Q. Are there any treatments for receding gums besides surgery?
A. No, but receding gums (gingival recession) do not necessarily need treatment. Receding gums can result from vigorous tooth-brushing, from having orthodontics or sometimes from inheriting large teeth but having a narrow jaw. If your teeth are not sensitive, can be properly cleaned, and there is no cosmetic issue, you may not require treatment.
However, in some cases, the underlying muscles can tug at the gums and may require treatment to prevent more recession or bone loss. When it is necessary to treat receding gums, there are a number of minor surgical procedures to correct or contain the problem.
