The Food That Stops Breast Cancer

Scientists at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia have discovered a food that stops the growth of breast cancer cells.

The food, oily fish like sardines and salmon, are rich in omega-3 fats that work against all types of cancer cells but may be stronger in what are called triple-negative cell lines.

“Diet can play a critical role in breast cancer prevention,” says researcher Thomas J. Pogash. “When you compare a western diet to a Mediterranean diet, which has more omega-3s, you see less cancer in the Mediterranean diet. They eat much more fish.”

No targeted therapies are currently available for patients diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. Combination chemotherapies are the standard of care for early-stage disease. “This type of cancer, which is found more frequently in Latina and African-American women, is highly aggressive and has a low survival rate,” says researcher Jose Russo. “There is not any specific treatment for it.”

Previous research indicates that omega-3s also may help stop prostate cancer.
