By now, everybody knows that smoking can lead to lung cancer. But a study at the National Cancer Institute shows that there’s one time of day that smoking puts your lungs in especially serious danger.
According to this research, if you smoke your first cigarette of the day within an hour of waking up in the morning, you significantly boost your chances of lung cancer. If you can wait at least an hour after getting out of bed before lighting up, your cancer risk drops.
The study looked at the smoking habits of more than 3,000 smokers. About 1,800 of these people had already developed lung cancer. The folks with cancer generally started smoking earlier in the morning than the people who had avoided (so far) getting cancer.
The researchers conclude: “Assessing TTFC (time to first cigarette) may improve lung cancer risk prediction and could be useful in lung cancer screening and smoking cessation programs.”
