Cardiac arrest resuscitation drug has needlessly brain-damaged thousands


The main drug used to resuscitate cardiac arrest victims has needlessly left thousands of people with brain damage, according to a major new trial.

Adrenaline, which paramedics inject when CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and electric shocks are failing to work, barely improves the chances of living but nearly doubles serious neurological harm among those who do survive.
Scientists believe it may damage the function of blood vessels in the brain, leaving patients in a vegetative state.
Either that or adrenaline causes damage because the heart can survive without oxygen for longer than the brain, meaning that although it can be restarted the brain is likely to be permanently impaired.
The drug is given to around eight in ten of the 30,000 people who suffer a cardiac arrest - when the heart stops beating - outside hospital every year in the UK, of whom only 10 per cent survive.
The findings of the study by the University of Warwick means health leaders may ban ambulance crews from using it.
The authors said the results further highlighted the importance of CPR and defibrillation skills among the public.
Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the study involved 8,000 patients across five ambulance areas in England between 2014 and 2017.
Paramedics attending a cardiac arrest victim administered either an adrenaline shot or a placebo injection.
Of the 128 patients who were given adrenaline and survived, 40 - 30.1 per cent - had severe brain damage, compared with 17 of the 91 survivors - 18.7 per cent - who were given a placebo.
Professor Gavin Perkins, an expert in critical care medicine at Warwick, said: “What we’ve shown is that adrenaline can restart the heart but it’s no good for the brain.”
Previous research indicates that for every minute a cardiac arrest victim goes without treatment, their chances of survival drop by 10 per cent.
Paramedics will typically make three attempts to restart the heart using a defibrillator before injecting adrenaline, a process that takes around six to eight minutes.
Professor Jerry Nolan, from the Royal United Hospital Bath, who co-authored the paper, said it “highlights the critical importance of the community respond to cardiac arrest”.
“Unlike adrenaline, members of the public can make a much bigger difference to survival through learning how to recognise cardiac arrest, perform CPR and deliver an electric shock with a defibrillator,” he said.

Compelling evidence suggests exercise is an important component of cancer prevention and care; slashing your risk of developing cancer, improving your chances of successful recuperation, and diminishing your risk of cancer recurrence.
A pattern revealed in these studies is that the longer you exercise, the more pronounced the benefits. Studies show that both men and women who exercise during their early years have a lower risk of cancer later in life.
But like most things in life, exercise must also be done in moderation and be balanced. There is a sweet spot and excessive exercise can cause its own set of issues, but most in the U.S. are far from being at risk for this problem.
According to a 2003 paper1 published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise,"more than 100 epidemiologic studies on the role of physical activity and cancer prevention have been published."
The authors note that:
"The data are clear in showing that physically active men and women have about a 30 to 40 percent reduction in the risk of developing colon cancer, compared with inactive persons …
With regard to breast cancer, there is reasonably clear evidence that physically active women have about a 20 to 30 percent reduction in risk, compared with inactive women.
It also appears that 30 to 60 min.· of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity is needed to decrease the risk of breast cancer, and that there is likely a dose-response relation."

Adrenaline-Dependent Immune Cells Shrink Tumors

Most recently, research2,3,4 published in Cell Metabolism showed that active mice experienced a 50 percent reduction in tumor growth compared to inactive mice. The mechanism behind this rather remarkable occurrence is thought to be related to the rush of adrenaline that occurs during high intensity exercise.
The adrenaline helps circulate natural killer (NK) immune cells into tumors in the lung, liver, and skin, where they go to work to kill off and eliminate the cancerous cells.
To test this theory, the researchers injected mice with adrenaline. As predicted, they found that this caused NK cells to move into the bloodstream, and when a tumor was present, the NK cells would infiltrate it.
Then, to confirm the link between NK cells and tumor shrinkage, they used specially bred mice that do not have NK cells. In these mice, exercise had no effect on the tumors.
Blocking the flow of adrenaline had the same effect — the tumors remained, even when the mice exercised. As reported by Medical News Today:5
“The link between adrenaline-dependent mobilization of NK cells and tumor infiltration was identified as the immune signaling molecule, IL-6.Muscle tissue is known to release IL-6 during exercise.
What surprised the researchers was that adrenaline specifically called for IL-6 sensitive NK cells, and that the IL-6 molecules help to guide the immune cells to the tumors.” [Emphasis mine]

Exercise Is Potent Cancer Prevention

While the exact risk reduction varies from study to study, the literature consistently show that exercise helps reduce your risk of a variety of different cancers, and often to a significant degree.
JAMA Oncology, 20156,7Men who stayed fit in middle age had a 55 percent lower risk of lung cancer and a 44 percent lower risk of bowel cancer after the age of 65.

High levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) in middle age also helped the men survive cancer, reducing their risk of dying from lung, bowel and prostate cancer by nearly one-third (32 percent).

Those who were active as teens and kept up their exercise habit as adults had a 20 percent lower risk of death from all causes.

Exercise Improves Cancer Survival Rates and Cuts Recurrence



Should you end up with cancer, don’t fall for the old myth that rest is the best medicine. On the contrary, exercise has been shown to significantly boost your chances of recovery and survival.
For example, a 2005 Harvard study19 found that breast cancer patients who exercised moderately for three to five hours a week lowered their odds of dying from cancer by about half, compared to sedentary patients. In fact, any amount of weekly exercise increased a patient's odds of surviving breast cancer to some degree, and this benefit remained constant regardless of whether women were diagnosed early on or after their cancer had spread.
Exercise has also been shown to minimize the side effects of conventional cancer therapy, and improve cancer patients’ quality of life.
A recent analysis20,21 of 16 studies found that across the board, cancer patients assigned to an exercise program consistently report significantly better quality of life compared to those in the non-exercising control groups, including higher self-esteem and physical functioning, less fatigue, reduced length of hospital stays, and fewer doctor’s visits.
Some cancer organizations now promote exercise as part of standard cancer care, although this information has yet to fully filter down into general oncology. Two examples of organizations that promote exercise for cancer patients are the Macmillan Cancer Support organization in the U.K. and Johns Hopkins22 in the U.S. Both encourage cancer patients to exercise for 2.5 hours per week.
Exercise also lowers your odds of cancer recurrence once you’ve successfully recuperated. A study published in 2012 found that breast and colon cancer patients who exercised regularly had half the recurrence rate compared to non-exercisers.23

Exercise Combats Cancer in Many Ways

Exploring the relationship between exercise and cancer, a study24 in the British Medical Journal found that exercise affects several biological functions that may directly influence your cancer risk, including changes in energy balance, immune function, antioxidant defense, DNA repair, and hormone levels.
Indeed, there’s not just one mechanism responsible for its cancer-fighting effects. There are many, starting with the fact that exercise decreases your insulin resistance, which is a profoundly effective strategy to reduce your cancer risk. By creating a low sugar environment, you strongly discourage the growth and spread of cancer cells.
This is also one of the reasons why high-fat diet  tends to discourage cancer. A key point to remember is that while normal cells can use either glucose or ketones derived from fat as fuel, cancerous cells lack this metabolic flexibility and need glucose to survive and multiply. Cut off their supply of fuel, and you effectively starve the cancer cells to death.
Exercise, by lowering your blood sugar levels and normalizing your insulin sensitivity, has a similar effect — it essentially creates an environment that is less conducive to cancer growth.
Exercise also helps you shed excess fat and maintain a healthy weight (this is particularly true for high-intensity interval training). Excess weight is a significant risk factor, and obesity is responsible for an estimated 500,000 cancer cases worldwide each year.25 The link between obesity and cancer is primarily hormone-driven, as fat cells produce excess estrogen.
This also helps explain why exercise during childhood reduces your lifetime cancer risk, and why obese children are at a significantly heightened risk of cancer in their adult years.
Physical activity also improves circulation, driving more oxygen into your tissues, and circulating immune cells in your blood. By improving blood flow to your liver, it also helps your body detoxify potentially harmful substances, including excess estrogen that may spur estrogen-sensitive cancers.

The Metabolic Theory of Cancer

Perhaps most importantly, exercise promotes mitochondrial health. Mitochondrial damage can trigger genetic mutations that can contribute to cancer, so optimizing the health of your mitochondria is a key component of cancer prevention. In fact, mitochondrial dysfunction is at the core of virtually all diseases.
By forcing your mitochondria — those little power stations that produce ATP in your cells — to work harder, your mitochondria start making reactive oxygen species (ROS), which act as signaling molecules. One of the functions they signal is to make more mitochondria.
So, when you exercise, your body will respond by creating more mitochondria to keep up with the heightened energy requirement. Travis Christofferson’s book, "Tripping Over the Truth: The Return of the Metabolic Theory of Cancer Illuminates a New and Hopeful Path to a Cure" goes into all of this in great detail, and is a must-read for anyone interested in preventing or recovering from cancer.
Exercise stimulates AMPK and SIRT1, which secondarily inhibits mTOR, which then stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy, both of which are deadly to cancer. In essence, cancer can be viewed as a metabolic disorder, and the key to prevention and recovery lies in restoring mitochondrial function and increasing mitochondrial numbers. Exercise helps you do both.
Also, besides creating an environment that discourages cancer growth, another reason why nutritional ketosis works so well for cancer is because it too boosts mitochondrial function and drives down inflammation.

Exercise Improves Your Odds of a Long and Healthy Life

If you want to prevent disease, exercise! Cancer is just one of a very long list of health problems that can arise as a result ofchronic inactivity. Your metabolic and cardiovascular health is also largely dependent on exercise. In fact, one of the primary benefits of exercise is that it improves your insulin and leptin sensitivity and boosts your mitochondrial health, both of which play decisive roles in cancer and other chronic diseases.
Ideally you’ll want to establish a comprehensive exercise program that includes high-intensity exercises and strength training— both of which have been shown to be of particular benefit for cancer prevention. I also urge you to consider walking more,in addition to your regular workout regimen. Aim for about 7,000 to 10,000 steps (or about an hour-long walk) per day.
Also, avoid sitting as much as possible. If you can, limit your sitting to three hours a day or less, as the mere act of standing triggers beneficial changes in your biology.
Naturally, if you have cancer or any other chronic disease, you will need to tailor your exercise routine to your individual circumstances, taking into account your fitness level and current health. If at times you find you need to exercise at a lower intensity, or for shorter durations, don’t be discouraged. Always listen to your body and if you feel you need a break, take time to rest.
Just know that exercising for even just a few minutes a day is better than not exercising at all, and you'll likely find that your stamina increases over time, allowing you to complete more challenging workouts. If your immune system is severely compromised, you may want to exercise at home instead of visiting a public gym.
But, remember that exercise will ultimately help to boost your immune system, so it's very important to continue with your program even if you suffer from chronic illness or cancer.

For a healthy brain

BOSSES who are looking to have more productive workers, should perhaps realign the KPI’s for productivity by starting their employees on a movement programme.

Studies and research have shown that the brain functions better when the body feels good.

Over the past few years, we have witnessed increased attention to the benefits of exercise on brain function, especially for the ageing population.

In his book Spark, John Ratey discusses how children who exercised frequently demonstrated improved performance on academic tests.

But first, we need to understand the role of exercise in promoting improved cognitive function.

Here are some basic background information on the human brain:

► It weighs 1.5 to 2kg and is about the size of your cupped hands. The size of the brain has no correlation to the level of intelligence.

► The brain represents about 2% of body weight, yet consumes about 20% of your resting metabolism.

An average resting metabolism for an adult is about 1,200cals.

This means if you vegetate in front of the TV the whole day on any given Sunday, your body only needs 1,200cals to remain in function by which 20% or 250cals is used by the brain.

By comparison, muscle makes up 36 to 40% (women) and about 45% (men) of body mass, yet only consumes 18 to 20% of your resting metabolism.

The point is, if you actually go on a starvation diet, then you will be in starving your brain.

If you really need to be on a diet, then choose one that regulates a proper eating strategy and plan.

► Your brain is composed of approximately 78% water, 10% fat, 8% protein and 4% assorted compounds.

If you have a migraine or headache on a hot day or perhaps having that awful hangover and the throbbing headaches, then you are suffering from dehydration. Time to drink plenty of water.

► Your brain contains 100 billion neurons or nerve cells. By comparison, the entire human body has about 1,000 billion neurons.

For something small and that is not a muscle, it is intricately designed for optimum usage. The brain is, after all, the hub and processing centre in which all body functions operate.

► After age 35, the human brain starts to lose its mass and therefore function.

It is estimated that by age 65, approximately 10% of adults have some form of cognitive impairment, whereas by age 80, approximately 50% of adults suffer some form of cognitive impairment.

The loss of IQ and memory are some of the first visible changes. Greater brain shrinkage, however, is linked to problems with memory – and researchers say their findings suggest that exercise is potentially one important pathway to maintaining a healthy brain and its cognitive function.

The researchers also examined the brain’s white matter – the wiring that transmits messages around the brain. They found that people over 70 who were physically active had fewer ‘damaged’ areas – visible as abnormal areas on scanning – in the white matter than those who did little exercise.

The only way the brain can stay active is when the body also being active. The more uptake in movement activity also aids in creating better cognitive capabilities.

Movement is two-faceted. Movement needs brain function and brain function increases with more movement.

► After about 20 minutes of sitting motionless listening to lectures, our brain may interpret this as a progression towards sleep, thus shifts into auto-save mode, shutting off various functions and conserving energy.

The brain, just like the body, needs constant movement or activity, so make a plan to get up and move every 20 minutes (for 30-45 seconds) to keep the brain humming along.

Movement creates adrenalin. Doing push ups, jumping up and down are all good, but try these to trick the brain to work harder; perform cross-lateral patterns where movement of the extremities occurs across the mid-line of the body (left to right) as this connects the two hemispheres of the brain together.

Recent research has proven that exercise keeps cognitive abilities sharp and has a direct impact in preventing your risk of Alzheimer’s by 50%.

It boosts the flow of blood to certain parts of the brain, spurring the release of brain chemicals.

When released, these chemicals stimulate the formation of new neurons in the hippocampus, the area involved in memory, learning and the ability to plan and make decisions.

At the same time, the substance repairs cell damage and strengthen synapses, or the connections between brain cells.

Exercise also lowers stress, reduces the risk of stroke, helps control blood sugar and reduces the chances of falling by improving balance and coordination.

Stress, as we know it, is sometime caused by the brain being overworked. Exercise releases endorphins and serotonin to counter these effects.

So if you’re worried that your memory is fading, it’s time to get moving. Use your brain or risk losing it.

7 Reasons You Don’t Have Energy To Do Stuff

You want to check things off of your to-do list, but you just don’t have the energy to do them all. Ever wonder why this is? Check out the 7 reasons why people exhaust their energy out and you may be able to change things for yourself!
 
1. Carbohydrates
 
Sure those fast food fries taste good and that bread you just ate was filling, but did you know junk foods actually make you tired? Your body uses a lot of energy processing carbohydrates, which means you’ll feel tired and lethargic soon after eating them. You probably have noticed this in the past after eating heavy meals. Do you just want to take a nap when you’re done eating? If so, that’s because your body is busy processing those carbohydrates and converting them into energy!
 
2. Exercise
 
If your body is used to not getting any exercise, then it’s going to feel tired even from exerting even a small amount of energy. Exercising can actually give you more energy when you do it on a regular basis. Your body will release endorphins and it will build muscle as you continue to work out more often. This will result in being able to do more without feeling nearly as tired fatigued as you did before.

3. Sleep

Sleep isn’t just great because it makes you feel more alive; it also gives you energy. When your body doesn’t get rest at night it won’t be able to recover the way that it needs to. So, you need to make sure that you’re getting adequate sleep at night. This might mean going to bed earlier than you would like, but you will feel a lot better in the morning if you do. Even a half an hour can make a big difference with how you feel when you get up.

4. Breakfast

If you like to eat cereal laden breakfast in the morning, then you might want to consider quitting this habit right away. While these might give you energy right away, that is going to be gone in just a few hours time. This will result in you feeling super tired when you really need it. Eat a whole grain breakfast or eggs instead, and you will find that you have more energy throughout the day.

Women need to get around 7-9 hours of sleep at night and men need just the same. If you happen not to get that much sleep, then try to take a short nap during the day, but only for 10-20 minutes. This nap can give you energy without putting you into a fatigued state.

5. Coffee

That morning cup of coffee is going to stimulate your cortisol and adrenaline, but did you know that excess coffee is going to make you sleepy? If you continue to drink coffee all day long you’re going to deplete both of those hormones, which is going to result in fatigue. Try and cut back to one cup of coffee per day and drink water throughout the day as well.

6. Nutrition Deficit

There’s good reason why the FDA recommends getting five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Not only will this make you healthier, it will also ensure that you get the nutrients that your body needs for energy. For example, lack of magnesium could be causing you to feel sleepy all the time. Fortunately you can get more of this nutrient by eating dark green vegetables and kidney beans, as well as a wide variety of other foods.

Try to eat as many raw foods during the day that you’re able to. This means cutting out bad foods and getting more that are whole, which will give your body more nutrients that it needs. There are tons of recipes out there that can help, so explore them!

7. Stress

Everyone has to deal with stress on a daily basis, but excess stress might just be what is causing you fatigue. The brain uses up a lot of energy when you’re stressed, which will cause it to release adrenaline. You need this adrenaline, so it’s important that you try to avoid stress as much as you can. Meditation and deep breathing are great tools that you can use to release your stress and gain a new perspective. Both of these can also give you more energy, so try them out!

Adrenal Fatigue - Part 1

adrenal-fatigue_300In my previous article I discussed Susan, a 38-year-old woman with insomnia that gradually increased over the past two years. Her sleeplessness came from adrenal fatigue. Disruption of the adrenal hormones can result in adrenal fatigue, which frequently interferes with sleep. This article about adrenal fatigue explores the hormones involved and the symptoms of this condition so you can recognize it.

Adrenal Gland Hormones And Stress

Each of your adrenal glands sits on top of a kidney. They each have a middle (medulla) and outer (cortex) portion that performs separate functions.

In moments of stress, the adrenal medulla produces epinephrine (adrenaline), a necessary contributor to your fight-or-flight mode. Adrenaline does some amazing things really fast in your body: It increases the heart rate and the force of each contraction, constricts your blood vessels, opens your small lung airways, converts fat and glycogen into glucose for energy use, increases your metabolic rate (momentarily), and dilates your pupils.

Your adrenal cortex produces your sex hormones, fluid-balance hormones and cortisol.

I would like to focus on cortisol, especially on what happens when cortisol is low. Cortisol is your anti-stress hormone. It is secreted by the adrenal gland as a response to physical or mental stress in order to quickly free up your energy reserves. It stimulates appetite, improves digestion and acts as an anti-inflammatory (i.e. hydrocortisone).

Incidentally, you may already know a little about the anti-inflammatory effects of cortisol because of a similar molecule administered by doctors called prednisone. When prednisone is used at the usual doses of 10 to 60 mg daily doses for short durations, it dramatically stops the allergic reactions and inflammation that lead to rashes, asthma, joint pain and almost any autoimmune disease. Cortisol is similar to this substance. However, the physiological replacement dose is equal to only 1 to 3 mg of prednisone and is much safer for long-term use (unlike prednisone).

Cortisol is secreted from your adrenal gland into your bloodstream in highest amounts in the morning when you need it to get going with your day. There is a normal drop to a low level in the evening so your body can prepare for sleep.

Effects Of Cortisol Insufficiency

First, cortisol is mood calming. It lowers the excessive output of adrenaline a stimulating neurotransmitter.

Insufficient cortisol is a known major cause of emotional outbursts in the face of mental or physical stress. [1] Insufficient cortisol may also cause you to react to stress with a variety of inappropriate or excessive emotions. Depression, extreme moodiness, memory loss, confusion, absentmindedness, excessive anxiety and panic attacks have been seen to resolve with cortisol supplementation.

What happens when you stress yourself mentally or physically for many years? The natural effect for a large percentage of people is simply that the adrenal gland cannot keep up the demand for cortisol.

There are some typical life conditions that predispose a person for getting adrenal fatigue and cortisol insufficiency. These can include one or more major stressful events or long periods of stress. It may stem from being overworked with little play or relaxation for long periods of time.

Chronic physical illness or post-traumatic stress syndrome can also be a set-up for adrenal fatigue.

Alcoholism or drug abuse, prolonged use of steroid therapy (i.e., prednisone, etc.) are other predisposing conditions.

Physical Effects

The physical effects of insufficient cortisol are many. When your cortisol levels are low, you suffer a few or many of the following:
  • Your ability to handle stress is decreased; you are less productive at work.
  • You don’t think as clearly as you used to, especially when hurried or under pressure.
  • You tend to shake or get nervous stomach indigestion when under pressure.
  • Your sex drive is noticeably less than it used to be.
  • You feel lightheaded when rising quickly from a sitting or lying position.
  • You may experience difficulty waking up in the morning, much more energy after the noon meal and an afternoon energy lull from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • You suffer from being chronically fatigued and cannot relieve tiredness by sleeping.
  • You need to lie down after mental or emotional stress.
  • Your muscles are weaker than they should be.
  • You have an increased frequency or severity of allergic reactions.
  • A white line remains for a minute or more when you scratch your skin.
  • Your blood pressure is low.
  • You get low energy or moody if you do not eat regularly.
  • Feelings of hopelessness or despair increase.
  • You have decreased tolerance; you get more easily irritated by people than you used to.
  • Sweet and salty food cravings strike you.
  • Stress headaches interrupt your day.
  • You break out with skin rashes, eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo (white spots), keloids (thick scars) or irregular brown spots.
  • You experience heavy sweating in armpits.

I have characterized the person with adrenal fatigue. It is a real physical condition. Unfortunately, few doctors know much about because it is not taught in the mainstream medical schools. (When it comes to the adrenals, medical schools teach only about Addison’s disease, or complete adrenal failure).

The treatment is not complicated, but it does require some real lifestyle intervention, some natural supplements and tests. I’ll cover this in my next article for Easy Health Options.
