Detoxifying foods that defeat cancer

If you want to prevent cancer, you need to do one thing above all else: detoxify. Because let’s face it, you’re confronted by carcinogens around every corner — in your furniture, clothing, food, air, water — and your body needs help getting rid of them.

Luckily, there are plenty of safe, natural ways to send these harmful toxins packing. You can try fasting, colonics or other popular detox methods… but some of these are a bit on the extreme (and expensive) side.
Or you can keep your detoxification regimen really simple and follow one easy piece of advice: Eat a lot of cruciferous vegetables.
The latest research shows that a compound in cruciferous vegetables known as sulforaphane can actually activate your body’s “detoxification” gene and help your body get rid of the toxins that lead to cancer.
Now there are certain plant compounds that have been proven time and time again to prevent cancer, and sulforaphane is one of them. Previously, sulforaphane has been shown to selectively kill cancer cells, so its ability to alter your genes in a way that promotes detoxification is just an added bonus.
These two abilities combined make sulforaphane a super potent cancer-fighter—a fact which isn’t lost on researchers. Recently, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh decided to study whether sulforaphane could keep survivors of head and neck cancer from relapsing. And the results are promising.
“With head and neck cancer, we often clear patients of cancer only to see it come back with deadly consequences a few years later,” said lead author of the study Julie Bauman, M.D., M.P.H., co-director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Head and Neck Cancer Center of Excellence. “Unfortunately, previous efforts to develop a preventative drug to reduce this risk have been inefficient, intolerable in patients and expensive. That led us to ‘green chemoprevention’–the cost-effective development of treatments based upon whole plants or their extracts.”
Now Bauman has studied the anti-cancer effects of sulforaphane in human cells, human beings and mice, and here’s what she’s found so far:
  • Sulforaphane activates the genes responsible for detoxifying carcinogens in both healthy and cancerous human throat and mouth cells.
  • Healthy people who swished juice containing sulforaphane around in their mouths also effectively triggered these cancer detoxification genes in their mouth cells.
  • Mice prone to head and neck cancer who were given sulforaphane had less tumors than mice who weren’t given sulforaphane.
In case you don’t already know, sulforaphane can be found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy and Brussel sprouts, among others. So your mom was right when she told you to eat your broccoli—her advice may have even helped you prevent cancer up until this point.
In Baumann’s study, she and fellow researchers gave participants high doses of broccoli sprout extract because broccoli sprouts are actually the most potent sources of sulforaphane. In other words, broccoli (and its sprouts) should be the first of the cruciferous vegetables you turn to in your cancer prevention efforts.
If you’re really serious about getting your daily dose of sulforaphane, you can grow your own broccoli sprouts at home—all you need are a mason jar, a sprouting lid, broccoli seeds and water. Check out this video tutorial here to get started. Once you start growing your own sprouts, you can add a handful to every meal and you should be good to go.
But there are also sulforaphane supplements on the market, if you’d rather go that route. Recommended dosages range anywhere between 400 mcg and 60 mg daily. Of course getting your sulforaphane (and other nutrients) from whole food sources is always the healthiest option.

The Cancer Revolution: A Helpful Program to Reverse and Prevent Cancer

Story at-a-glance-

  • Optimizing your body’s ability to burn fat as its primary fuel by eating a ketogenic diet and/or fasting is a foundational aspect of cancer prevention and treatment. Detoxification is another crucial component
  • Effective detoxification strategies include using a far-infrared sauna coupled with a near-infrared light, organic coffee enemas and taking regular baths with Epsom salt, baking soda and clay
  • Several lab tests can now offer important information about your cancer risk, including blood tests that check for inflammation and insulin resistance, which are precursors and hallmarks of all disease
By Dr. Mercola

Half of all men and one-third of all women will experience cancer at some point in their lives. Fortunately, there are ways to significantly reduce your risk, as detailed in Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy’s book, “The Cancer Revolution: A Groundbreaking Program to Reverse and Prevent Cancer.” Connealy’s interest in cancer prevention and treatment grew out of her own, long personal health journey.
“[When] my mother was pregnant with me … she started bleeding. The doctor gave her a drug called DES (diethylstilbestrol). That was given to women in the ‘50s to prevent miscarriage. Approximately 16 years later, my parents received a letter … [saying] ‘This drug causes cancer, hormone problems and anatomical problems. You need to go to University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and get a full workup.’
At 16 years of age, I started getting pap smears, colposcopies and biopsies … [T]hey told me … I would need to be followed continuously for this problem. I went to University of Texas School of Public Health and did my Masters on DES … [learning] all about the complications …
I had many of them. Today, I still have many of them. My whole mission is [to avoid] cancer, because I was so high risk. Luckily, in my journey … I met practitioners who’d had cancer themselves and fought it and won. I always tell people, ‘You learn from those who have already been down that path and have become masters of healing themselves.’”

Key Anticancer Strategies: Diet and Detoxification

Optimizing your body’s ability to burn fat as its primary fuel by eating a ketogenic diet and/or fasting is a foundational aspect of cancer prevention and treatment. Detoxification is another crucial component. Connealy’s book contains a chapter focused on detoxification, as most of us are inundated with thousands of toxins each day, many of which have carcinogenic potential.
“Water, air and soil [are contaminated],” she says. “If you’re going to live in today’s world … the No. 1 thing you need to do is detox on a regular basis, somehow, some way. A lot of it you can do at home all by yourself …
We do heavy metal testing and toxic load testing for all patients … [Phthalates are] the next big thing. Phthalates are everywhere … [and] we know they cause cancer, heart disease and diabetes … Then [there are] the heavy metals — mercury, cadmium, lead, oxides, aluminum and arsenic.
Then [there’s] the benzene compounds … indoor air pollution, outdoor air pollution … toxic teeth. People don’t realize their teeth are connected to the rest of their body. There are toxins being produced by different infections and/or root canals …
Then you have [water pollution] … Even if you’re not taking a prescription by your doctor, you’re getting it in the water. Whether it’s blood pressure pills, chemo, birth control pills … it’s in the water supply. You’re getting it regardless of getting water purification.”

Simple Detox Strategies

When it comes to water filtration, remember that filtering your shower water may be more important than filtering your drinking water, as you actually absorb three times more chemicals through your skin than when taken orally. There are many ways to eliminate toxins. One of the simplest and perhaps safest ways is to use a low EMF, far-infrared sauna coupled with a near-infrared light, as your skin is a major organ of elimination.
Connealy has had a sauna in her office for nearly 18 years. “I tell people the single greatest investment they can make … is investing in an infrared sauna,” she says. Not only is it useful for detoxification, but cancer cells also do not fare well in extreme heat.
Adding ozone to your sauna is another potent anti-cancer strategy. Hooking the ozone generator up to an oxygen generator is ideal. Place the ozone generator in the sauna with a small fan to blow away the excess. Connealy also recommends using organic coffee enemas and taking regular baths with Epsom salt, baking soda and clay.
“The medicinal effects of Epsom salt are phenomenal,” she says. “It relaxes the nervous system. Magnesium’s involved in 400 chemical reactions in your body. It relaxes the entire muscular system. Then baking soda … It helps oxygenate. It’s antimicrobial. It alkalinizes the body. These are simple little things that we can do in the comfort of our home.”
She also uses zeolite as a daily detox, along with 10 ounces of fresh green juice each morning and vitamin C, the latter of which has potent antimicrobial, anti-chemical, anticancer, alkalinizing effects. “People sometimes say they can’t afford some of these things,” Connealy says. “Yes, you can afford it. You’ve got to put your priorities in place. Health is your most important asset.”

On Cancer Screening

Another section of her book addresses cancer screenings. While detecting cancer early is important, many screening tests have been shown to actually do more harm than good, necessitating taking both pros and cons into consideration.
For women, the most commonly used cancer tests are the Pap smear, mammograms and colonoscopies. While Connealy believes the Pap smear is a good tool, she’s less enthusiastic about mammograms, calling them “an inadequate, incomplete tool of investigation for cancer, especially if you have dense breasts.” In her practice, she recommends ultrasound and thermography instead. She explains her choice, saying:
“The standard of care is for a patient to get mammography. That’s what I’m supposed to tell patients. But I tell people, ‘Look. You’re not going to get all the answers.’ I’ve been doing thermography for a long time. I find most of the breast cancer on thermography, as opposed to mammography.”
For men, common cancer screens include the PSA test, which has been shown to be highly inaccurate and has the potential to cause physical harm.

Blood Tests That Help Reveal Your Cancer Risk

Rather than rely on these conventional cancer tests, Connealy uses standard blood tests to check for things like inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which are precursors and hallmarks of all disease, including cancer. One such test is the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) test, which is a non-specific marker for inflammation. “It doesn’t tell me where the cancer is, but it tells me something is brewing,” she says. “We want to see C-reactive protein less than 1.”
The other blood test she uses on all patients is the hemoglobin A1C test, which reflects your blood sugar over the past 90 days. The reason for this test is because high blood sugar is a cancer-friendly environment. “Just those two tests … will tell us that you have an environment for cancer,” Connealy says. Other valuable blood tests Connealy routinely uses include:
•A cancer profile test (fasting blood and urine) from American Metabolic Laboratories, which checks for:
◦Quantitative human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)
◦Phosphohexose isomerase (PHI), the enzyme of hypoxia or low oxygen, which allows cancer to thrive
◦Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA), a stress hormone
◦Thyroid hormones, as low thyroid levels may predispose you to cancer
◦Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), a liver marker and a sensitive screening tool for inflammation
◦Arachidonyl-2-chloroethylamide (ACEA), a non-specific marker for many cancers
•ONCOblot, which can identify up to 33 tissue types of cancer and has a 95 percent accuracy rate. It measures the ENOX2 protein
•Circulating tumor cell test by the Research Genetic Cancer Center (RGCC). The vast majority of people die not from the tumor itself but from circulating cancer stem cells, which allow the cancer to metastasize and spread throughout the body. This test is used after cancer treatment, to determine whether or not you might need to continue an anti-cancer program. Connealy explains:
“Even if you have surgery, chemo or radiation, it will not eradicate or eliminate circulating tumor cells … The biggest cause of reoccurrence is the circulating tumor cells and stem cells … Anybody who’s had cancer must have their circulating tumor cells [or] stem cells checked quantitatively.
RGCC is not the only lab that does it, but … they’re in 13 countries [and] have the highest laboratory international certification you can have. It is, to me, probably the most accurate …”

Cancer Prevention Is for Everyone

Connealy explains her core strategy when working with patients in her family practice:
“I try to … figure out where all their imbalances are, whether there are nutritional deficiencies, toxic substances, heavy metals, do they have the right antioxidants, are their mitochondria working or not working? Then I do all the hormone testing. I also look for cancer, because we all have to embrace this prevention …
Today we have this incredible laboratory testing … I do the nutritional testing, and it’s not just nutritional checking. It checks their gut. It checks their antioxidants. It checks everything. You know what you’re dealing with more specifically. Believe it or not, the insurance companies pay for all these tests. It’s not like it’s financially unaffordable because all the insurance companies pretty much pay for all of these, whether it’s blood testing and/or nutritional testing.”
She also employs nutritional supplements known to improve mitochondrial function and/or aid in the elimination of cancer stem cells. There are approximately 50 different agents with a known effect on circulating tumor cells and stem cells, including vitamin C, vitamin D, curcumin and agaricus, a type of mushroom.
In regard to vitamin C — which recently made headlines when researchers found intravenous (IV) vitamin C doubles the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation treatment — the vitamin works by producing hydrogen peroxide. This oxidative stress is what kills the cancer cells, while healthy cells have several pathways by which they can eliminate the hydrogen peroxide.
Combining IV vitamin C with nutritional ketosis and fasting for 14 to 48 hours before and during chemo has been shown to produce even more remarkable results, as detailed in a recent interview with Dr. Abdul Slocum.
In certain cases, Connealy will add vitamin K3 to her vitamin C protocol. K3 is a synthetic form of vitamin K2, designed for tumors that have high catalase. In addition to these natural agents, most of which are rotated, not given all at once, she uses supportive oligonucleotide technique (SOT) therapy.
SOT therapy involves taking circulating tumor cells and reverse engineering a messenger RNA (mRNA) to disrupt the DNA of the circulating tumor cells. That mRNA is then given back intravenously, and has a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week targeted killing effect that lasts for about four and a half months. While it cannot be used for masses (tumors), it attacks the circulating tumor cells, which are responsible for 95 percent of metastasis and death.

Treatment Alternatives: Cryotherapy, IPT Chemo and Hyperthermic Therapy

While surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are a standard part of conventional cancer care, Connealy does things a bit differently. For example, she recently started working with an interventional radiologist who does cryotherapy, which is where you freeze the cells.
“I had a patient with a very large grapefruit-sized tumor on her right chest wall, a neuroendocrine tumor. She had breast cancer on her left breast and a neuroendocrine tumor [on her right]. She’d already been treated by other doctors [who] said they could not do anything. She came to see me. The neuroendocrine tumor is now gone from the cryo procedure. The left [tumor] is partially gone …
If it’s something small that we can approach, I will recommend cryo because surgery is a very intrusive procedure … In some patients, you do everything [to] get rid of the tumor burden because the tumor burden is immunosuppressant. Patients may need chemo. If I have patients who have cancer in multiple locations in the body, I will recommend IPT chemo. That’s insulin potentiation therapy with chemo.
IPT chemo is using a low-dose chemo after I do the sensitivity testing with RGCC. It will tell me the ideal agents for these particular patients. We will make a cocktail. We give insulin. It lowers the blood sugar to a therapeutic moment. We give the chemo drugs … and then we drop a bag of sugar.
I also got a machine from France called iTherm. I’ve been using the iTherm machine on some cancers. When you get your RGCC testing, it tells me whether your cells respond to heat shock protein. It will tell me the three different proteins and the sensitivity.
Specific cancers, like breast cancer, [are] very easy to treat with the hyperthermia machine. We trained with the doctor in France who only allows integrative treatments if you have stage 3 or 4 cancer. He spent a lot of time with us in conference calls, elaborating us on this particular treatment protocol.
I will combine that with mistletoe, an immune-modulating natural substance. We combine all those things together. Because the first thing we have to do if we have lots of tumor burden is to … shrink it down to a manageable problem. Then if it’s easily accessible with a cryo or a surgical procedure, we will do that. I’ve had cases where a breast tumor of 9 centimeters with low-dose chemo and hypodermic mistletoe goes down to nothing in one month.”

More Information

Connealy has done a great job of compiling a variety of valuable resources into her book, “The Cancer Revolution.” If you or someone you love is faced with cancer, it’s definitely worth reading. To learn more about Connealy’s clinic and to purchase her book, please visit www.connealymd.com/.
As for finding an open-minded oncologist or doctor willing to implement these kinds of integrative methods, an organization called The Best Answer for Cancer is a helpful resource that lists qualified physicians. You can find more information at www.bestanswerforcancer.org. It's a hybrid non-profit that services both integrative physicians and patients with cancer and other chronic disease.
I also recently interviewed Dr. William LaValley, who has created state-of-the-art databases of studies covering the molecular biology of cancer, and the anti-cancer benefits of nutritional supplements and repurposed drugs (drugs used off-label). Keep your eye out for that important interview, which should be published shortly. LaValley also trains and collaborates with oncologists and physicians to treat cancer patients using evidence-based molecularly targeted treatments.
You can find more information on his website, lavalleymdprotocols.com. This is yet another resource both you and your doctor can peruse. Last but not least, while integrative cancer treatments are showing great promise, please remember that your day-to-day choices play a paramount role in your treatment success. As noted by Connealy:
“Optimize your eating, your detox, your hormones, inflammatory nutrient levels. Don’t go spend $10,000 or $20,000 on a procedure in a dirty body. Get your body prepared. I prepare my patients two weeks before they even have a surgical procedure. Don’t go have surgery when you don’t have good nutrient levels, when you don’t have a good immune system, when you have inflammation. Get the body ready. The outcome would be outrageously improved.”
One of the things virtually all of us can do is to make food choices that allow your body to burn fat as its primary fuel. I describe a modified ketogenic cyclical diet that accomplishes this in my book “Fat for Fuel.” Even if you’re choosing conventional therapy, nutritional ketosis can be tremendously helpful.

This Overlooked Body System Can Give You Cancer if You Neglect It

I think it’s safe to say that few people wake up in the morning thinking about their lymph system. You don’t see it, feel it, or touch it. Most people probably don’t know a thing about it.
It could be one of the most ignored systems in your body. It quietly does its job – or doesn’t – depending. . .
Yet because its primary job is to usher toxins out of your body, a healthy lymph system is vitally important for your health and wellbeing.
Mainstream health care professionals tend to ignore this. Have you ever heard your doctor tell you to take care of this invisible system? Probably not.
Read on… because an unhealthy lymph system is a sure way to magnetically attract diseases, from cancer to acne and so much more.

Never take this “Cinderella” for granted
Like hard-working Cinderella, your lymph labors quietly in the background to clean up the messes almost every other system in your body makes.
The lymphatic system is undervalued by Western medicine – regarded as an inferior sister to your circulatory system. That’s in sharp contrast to Ayurvedic medicine, which lavishes a great deal of attention on lymph.
Ayurveda considers your lymphatic system to be one of seven major body systems – and the very first to be compromised from stress.
In the Sanskrit language of ancient India, the more meanings a single word has, the more critical its role.
The Sanskrit word for lymph is rasa – which is also used to express emotion, taste, juice, nutrient fluid, plasma, water, menses, semen, breast milk, melody, satisfaction, and love.
Traditional Chinese medicine has a similar take. Practitioners believe poor lymph health triggers a host of conditions, from cellulite to cancer.
Bigger than your blood circulatory system
Remarkably, you have twice as much lymph fluid in your body as you have blood.
Your lymph bathes all your cells and drains away debris, nonstop.
But unlike blood, which has the heart to keep things moving, the lymph system lacks an “automated” pump to keep lymph fluid circulating.
Amazingly enough, only your breathing and movement can power this vast circulatory system. If your lymph completely stopped moving, you’d die in a matter of hours. Hint: This means our sedentary lifestyles are taking a terrible toll on our health.
So it’s not something to take lightly… even if your doctor never mentions it.
Like your blood circulatory system, your lymph system serves nearly every cell in your body. Lymph nodes look like tiny pearls knotted on a string. But they’re not there to look pretty. They are the cleaning filters for your lymph fluid.
One of the most crucial functions of your lymph is to generate and store white blood cells (WBC) – the ones that fight infections.
Other key lymph organs include your bone marrow (where WBC B-lymphocytes are made), spleen, tonsils, and thymus gland (where T-lymphocytes are made).
Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphocytes. Lymphoma is actually an umbrella terms that includes a number of different lymph cancers. Taken together, they account for about 74,000 new cancer diagnoses per year.
That’s fewer than breast cancer (247,000) and prostate cancer (181,000), but still enough to make lymphoma a bigger concern than, say, melanoma skin cancer, which receives a great deal of publicity but is pretty rare.
“Central Command” for your lymphatic system
Your biggest concentration of lymph surrounds your gut… appropriately called gut-associated lymphatic tissue, or GALT.
Consider GALT your gatekeeper. Or cupbearer, if you will. During Bible times, cupbearers were important and trusted servants whose responsibilities included preventing the king from being poisoned – whether accidentally or as part of an assassination attempt.
Your GALT “tastes” and then separates good nutrients from bad pathogens, and mounts a defense, calling on your immune and endocrine systems as needed.
It is “Command Central” for your lymphatic system.
Your lymph’s Job #1 is to detect infection and cellular debris and get rid of it… including pathogens or antigens that create an immune response, dead cells, live infections, and undigested proteins (e.g. casein and gluten).
Your lymph system moves fluid through a series of ever-widening vessels along some 500 filtration and collection points. At each successive node the fluid is re-filtered and more pathogens are removed.
If your lymph fluid is blocked at one lymph node, it will seek out a detour. Extreme blockage can cause fluid to back up, causing the swelling called lymphedema. Lymphedema can disable or disfigure. Conventional breast cancer treatments are the most common cause of lymphedema.
Though your lymph vessels are networked far and wide through your system, they merge at certain points to form trunks.
Is your lymph system sluggish or backed up?
If your lymph system gets sluggish – because of surgery, illness, toxins or lack of activity – your lymph fluid can back up. Stagnant lymph can go unnoticed for a long time. But eventually you’ll have to pay the piper.
Think about rivers. A healthy river runs clean and clear. But a stagnant, brackish river — overrun with soot, sludge, silt, and other pollutants — is a perfect breeding ground for pathogens and disease.
Since your lymph cleanses nearly every cell in your body, backed-up lymph fluid can manifest in many different ways — including but not limited to allergies and food sensitivities, acne, joint pain, arthritis, frequent colds and flu, headaches and migraines, PMS, fibrocystic breasts, sinusitis, digestive problems, loss of appetite, foggy thinking, mood problems and depression, cellulite, parasites, muscle cramps, and general fatigue.
Stagnant lymph also blocks your ability to cleanse hazards such as dangerous bacteria and cancer cells.
Swollen lymph nodes usually mean an infection is present in the area those nodes drain. Chinese doctors call it “excessive damp.” It undermines your overall health.
When your lymph system is up to par, it catches viruses, bacteria, and cancerous or mutagenic cells, engulfing and destroying them. It even customizes antibodies to attack particular pathogens.
If your doctor ever says this
about your spleen, watch out!
Some doctors are quick to remove a swollen spleen to prevent a hemorrhage or rupturing.
In Eastern medicine — where the spleen and lymph are taken very seriously — that’s equivalent to clipping a bird’s wings. Sure, it’ll live. But it’ll never fly very high again.
Your spleen is there for a reason. Cutting it out almost always has damaging long-term immune effects. Giving it the support it needs to heal from the inside out is far better than removing it.
12 ways to get your lymphatic system in top shape
1. Rebounding (mini-trampoline)
Rebounding on a small trampoline, three or four feet in diameter, is a godsend for moving lymph. Some reports estimate that it boosts lymph flow by 15 to 30 times.
Every time you bounce you boost the gravitational pull on your lymph. You get low-level “G’s” (or G-force), much as you do from sudden changes of speed in a sports car or fair ride.
On a large garden trampoline you’ll likely get up to about 8 G’s. On a small mini-trampoline with a tight center, you’ll get 2 to 3 G’s, depending on your weight. This is more effective for stimulating your lymph.
NASA’s own research found that rebounding was more effective and efficient than jogging.
At the top of your bounce, your body momentarily enjoys total weightlessness, even at a gentle pulse.
Rebounders are also very cost effective – although as usual, you get what you pay for. And a more resistant spring is better than a loose one. Consider a stabilizer bar add-on if you’re afraid of falling.
Some people find it fun to bounce up and down on a rebounder. I find it pretty boring to do for the recommended 15 minutes a day, plus it hurts my back, so I do other types of exercise that are more agreeable for me. But if you can keep it up as a daily routine, it’s probably your best option for a healthy lymph system.
2. Chi machines
Chi machines are another system intended to get your lymph moving. Basically, you lie on the floor on your back with your ankles resting on a vibrating machine (the ankle rests sit atop the vibrator). I’ve encountered chi machines at alternative cancer clinics, and I can testify that they shake you up pretty thoroughly.
I don’t know whether there’s any scientific evidence that they accomplish their goal (unlike rebounders, which are validated by some NASA research). They’re available on the net and cost from one hundred to two hundred dollars.
3. Diet
Reduce your body’s toxic burden by choosing whole, organic, unprocessed foods whenever possible. Eat as few carbs as you can, and eliminate sugar entirely. The less waste your lymph has to deal with, the more readily it flows.
4. Avoid pesticides
Same idea as cleaning up your diet… it keeps your lymph cleaner.
5. Water
Swap soda, juices, and other sugary and additive-filled drinks for real, pure water. Your body needs true hydration to keep fluids moving. Add fresh squeezed lemon to your water for flavor and alkalinity.
6. Walk
Health experts tout the benefits of walking to move your lymph. Mind you, this isn’t leisurely strolling as if you’re window-shopping at the mall. It’s brisk walking – ideally with exaggerated arm movements – and stimulates the many lymph nodes in your upper body, armpits, neck and shoulders.
You also get a certain amount of gravitational pull with every step, especially if you walk at a brisk pace with a slight spring in your step.
7. Dry Brush
Before showering, use a dry brush with natural bristles and brush your skin with long strokes in an upward motion, toward the heart, for about five minutes to improve lymph flow. You can find a great deal of information about how to do it on the Internet.
8. Sleep
A recent study found that when you sleep, special lymph channels in your brain – known as the glymphatic system – open up and drain dangerous neurotoxins into your cerebral spinal fluid.1,2
These glymphatics are like hidden caves that open during sleep to drain toxins like the well-known beta-amyloid plaque of dementia notoriety.
The study suggested it takes six to eight hours to complete this process, which is compelling evidence that sound, regular sleep is essential to good health (I hope you already knew that).
9. Wear loose clothing
Wearing tight clothing for long periods of time can restrict lymph flow and trigger blockages. Some authorities believe underwire or tight bras, and tight jeans and skirts can impede lymph flow.
10. Beauty Products
Most commercial beauty products from makeup to shampoo and sunscreens are loaded with questionable chemicals that end up in your lymphatic system. As with eating clean food and avoiding pesticides, you won’t create as much “trash” for your lymph system to clean up if you use chemical-free versions.
11. Herbs
Certain herbs can boost lymph flow and expedite toxin removal… among them are red clover, cleavers (also called clivers or goosegrass), and, from Ayurveda, manjistha, an herb known for its ability to de-stagnate lymph.
12. Massage
Everyone loves massage. I get one every two weeks, and have for many years. I think any kind of good massage helps stimulate lymph circulation, but there IS a specific type of lymph massage designed to do so, using special motions. Studies show it can push up to 78 percent of stagnant lymph back into circulation.
In my opinion, it’s essential for a cancer patient to stimulate lymph circulation by doing pretty much ALL of these things (you can choose either the rebounder or the chi machine; you don’t have to do both). Every one of these recommendations benefits you in multiple ways besides just moving lymph fluids.
You need healthy lymph now more than ever, because mainstream medicine has just newly identified five viruses that cause cancer. If you missed the news in our last issue, check it out now just below.

When it comes to revitalizing your health, reversing illness, and just making you feel great, few things compare to an infrared sauna.
Infrared saunas are clinically shown to help fight cancer, reduce blood pressure, relieve pain, reverse heart disease, promote weight loss, and give you a host of other health benefits.
The deep healing power of infrared energy
Ever get in a car on a sunny day in winter? Wonder how it feels so warm inside when the air outside is freezing? That's the infrared light from the sun.
In this same way, infrared saunas penetrate up to 1-1/2 inches below your skin to detoxify and revitalize your cells. This produces a deep, detoxifying sweat that eliminates toxins at the cellular level. Infrared energy is powerful, yet it's so safe it's used in hospitals to warm newborn infants.
Using infrared saunas to fight cancer
Over 2,000 years ago, the famous Greek physician Parmenides said, "Give me the power to create fever, and I will cure any disease." Cancer clinics in Germany and Mexico are putting this principle to use. They routinely treat patients with hyperthermia, where the body is exposed to high temperatures. High temperatures can kill cancer cells, usually without damage to normal tissues.1
Most of the German cancer clinics that I've visited use both infrared hyperthermia and infrared saunas for their patients, and so do many of the Mexican clinics. Infrared saunas provide a form of whole-body hyperthermia that boosts your health in many ways. You can even enjoy infrared sauna at home, as I’ll explain in a moment.
According to Dr. Charles Majors, author of The Cancer Killers, The Cause Is The Cure, infrared heat can eliminate cancer, viruses, parasites, increase immunity and help speed up detoxification. "Infrared sauna therapy is a much deeper tissue penetration of heat, creating all of its benefits versus a traditional sauna."
Dr. Majors notes that infrared sauna therapy for cancer offers a combination of healing mechanisms including:
1. Hyperthermia - Heat kills abnormal cells. Cancer cells cannot tolerate heat, so they become weaker and much easier to kill. Raising body temperature can cause their death.
2. Increases Sweating- The sweating process gently and safely helps eliminate all heavy metals and toxic chemicals. Medical studies demonstrate that most toxins can be eliminated through the skin, relieving some burden on the kidneys and liver.
3. Increase Immunity- Infrared Saunas enhance white blood cell function, thereby increasing immunity and helping kill Cancer, infections, viruses, etc.
4. Help detox heavy metals- Using an infrared sauna increases detoxification of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, aluminum, nickel and many others. These metals accumulate in our bodies causing many health issues, symptoms and disease, including cancer.
5. Raises your body temperature- helps the body kill bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. Many people have a low body temperature and, for this reason, cannot get rid of chronic infections.2
Infrared treatment shrinks
tumor volumes 86% in 30 days
In a clinical study published in the Journal of Cancer Science and
Therapy
, scientists studied far infrared's effects on human cancer cells in vitro and on cancer cells in mice. Far infrared therapy reduced tumor volumes 86% in 30 days. The tumor-suppressing effects were even seen without high temperatures, even as low as 77 degrees Fahrenheit.3
In another study, researchers in Japan discovered that whole-body hyperthermia with far infrared strongly inhibited the growth of breast cancer tumors in mice without deleterious side effects. Researchers believe this therapy is promising for long-term studies of a noninvasive treatment of breast cancer.4
The healing power of 'cellular cleansing'
Most of us don't sweat enough regularly. We live in air conditioned homes, cars, and offices. We use antiperspirants and most of us don't exercise enough. But your body was designed to sweat. And sweat is a key way to cleanse your body.
The infrared sauna is a powerful means of cellular cleansing. It increases your metabolism and boosts blood circulation. It also relaxes your muscles, soothes your spirit and rejuvenates your entire body.
The deep penetration of infrared heat releases toxins from the fat layers just beneath the skin. It also helps your body eliminate toxins from your internal organs. These toxins pass from the organs to the fat tissue under the skin. Then they are eliminated in perspiration.
To see how this works, researchers analyzed the sweat from both traditional and infrared saunas. Sweat from traditional saunas was about 97% water and 3% toxins. Infrared saunas produced a sweat that was only 80 — 85% water. The remaining 15-20% was made up of heavy metals, sulfuric acid, sodium, ammonia, uric acid and fat-soluble toxins.5
The secret to effortless detox
If you're a regular reader of this newsletter, you're well aware of the toxins we're all exposed to in modern life. You also know well that many of these toxins in our food, water and air are believed to be a major cause of increased cancer rates. If you want to prevent or reverse cancer, you not only need to reduce your intake of toxins, you also need a regular program to get these poisons out of your body.
Infrared heat is incredibly powerful because it helps you cleanse at the cellular level and release toxins stored in your fat cells. Infrared saunas are also powerful because they're such a simple, easy way to detox compared to fasting, exercise, colon cleansing, and other detox therapies.
Natural weight loss
It is no secret that maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall quality of life. In fact, a 10-year study published by The New England Journal of Medicine found that waist circumference by itself is a critical factor in assessing the risk of premature death. In other words, if you can maintain a healthy weight, you increase your likelihood of a longer, healthier life.
Did you know that you now have basically the same number of fat cells as you did when you were born? Fat cells develop during the third trimester of pregnancy and you keep the same number your whole life. So how do you gain weight? Your fat cells store fat like a sponge that soaks up water. Infrared saunas help release fat (and the toxins stored in the fat) like squeezing water out of a sponge.
Infrared saunas have been clinically shown to dramatically aid in weight loss. A 2009 study showed that infrared saunas provide significant results in lowering weight and waist circumference in just 3 months. And for those who are sedentary due to medical conditions such as osteoarthritis, cardiovascular or respiratory problems, results were even more profound.6
Burn up to 600 calories while sitting still!
According to information published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, infrared sauna sessions were shown to burn upwards of 600 calories. During a sauna weight loss session, your core temperature increases and the body works hard to cool itself. While using an infrared sauna, there is a substantial increase in blood flow, heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate, causing the body to burn more calories.7
Regular use of an infrared sauna may be an effective means of cardiovascular conditioning and burning of calories, akin to regular exercise. Using an infrared sauna is like giving yourself a passive cardio workout — whenever you need it!
As someone who always means to exercise and seldom gets around to it, I appreciate an easy way to get some of the benefits.
Drug-free pain relief
Infrared rays also help you naturally reduce pain and inflammation. Infrared sauna heat works by penetrating joints, muscles and tissues. It increases circulation, and boosts oxygen flow to the tissues. By reducing soreness on nerve endings, infrared heat reduces muscle spasms and helps the body heal itself naturally.
Infrared saunas are proven relief for sports injuries, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, joint pain/stiffness and other chronic pain conditions.
According to Dr. Jeffrey Spencer, a sports medicine expert from the University of Southern California and consultant to Lance Armstrong, "infrared wavelengths penetrate the body to create heat, which creates profound therapeutic benefits. They increase blood flow to the muscles, delivering more concentrated oxygen, which creates more energy to heal."
  • Significant Reduction in Chronic Pain: A study reported in Clinical Rheumatology showed that infrared saunas gave significant relief for patients with chronic pain (such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis). Four weeks of 30-minute, twice-weekly sessions in an infrared sauna resulted in a 40 percent improvement in pain and stiffness (for rheumatoid arthritis) and 60 percent (for ankylosing spondylitis).8
  • 70% Less Pain AFTER JUST ONE SESSION! A recent study published in Internal Medicine, showed that patients with chronic pain saw their pain levels drop by nearly 70% after their first session of infrared sauna therapy. Pain scores remained low throughout the observation period.9
  • Increase Flexibility Up to 300% A study conducted at the Auburn University at Montgomery compared stretching in a full spectrum infrared sauna compared to a typical training room environment. Participants completed a series of hamstring stretches in random order with 48 hours separating the sessions. Results showed that acute flexibility increased up to 3x in the sauna than without! Benefits to the increased range of motion include joint mobility, less friction in the joints, enabling of joint function to diminish stiffness and joint relaxation. View study.
Reduce blood pressure WITHOUT drugs
Infrared saunas have been clinically shown to provide one of the best, natural ways to lower blood pressure. In a 2005 clinical study by the University of Missouri Kansas City, infrared saunas were shown to lower blood pressure through a program of 30-minute infrared sauna sessions just three times per week.
The study concluded that infrared sauna therapy dilated blood vessels and reduced the thickness of their inner lining. This increased circulation and promoted healthy blood pressure.10
What's more, a Japanese study published in the October 2008 issue ofThe Journal of Cardiology examined the clinical effectiveness and safety of infrared blood pressure therapy, as compared to standard therapies for patients with chronic heart failure. The report concluded that far-infrared sauna therapy is both safe and effective at improving clinical symptoms and cardiac function in chronic heart failure patients. Repeated infrared sauna treatments improved impaired blood vessel functions in patients with high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. This suggests a preventive role for infrared sauna use for arteriosclerosis.11
Reverse heart disease
A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed that infrared saunas help improve the function of impaired vascular endothelial cells in patients who are at risk for coronary artery disease. The infrared heat of the sauna opens capillaries to improve blood flow. 15 minutes in an infrared sauna each day for 14 days improved the function of the endothelial cells lining the arteries by 40%.12
Research also shows that infrared saunas help:
  • Relieve arrhythmias: A clinical study explored the therapeutic use of infrared saunas for patients in the end-stage of congestive heart failure. It showed that saunas helped relieve arrhythmias (an irregularity in the force or rhythm of the heartbeat).13
  • Improve congestive heart failure: In the Journal of Cardiac Failure, researchers reported statistical improvements in blood pressure, strength of heart (ejection fraction on echocardiogram), and exercise tolerance in patients treated with saunas. Saunas also helped reduce the number of hospital admissions for this condition.14
Other important health benefits
It's hard to think of an aspect of health and wellness that infrared saunas don't benefit. But other clinical studies show that infrared saunas can help you:
  • Relieve Depression: A study published in Psychosomatic Medicine looked at a group of 28 mildly depressed patients. Half of the patients utilized an infrared sauna once a day for 4 weeks and the other half had just bed rest for 4 weeks. The sauna group showed a significant improvement compared to the control group.15
  • Boost Your Immunity: Infrared saunas are clinically shown to help patients with weak immune systems, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. MRSA is a potentially deadly bacterial infection that is resistant to most antibiotics. Infrared therapy knocked out the MRSA pathogens without causing increased inflammation.16 Another study from NASA showed that near infrared therapy, delivered by LEDs deep into body tissue, can quadruple cell health and tissue growth.
  • Give You Healthier, Younger-Looking Skin: A study published in The Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapyshowed significant improvements in skin appearance after just 12 weeks of sauna skin therapy using near-infrared technology. Participants saw a reduction in wrinkles and crow's feet, as well as improved overall skin tone, including softness, smoothness, elasticity, clarity and firmness.17
The health-boosting power of light
Most infrared saunas on the market produce only far infrared. However, a new development in the field is full-spectrum infrared. These are saunas that provide all of the benefits associated with far-, mid- and near-infrared rays. For instance, near-infrared energy stimulates the body's natural healing powers. Scientists call this photobiomodulation. In cancer patients, near-infrared is used for healing chemotherapy-induced ulcers and wound healing.18
Boost your cellular energy
for supercharged healing
Near-infrared energy boosts your cells' ability to create energy. This can help stimulate your immune system and your overall healing. It helps your liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, skin, and other detox organs to neutralize toxins and work at peak efficiency. To create energy, the mitochondria (the power-generating centers inside every cell) depend on an enzyme called Cytochrome c oxidase.
Studies show that infrared therapy recharges mitochondria. It boosts their levels of oxygen and cytochrome c oxidase. This can help you maintain a cellular energy level that's usually only seen in young people.
How to use infrared saunas
If you're already in good health, a 30-40 minute sauna session three or more times a week will do. Or if you're trying to heal a specific health condition, some doctors prescribe daily or even multiple sessions each day.21
You can try an infrared sauna at a local health club, spa, or massage therapist. A typical fee is $30-$45 per 30-minute session. I also recommend purchasing one yourself. An excellent, cutting-edge manufacturer is Sunlighten, offering clinically backed 3-in-1 infrared saunas with a simple plug-and-heat design for easy home installation. Visit their website or call 1-877-292-0020. Another reputable (albeit more expensive) brand is TheraSauna. Infrared saunas, with their myriad health benefits, are definitely an at-home therapy option worth checking out.
If you decide to contact these companies you should mention that you read about infrared saunas in Cancer Defeated. But please be aware that these companies can’t give you advice about treatment for cancer or any other disease. It’s against the law for them to do that. You’d be wasting your time and theirs to ask what saunas can do for cancer and probably for most other health conditions. That’s why you need to read Cancer Defeated (and other sources of health information.) We have the first amendment right to tell you what supplement marketers and other vendors aren’t allowed to.
