While everyone loses some height as they age, some lose more than others. Research shows that you can stay taller with some simple lifestyle adjustments.
A study conducted by Harvard, Peking University and the University of Southern California (USC) shows that if you want to stay taller as you age:
“(P)eople shrink differentially, and that shrinkage is also a measure of adult health conditions,” says researcher Geert Ridder of USC.
All humans go through physical changes with age, including an increase in body fat and decrease in bone mass. But a decrease in height can be further exacerbated by certain kinds of arthritis, inflammation of spine joints or osteoporosis, which other studies have shown are associated with such lifestyle choices as diet, exercise and smoking.

- Get more schooling. For instance, high school graduates shrink 3/4 of an inch less than people with little or no education.
- Live in a city. Urban dwellers are taller than people who live in rural areas.
- Don’t smoke. Smokers shrink more.
