In the past, studies have found an association between eating red meat and an increased risk of a variety of health problems, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and certain cancers.
Recently, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health found that red meat consumption may not only increase a person’s chances of developing one of these conditions, but dying of them as well.
“We found that a higher intake of red meat was associated with a significantly elevated risk of total, CVD and cancer mortality, and this association was observed for unprocessed and processed red meat, with a relatively greater risk for processed red meat,” said the authors of the study.
The researchers explained that daily consumption of meat increased mortality by 20 percent.
