Can Pomegranate Prevent Prostate Cancer?

Pomegranates are the epitome of a super food — for no small reason.

In fact, these bright red fruits are one of the richest sources of antioxidants known.

They’ve been shown to protect against a variety of diseases including heart disease,1 diabetes,2 and atherosclerosis.3

But the benefits of pomegranate don’t stop there. In fact, pomegranate juice may slow prostate cancer growth, according to research from UCLA.

Let’s take a look at the research.

Study Finds Pomegranate Slows Rising PSA Levels


In the study, investigators from UCLA recruited men with a prior history of prostate cancer. They had undergone cancer surgery or radiation, but their PSA levels (a prostate tumor marker) were quickly rising. They were given 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily for several years.

What they found was striking: The men who drank the juice had slower rising PSA levels.4 Specifically, it took 54 months for their PSA levels to double rather than the average 15 months prior to drinking pomegranate juice.

This wasn’t the only human study to find positive results. A more recent one conducted in 2012 showed that pomegranate extract reduced PSA increases as well.5
The goal of prostate cancer therapy is to keep PSA levels as low as possible. And slower increases are a positive sign. But just what is it about pomegranate that makes it so beneficial? Laboratory studies may offer clues.

Pomegranate Offers Anti-Cancer Properties


The best way to attack cancer is through a multi-targeted approach. Cancerous cells work through different mechanisms to grow and spread.

That’s why it’s important to tackle different mechanisms simultaneously for the best results — an approach which is rarely utilized by conventional medicine.

This is also why pomegranate looks so promising — it attacks prostate cancer in a variety of ways:

  • Pomegranate induces apoptosis, a process in which cancer cells die.6 Normally, your body kills cancer cells through this process. When apoptosis fails, cancer cells can reproduce uncontrollably.

  • Pomegranate suppresses inflammatory markers like NF-kB (nuclear factor-kappa B), which is associated with tumor growth.7

  • Pomegranate blocks angiogenesis, the process in which tumors generate new blood vessels.8 Tumors develop their own blood supply in order to obtain nutrients for growth. Cutting their blood supply could essentially “starve” a tumor and affect its growth.

  • Pomegranate stops cancer cell proliferation and invasion of cells.9 Cancer cells become more dangerous when they spread from their site of origin and it’s usually this metastasis that claims the lives of many cancer patients.
The primary benefits of pomegranate are attributed to their ellagitannin content,6 which are phytochemicals with powerful antioxidant properties. Other powerful compounds they contain include caffeic acid and luteolin.10

The Bottom Line


The goal of prostate cancer therapy is to keep PSA levels as low as possible, as rising values can indicate recurrence. To keep levels from increasing, doctors often prescribe therapies such as hormone deprivation, which can produce undesirable side effects.

Regardless, significant strides in prostate cancer research have been made within the last few decades. The five-year survival rates have increased remarkably since the 1970s4, though it still remains a top killer.

That’s why it’s important that men take a multi-modal approach in treating their disease.

The results of the UCLA study are truly remarkable and show promise for men with this condition. Although the pomegranate juice wasn’t “a cure” per se, it significantly delayed PSA values without any dangerous side effects to speak of.

Not bad at all for a fruit, wouldn’t you say?

cancer preventionCancer has claimed the lives of millions of people across the globe, prompting healthcare officials and researchers to adopt a pro-active stand against this medical condition. Both government and non-government groups have campaigned for the identification and implementation of cancer prevention measures that could possibly slow down or ultimately stop cancer development.

These health programs emphasize the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, which consists of consuming fruits and vegetables and engaging in physical exercises that could facilitate in decreasing cancer risk and prevent cancer development.

The Good News for Cancer Prevention

Cancer prevention mainly involves a variety of activities that may significantly reduce the risk of cancer development. For example, smoking for an extended period of time has long been recognized as a risk factor in the lung cancer development. For cancer prevention, smoking cessation can thus prevent cancer development and lower lung cancer risk. On the other hand, regular pap smears for women is considered an effective cancer prevention scheme against cervical cancer. Women who are engaged in sexual activity are thus encouraged to undergo regular pap smear examination to detect any signs of cancer development in the uterus.

The extensive application of screening assays in detecting symptoms of cancer development to reduce cancer risk has reached prominence in healthcare programs. However, it is also essential to directly determine whether these cancer prevention programs are indeed effective in reducing cancer risk. The health departments of various countries around the world have spent millions of dollars in supporting the purchase of expensive equipment that are used in detecting signs of cancer development. As for legislators, these government officials are always ready to cut the budget of specific healthcare programs once they directly determine that a specific cancer prevention technique is useless in lowering cancer risk.

The Recent Report on Cancer Risk

According to a recent report published in the journal PLoS One, the use of mammography and other screening approaches for cancer prevention has significantly contributed to the decrease in breast cancer-related mortality among Spanish women. The study involved reviewing the mortality rates associated with breast cancer from 1975 to 2008. In addition, this data was compared to the number of women examined for breast cancer during the same study period, together with the extent of application of cancer prevention screening assays such as mammography and adjuvant therapies. The study also examined the effects of various types of breast cancer screening approaches, including single and combination assays. The researchers wanted to know the optimal cancer prevention setting that could generate the greatest reduction in cancer risk.

The results of the study showed that the combination of mammography screening and adjuvant therapy significantly decreased the chances of cancer development among Spanish women. At the start of the study period until 1993, an increase in breast cancer-related deaths was observed, changing from 29% to 38% per 100,000 women. However, this subsequently decreased to 23% by 2003, possibly due to the extensive screening programs against breast cancer. Interestingly, the mortality rate for breast cancer by 2003 was much lower than that report in 1975, thus surpassing their expected decrease in cancer risk. More importantly, the application of cancer prevention screening programs has thus effectively addressed the need to identify an approach against cancer development.

The proponents of the study were aware that if specific cancer prevention programs such as mammography were not implemented, it was highly likely that the cancer risk of their study population would have further increased to 47% by 2003.

This recent report on the impact of breast cancer screening approaches to decrease cancer risk attests to its contribution in improving human health. The reduction in the mortality rate of women due to breast cancer may also increase life expectancy among women, and ultimately, diminish breast cancer risk.

cancer riskDiabetes mellitus type 2, also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes, pertains to the metabolic disorder that is characterized by a high level of blood sugar and resistance to insulin, which is the pancreatic hormone responsible in the metabolism of carbohydrates. Type 2 diabetes is generally differentiated from type 1 diabetes based on the need for insulin administration to control blood sugar levels in the body.

In the last few decades, there has been an increase in the number of reports that describe the relationship of type 2 diabetes to other medical conditions. It has been suggested that the occurrence of high blood sugar levels may increase the risk of development of cardiovascular and urological diseases and thus physicians aggressively campaign for the proactive health management for people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

According to a recent medical report published in the journal BMC Public Health, the chances of cancer development may be higher among individuals with type 2 diabetes, thus prompting additional management schemes that may help in decreasing cancer risk. The report described the results of a study that involved screening diseases registries in a population in the Zhejiang province of China from 2002 to 2008. Two disease registries were reviewed, namely the Diabetic Surveillance Registry and the Cancer Registry of the city. The investigators conducted this study to determine whether the incidence of cancer and cancer risk was higher among individuals who were previously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

The Study on Cancer Risk Assessment

The results of the study showed that the incidence of cancer was indeed much higher among patients listed in the Cancer Registry. In addition, the report also showed that pancreatic cancer was the most common type of cancer that afflicted type 2 diabetes patients. Interestingly, the reported also showed that certain types of cancer are more common in particular genders. For example, cancer development in the liver and kidney were more common among male type 2 diabetes patients, whereas breast cancer and leukemia were observed to occur at a higher incidence among female type 2 diabetes patients.

This recent medical report serves as a large-scale investigation that attempted to establish the relationship between type 2 diabetes and cancer development and cancer risk. Reviewing the medical registries of the city may be the initial step to fully determine the extent of cancer risk in this specific population. Although previous studies have suggested the link between cancer development and type 2 diabetes, these earlier reports have not directly assessed its relationship using a significantly large population. According to the medical report, almost 8,000 type 2 diabetes patients were listed in the Diabetes Surveillance Registry and these individuals were checked against the Cancer Registry for a span of six years. The simple enlistment of a type 2 diabetes patients in the Cancer Registry was considered as direct information on cancer development and cancer risk.

Cancer development is triggered by the abnormal division of cells of a specific organ of the body that often results in the generation of a tumor. In other cases of cancer development, cells may migrate to other areas of the body, which may induce further proliferation. Cancer development has been associated with incurred mutations in cells that activate cellular activities that were initially quiescent. Physicians and scientists recognize that leading a healthy lifestyle, including consuming fruits and vegetables, may decrease cancer risk. Avoiding smoking and consumption of alcoholic beverages may also prevent cancer development.

The recent medical report on the associated between type 2 diabetes and cancer risk may help physicians and patients in designing maintenance schemes that could prevent cancer development. The report directly showed that cancer risk may be higher among type 2 diabetes patients and thus it may be essential to adapt preventive measures against this disease. Cancer risk may also be decreased by regular exercise and getting sufficient hours of sleep. Health management for individuals with type 2 diabetes may be challenging enough and thus lowering one’s cancer risk may prevent further complications to one’s life.
