Social Butterflies Live Longer

Humans are gregarious creatures and, instinctually, early humans sought safety in numbers. In contrast, many modern humans are loners. A staggering number of people today forego face-to-face encounters and prefer alone time with their electronic gadgets.

That solitary lifestyle can diminish your life expectancy. According to a review of 148 studies measuring how social relationships influence health, too many solitary days and nights can shorten your life. The analysis shows that a social disconnect can disconnect you from being alive. In one the individual studies that were examined, researchers followed 4,775 participants in San Francisco and found that those who placed low on the social network index were twice as likely to die as the social butterflies.
