Many of us may eat the same way we do everything else—while multitasking. And if those two activities are eating and talking, we may be in for some stomach discomfort afterward, says Christine L. Frissora, MD, a gastroenterologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

She explains that talking while eating can result in swallowing too much air, which can lead to bloating, gas and even belching. Give your meal partners a chance to speak while you chew. It will make for better conversation—and a happier tummy for you.
