — caused holes in the brains of animal subjects.

There's a whole long and sordid story to be told about questionable lab practices, an FDA grand jury investigation of studies and more, but space prohibits its telling here and now. Interestingly, one of the government's prosecuting attorneys later joined the law firm representing Searle.
Don't trust the FDA to protect your health…
One can only guess about the political shenanigans involved in gaining approval for aspartame.

Finally, after the FDA received over 8,000 complaints about NutraSweet's side effects, a list of possible side effects was made public. Besides cancer and tumors, including brain cancer, aspartame is linked to a long laundry list of problems. I won't list them all here, but if you or a loved one suffer any symptoms or vexing health issues that won't resolve, it may be worth examining your diet for hidden aspartame.

Be forewarned, to this day the FDA still denies a cancer link. By the time they admit it (if ever), it will be too late for you.

Many chronic conditions are linked to aspartame:
  • Memory loss
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Dementia
  • Brain lesions
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • ALS
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Hearing loss and vision problems
We can hardly overstate the risk to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone with chronic health conditions. The book Prescription for Nutritional Healing by James and Phyllis Balch, lists aspartame as a "chemical poison". I'll show you in a moment just how true that is.

But first, the acute conditions in the following list may also be linked to aspartame. Take a look and see if any of these shoes fit your feet. . .
  • Hallucinations
  • Infertility
  • Diarrhea
  • Seizures
  • Depression
  • Migraine and headaches
  • Fatigue (blocks glucose from entering brain)
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea and abdominal pain
  • Sleep problems
  • Asthma and chest tightness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Weight gain
  • Rashes
Many of these conditions can also lead to early death.
Danger: brain damage ahead…
Aspartame is comprised of three chemicals — aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol.

Aspartic acid, an amino acid also called aspartate, is a neurotransmitter in your brain. Its big problems come when taken in free form (not bound to proteins).

Aspartate slowly destroys your neurons. Seventy-five percent of the neural cells in one area of your brain can be killed before you show any clinical symptoms of chronic illness. No wonder one key complaint from aspartame use is memory loss!

Dr. Russell Blaylock, leading neurologist and neurosurgery professor at the Medical University of Mississippi, published an entire book detailing the damage caused by aspartate. He uses 500 scientific references to show the link to serious chronic neurological disorders.

Phenylalanine is also an amino acid. Diet soda must carry a label warning people with phenylketonuria (PKU) not to drink it, because they cannot metabolize phenylalanine. But even those without PKU can experience a dangerous buildup of phenylalanine — leading to plummeting serotonin levels, depression, anxiety, and violent rages.

One especially alarming account of the effects of spiked phenylalanine levels was documented in the Wednesday Journal article, "An Aspartame Nightmare." John Cook drank six to eight diet drinks daily.

His symptoms began with memory loss and frequent headaches, and then moved to violent rages and severe mood swings. He didn't have PKU, yet a blood test showed a phenylalanine level of 80 mg/dl. (Safe levels of phenylalanine are under 10 mg/dl.) He also showed brain damage and abnormal brain function.

When he cut aspartame from his diet, his symptoms improved.

Methanol (aka wood alcohol) is a deadly poison. You may have heard of methanol as the poison that causes some "skid row" alcoholics to end up blind or dead.

Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in your body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin and a known carcinogen. It also causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication, and causes birth defects.

Even the EPA calls methanol "a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion." EPA recommends a limit of 7.8 mg/day, yet a one-liter beverage (or 3 cans of diet soda) contains 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users may consume up to 250 mg per day — a staggering 32 times the EPA limit.
More dangerous for people than for test animals
Due to your lack of a couple key enzymes that digest methanol — enzymes that lab animals have but you don't -- you're much more sensitive to its toxins than animals.

In humans, ,methanol converts to formaldehyde via an enzyme called ADH (alcohol dehydrogenase). This enzyme is more active in men than in women, which may explain the association between diet soda consumption and higher lymphoma and multiple myeloma in men, but not women.

Methanol absorption spikes when heated to 86 degrees. This may occur when a product is improperly stored (diet drinks sitting in hot sun), or as part of a food product such as Jello.

Another byproduct of aspartame is Diketopiperazine (DKP), implicated in brain tumors. Olney noted that DKP in the gut produces a powerful brain-tumor-causing chemical.

DKP is also implicated as a cause of uterine polyps and blood cholesterol by FDA toxicologist Dr. Jacqueline Verrett (in her testimony before the U.S. Senate).
Don't drink it or eat it,
no matter how safe they claim it is!
Don't believe the party line about aspartame safety. Avoid all products that contain it. I eat almost no processed or manufactured foods myself, and I don't drink sodas at all, regular or diet. If you give up aspartame-sweetened sodas, for heaven's sake don't go back to the ones with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. They're even worse.

And it's not all about sodas. Considering that aspartame is hidden in 6,000 products*, check out the footnote below for a list. Aspartame is in a great many consumer items you might not think of, such as children's Tylenol, certain vitamins, laxatives (Metamucil), pharmaceuticals**…

It pays to become an astute label reader and questioner!

Janet Starr Hull, who holds a doctorate in nutrition, says about the latest aspartame reports,
I will never accept the news of aspartame safety. I think it is a 'business' decision to discredit/discount the research results that aspartame DOES cause cancer, major nerve disorders, birth defects, and brain imbalances. Think about it… can you imagine the chaos that will occur when the truth of aspartame dangers is accredited…
Perhaps you're thinking it's worth the risk of cancer to keep your weight down? Don't count on it. There's evidence that aspartame causes people to gain weight, not lose it!
* Foods besides soda which may contain aspartame:
  • Mints, chewing gum, hard candies, soft candy chews
  • Flavored syrups for coffee, flavored water products
  • Frozen ice cream, ice cream novelties and frozen ice, ice cream toppings
  • Fruit spreads, jams/jellies
  • Jell-O and pudding
  • Iced tea powder and ready to drink, instant cocoa mix
  • Juice blends and drinks
  • Mousse
  • Syrups
  • Meal replacements, protein nutritional shakes, protein and nutritional bars,
  • "No sugar added" and "Sugar Free" — any food!
  • Veggie drinks
  • Yogurt — drinkable, fat free, sugar free

Keratin Hair Treatments Still Are Not Safe

June 10, 2013

4009.jpgIf you thought that the health risks associated with hair-smoothing keratin treatments were behind us, think again. Though the formulas used in salons today typically are less dangerous than the notorious Brazilian Blowout, a product whose risks came to light back in 2010, the current formulas are far from safe. Yet many woman are still ignorant of—or ignoring—the dangers. And even if you wouldn’t dream of using such a product yourself, you could still be at risk while someone else at your salon is getting her hair done. Here’s the straight talk…

Keratin is a protein that exists naturally in hair. The idea of a keratin salon treatment is to make hair smoother, sleeker, straighter and easier to style. For the treatment, a stylist applies a mixture of keratin and formaldehyde (a strong preservative) to the hair, which fills in the gaps in each hair shaft…then the stylist “seals” the mixture into the hair, lock by lock, using a very hot flat iron. At this high temperature, the liquid formaldehyde converts to gas vapors.

Yes, formaldehyde gas—swirling in a hot cloud all around your head. It sounds outrageous, like it ought to be illegal, doesn't it?

Whether inhaled or absorbed through the skin, formaldehyde is linked to a host of health problems. “Formaldehyde can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and lungs, as well as dizziness or lightheadedness. Even short-term exposure can cause asthma-like symptoms, while long-term exposure can cause permanent central nervous system damage and ongoing pulmonary problems. So far, the risk for cancer from long-term exposure is controversial, but there is good data to support a link between formaldehyde and the development of leukemia,” said Amy McMichael, MD, a professor of dermatology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Despite these risks, women who want to keep their hair sleek and straight tend to repeat the treatment every eight to 12 weeks or so, increasing their exposure.

The danger was first brought to public attention a few years ago when the FDA warned the Brazilian Blowout hair products company—the most well-known manufacturer, though far from the only one—to change its formulation and its product labels, which the agency described as “adulterated” and “misleading,” respectively. A public back-and-forth followed, with the company first insisting that the government’s lab tests were flawed and that the products were safe, then ultimately agreeing to change its products and labeling.

A THREAT BY ANY OTHER NAME

As the battle heated up and public awareness grew, salons began offering “no-formaldehyde” and “low-formaldehyde” treatments. But these are still problematic—and here’s why…

• Many of the supposedly formaldehyde-free hair-smoothing products contain ingredients that turn into formaldehyde when they break down during the heat application portion of the salon treatment! Ingredients that are synonyms for or that break down into formaldehyde include formalin, formic aldehyde, methanal, methylene glycol, methylene oxide, oxomethane and oxymethylene.
• Other products that claim to be formaldehyde-free were found, when tested by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), to contain significant levels of formaldehyde.
• The truly formaldehyde-free products don’t do much to smooth out the hair shafts, leaving many consumers dissatisfied.
• The low-formaldehyde products, while not as toxic as the original formulations, still carry health risks.
• Some salons still use high-formaldehyde products.

A UBIQUITOUS TOXIN

In all honesty, it’s not easy to avoid formaldehyde today. It’s used in a vast array of products, from plywood to carpeting to household cleaners. Clothing and most other textiles (towels, sheets, curtains) often are treated with formaldehyde to keep them looking fresh during shipping and warehousing. Formaldehyde also is used as an ingredient in many cosmetics, including soaps, lotions, even mascara and eye liner.

OSHA requires that employers take protective precautions for workers who are exposed to formaldehyde at concentrations of 0.1% or higher. Scary comparison: According to the FDA, the original Brazilian Blowout products contained nearly 12% formaldehyde.

But just because your salon uses a product called something other than Brazilian Blowout doesn’t make it safe. Other products that expose you to formaldehyde during treatment include Acai Professional Smoothing Solution, Acai Therapy, Advanced Brazilian Keratin Treatment, Brasil Cacau, Cadiveu, Chocolate Extreme De-Frizzing Treatment, Copomon/Coppola, Express Blow Out, Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy, Marcia Teixeira Advanced Brazilian Keratin Treatment, Marcia Teixeira Extreme De-Frizzing Treatment, Natural Keratin Smoothing Treatment, Professional Brazilian Blowout Solution, Soft Chocolate Gentle Smoothing Treatment and Soft Gentle Smoothing Treatment.

Bottom line: At this point, there is no effective salon-performed, keratin-based hair-smoothing product that can be considered completely safe, according to Dr. McMichael. If you have been receiving keratin treatments, it’s time to give serious consideration to stopping. Even if you have not noticed any negative effects as yet, it doesn’t mean that you’re immune—cumulative exposure only increases your risk.

If you patronize a salon that offers keratin treatments: Ask to be booked for a time when the salon can guarantee that no such treatment will be taking place…or at least insist on having your hair styled in a separate room to limit your exposure to the fumes.

Protect Yourself from these Five Toxins

How to Protect Yourself from these Five Pervasive Toxins

August 25, 2010 |63,098views

A growing body of research links five of the most commonly used chemicals in the world to a host of ailments, including cancer, sexual problems and behavioral issues. Here's what CNN suggests you can do about them:
  1. BPA — Bisphenol ABPA is used to make lightweight, clear, heat-resistant plastic. It's also used in epoxy resins.
A growing body of research suggests that BPA poses a potential cancer risk and may disrupt the extremely sensitive chemical signals in your body called the endocrine system.
To avoid it, buy stainless steel bottles and glass food storage containers. Switch to fresh or frozen vegetables instead of canned. If you buy plastic, check for the number on the bottom — if there is a number 7, assume the container contains BPA unless it explicitly says otherwise.
  2. PhthalatesThis family of chemicals softens plastics. Phthalates are considered endocrine disrupters. Research has also shown phthalates disrupt reproductive development. Avoid shampoos, conditioners and other personal care products that list "fragrance" as an ingredient.
  3. PFOA — Perfluorooctanoic acid (also called C8)PFOA is used to make Teflon and other nonstick and stain- or water-repellent products. PFOA causes cancer and developmental problems. You can reduce your potential exposure by using stainless steel or cast iron cookware. If you use nonstick cookware, do not overheat it — this releases toxic gas.
  4. FormaldehydeFormaldehyde is an ingredient in resins that act as a glue in the manufacture of pressed wood products. It is a known human carcinogen, causing cancers of the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract.
Buying furniture free from formaldehyde eliminates much of the exposure you face from the chemical. If you have wood products containing formaldehyde, increase ventilation, reduce humidity with air conditioning or dehumidifiers and keep your home cool.
  5. PBDEs — Polybrominated diphenyl ethersPBDEs are a group of chemicals used as flame retardants. Toxicology tests show PBDEs may damage your liver and kidneys and affect your brain and behavior. Try to find products without PBDE flame retardants and be sure to sweep up dust.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:
Thanks to the spoils of the industrial revolution, your body is now home to a growing cocktail of chemicals.

Intermingling with your red and white blood cells, your endocrine system, brain, tissues and other organs are chemicals used to make epoxy resins, non-stock cookware, flame-resistant upholstery and plastic -- clearly substances that have no business taking residence in a living, breathing creature such as yourself.
Your Body Probably Contains Over 200 Chemicals
A typical American comes in regular contact with 6,000 chemicals and an untold number of potentially toxic substances on a less frequent basis. There are about 75,000 chemicals regularly manufactured and imported by U.S. industries, so you could potentially be exposed to any number of them.

Given the vast amounts of chemicals in the environment, it's not too surprising that the CDC's Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals found an average of 212 chemicals in Americans' blood or urine.

Likewise, an Environmental Working Group study found that blood samples from newborns contained an average of 287 toxins, including mercury, fire retardants, pesticides, and Teflon chemicals, and this is from exposures they received before birth.

When it comes to the potentially hazardous chemicals you and your family are exposed to as you go about your daily lives, it can easily feel overwhelming. There are chemicals literally everywhere, but rather than feeling burdened by the thought I encourage you instead to focus on simple steps you can take to reduce your risk.

A good starting point, as CNN as suggested above, is to focus on avoiding some of the most pervasive, and most toxic, chemicals that are virtually guaranteed to be in your home right now.
Five Top Common Chemicals to Avoid …
The five chemicals listed by CNN are definitely worthy of eliminating from your life as much as possible, and given that they are among the most widely used chemicals around, doing so will make a serious positive impact on your chemical exposure.

They gave a great summary above, but I'll touch on them again briefly here:
  • BPA: BPA is one of the world's highest production-volume chemicals and is widely used in the production of plastics, canned foods and soda cans, food packaging, baby bottles and toys and more. The chemical can lead to heart disease, diabetes and liver problems in adults, and previous research has linked BPA to serious developmental and reproductive problems.
You can find 10 tips to minimize your BPA exposure here.
  • Phthalates: Phthalates, or "plasticizers," are a group of industrial chemicals used to make plastics like polyvinyl chloride (PVC) more flexible and resilient. They're also one of the most pervasive of the endocrine disrupters. These chemicals have increasingly become associated with changes in development of the male brain as well as with genital defects, metabolic abnormalities and reduced testosterone in babies and adults.
You can help reduce your exposure by using the tips in this past article.
  • PFOA: Teflon-coated cookware is the primary source of dangerous perfluorinated chemicals (PFOAs). Teflon pans quickly reach temperatures that cause the non-stick coating to begin breaking down, releasing toxins that have been linked to cancer, birth defects and thyroid disease into the air in your kitchen. I highly recommend you throw away this type of non-stick cookware immediately and replace it with either ceramic or glass. My personal choice is ceramic cookware, because it's very durable and easy to clean, and there's absolutely no risk of exposure to harmful chemicals.
  • Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde, most commonly known as embalming fluid, serves a number of purposes in manufactured products. It is actually frequently used in fabrics to give them a variety of "easy care properties" as well as being a common component of pressed-wood products. Formaldehyde has been shown to cause cancer in animals, and may cause cancer in humans. Other common adverse health effects include fatigue, skin rashes, and allergic reactions. Choosing all natural materials for your clothing and furniture can help cut down on your exposure.
  • PBDEs: These flame-retardant chemicals have been linked to altered thyroid levels, decreased fertility and numerous problems with development when exposure occurs in utero. PBDEs are commonly found in household items like upholstery and television and computer housings. Fortunately, several states now ban the use of PBDEs, so there is some progress toward reducing exposure. Another common source of PBDEs is your mattress, and since you can spend up to a third of your life in bed, this is a significant health concern. Mattress manufacturers are not required to label or disclose which chemicals their mattresses contain. Look for 100 percent wool, toxin-free mattresses.
Another viable option is to look for a mattress that uses a Kevlar, bullet-proof type of material in lieu of chemicals for fire-proofing. Stearns and Foster uses this process for their mattresses, which is sufficient to pass fire safety standards.
What Else Can You do to Reduce Unnecessary Chemical Exposure to Your Family?
Rather than compile an endless list of what you should avoid, it's far easier to focus on what you should do to lead a healthy lifestyle with as minimal a chemical exposure as possible:
  1. As much as possible, buy and eat organic produce and free-range, organic foods to reduce your exposure to pesticides and fertilizers.
  2. Rather than eating conventional or farm-raised fish, which are often heavily contaminated with PCBs and mercury, supplement with a high-quality purified krill oil, or eat fish that is wild-caught and lab tested for purity.
  3. Eat mostly raw, fresh foods, steering clear of processed, prepackaged foods of all kinds. This way you automatically avoid artificial food additives, including dangerous artificial sweeteners, food coloring and MSG.
  4. Store your food and beverages in glass rather than plastic, and avoid using plastic wrap and canned foods (which are often lined with BPA-containing liners).
  5. Have your tap water tested and, if contaminants are found, install an appropriate water filter on all your faucets (even those in your shower or bath). My personal favorite, and the one I personally use, is a high-quality reverse osmosis (RO) filter. You just need to add a few minerals back to the water, but RO reliably removes virtually every possible contaminant that could be in the water.
  6. Only use natural cleaning products in your home.
  7. Switch over to natural brands of toiletries such as shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants and cosmetics. The Environmental Working Group has a great safety guide to help you find personal care products that are free of phthalates and other potentially dangerous chemicals. I also offer one of the highest quality organic skin care lines, shampoo and conditioner, and body butter that are completely natural and safe.
  8. Avoid using artificial air fresheners, dryer sheets, fabric softeners or other synthetic fragrances.
  9. Replace your Teflon pots and pans with ceramic or glass cookware or a safe nonstick pan.
  10. When redoing your home, look for "green," toxin-free alternatives in lieu of regular paint and vinyl floor coverings.
  11. Replace your vinyl shower curtain with one made of fabric, or install a glass shower door.
It is important to make these positive and gradual steps toward decreasing your chemical risk through healthy lifestyle choices. While you make the switch to remove and reduce chemicals around your home, remember that one of the ways to significantly reduce your toxic load is to pay careful attention to what you eat.

Organically-grown, biodynamic whole foods are really the key to success here, and, as an added bonus, when you eat right, you're also optimizing your body's natural detoxification system, which can help eliminate toxins your body encounters from other sources.

Defend Your Health In A Toxic World

Today’s modern world bristles with health-robbing toxins. These harmful substances lurk in our food, water, air, household products and the environment.
Luckily, a few simple measures can save your health by helping you avoid these undesirables and boost your body’s natural detoxification defenses.

Toxic Burden

Studies over the past several years reveal that many people’s bodies are burdened with alarmingly high levels of many common, yet dangerous, toxins which are closely linked to numerous chronic illnesses, developmental conditions and behavioral problems. Some of the most prevalent toxins and pollutants found within and around us today include: bisphenol-A (BPA), phthalates, PFOA, formaldehyde, PDBEs, dioxins and heavy metals. By avoiding exposure to these all-too-common health menaces and taking regular measures to safely detoxify your body, home and surroundings, you can help protect your long-term health and possibly reduce environmental harm:
  • Bisphenol-A (BPA): A chemical found in plastic that may mimic estrogen in the body, disrupting endocrine system functions. Each year in the United States, nearly 90 million plastic bottles are produced and purchased, burdening both the environment and your health. BPA from these containers seeps into your beverages at high temperatures, especially in hot weather. To minimize damage to both the planet and your health, try glass or stainless steel bottles and containers, which can be safely re-used by everyone in the family.

  • Phthalates: Chemicals that bind other chemicals together and soften plastics. Sources include shampoo, perfumes, soaps, shower curtains and vinyl flooring. Phthalates also may harmfully disturb the endocrine system. Try to avoid using personal care products that contain fragrances which frequently contain phthalates.

  • Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA): Substance applied to the surfaces of non-stick products. It’s believed that heating non-stick pans and cookware releases PFOA vapors that you may inhale. PFOA has also been found in drinking water sources. Avoid non-stick cookware and opt for stainless steel or cast iron instead.

  • Formaldehyde: A glue resin found heavily in constructed wood products, such as particle board, plywood and fiberboard. This chemical is released in vapor through a process known as “off-gassing.” To reduce exposure, purchase exterior-grade pressed-wood products, which release much lower amounts of formaldehyde. Increasing ventilation in your home can also help reduce indoor air levels.

  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs): Flame retardants. Although they are in many different products, they get into our bodies primarily from the dust in our homes. Items like televisions and computers contain these chemicals and gradually expel them, letting them concentrate in dust. Breathing in or touching this dust is indeed dangerous, so make sure you regularly clean and dust your house.

  • Dioxins: Chemicals produced during combustion, in industrial settings as well as in common incineration and burn processes such as wood fires, backyard waste, diesel exhaust and others. Dioxins also form during bleach processes like paper pulp bleaching, as well as in the manufacture of chemical pesticide/herbicides. Your main route of exposure to dioxins is probably from dioxin-contaminated food. Dioxin accumulates in fat tissues and can increase the risk of cancer, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular illness, reproductive/developmental problems and other degenerative conditions.

  • Harmful Heavy Metals: Lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel and other metals are industrial byproducts. These are alarmingly present in a large number of everyday sources including food (especially mercury in seafood), medicines, water, bath and household products. Unlike beneficial metals such as copper, zinc and iron, harmful heavy metals are not processed by the body. They accumulate in soft tissues, where they eventually wreak havoc by damaging DNA and disrupting critical biological functions.

Detoxify

Safely detoxifying heavy metals and environmental toxins is critical for long-term health and wellness. As an integrative practitioner, I have witnessed many people improve their clinical symptoms and regain their health with a comprehensive, gentle and long-term detoxification program. My top recommendations for the safe removal of toxins and heavy metals have been well researched and shown to reduce toxic body burden without affecting essential minerals:
  • Modified Citrus Pectin: First used in Chernobyl to remove heavy metals and radioactive particles, modified citrus pectin is a gentle yet effective chelator of heavy metals and dangerous toxins from the circulation and digestive tract. It also provides a wide range of additional cellular health benefits.

  • Modified Alginates: These seaweed-derived alginates help to bind with heavy metals and environmental toxins and allow the body to safely excrete them.

  • Medicinal mushrooms: Medicinal mushrooms, in particular reishi and Cordyceps, can help protect against and repair some toxin-induced damages in the body, boost immunity, detoxify tissues, regulate healthy cell replication and boost overall health.

  • Antioxidants for Detoxification and Cellular Protection: High-powered antioxidants are crucial for protecting against toxin-related damage. Antioxidants protect DNA integrity, soothe inflammation from toxins, boost immunity, detoxify the body and promote overall health. Glutathione, one of nature’s most potent antioxidants, is produced by the body and is known to detoxify and protect against heavy metals and radioactive toxins. The best way to supplement glutathione is to take nutrients and herbs which act as precursors to glutathione. These include cilantro, garlic, milk thistle, dandelion, lipoic acid, N-Acetyl cysteine (NAC) and whey powder. I recommend taking a synergistic blend of glutathione precursors and other botanicals and nutrients specifically shown to remove heavy metals and toxins from deep within the body.
However you plan to detoxify from harmful pollutants, a fresh, healthy diet with a focus on organic fruits and vegetables and plenty of pure water and hydration should be your foundation. Don’t neglect this aspect of health. Otherwise, you leave your body virtually defenseless against a world saturated with toxic substances.

Hair-Product Alert: Beware of Formaldehyde

April 1, 2012

906.jpgThere are many toxic chemicals out there, but one in particular has made headlines because it has been found in hair salon straightening products—and that’s formaldehyde, the colorless gas that, at room temperature, emits a noxious odor. It is believed to cause cancer and allergies…to disrupt the immune system…and is linked to incidents of hair loss, nosebleeds and respiratory problems. As it turns out, formaldehyde also has been found in hair products used at home, such as shampoos and styling gels.

Good news/bad news: Formaldehyde in baby shampoo (yes, in products for babies) also made headlines last year—and for good reason. Last year, Johnson & Johnson announced that it was phasing out formaldehyde-releasing chemicals in its baby products.

So there’s one less product to worry about. But as an Environmental Working Group (EWG) report pointed out, when it examined 16 hair-straightening products used in beauty salons, 15 of them not only contained formaldehyde, they exceeded the safety limit set by the US government. The EWG, a consumer protection organization, is concerned that companies are using products that contain agents that turn into formaldehyde gas when exposed to the air and/or the heat of straightening irons. This might mean that even if the manufacturer didn’t add pure formaldehyde, formaldehyde is being created by a chemical reaction inside the bottle. When you open the bottle, the gas is released.

Speak to your hairdresser about the products used at your salon. Read the labels of the products you use at home. Formaldehyde-releasing preservative agents can be found in some shampoos and styling gels. They are called quaternium-15…dimethyl-dimethyl (DMDM) hydantoin…imidazolidinyl urea…diazolidinyl urea…and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, among others. To ensure that the hair products you use at home are safe, consider using products from companies such as Aubrey Organics, EcoColors and Modern Organic Products, which use nontoxic ingredients. They are available at some health-food stores and online.
