Owlet Baby Care is launching its smart sock via an independent crowdfunding campaign in hopes of bringing the product to market. The sensor-packed sock measures your baby's heart rate, blood oxygenation levels, sleep quality, skin temperature, and sleep position, which parents can access via a smartphone app.
The sock, which early bird backers can get for $159, features a four-sensors pulse oximeter, which measures skin temperature and heart rate. An accelerometer tracks your baby's movements, and an alarm sounds if your baby rolls onto his or her stomach.
The sock wirelessly transmits all of the data to your smartphone, where an app helps you analyse the details and view your baby's current health status.
While the US Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve the alarm, the crowdfunding proceeds will go toward that process. The company aims to bring in $100,000, and has already raised nearly $35,000 on the first few days of its campaign.
Another baby-centric sensor product, Pixie Scientific has developed high-tech Smart Diapers, which feature a QR code on the bottom of the diaper that changes colors when your baby has urinated. Parents can then scan the code with their smartphone using a companion app to log the data.
The app can then analyse the results to measure the risks for urinary tract infection, dehydration, and kidney problems, and can track health patterns over time. – AFP Relaxnews
