More Evidence That Sitting All Day Can Kill You

| Apr 05, 2012 | Comments 2

One of the worst inventions of modern civilization, it turns out, is the chair. Sit in an awkward position and your foot falls asleep. Slump for a while and your back aches. And if you sit for more than eight hours a day, about the amount of time most of us spend in chairs, you increase your risk of dying in the next three years by 15 percent.

Researchers in Australia have found that even for those of us who exercise every day, spending the rest of the time sitting still is dangerous to health. As they put it, “Prolonged sitting is a risk factor for all-cause mortality, independent of physical activity.”

At the same time, a study in Finland used biosensors inserted into people’s clothing to see how much time they sat during the day. The scientists discovered that even exercisers spent about 70 percent of their waking hours sitting, an amount that threatens health.
