Testosterone is an anabolic steroid hormone produced in our bodies. Surprisingly, this sex hormone is produced in both males and females. Though principally a male sex hormone, it is responsible for a healthy sex life. In men, the testicles, and in women, the ovaries, secrete this sex hormone. Erectile dysfunction and low sex drive, which are becoming common in males, are the result of low levels of this sex hormone. The following facts are important for everyone to understand about this sex hormone:

1. Testosterone is found in males as well in females. Contrary to the layman belief that testosterone is a male sex hormone, it is found in females as well. Young females produce a significant quantity of testosterone every day, which is responsible for their libido and active sex life. Low levels of testosterone in females also affect their sexual health which makes them feel more fatigued, less arousal, and less sense of well-being. Incidences of erectile dysfunction in males or decline in the sexual health of females are more or less dependent on the testosterone levels in their body.

 2. Testosterone is always thought to be only linked with sexual health functions in the human body. Testosterone is linked with muscle and bone health as well. When the testosterone levels decline in the body, the muscles become weak and there are chances of osteoporosis to occur. Low testosterone levels are also linked with increased risk of heart diseases, sleep apnea, and obesity.

3. Sexual arousal is linked with testosterone. Sexual stimulants, such as being near a sexual attraction, watching porn, etc., have an effect over the testosterone concentration in the blood, which is responsible for a strong sex life. Researchers have observed a 35 percent increase in testosterone levels due to such stimulants. The decline in the sex hormone is linked with erectile dysfunction in men. Low levels of testosterone may be the result of chronic illnesses, which can precipitate erectile dysfunction. But contrary to common belief, declining sexual health in the elderly is not linked with decreased testosterone levels but to other health factors.

4. Aggression is linked with testosterone levels. Males having high testosterone levels show aggressive behavior as compared to females. Castrated males have a more pacified behavior than their normal counterparts. Many studies relate sex hormones to anti-social behavior and cruelty. Alternatively, testosterone therapy given to men with low testosterone levels has proved to provide improved mood and an active sex life.

5. Testosterone has medicinal use. Apart from being a natural hormone for a good sex life, this hormone can be prescribed for other conditions like erectile dysfunction, osteoporosis, infertility, hypogonadism, post-menopausal syndrome, breast cancer, etc.
