5 foods that helps prevent dementia

There is no perfect cure for dementia so preventing it before hand is very important. Here are five foods that may help you to prevent dementia.


1. Wild Salmon
According to a study done by Tufts University in Boston, subjects who ate an average of three servings of oily fish per week had nearly 50 percent lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Salmon is a good source of omega-3 essential fatty acids and other necessary nutrients such as vitamin D and B12 that can assist to prevent neurodegenerative disorders.


2. Walnut


Research by the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging said that a moderate, but not high, diet of walnuts helped ehance motor and cognitive skills in older rodents. The experts said that a combination of polyphenols, omega-3 fats and other bioactive substances in walnut is the factor for this positive effect.



3. Cherry
Scientists discovered that the antioxidant compounds, anthocyanins, which give cherries their bright red color contains anti-inflammatory properties that may work like pain medications such as Vioxx and Celebrex, but without the bad side effects.


 
4. Dark Chocolate
Studies done by Norwegian researchers discovered that the flavonoids in cocoa increase blood flow to the brain and may assist to protect against conditions with decreased cerebral blood flow like dementia and stroke.


5. Green Tea
Ingredients in green tea (and to a lesser extent, black tea) slows the build-up of plaque in brains from amyloid deposits. Drinking tea is associated with mental alertness.
