Pancreatic Cancer: Four sensations in the leg could be among ‘first clues’ signalling 'lethal' cancer

THE ILL-DEFINED nature of cancer symptoms can significantly delay referrals, so keeping well-informed of warning signs is crucial. According to recent findings, however, up to 70 percent of cancer patients are unaware of having an increased risk of blood clots. What's more, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is sometimes the first clue of pancreatic cancer, which is notoriously difficult to treat.

Cancer is a disease of the cells and organs that is fast-spreading by nature. One surefire way to treat the condition is to catch it during the initial stages of its development. But pancreatic cancer, due to its location deep inside the body, is notoriously difficult to pick up at the outset. Four clues in the legs could be among the first signs of the disease, according to health bodies.

Pancreatic cancer has a unique ability to induce blood into a hyper-coagulative state.

In other words, the blood of patients with pancreatic cancer has an abnormal tendency to coagulate, which confers a higher risk of blood clotting.

Therefore, a clot in the leg is sometimes among the first clues that someone has pancreatic cancer, according to the Cancer Society.

“This is called a deep vein thrombosis," explains the health body.

“Symptoms can include pain, swelling, redness and warmth in the affected leg. Sometimes, a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs, which might make it hard to breathe or cause chest pain."

A blood clot that travels to the lungs is medically known as pulmonary embolism or PE, which carries a high mortality risk.

“Still, having a blood clot does not usually mean that you have cancer. Most blood clots are caused by other things,” adds the Cancer Society.

It recently came to the attention of researchers that up to 70 percent of cancer patients are unaware they’re at a higher risk of DVT than the general population.

DON'T MISS:

The discovery emerged from the results of a survey carried out by the European Cancer Patient Coalition (ECPC), which assessed patient awareness and knowledge about cancer-associated DVT.

But aside from the fact that the condition is hard to pick up early, pancreatic cancer is also notoriously difficult to treat.

This makes pancreatic cancer the most lethal cancer in the body, according to Doctor Santhi Swaroop Vege, director of the pancreatic diseases group at Mayo Clinic.

In fact, the disease has an overall five-year survival rate of about seven percent, despite the marked medical advances effectuated in recent years.

The disease is typically characterised by non-specific symptoms, such as weight loss, and abdominal pain, making early detection difficult.

The location of the pancreas in the body also makes it difficult to biopsy or image.

Doctor Vege told News Network: “That’s one of the biggest problems we face. Usually, these people will have indigestion, and acid reflux, before finally somebody thinks of a CT scan."

Indeed, the condition tends to be found at advanced stages when abdominal pain or jaundice has resulted.

“At that time, it’s already late,” noted Dr Vege.
“If [the cancer] is localised to the pancreas and it is not involving the major structures, then the best treatment, of course, is resection - a big surgery.”
The best way to treat pancreatic cancer, however, is to remove the tumour completely before it spreads to neighbouring regions.
Men have a slightly raised risk of pancreatic cancer compared to women, which has partly been attributed to higher rates of smoking among men.

Soursop - Cancer-Fighting Super Fruit Stuns Scientists

A tropical fruit that’s been attracting serious attention as a cancer fighter once again proves that foods can be powerful medicine against cancer. A tropical fruit that’s been attracting serious attention as a cancer fighter once again proves that foods can be powerful medicine against cancer.

This fruit from the graviola plant has been used in folk medicine for more than a century, and contains more than 200 different natural phytochemicals that are beneficial in the human body.1

Among these phytochemicals are acetogenins, which scientists believe can annihilate even the most aggressive cancers, such as brain cancer.

The graviola plant is known by many names, graviola in Brazil, soursop in England and guanabana in Spain and in the U.S.

The tropical plant can grow 18 feet high. Its hanging fruit is lumpy and bulbous — downright ugly, some people think — yet has such a wonderful taste that one writer dubbed it the “frog prince of the plant kingdom.”2

So it’s no surprise that graviola fruit is used to make smoothies, fruit drinks, ice cream, candy and sherbets across Spain and Central and South America. But to cancer researchers, graviola is more than just a tasty treat.

Remarkable healing powers

Much of the research into graviola is centered on the actions of the acetogenins, which the graviola plant makes from long chain fatty acids.

Acetogenin molecules are shaped like microscopic kites and this feature, researchers believe, gives them the ability to interfere with the actions of mitochondria in cancer cells.

Remember, it’s the mitochondria in any cell that manufacture energy to allow the cell to survive. When acetogenins disrupt the energy supply in cancer cells, they can’t reproduce in large numbers to form a tumor or spread to other parts of the body.

Tests in Asia show that acetogenins in extracts from graviola can cause the mitochondrial membranes in cancer cells to leak and induce oxidative damage to the cell, causing it to die. If you imagine a cancer cell as a car, this process is similar to what would happen if you got a leak in the fuel line, gasoline spilled on the engine, and fire erupted.

While your local fire department can douse a car fire, the result of the oxidative fire to cancer cells is apoptosis – a self-destruct program built into cells that triggers death when they are severely compromised.3

Best of all, acetogenins appear to damage only cancer cells, leaving healthy cells alone.

Holding the line against brain cancer

One of the most deadly types of brain cancer involves astrocytes. Astrocytes are star-shaped cells that are critical for the healthy function of the blood-brain barrier—the natural barrier that keeps toxins out of brain tissue. Astrocytes are also essential for supplying nutrients to brain neurons and for repairing damaged neurons, as well as for normal cell signaling.

You can imagine that when astrocytes “go rogue” and become cancerous, the results are usually deadly. One such cancer, glioblastoma, often claims its victims within twelve to fifteen months.

That’s why the latest research on graviola is so exciting.

A study in Asia shows that extracts made from graviola can have epigenetic effects, or effects on genes, that may make brain cancers like glioblastoma more treatable.

In these studies, the researchers tested various extracts of graviola, from the fruit, leaves and seeds, finding that each could individually interfere with a cancer-defending gene called MUDENG, otherwise known as Mu-2-related death-inducing gene, or simply, MuD.

The actions of MuD in brain cancer cells is to help these malignant cells survive circumstances that might otherwise kill them off via apoptosis. But the Asian researchers found that the graviola extracts, particularly an extract made from the fruit of the plant, can disarm this cancer cell defense system and help finish off these tumor-forming cells.4

Graviola helps fight other cancers, too

Additional research demonstrates that graviola is useful against a number of other cancers to help patients:

  • Lower the risk of colon cancer. Research shows that an extract from graviola leaves acts as an antioxidant in the digestive tract and slows the formation of tumors in the colon.5
  • Prevent the growth and spread of pancreatic cancer. A study at the University of Nebraska shows that an extract made from graviola leaves and stems may kill pancreatic cancer cells by increasing their oxidative stress, cutting off their blood supply and acting in ways that spur the immune system to attack the malignancy.6
  • Slow the growth of prostate cancer. An investigation at the University of Colorado Denver shows that an extract made from graviola fruit pulp can reduce inflammation in the prostate that is linked to faster growth of cancer.7

Best of all, graviola is safe, unlike many conventional cancer treatments. In fact, graviola’s phytochemicals are so beneficial for good health that graviola fruit has been used to help nursing mothers increase milk production.

Powerful folk medicine
confirmed by modern science

Graviola has another remarkable benefit, according to research in Spain. Lab tests at the University of Seville show that an extract made from the leaves of the plant can reduce the mood swings, irritability and muscle aches of fibromyalgia.8

“The consumption of extract of Annonamuricata (graviola) leaves in pharmaceutical form and in the correct dosage can reduce the chronic pain, anxiety and depression that accompany this disease. This extract comes from the traditional preparation using decoction,” says researcher Ana MaríaQuilez, who is with the university’s Medicinal Plants Research group.

None of this is any surprise to folk medicine’s traditional healers. They’ve long used traditional decoctions of graviola to fight cancer, pain, fever, infection, inflammation, diarrhea and dysentery, and to heal wounds.

From what I’ve seen, the research into the health benefits of graviola – both for fighting cancer and healing other health problems – is just beginning. Already, a number of alternative doctors routinely prescribe graviola as part of their cancer-fighting protocol.

As scientists look more closely at how the phytochemicals in graviola help the body fight cancer, we hope their research will catch the attention of conventional oncologists who can then begin to see how powerful natural extracts from plants can be in treating cancer.

Five Reasons to Get More Magnesium

If you feel tired, weak, or nauseated… You might have a magnesium deficiency. And you’re definitely not alone. In fact, most people don’t have enough.1
 INH Research
You should be getting at least 400 mg of magnesium a day. But most of us don’t. Here are five ways getting more of it can help save your health.
And talk about dangerous… This powerful mineral keeps us healthy and prevents serious ailments. Things like hypertension and osteoporosis. But there’s even more to it than that.
Here are five reasons to get more magnesium.
1. Stops Anxiety: Magnesium supports your nervous system. Low levels cause a disruption. This can lead to anxiety and depression. Some experts even believe a magnesium deficiency is a direct cause of depression…2 And about half of the people diagnosed with depression also have anxiety.
Most doctors throw dangerous drugs—like benzodiazepines—at people with anxiety or depression. But just three months of use can raise your Alzheimer’s risk by 51% (among other dangers). Yet numerous studies show that magnesium eased depression and anxiety where these drugs failed. Without any side effects.3
2. Eases Stress: It doesn’t just support your nervous system. Magnesium stops cortisol levels from getting too high. It also helps your body produce melatonin which makes it easier to relax and fall asleep.4 Magnesium may help you fight headaches and fatigue. These are two of the most common signs of stress.
When you’re under stress, your body uses up magnesium faster.5 The result? Even more stress. It can also steal this mineral away from your bones and heart. This is why getting more magnesium from your diet alone may not be enough.
3. Prevents Diabetes: Magnesium can help keep your glucose levels under control. Just look at pistachios. They’re rich in magnesium. One study revealed eating 100 pistachios a day helped lower blood sugar levels by 78%.6
Another study found high magnesium intake cuts risks of diabetes by 33%.7 It can also reduce insulin sensitivity. Diabetics who took 365 mg a day significantly lowered insulin resistance after six months.8
4. Fights Cancer: Magnesium helps lower your colorectal cancer risk. About 95% of cases are adenocarcinomas. They begin with a tumor growth. Eventually, these growths can turn cancerous. Yet every 100 mg of magnesium you add to your diet each day lowers your risk of a growth ever developing by 13%. And if you already have a growth, you can reduce the odds of it becoming cancerous by 12%.
Magnesium may also help you avoid pancreatic cancer. One study found just two handfuls of magnesium-rich nuts a week can reduce your risk by 35%.
5. Keeps Telomeres Long: It’s the key to looking younger and living longer… Telomerase is the enzyme that controls the length of your telomeres. Without enough, you may age even faster. And this enzyme depends on magnesium. The mineral helps replicate and stabilize DNA.9
This might be the reason why people die of a magnesium deficiency… Researchers found low levels of magnesium increases death risk by 85%.10 Not getting enough of this mineral could kill you in as little as 10 years.
A magnesium-rich diet contains about 400 mg a day. This might sound like a lot. But it’s not as hard as it seems. Salads are a great start. Try spinach, chopped almonds, avocados, and shrimp. One square of organic dark chocolate contains 95 mg of magnesium.11
You can also find a magnesium supplement. Just make sure you read the label before purchasing. Look for one that gives you at least 200 mg per serving of natural magnesium.

Woman Beats Cancer With Curcumin

Dieneke Ferguson was dying. She was losing her four-year battle with the blood cancer myeloma.
INH Research
Despite three grueling rounds of chemotherapy and four stem cell transplants, the cancer was spreading throughout her body.1
She knew her death would be painful. She faced infections, unstoppable internal bleeding, blood clots, and kidney failure.2
So Ferguson decided to chuck conventional medicine. It hadn’t helped her anyway. She wanted to try a natural cure before it was too late.
She had read on the internet about the cancer-fighting properties of the spice turmeric. She stopped all mainstream medical treatments and began taking 8 grams of curcumin—the active compound in turmeric—each day.
Today, over five years later, she is healthy and leading a normal life. Astounded doctors wrote about her case in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).
Dieneke Ferguson
Dieneke Ferguson, 67, at the Olympics in Brazil.
She felt so good that she traveled from her home in north London to the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, where she carried the Olympic torch.3
Ferguson, 67, says, “I hope my story will lead to more people finding out about the amazing health benefits of curcumin.”4

Doctors: Curcumin Saved Her Life

Her doctors are from Barts Health NHS Trust, the second largest cancer center in London. They wrote in their journal article on Ferguson: “The fact that our patient, who had advanced stage disease and was effectively salvaged while exclusively on curcumin, suggests a potential anti-myeloma effect of curcumin.
“She continues to take daily curcumin and remains in a very satisfactory condition with good quality of life. This case provides further evidence of the potential benefit for curcumin in myeloma.”5

‘A Very Potent Natural Medicine’

Ferguson was diagnosed with myeloma in 2007. In 2011, she stopped her grueling medical regimen and turned to curcumin.
By 2012, tests showed that her cancer was dormant. She no longer had any active cancer-causing cells.
It is estimated that 12,590 Americans (6,660 men and 5,930 women) will die from myeloma this year.6
But researchers say that curcumin might save some of these patients.
Turmeric, the spice from which it is derived, has been used in India as a medicine for thousands of years. It is also a staple of Indian cooking and an ingredient in curry dishes. It is ground from the root of the Curcuma longa plant.7
People in India have far lower rates of cancer compared to Americans. Depending on the type of cancer, the rate can be anywhere from eight to 17 times greater for the U.S. population.
Dr. Ajay Goel is one of the world’s leading researchers in curcumin’s health effects. He is director of the Center for Translational Genomics and Oncology at Baylor University Medical Center.
Dr. Goel has witnessed curcumin’s cancer-fighting power both in the lab and in patients. He states flatly that curcumin has “a very strong anticancer effect.”
While the mechanism behind curcumin’s anticancer effect is not entirely understood, Dr. Goel says it appears curcumin interferes with the ability of cancer cells to divide uncontrollably.

Studies Show Curcumin Stops Many Types of Cancer

Over the past 10 years, studies have found strong evidence that curcumin stops many different types of cancer:
  • A Chinese study at Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital in 2012 found that curcumin induces cell death in triple negative breast cancer. This is considered the most aggressive form of breast cancer.
  • UCLA researchers found in 2011 that curcumin activates cancer-fighting enzymes in patients with head and neck cancers.
  • A 2013 study at the University of North Texas Health Science Center found that curcumin suppresses pancreatic cancer tumor growth.
  • A 2006 study published in the journal Neuroscience Letters found that curcumin induces cell death in glioblastoma (brain cancer) cells.8
So why do drug companies and most mainstream doctors ignore curcumin?
It’s because compared to cancer drugs, there is little profit in curcumin supplements. Cancer medications often cost patients hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Curcumin comes from a natural spice that can’t be patented or sold exclusively. It’s abundant and inexpensive.

Take the Right Kind of Curcumin

Curcumin alone has poor bioavailability. It needs fat to be absorbed by the body.
That’s why Dr. Goel recommends a form called BCM-95. It includes natural oils from the turmeric plant that help your body metabolize curcumin. BCM-95 is widely available at health food stores and online.
Although curcumin is generally safe, you should consult your physician before taking it. People taking blood thinners such as Coumadin (warfarin) should exercise some caution. Curcumin is not a blood thinner itself, but it can increase the effect of Coumadin and similar drugs.

Turmeric - This Spice Stops Cancer, Study Finds

Prostate cancer is so common in the U.S. that screening is a standard part of men’s checkups. In India, prostate cancer is so rare that it’s not even a concern.
American men get 23 times more prostate cancer than men in India.
by Garry Messick
The story is similar for breast cancer. American women get five times more breast cancer than women in India.[1]
Here’s how the U.S. stacks up to India regarding other cancers:[2]
  • 17 times more lung cancer
  • 14 times more melanoma
  • 12 times more kidney cancer
  • 11 times more colon cancer
  • 9 times more endometrial cancer
  • 8 times more bladder cancer
Scientists believe they’ve discovered India’s anti-cancer secret: turmeric, the yellow powder used in curry dishes.
It is a staple food in the country. People in many parts of India eat it in every meal.
Now, new research shows how turmeric and curcumin, its active ingredient, stop cancer on a molecular level.
The study comes from Japan’s Nara Institute of Science and Technology. The research team looked at a molecule called pentagamavumon-1 (PGV-1). PGV-1 is very similar to a molecule found in curcumin.[3]
The study found that PGV-1 suppresses enzymes that protect cancer cells, causing the cells to die.
The curcumin-derived molecule was effective against a wide range of cancers.
Investigators implanted human cancer cells in mice. When injected with PGV-1, the rodents’ cancer was entirely destroyed.
Professor Jun-ya Kato lead the study. He said that considering the stunning effectiveness and “low amounts of side effects,” PGV-1 should be used to treat cancer.
Previous studies provide strong evidence that curcumin is powerful medicine against cancer:
  • UCLA researchers found in 2011 that curcumin activates cancer-fighting enzymes in patients with head and neck cancers.[4]
  • A 2013 study at the University of North Texas Health Science Center found that curcumin suppresses pancreatic cancer tumors.[5]
  • A 2006 study published in the journal Neuroscience Letters found that curcumin induces cell death in glioblastoma (brain cancer) cells.[6]
  • A Chinese study showed that curcumin makes stomach cancer less resistant to chemotherapy.[7]
  • A study at MD Anderson Cancer Center showed that curcumin slowed the progression of multiple myeloma (blood cancer).[8]
With all this evidence (and this is by no means a complete list) you may be wondering why curcumin isn’t widely prescribed for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Curcumin: India’s Anti-Cancer Secret

People in India get curcumin by eating turmeric at almost every meal. Most Americans are not willing to do this. That’s why, for most of us, curcumin supplements are the best option for cancer prevention.
Curcumin is safe for just about everyone. However, people taking blood thinners such as Coumadin (warfarin) should consult their doctor. Curcumin can increase the effect of Coumadin and other similar drugs.
Curcumin by itself is not easily absorbed by the body. Fat increases bioavailability. So taking curcumin with a meal that includes fat improves absorption.
In the war on cancer, mainstream medicine’s main weapons are surgery, chemo, and radiation. They often do more harm than good.
India clearly has a better answer…a safe, natural way to stop one of our deadliest health problems.
