Artificial Butter Flavor Can Harm The Brain

An ingredient in artificial butter flavoring has very real health consequences, according to researchers. Studies show that diacetyl (DA), used to make buttery microwave popcorn, may increase the harmful effects of an irregular brain protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

Scientists have found that those who worked around the ingredient— which is also found in some margarines, snack foods, candy, baked goods and pet foods— might be at risk for experiencing harmful effects to nerve cells.

“In light of the chronic exposure of industry workers to DA, this study raises the troubling possibility of long-term neurological toxicity mediated by DA,” concluded the research team led by Robert Vince.
