Skip This Meal At Your Own Risk

A study at Harvard shows that men who skip breakfast suffer a higher risk of heart problems than breakfast eaters. The 16-year study tracked the health of more than 26,000 men. It found:
  • Men who skip breakfast have a 27 percent higher risk of heart attack or death from coronary artery disease than breakfast eaters.
  • Men who don’t eat breakfast tend to be younger and are more likely to be smokers, employed full time, unmarried, less physically active and drink more alcohol than breakfast consumers.
  • Men who eat late at night (eating after going to bed) have a 55 percent higher heart disease risk than those who don’t get cracker crumbs in the sheets.
“Don’t skip breakfast,” says researcher Leah E. Cahill. “Eating breakfast is associated with a decreased risk of heart attacks. Incorporating many types of healthy foods into your breakfast is an easy way to ensure your meal provides adequate energy and a healthy balance of nutrients, such as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. For example, adding nuts and chopped fruit to a bowl of whole grain cereal or steel-cut oatmeal in the morning is a great way to start the day.”
