Absence might make the heart grow fonder, but researchers have found that if you’re absent from this meal, you increase the risk of a heart attack or coronary artery disease.
A study at Harvard shows that men who skip breakfast suffer a higher risk of heart problems than breakfast eaters. The 16-year study tracked the health of more than 26,000 men. It found:
- Men who skip breakfast have a 27 percent higher risk of heart attack or death from coronary artery disease than breakfast eaters.
- Men who don’t eat breakfast tend to be younger and are more likely to be smokers, employed full time, unmarried, less physically active and drink more alcohol than breakfast consumers.
- Men who eat late at night (eating after going to bed) have a 55 percent higher heart disease risk than those who don’t get cracker crumbs in the sheets.
