Never buy peanut butter in plastic jars: US expert’s warning

A leading expert has warned shoppers against buying peanut butter in plastic jars, claiming it’s “among the most toxic foods out there”.

Tamara Rubin is a leading US child health advocate who’s well known for her work in testing a range of consumer goods for poisons such as lead and arsenic.

The expert is highly regarded for her lead-poisoning prevention work, creating headlines with her investigations into the concerning levels of lead and arsenic that can be found some lines of vintage kitchenware and children’s toys.

Her advocacy has been covered in print in the New York Times, New York Post and USA Today, as well as major US networks CNN, ABC, NBC and Fox.

Now she’s alerting consumers to the potential dangers of purchasing peanut butter that’s been stored in plastic jars, saying it’s like “eating plastic” and “one of the most toxic foods you can purchase”.

“This is a little bit of advice I have personally been sharing with friends for 17 years now, and I thought it would be good to put it out there to the world,” Rubin claimed.

“Here’s the advice: Don’t ever buy any kind of peanut butter in plastic containers.

“Even organic peanut butter should not be bought in plastic containers.”

Rubin said her colleague Lee Hitchcox originally wrote about the potential dangers in his book, Long Life Now: Strategies for Staying Alive.

She said the concerns stem from the way that peanut butter is processed before its placed in plastic jars.

“Most of the peanut butter on the grocery store shelves (even in many ‘natural foods’ stores) already contains pesticide and/or fungicide residues, tons of sugar and a host of other additives,” she claimed.

“Peanut butter must also be heated to flow through the machinery for it to be quickly, easily and consistently poured into jars (plastic jars are also often then heat-sealed – the sealing of the combination foil-type/plastic barrier that is usually found under the lid for food safety reasons.)

“The concern is that the now hot oils/fats in the peanut butter help the plasticisers (in the plastic jars and lids) leach into the food, and along with all the other chemical residues and additives, make for an incredibly toxic product.

“The plasticisers bond to the oil in the peanut butter as a result of the packaging process.

“The consumer is then eating plastic… which is why peanut butter packed in plastic is one of the most toxic foods you can purchase.”

As a result, Rubin says she only buys peanut butter in glass jars - and implores others to do the same.

Rubin has also released details of results from plastic peanut butter testing, and says her claims are backed up by the findings.

Curious Cook: The peculiar case of food allergies

No story about allergies would be complete without discussing the peculiarly nasty Texas Lone Star tick. It is an aggressive insect which is aroused by the carbon dioxide in the breaths of mammals and it will vigorously pursue its victims. This tick also has vile cousins such as the Castor Bean tick in Europe and the Paralysis tick in Australia.

The Texas Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is curious because one bite from this insect can induce a permanent allergy to red meat in humans. This allergy cannot be cured and is spreading rapidly across the USA as warmer temperatures encourage this tick’s migration northwards. The allergy can induce a dangerous reaction called anaphylaxis – untreated, this can lead to death, and many thousands of people are afflicted though actual numbers are unclear as it is not a condition American doctors routinely monitor.

The Alpha-Gal

The interesting aspect of this allergy is that the allergen (or compound causing the allergic reaction) is specific, well-known and therefore easy to research. The allergen is an oligosaccharide (or complex sugar) called galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, often shortened to alpha-gal. This sugar is found in the muscles of most mammals, except for monkeys, apes and humans – and alpha-gal is also the reason why organ transplants from animals into humans never work.
In unafflicted people, ingested red meat (including alpha-gal) processes normally through the digestive system with no issues. However, the bite of the Lone Star tick introduces a dose of alpha-gal into the bloodstream and presence of alpha-gal in human blood plasma provokes the production of an antibody called Immunoglobulin M (IgM). The presence of IgM then triggers a robust reaction from a potent antibody called Immunoglobulin E (IgE).

The danger of being allergic to alpha-gal is the body often reacts only after the digestive system has processed the ingested meat, perhaps hours later. So for years, people were keeling over for unknown reasons, resulting in several mysterious deaths of ostensibly healthy people. IgE is normally utilised to immunise the body against parasitic infections from helminths (parasitic worms) such as Schistosoma mansoni, Trichinella spiralis, Fasciola hepatica, etc. Once activated, such immunity exists for life, which is why alpha-gal allergy is incurable, because it becomes part of the body’s range of auto-immune responses.
People with this allergy may also have reactions to fumes arising from cooking meat or skin contact with animals.
Certainty
So one certainty about allergies is that if an allergen is well-known and universally acknowledged to cause a permanent reaction such as alpha-gal allergy, then it is well worth avoiding the vector of transmission, in this case the Lone Star tick.
Nobody knows why alpha-gal is so fiercely targeted by IgM and then IgE – perhaps it is the shape of the molecule (it has a hydroxyl pair in an odd location). Also, in populations where 20% of people have suffered bites from Lone Star ticks, not everyone bitten actually developed alpha-gal allergy.

The less known

But what if allergens are not well known or established? A classic example would be non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) where it is still unclear whether the gliadins in gluten, fructans or FODMAPs (Fermentable, Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides And Polyols) are responsible for the condition. This was investigated in my article, The Strange Story of Gluten.

Crossover

At first glance, there would not seem much of a connection between house dust mites (HDM) and crustaceans. But studies have indicated an allergic link between them – probably due to a protein called tropomyosin. This protein is also present in mammals and is explained in my article, A Tender Moment.
However, tropomyosins in invertebrates differ in molecular structure from tropomyosin in vertebrates. A 2016 paper researching an increase in crustacean allergies in Singapore suggested the rise was linked to tropomyosin found in HDM. Large scale studies indicate crustacean allergies now affect over 5% of Singaporean teenagers, over 7% of the population of Taiwan and around 7 million Americans.

How this crossover sensitisation occurs may be explained in an earlier 2007 US paper which suggested that invertebrate tropomyosins are digested/decomposed into larger peptide fragments (such as Pepsin A) than meat-based tropomyosins – a peptide is a short chain of amino acids (which are building blocks of proteins).
For HDM, the tropomyosin may have entered the bloodstream via contaminated food or possibly via the nasal cavity. These large peptide fragments in the bloodstream may be detected as foreign bodies, especially by IgE antibodies, thus provoking an autoimmune reaction to the invertebrate tropomyosins. In Singapore, research found 72.4% of crustacean-sensitised children were also sensitive to HDM. Another small study of 95 Canadians had a 90.5% rate of dual-sensitisation.
The strong link suggests that it does not matter if an allergy to HDM proteins led to crustacean sensitivity or the other way around. If you are interested, some problematic HDM species identified are Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. The allergy to crustacean tropomyosin is the most sensitive allergic reaction known to man – a very tiny amount can trigger deadly anaphylaxis and it is the allergy which sends the most people into hospitals every year.

Gut and general allergens

Genes

A 2015 study claimed that human eczema involves only as few as 21 genes in our genome of around 20,000 genes. This is followed by a 2018 paper claiming that hay fever is due to the expression of only up to 41 genes. Hay fever is interesting because it was only first documented in the 19th century. A physician called John Bostock searched the whole of Britain at the time for patients but could only come up with 28 sufferers.

Nowadays, hay fever is an epidemic – and the multitude of hay fever medications on chemist shelves prove it. The oddity is air in most places has been getting cleaner, not dirtier, since the 19th century – this should logically reduce incidences of hay fever. Therefore, even if hay fever has a genetic basis, other factors must be involved as humans have had the same genes for many thousands of years.

Energy requirement

The human immune system is a powerful system which prevents infections arising from breaches of the skin, respiratory system or from ingestion of tainted foods. It requires a surprising amount of energy. Battling an infection can raise body temperatures by, say, around 1°C and this will draw 150% of the energy used by a highly energetic organ such as the heart.
In addition, energy is required to produce new antibodies, macrophages and other defensive cells/structures and transport them to the required destinations.
Early avoidance
The UK-based Learn Early About Peanut allergy study involved 600+ infants between 4 to 11 months old with severe eczema and/or egg allergy – these subjects are normally prone to also develop an allergy to peanuts in later life.
From 11 months, randomly-selected infants were fed peanuts and overall results collated when they reached age 5. The data was startling. Of the children fed with peanuts, only 3% developed an allergy to peanuts while 17% of the children who had avoided peanuts acquired an allergy to peanuts. The conclusion was therefore: Early avoidance of an allergen is likely to later cause an allergy to the allergen.

Avoidance of allergens may explain the exponential rise in hay fever cases in the modern world. Even in the 19th century, the people most likely to develop allergies were the wealthy, who insulated their homes from the dust and pollen outside. Studies into genetically-related people living in different environments (e.g. urban Finnish and rural Russians of Karelia) also established that urban communities with less exposure to environmental allergens are more likely to develop allergies.

Possibility

Allergies can occur any time in life and it is curious why immune systems suddenly choose to attack previously benign substances for seemingly no reason. One explanation might be the inherent strength of our immune system, which had evolved to protect humans against challenging environments.
Our Palaeolithic ancestors were nomads, continually encountering wildly-different foods along with bacterial, fungal and parasitic fauna in different locations. Survival relied on strong immune systems capable of constantly countering a broad spectrum of hazards.
It is therefore feasible modern allergen-free environments can result in autoimmune responses being misled and over-sensitised towards compounds which would normally not be threats. The full capacity of an under-utilised immune system can get misdirected towards anything arbitrarily considered foreign or anomalous, even if it is harmless.

The sun

A joint US/Australian study into geographic patterns of food allergies has found a link to non-exposure to sunlight (and possibly a deficit of Vitamin D). A lack of sunlight, especially in heavily urbanised areas, causes infants to triple the risk of getting an egg allergy and up to 11 times more risk of a peanut allergy.

Conclusion

Our immune system had evolved in natural environments which were vastly different from the modern, urban conditions most humans now live in. A lack of contact/access to natural allergens/conditions/sunlight is probably a significant driver in the epidemic of modern-day allergies. This is supported by strong links between rising numbers of allergies and urbanisation, though there are still other factors involved.

An enlightening report recently emerged revealing that the linoleic acid (LA) concentration of fat tissue in American adults has skyrocketed by about 136 percent over the last decade. It's not so much that people are eating more fats but that the "bad fat" is taking over.
You might be wondering why America seems to be fatter and sicker than ever before, when so much focus is on losing weight and eating a "healthier" diet. Part of the problem is that one person's idea of "healthy" is vastly different from another's and, often, vastly different from reality.
Is it true that eating "fat free" or "low fat" foods helps you lose weight? How come it's not working? And why do the U.S. Dietary Guidelines,1 the American Heart Association and many doctors maintain that vegetable and seed oils are better for your heart when there's so much evidence to the contrary?

Getting to the Bottom of Real and Fake Fat

Adipose tissue, the technical term for fat, is actually a crucial part of your body, as it contains the blood vessels and nerve cells necessary for storing energy and releasing hormones. Fat also insulates your body.
Linoleic acid, concentrated in seed or vegetable oils like corn and canola oil, is the polyunsaturated fat that's most prevalent in foods today, but its modus operandi — the way it accumulates in fat tissue — is what concerns researchers today.
Neurobiologist and obesity research Stephan Guyenet, who studied the disturbing trend, pooled resources with co-researcher Susan Carlson, a University of Kansas nutrition researcher, to produce a paper revealing that over the last 50 years, the linoleic acid concentration of fat tissue in American adults has shot upward by a shocking 136 percent.
Their research captured criteria from 37 studies between 1960 and 2010, which underscored the steady and consistent trajectory over those five decades and continues today. They also found a "strong correlation" between the linoleic acid we eat and the linoleic acid in our fat tissue.

Note that seeds like sunflower seeds are good for you because they are in whole form and haven't been subject to the chemical processing used to extract their oils.

What's so Bad About Vegetable Oils?

The irony is that vegetable oils are often referred to as "heart healthy," but science doesn't support it. The whole idea was based on shelf life and economics. Vegetable oils remain fluid at room temperature, which adds to its convenience and shelf life, which is good for manufacturers and retailers.
The hydrogenation process, another problem that has emerged with the processing of seed oils to create the more solid oil forms for margarine and shortening, is another topic, but related to the health problems stemming from the ways vegetable oils are produced.
With the adoption of polyunsaturated oils, the natural fats such as butter that our forebears were raised on were cast aside. As America turned to vegetable oils, which are a concentrated source of linoleic acid, LA in body fat climbed at a remarkably similar rate. Handpicked Nation reported:
"Before 1920 coronary heart disease was rare in America. But during the next forty years, the incidence rose dramatically and by the mid-1950s heart disease was the leading cause of death among Americans. What happened?
During 1910–1970 the proportion of traditional animal fat in the American diet declined from 83% to 62% and butter consumption plummeted from 18 pounds per person per year to four."2
During the same period, the so-called "healthier" use of margarines, shortenings and refined oils rose in popularity by about 400 percent! (Simultaneously, both sugar and processed food consumption increased by about 60 percent.)
It's interesting that in comparison the LA content of fat tissue among Europeans is not only lower than that of most Americans, but also today theirs is about where ours was in 1970.3

You Are What You Eat. No, Really.

An article in Online Today, "Healthy Animal Fats"4 expounds on what you get when you choose refined vegetable oils, which require intense processing, both mechanically and chemically.
The procedure as well as the materials used should be a harbinger of what's to come to your health when you ingest virtually anything that's undergone this process:
"The seed pulp and oil are put through a hexane solvent bath, which is produced by the refining of crude petroleum oil.
Impurities are removed by treating the oil with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) or soda ash (sodium carbonate). Finally, bleaching and deodorizing are done to remove impurities and volatile compounds.
All this chemical concoction renders a product that has been linked to widespread inflammation within the body, elevated blood triglycerides, and an impaired insulin response."

Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fats: What's the Difference?

Over decades, changes have taken place correlating to the amounts of omega-3 fats(EPA and DHA) and the omega-6 fats we eat. Research indicates our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed a balanced mix of omega-3 and omega-6 fats and were largely free of modern diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.5
Then the industrial revolution in the mid-1800s generated a shift toward omega-6 fats and the manufacture of vegetable oils that rose with every decade. Today, studies show that the ratio is as high as 25:1 in favor of omega-6 fats.6
To define polyunsaturated omega-6 and omega-3 fats, "poly" means many, which references multiple bonds. Because our bodies can't produce them, we need to obtain them via our diets. That's why they're called "essential," and they have critical roles in our bodies, from clotting blood to fighting inflammation.

This Is Your Body on the Wrong Fats: What 'Fake' Oils Do

Research shows that before 1920, heart disease was a rarity. In 2012, The Atlantic cited a chart published by The New England Journal of Medicine, which lays out the top 10 causes of death from 1900 to 2010.
Two things are remarkable: Mortality dropped dramatically overall, but heart disease and cancer soared to the No. 1 and 2 spots.7 The Atlantic credited part of the increase in these diseases to sedentary lifestyles.
But increased omega-6 fat consumption and the neglect of omega-3s has taken a toll, especially in terms of inflammation and heart disease. While "Big Pharma"  and doctors are well aware that patients could simply be encouraged to reduce their omega-6 intake, they instead recommend and prescribe drugs and over-the-counter remedies.
The breakdown is fairly straightforward: Cancer and heart disease combined sent 18 percent of the population to their graves. In 2010, that number jumped to 63 percent.  Another way to put it is that out of every 100,000 people, then and now, the ratio of deaths tips from 201 to 380.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition8 focused on this imbalance of fatty acids in a study that offered a harrowing list of increased inflammatory diseases as a direct result, including: 
Obesity
Irritable bowel syndrome
Inflammatory bowel disease
Cancer
Cardiovascular disease
Metabolic syndrome
Asthma
Macular degeneration
Psychiatric disorders
Autoimmune diseases

Poison Plus Nutrition Does Not Equal a Balanced Diet

Omega-3 and omega-6 fats have different functions, particularly when it comes to inflammation. As one study termed it, omega-6s can cause inflammation, while omega-3s fight it.9 However:
"Inflammation is essential for our survival. It helps protect our bodies from infection and injury, but it can also cause severe damage and contribute to disease when the inflammatory response is inappropriate or excessive."10
So how can you keep from eating something that's bad for you, especially when the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is often so quick to defend foods that have been proven to be clearly misrepresented? One way is to be aware of the ingredients in the processed foods you eat—and to avoid processed foods altogether if you can.
Guyenet's research on how the wrong fats change our bodies is compounded by the fact that vegetable oil (which weighs in on the omega-6 side) is found in so many foods, and not just margarine andshortening. It's in crackers, packaged snacks, coffee creamers, fried foods, pre-made baked goods and ready-to-use dough and pie shells.
Besides vegetable oil, there are many other pitfalls that can throw off the balance your body needs in the world of nutrition. Sugar and soda are two of the biggest problems, but there are other things that can sideline a good nutrition plan. That's why arming yourself with the information you and your family need to prevent disease and maintain health and wellness is so important. Here are some things you can do now to take control of your health and enjoy life:
  • Increase your intake of omega-3 fats from sources such as sardines, anchovies, wild-caught Alaskan salmon and high-quality krill oil.
  • Use first-pressed virgin olive oil and butter and, for cooking, coconut oil is great because it doesn't burn quickly, and contains multiple health advantages.
  • Read labels carefully. Bone up on terms like "hydrogenation," "trans fats," "high fructose corn syrup" and Red 40 food dye.
  • Avoid processed foods, including processed vegetable oils.
  • Eat real food, not processed and not fake. "Real" foods include organically grown vegetables, fruits in moderation, sprouts, pastured meat and eggs, herbs, and wild-caught Alaskan salmon, for a start.
  • Look for and use organic fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs and other foods as often as possible.

Eat lots of Sweet Potatoes – Quite Interesting Indeed!!




It’s been said that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, made dry land, planted a garden, made animals and fish. . .  All before making a human. He made and provided all the foods we’d need to eat before we were born. These are best and more powerful when eaten raw. We’re such slow learners. . .

God left us a great clue as to what foods help what part of our body!
God’s Pharmacy! Amazing!
