Vitamin B12 May Reduce Alzheimer’s Risk

December 20, 2011 by

If you’re low in vitamin B12, you may be at extra risk for Alzheimer’s. A seven-year Swedish study of people aged 65 to 79 found that those who were lowest in B12 ran the highest risk of Alzheimer’s.

"Our findings show the need for further research on the role of vitamin B12 as a marker for identifying people who are at increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease," said study author Babak Hooshmand, MD, MSc, with Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. "Low levels of vitamin B12 are surprisingly common in the elderly.”

As you grow older, the body’s ability to absorb B12 from food decreases. As a result, B12 supplements, or injections, are often necessary to get enough of this vitamin.
