Inflammation Causes Heart Disease, Experts Say

Today the number of Americans dying of heart disease, the number one cause of death, is higher than health experts predicted it would be.  4 out of 10 Americans suffer from a heart-related health problem, and that number is expected to get even worse.  In addition to the lives lost, the cost of treating heart disease is expected to reach one trillion dollars a year within the next 15 years.

02-23-2017

A growing number of doctors believe the root cause of heart disease is inflammation in our bodies, brought on by eating too much sugar and bread.  Cardiologist Stephen Sinatra is on of those physicians who blame an inflammatory diet on the skyrocketing rates of deadly heart disease.
Sinatra says to reduce inflammation, stay away from sugar and processed grains such as enriched flour, corn and rice found in bread, bagels, pasta, pizza dough, tortillas, muffins and cereal.  He says as far as our health is concerned, these refined grains are very similar to sugar because our body responds to them in the same way.
"Sugar is your foe. It's the villan. Sugar is the enemy," he says.
There are many types of sugar.  Many of them end with "-ose." Sinatra says one of the worst is high fructose corn syrup, which food manufacturers began adding to soda and thousands of other foods and drinks in the past few decades, corresponding with the dramatic rise in heart disease, as well as obesity and diabetes.
Nutritionist J.J. Virgin points out that was also the same time the low-fat craze kicked-in.  That caused millions of Americans to replace fat with bread and sugar.
"When we started to pull the fat out of products, we either add, or are left with, sugar," she explained, "If you look at a lot of the dairy products, especially like cream cheese, we'll go to the light cream cheeses, and they actually added sugar in."
In fact, some fat-free salad dressings are one-third sugar!  Doctors advise checking nutrition facts labels on products, and only choose foods with no more than 2 grams of sugar per serving.
When Dallas resident John Speanburg started following his doctor's recommendation to cut-back on sugar, Speanburg was surprised to discover many of the foods he thought were healthy actually containd too much sugar.
"I love yogurt," he said, "But when you start realizing there's 9 grams of sugar in yogurt, I cut out yogurt."
When it comes to fruit, health experts say stick to the ones that are unprocessed, fresh or frozen, preferably berries, because they are lowest in sugar.  However, stay away from processed fruit products like juices, jellies and snacks.  They often contain super-concentrated natural sugar, fructose, accompanied by the misleading, "no sugar added" claim on the package.
"There are easy ways to say 'no sugar added' and still put it in there.," she explained, "Apple juice concentrate's the worst thing you can possibly have. Apple juice concentrate's got more fructose than high fructose corn syrup does."
So to prevent heart disease, America's number one killer that's still on the rise, doctors say reduce inflammation by avoiding processed foods and drinks, and instead, embracing foods in their natural state, also known as "whole" foods.  Especially load-up on a wide variety of colorful vegetables.  Also choose healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil, avocados and raw nuts.  When it comes to beverages, health experts say just drink plain water, unsweetened coffee or unsweetened tea.

Obamacare vs. American Health Care Act: What's in and What's Out

Republicans unveiled their highly anticipated American Health Care Act, the plan designed to replace Obamacare.  While there are some stark differences between it and Obamacare, many Republicans say it's not different enough, even dubbing the new plan as "Obamacare Light" and vowing to release a different replacement bill.

GOP Infighting
The main objection dissenting Republicans have with the new legislation is that, like Obamacare, they believe there is still too much government involvement in the new plan.  Despite these GOP grumblings, Speaker Paul Ryan says the American Health Care Act will get the 216 votes in the House needed for its passage.
Pricetag Unknown
Although the details of the plan are now released to the public, arguably the most important detail, the cost, is missing.  That won't be known until the Congressional Budget Office scores it, which could be a game changer.  That CBO score is expected to be released next week.
Things That Stay
The most popular elements of Obamacare remain in the American Health Care Act.
1. Pre-existing conditions are covered Insurers must offer health insurance to all people, even if they are very sick.
2. Kids stay on parents insurance until age 26
3. Ban on annual and lifetime limits
4. Medicaid Expansion Obamacare allowed for millions more low income people to be covered by Medicaid.  The new plan keeps that provision...for now.  In 2020 and enrollment freeze will take effect.
Things That Go
1. Individual mandate This is arguably the most objectionable aspect of Obamacare to the majority of opponents.  It states that an individual citizen must, under law, obtain health care insurance or face a fine. However, although the individual mandate is eradicated under AHCA, the same idea exists.  The new legislation states that if an insured person decides to discontinue their policy for longer than two months, when they start back up again, they're faced with a whopping 30% premium surcharge for an entire year.
2. Paying for costly insurance benefits you don't want  People purchasing insurance will no longer be forced to buy expensive plans that mandate certain coverage items, such as maternity care, if they don't want them.  Likewise, insurers can charge less for plans that offer fewer benefits than more expensive plans.

Other differences
The AHCA places more emphasis on age, Obamacare was more about income. Both plans offer tax credits to buy insurance, but Obamacare's were based on income, with poor people getting more help. The AHCA gives more help to people as they get older.

Starving Cancer: Ketogenic Diet a Key to Recovery

Many people are frustrated with today's cancer treatments. They are expensive, painful and often just don't work.
However, there is a new cancer treatment that is free, has virtually no side effects, and can be used in conjunction with other cancer treatments.

It involves cutting out carbohydrates, beginning with the worst carb of all - sugar.
Killing Cancer
Dr. Fred Hatfield is an impressive guy: a power-lifting champion, author of dozens of books, a millionaire businessman with a beautiful wife. But he'll tell you his greatest accomplishment is killing his cancer just in the nick of time.
"The doctors gave me three months to live because of widespread metastatic cancer in my skeletal structure," he recalled. "Three months, three different doctors told me that same thing."
His wife Gloria remembers it well.
"It's a horrible, horrible feeling to have someone tell you that the person you love only has three months to live and you're not going to be with him any more," she said.
While Hatfield was preparing to die, he heard about an anti-cancer diet, also known as metabolic therapy. With nothing to lose, he gave it a try and was shocked when it actually worked.
"The cancer was gone!" he exclaimed. "Completely. To this day there's no trace of it. And it's been over a year."
Starving Bad Cells
Although it wasn't easy, Hatfield stopped eating carbohydrates, which turn into glucose inside your body. Cancer cells love glucose and need it so badly, that if you stop giving it to them, they die.
"It just absolutely amazes me that medical science is just now finding this out," he said.
Hatfield's cancer recovery, however, was not a surprise to Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, who researches metabolic therapy. When he and his team of scientists at the University of South Florida removed carbohydrates from the diets of lab mice, the mice survived highly aggressive metastatic cancer even better than when they were treated with chemotherapy.
"We have dramatically increased survival with metabolic therapy," he said. "So we think it's important to get this information out."
It's not just lab mice. Dr. D'Agostino has also seen similar success in people - lots of them.
"I've been in correspondence with a number of people," he said. "At least a dozen over the last year-and-a-half to two years, and all of them are still alive, despite the odds. So this is very encouraging."
The Ketogenic Diet
All cells, including cancer cells, are fueled by glucose. But if you deprive them of glucose, they switch to the alternate fuel, ketone bodies.
Except cancer cells. A defect prevents them from making the switch to using ketone bodies as fuel and therefore, cancer cells can only survive on glucose. All other cells can use either glucose or ketone bodies.
"Your normal cells have the metabolic flexibility to adapt from using glucose to using ketone bodies. But cancer cells lack this metabolic flexibility. So we can exploit that," Dr. D'Agostino explained.
People like Hatfield, who want to deprive their cells of glucose and fuel them with ketone bodies instead, eat what's known as a ketogenic diet. It consists of almost zero carbohydrates, but lots of natural proteins and fats.
Gloria said the food on the ketogenic diet is in every grocery store and is pretty easy to prepare.
"You can go online and there's cook books," she said, "It's clean eating. Just very clean eating, none of the sugars, the salts, the trash food."
"Natural" proteins are ones that are in their original form. On the other hand, "processed" meats, like cold cuts and hot dogs, are off-limits because often carbohydrates have been added to them.
Similarly, "natural" fats are whole foods, like olive oil, avocados, and nuts. Stay away from "trans" fats, such as shortening or margarine, any oil that is hydrogenated. Trans fats are man-made.
Safe & Healthy
Sometimes people are afraid to try the ketogenic diet because they think eating fat like this is bad for your heart. But more doctors say as long as it's natural, fat is good for you, even saturated fat like coconut oil and butter.
"Is cholesterol the major cause of heart disease?" cardiologist Dr. Stephen Sinatra asked. "Absolutely not."
In his book, The Great Cholesterol Myth, Dr. Sinatra said the real cause of heart disease is inflammation, which comes from eating too many carbohydrates.
"We need to coach our patients and empower our patients about the dangers of sugar," he said. "Unfortunately, they're not hearing that. They're hearing the converse, the dangers of fat. Fat is healthy for you, as long as you avoid trans fats."
So by cutting back on carbohydrates and eating natural fats and proteins, you could improve your heart health and even wipe out cancer.
