Researchers have long been excited over the health benefits of curcumin, an antioxidant compound found in the spice turmeric. And now, researchers in Thailand have found that consuming curcumin daily may cut the risk of type 2 diabetes for those who have high blood sugar levels. Those involved in the study took 250 milligrams of curcuminoids every day.
“Because of its benefits and safety, we propose that curcumin extract may be used for an intervention therapy for the prediabetes population,” says researcher Somlak Chuengsamarn of Srinakharinwirot University in Nakomnayok, Thailand.
However, other diabetes experts caution that moderate exercise, weight control and a whole foods diet are still necessary to reduce the risk of diabetes.
