State of Our Health

We are reviewing the South Australian health system from 2011 to 2014.  Our first section of the review was developing a comprehensive and up-to-date picture of South Australians’ current health status – the State of Our Health.

Overview

Under section 11 of the Health Care Act 2008, one of our core functions is to advise the Minister for Health and Ageing about the health outcomes for South Australians and particular population groups where appropriate.State of Our Health is structured to allow us to provide this advice.
State of Our Health provides a comprehensive view of what the South Australian population looks like, its current health status, and emerging trends. It is a foundation reference document that will feed into our 2011-14 review of the South Australian health system, which will include an assessment of indicators of the health system's performance.
State of Our Health aims to answer:
  • What is the current demographic profile of the South Australian population?
  • How healthy are South Australians?
  • Are the factors determining good health changing for the better?
State of Our Health presents over 90 high-level health status and outcome measures as trends, variability across specific population groups, and (where available) national and international comparisons. The report starts with South Australia's population characteristics, demographic profiles, and health determinant factors and is then followed by four chapters by key life-stages.

Consultation

Engagement is in our DNA, so we asked the public, health professionals, consumer representatives and South Australian services what they thought about State of Our Health. Consultation closed 30 August 2013. We had great feedback, including leads on additional data sources, the importance of regional data where available, and that we should be clearer throughout the document that we've used the most recent data available.
We're currently making changes to the report and starting analysis and commentary on the data, which we will present in our independent review of the South Australian health system in 2014. Our 2014 report will also include data on the health system itself.
