Drinking Plenty Of Water May Reduce Bladder Cancer Risk
November 1, 2011 by Easy Health Options Staff

In addition to keeping a person hydrated and promoting a healthy urinary tract, it appears as though drinking about 10 cups of fluids, especially water, each day may decrease an individual's chances of developing bladder cancer.

In a study of 47,900 men aged 40 to 75 over a 22-year period, researchers from Brown University observed that participants who drank about 10 cups of fluids each day had a 24 percent lower risk of bladder cancer compared to men who consumed fewer beverages.

Authors of the study theorized that drinking non-alcoholic liquids may flush carcinogens out of the bladder, thereby cutting down on the amount of tissue damage they may cause.

The researchers noted that fluid intake appeared to have a more significant effect on younger men, and that the positive benefits declined with age.

According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 69,250 Americans are diagnosed each year with urinary bladder cancer. The disease disproportionately affects men, who account for about 52,000 of the diagnoses. Additionally, the organization reports that the condition is responsible for about 15,000 deaths annually in the U.S.
