Scientists at the Georgia Regents University (GRU) Cancer Center in Atlanta have identified an Indian plant, used for centuries to treat inflammation, fever and malaria, that could help kill cancer cells.
The compound is gedunin, found in neem, a tree used in Ayurvedic medicine. Traditionally, the seeds, leaves and bark of neem have been used in herbal preparations to treat a wide variety of health issues.
The study in Georgia found that gedunin attacks proteins that help cancer cells survive and spread in the body.
“This finding is an important piece of the puzzle, bringing us closer to our goal of helping patients with cancer,” says Dr. Samir N. Khleif, Director of the GRU Cancer Center
