Healthy Heart Habits Protect The Prostate

Some men may be under the assumption that the only thing they can do to avoid prostate cancer is to get regular check-ups from their doctor to determine if they are at risk of the condition. What these men may not realize is that the same lifestyle changes that lower the risk of heart disease — diet, exercise and maintaining a healthy weightmay also protect against prostate cancer.

That was the conclusion made by researchers from the Duke Cancer Institute, who found a significant association between coronary artery disease and prostate cancer, suggesting that these two conditions may have the same causes.

“What’s good for the heart may be good for the prostate,” said Jean-Alfred Thomas, M.D., a post-doctoral fellow in the Division of Urology at Duke and lead author of the study, which appears online this month in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
