Still eating that fried dough? Researchers in England have found that your daily munch may be increasing your risk of colon cancer.
The British researchers say they have finished the first study that shows a positive link between colon cancer and foods like doughnuts that contain lots of sugar and fat. Soft drinks were also found to be risky.
Which doughnuts? All of them.
The researchers analyzed data from the Scottish Colorectal Cancer Study. The research identified two distinct eating patterns. The first (healthy) pattern is high in fruit, vegetables and other healthy foods. The other, known as the Western pattern, is high in meat, fat and sugar.
The healthy dietary pattern was found to be associated with a decreased colon cancer risk, while the Western dietary pattern was found to be associated with an increased risk.
Dr. Evropi Theodoratou of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Molecular, Genetic and Population Health Sciences says: “What we have found is very interesting and it merits further investigation using large population studies. While the positive associations between a diet high in sugar and fat and colorectal cancer do not automatically imply ’cause and effect’, it is important to take on board what we’ve found — especially as people in industrialized countries are consuming more of these foods.”
