A Simple Way to Help Ward Off Mental Decline and Dementia

yoga for brainWhen you're old and still have a sharp-as-a-tack mind, you'll be glad you did this today. Brain scans show it's better than mind training to deliver expanded signaling among attention-controlling parts of your brain. Also calms and focuses your mind while energizing your body.

Yoga Benefits Your Brain Function and Mental Health

Story at-a-glance

  • Yoga has been shown to combat cognitive decline. In one 12-week long study, volunteers who did yoga improved memory and mood to a greater degree than those who performed conventional brain training
  • Regular yoga practice has also been shown to have a positive effect on mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and schizophrenia
  • Other health benefits from regular yoga practice include improved immune function, reduced risk for migraines and heart disease, improved sexual performance, better sleep and reduced stress

By Dr. Mercola
Low-impact exercises such as yoga have a number of benefits. Not only can it provide the physical benefits of exercise, yoga may also help stave off cognitive decline, according to a recent study of older adults with early warning signs of waning memory.
While I believe most benefit from high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for optimal health, there's no doubt that yoga can also be beneficial. It has mental, emotional and even spiritual benefits that can be very helpful for those struggling with stress-related health problems.
Yoga can be viewed as a form of moving meditation that demands your full attention as you gently shift your body from one asana (yoga position) to another.
As you learn new ways of moving and responding to your body, your mind and emotions may shift and change as well. In a sense, you not only become more physically flexible, but your mental outlook and approach to life may gain some needed flexibility as well.

Yoga Helps Mitigate Cognitive Decline

Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that physical activity helps keep your mind sharp with age, and this goes for activities such as yoga as well. Overall, inactivity is enemy No. 1 if you seek to optimize your cognitive function. According to The New York Times:1
"There also is growing evidence that combining physical activity with meditation might intensify the benefits of both pursuits.
In an interesting study2 ... people with depression who meditated before they went for a run showed greater improvements in their mood than people who did either of those activities alone.
But many people do not have the physical capacity or taste for running or other similarly vigorous activities. So for the new study ... researchers ... decided to test whether yoga, a relatively mild, meditative activity, could alter people's brains and fortify their ability to think.3,4
They began by recruiting 29 middle-aged and older adults ... who ... were anxious about the state of their memories and who, during evaluations ... were found to have mild cognitive impairment, a mental condition that can be a precursor to eventual dementia.
The volunteers also underwent a sophisticated type of brain scan that tracks how different parts of the brain communicate with one another."
The participants were divided into two groups. One group enrolled in a brain-training program consisting of mental exercises for one hour per week. They were also asked to practice at home for 15 minutes a day.
The second group participated in a Kundalini yoga class for one hour per week. They were also taught Kirtan Kriya meditation, which involves the use of mantras and fluid hand movements. They were asked to practice this meditation at home for 15 minutes each day.

Yoga Outperforms Standard Brain Training

After 12 weeks, all subjects again underwent cognitive tests and brain scans. Overall, all participants had improved to some degree, but the yoga group not only fared slightly better on memory tests, they also reported improvements in their mood. As reported in the featured article:
"The brain scans in both groups displayed more communication now between parts of their brains involved in memory and language skills.
Those who had practiced yoga, however, also had developed more communication between parts of the brain that control attention, suggesting a greater ability now to focus and multitask.
In effect, yoga and meditation had equaled and then topped the benefits of 12 weeks of brain training. 'We were a bit surprised by the magnitude' of the brain effects, said Dr. Helen Lavretsky ... who oversaw the study."

Why Yoga Is so Beneficial for Your Brain

Over the years, a number of studies have honed in on the brain benefits of yoga. For example, studies have found that:
Twenty minutes of Hatha yoga improves your brain function (speed and accuracy of mental processing) to a greater degree than 20 minutes of aerobic exercise (jogging).5,6 Potential mechanisms include enhanced self-awareness and reduced stress.
Yoga helps improve mental health, including psychiatric disorders like depression, anxiety, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and schizophrenia.7,8,9,10
Some of the studies suggest yoga can have a similar effect to antidepressants and psychotherapy.
Yoga helps improve teenagers' emotional resilience and ability to manage anger. As noted by yoga educator and writer Iona Smith:11
"During adolescence, the frontal lobes of the brain (the seat of language and reason) are still being formed, leaving teens to overly rely on their amygdala (the seat of emotions) ...
The brain's malleability during adolescence marks a crucial stage in both cognitive and emotional development.
Luckily, researchers are now able to paint a clearer picture of some of the factors that allow students to thrive throughout high school and into adulthood, such as self-awareness, managing distressing emotions, empathy, and navigating relationships smoothly.
When students hone these skills, they are not only happier and healthier emotionally, but are also better able to focus on academics."
By improving stress-related imbalances in your nervous system, yoga can help relieve a range of symptoms found in common mental health disorders.
Researchers also believe yoga can be helpful for conditions like epilepsy, chronic pain, depression, anxiety and PTSD by increasing brain chemicals like gamma amino-butyric acid (GABA).12

Other Mind-Body Benefits of Yoga

Other studies have demonstrated that regular yoga practice can impart a number of different physical, mental and emotional benefits, including the ones listed below.13,14,15,16
One explanation for yoga's wide-ranging effects is that it actually alters genetic expression — through its beneficial effects on your mind! In fact, the relaxation response triggered by meditative practices has been shown to affect at least 2,209 genes.17
Improved immune function18
Improved sleep19,20
Reduced risk for migraines21
Lowered risk of hypertension and heart disease22,23
Lowered cortisol (stress hormone) level by down regulating hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and calming sympathetic nervous system24
Improved sexual performance and satisfaction in both sexes25,26

How Yoga Aids Weight Loss and Promotes Good Health

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, yoga has also been shown to aid weight loss. In one study,27 overweight yoga participants lost an average of 5 pounds whereas the non-yoga group gained 13 pounds. This held true even when accounting for differences in diet. Typically, HIIT is the most effective for weight loss, and the key to its effectiveness is the intensity. So how can the effectiveness of yoga — which is the converse of HIIT in terms of intensity — be explained?
According to Tiffany Field, Ph.D., director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, yoga's benefits are related to the fact that it does the opposite of more strenuous exercise. Rather than boosting your heart rate and stimulating your nervous system, yoga puts you in a parasympathetic state that lowers both your blood pressure and heart rate, and this helps promote a positivecascade of health effects.
This makes sense if you consider the adverse biological effects of stress. By promoting systemic inflammation, chronic stress can be a factor in everything from weight gain to high blood pressure and heart disease. It's also been shown to trigger the onset of dementia. What's worse, stress-induced weight gain typically involves an increase in belly fat, which is the most dangerous fat for your body to accumulate as it increases your risk for cardiovascular disease.
Stress actually alters the way fat is deposited because of the specific hormones and other chemicals your body produces when you're stressed. For example, recent research28 shows that chronic stress stimulates your body to produce betatrophin, a protein that blocks an enzyme that breaks down body fat. So by reducing stress you reduce inflammation, and along with it your risk for any number of health problems, including stubborn weight.
A 2011 review29 of published clinical studies on yoga also concluded that yoga movements stimulate skin pressure receptors that boost activity in your brain and vagus nerve, both of which influence the production and release of various hormones. As vagus nerve activity increases, the levels of stress hormones like cortisol decrease. It also triggers the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a role not only in your mood, but also in appetite control and sleep patterns.

The Importance of a Comprehensive Fitness Program

Yoga and other simple restorative exercises tone and strengthen your body, increase circulation and oxygen flow, energize you for the day and help you unwind in the evening. However, studies support the use of yoga to strengthen brain function and improve common psychiatric disorders (along with many other health benefits, including pain relief and increased flexibility and strength).
I believe it's important to incorporate a variety of exercises into your routine for optimal results. Ideally, you'll want acomprehensive fitness program that includes HIIT and resistance training, along with flexibility- and core-building exercises like yoga. Daily non-exercise movement is also important, and simply walking more each day can go a long way toward warding off many common health problems.

Fact or Myth: Does Yoga Protect Against Heart Disease?

Yoga is an ancient Indian mind-body practice that combines the physical with the mental and spiritual to strengthen the body and the mind and reduce stress.

This is a FACT…
Yoga is an ancient Indian mind-body practice that combines the physical with the mental and spiritual to strengthen the body and the mind and reduce stress. Over the last few decades it has spread globally and taken the Western world by storm. Yoga definitely has something for everyone, as there are countless styles to choose from—from vigorous Ashtanga flows to more meditative Integral yoga practices. But how does yoga compare to more traditional workouts, like bicycling or brisk walking? And does yoga protect against heart disease?
According to a 2014 meta-analysis of 37 randomized controlled studies made up of 2,768 people and published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, yoga offers the same protective benefits against heart disease as more traditional forms of exercise do.
Yoga poses series. Tree Pose. Vrikshasana.Yoga Improves Heart Disease Risk Factors
Researchers from the United States and the Netherlands measured yoga’s effect on heart disease against the effect of traditional exercise and the effect of no exercise on heart disease. Their systematic review turned up some interesting findings.
While no exercise had zero consequence on lowering heart disease risk, yoga improved the following markers:
  • A reduction in body mass index (BMI) of 0.77 kg/m2
  • A reduction in systolic blood pressure of 5.21 mm Hg
  • A reduction in diastolic blood pressure of 4.9 mm Hg
  • A reduction in LDL cholesterol of 12.14 mg/dl
  • An increase in HDL cholesterol of 3.20 mg/dl
  • A reduction in total cholesterol of 18.48 mg/dl
  • A reduction in body weight of just over 5 pounds
  • A reduction in heart rates of 5.27 beats per minute
Patients already diagnosed with coronary artery disease showed dramatic improvement in cholesterol levels when a yoga practice was implemented alongside a regimen of cholesterol-lowering drugs.
How Does Yoga Protect Against Heart Disease Compared to Traditional Forms of Exercise?
Very well! Researchers noted that yoga offers a cardioprotective benefit on par with brisk walking and bicycling, and is an excellent alternative for those who can’t engage in traditional forms of exercise.
Researchers also noted that the mechanism behind this effect is still unclear, but could be linked to yoga’s ability to lower stress levels, “leading to positive impacts on neuroendocrine status, metabolic and cardio-vagal function.”
All you need is a mat and your own body weight to start practicing yoga today, and to begin enjoying its heart-healthy benefits.

A Short and Simple Physical Exercise for Your Brain

This post is on Healthwise

Balance Brain Hemispheres

A simple exercise with unusual results was revealed in a Los Angeles CBS News report that has an MD, a Yale neurobiologist, an occupational therapist, educators, and parents endorsing it. The results are mental and emotional, and it's called SuperBrain Yoga. Positive results are experienced by the learning disabled, ADD and autistic children as well as older Alzheimer's victims.
But it's useful for any kind of brain fog or dullness, even emotional instability. It can improve memory, focus, and make you a little smarter. It works for everyone regardless of mental condition.

How to Do SuperBrain Yoga

In the morning, facing where the sun rises with your feet pointing straight ahead, spread them apart about shoulder width. Grab your you right earlobe with the thumb and finger of your left hand. Cross over your left arm and do the same using your right hand on the left earlobe. Then squat as fully as you can, breathing in. That seems counterintuitive, but that's what you do. Breathe in as you squat, breathe out as you stand.
The breathing needs to be synchronized with the squats. Continue this motion repetitively while holding both earlobes for three minutes. That may be too much at first, so start with one or two minutes. One can go up to five minutes, but three is good enough. This can be done by anyone at any age and should be done on a daily basis until the fog lifts!
Positive Effects on the Mind
Los Angeles physician Dr. Eric Robins says that the brain cells and neurons are energized with this simple exercise. He prescribes it to his patients and has had excellent results. One example of this is a youngster doing poorly in school. After being introduced to the exercise, that child went on to become an "A" student.
According to the Yale neurobiologist Dr. Eugenius Ang, the earlobes grabbed are acupuncture points that stimulate neural pathways in the brain. The brain's hemispheres are in opposite sides of the earlobes. Using opposite hands for pinching the earlobes may have something to do with the way our subtle energies are arranged.
Ang showed that the results from EEG (electroencephalography) readings after doing this exercise indicate the right and left hemispheres of the brain had become synchronized. EEG readings measure the neuron firings in the brain via electrodes on the scalp, and are used to determine brain wave normalcies and abnormalities.
As Dr. Ang, who does the exercise daily states, “... in modern terms, the brain is actually lateralized.” This is an ideal but uncommon arrangement. It is something that expensive brain technology CDs attempt to do by producing audible sounds with subliminal sounds to the brain through a headset.

SuperBrain Yoga's Source

SuperBrain Yoga was introduced by pranic healing Master Koa Chok Sui's book SuperBrainYoga and taught by him personally on lecture tours. Master Sui taught other aspects of prana healing also.

Prana is another word for chi, the subtle life force energy that surrounds and permeates the body. It is the stuff of acupuncture and Qi (chi) Gong. In addition to the subtle energy aspects of prana or chi, it seems that combining a mildly aerobic exercise also helps flood the brain cells with oxygen.

It's an easy and inexpensive way to improve memory, mental clarity and focus, while assisting those with debilitating mental disorders. You can see the exercise performed in the CBS report on this page when you click "see how it's done." (link doesn't work - see below)

Superbrain Yoga® is a simple and effective technique to energize and recharge the brain. It is based on the principles of subtle energy and ear acupuncture. This powerful technique is explained in Master Choa Kok Sui's latest book Superbrain Yoga®.

Pilot studies on the effects of Superbrain Yoga® on school children include children with disabilities such as ADHD/ADD, developmental and cognitive delays, Down syndrome and specific learning disabilities. Children studied showed significant increase in academic and behavioral performance, greater class participation and improved social skills. In one study, the result of an electroencephalograph showed increased amplitude in the parieto-occipital region of the brain following the Superbrain Yoga®. This indicates increased brain electrical activity following the exercise. More studies on the effects of Superbrain Yoga® are being conducted.

Major Cause Of Breast Cancer

Don’t Fall For This
Major Cause Of Breast Cancer

These days, we know genetic mutations affect your likelihood of developing breast cancer, especially if you have mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

But like so many other cancers, diet and lifestyle also play a significant role in whether you’ll develop breast cancer. In fact, diet and lifestyle appear to be the biggest factors overall. Researchers now estimate as much as 73 percent of breast cancer is caused by diet and lifestyle choices, as opposed to genetics. That bottle of cola and that dish of ice cream had better be really good because you may end up paying a terrible price.

But lifestyle means far more than our food and exercise habits. It also includes toxins we’re exposed to, including some prescription drugs we take because doctors tell us they’re “harmless.” Right now I’m thinking of the types of hormones you might be putting in your body that could elevate your risk. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, let’s take a look at some things you can do…

5 “little” lifestyle tips that can help you
Avoid breast cancer

Lifestyle choices can have a profound affect on your health, and on how your body performs at all levels. Doctors rarely spend the time necessary to talk about these things. Be smart today, and implement this “top 5″ list.
  1. Smoking and Alcohol. If you smoke, quit as soon as possible. Studies show that women who smoked for 35 years had a 60% greater risk of serious breast health problems. And women who smoked 15 years were 34% more likely to develop abnormal breast cells. As for alcohol, drinking the stuff on a regular basis may fuel estrogen imbalances and abnormal breast cell changes. As the rest of this article will show, high estrogen levels are a major cause of breast cancer and other cancers.
  2. Exercise. Even mild or moderate exercise (i.e., 30 minutes of walking) can help move immune cells around your body, support a healthy estrogen balance, and help keep abnormal breast cells from taking root. It also promotes insulin sensitivity and a healthy weight. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Walk a little bit — ten minutes, 15 minutes. DO SOMETHING.
  3. Your Weight. Fat cells produce more estrogen. A healthy weight also benefits your cardiovascular, metabolic, and overall health. Yes, I know everyone’s tired of being nagged, but the years this can add to your life are worth all the trouble of tackling this problem.
  4. Vegetables. Eat a diet high in organic veggies, especially cruciferous and dark leafy greens. They’re chock full of crucial vitamins, antioxidants, and phytochemicals you’ve probably never heard of. Raw is better than cooked.
  5. Thermography and breast exams. Do monthly self-breast exams and an annual thermogram. A thermogram doesn’t directly diagnose cancer, but it can warn you of inflammatory hot spots that can spell trouble, up to ten years in advance of actually having cancer that can be detected. This gives you tons of time to take action.
Meanwhile, beware of this mainstream medical therapy

It’s widely documented that hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of breast cancer. Not so many years ago, doctors promoted this therapy like crazy. Nearly half of all post-menopausal women at least gave it a try — that’s a staggering number of people.

Then a big study revealed that hormone replacement therapy was clearly linked to breast cancer. It turned out it was a really bad idea to blindly trust your doctor — you know, that guy or gal who has all that schooling and knows everything.

Thousands of women promptly quit hormone replacement therapy, and within a few years the breast cancer rate plunged.

It was probably the most dramatic proof ever seen that a lifestyle choice can give you cancer. In this case the choice was a prescription drug that is not essential.

In spite of the warnings, it seems quite a few women still take hormone replacement therapy. If that describes you, take heed — you’re putting your life in danger. And that may be true even if you’re a loyal natural health fan and take “bio-identical” hormone therapy, as I’ll explain in a minute.

What is hormone replacement therapy?

Conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after menopause is a lifestyle choice and it’s something women have been choosing for decades, although far fewer women choose it now. It’s also known as menopausal hormone therapy (HT or MHT), postmenopausal hormones (PMH), or postmenopausal hormone therapy (PHT). Treatments are generally administered through a pill, topical cream, or patch.

Most conventional hormone replacement therapy is made up of progesterone or progestins (synthetic hormones that act like progesterone). In rare cases, androgens (testosterone-like male hormones) are used, along with something called Tibolone, a synthetic hormone drug that acts like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, depending on which tissue of the body it gets put into to.

Women choose HRT to replace the female hormones in their bodies that are no longer made after menopause (in general, that’s when women have lower estrogen levels). But it’s a choice that can dramatically increase your breast cancer risk as well as your risk of other cancers, even if you use it for as little as two years.

Before the big study linking it to cancer, HRT used to be a standard treatment for any woman who experienced hot flashes or other menopausal symptoms, and was believed to have long-term benefits that protected against illness like heart disease and dementia. Now we know the treatment did more harm than good, especially for older post-menopausal women.

In spite of this finding, HRT is still considered a helpful treatment for certain groups of women, such as those at high risk of heart disease (this is because some studies show estrogen may decrease heart disease risk). But it’s not clear whether the benefits outweigh the risks even for these special groups.

Why the HRT cancer risk is real

As more research on HRT surfaces, more risks are coming to light. For example, women who take estrogen supplements without the right balance of progesterone risk uterine cancer. Breast cancer risk also rises, in part because HRT can cause a breast to look denser on a mammogram, making cancer all but impossible to detect.

Worse still, not only does hormone replacement therapy elevate your risk of breast cancer, but once developed, the cancer might be more aggressive. Meaning the cancer might be more advanced once discovered, thus increasing your risk of dying from the disease.

Doctors caution that if you have a current or past history of breast, ovarian, or endometrial cancer, you should steer clear of HRT—a fact that underscores how much hormone replacement therapy supports the growth of cancer.

Here’s a sampling of some recent negative results from HRT supplementation:
  • One study of women taking estrogen-only therapy showed that one in nine women who took the therapy for three years developed a pre-cancerous change in the lining of the uterus.
  • In a Women’s Health Initiative study (WHI), those who took estrogen-progestin therapy had a higher risk of breast cancer. And the longer the hormones were used, the higher the risk. In this study, it took three years of halting hormone therapy for risk levels to return to normal.
  • In the same WHI study, it was found that women on estrogen-progestin therapy actually had a lower risk of colorectal cancer, but the cancers they did get were more likely to spread to lymph nodes or distant sites.
  • Observational studies suggest that estrogen-progestin therapy slightly increases the risk of ovarian cancer.

In general, your risk returns to normal within five years of stopping hormone replacement therapy.

What about natural alternatives to drug-company
hormone replacement therapy?

The first step to getting off hormone replacement therapy is to gradually minimize the amount you take. Use the lowest dose possible to treat your symptoms, and focus on improving other aspects of your health—by following the five tips at the beginning of this article.

Limiting stress is also an effective way to help curb menopausal symptoms. Take up yoga or practice relaxed, deep breathing or meditation. Tai chi and acupuncture may also help.

An alternative is to take bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, which appears to have a higher satisfaction rate. For example, those patients who take bio-identical hormone replacement therapy with progesterone report higher satisfaction than those who take a synthetic progestin. Same case for those taking Estriol, a bio-identical form of estrogen, which reacts within the body differently than estrogens found in conventional hormone replacement therapy. The latter are not exactly the same as the natural hormones your own body manufactures.

It makes sense to me that bio-identical hormones would be safer, but even so this type of therapy remains controversial. Having spent years recommending the man-made hormones, mainstream medicine has now done a complete about face and says ANY estrogen supplement — man-made or bio-identical — may increase cancer risk.

I am anything but an expert, but I do know that exposure to estrogen does raise cancer risk. For this reason, the more pregnancies a woman has, the lower her breast cancer risk, because estrogen levels drop during pregnancy. Breast cancer risk is directly related to the number of monthly cycles a woman has during her lifetime, since estrogen levels peak during a certain part of the cycle. Pregnancy arrests this process and leads to lower cumulative lifetime exposure to estrogen.

I’ve also read (and, again, I’m not an expert) that the symptoms of menopause can be managed by diet and proper food supplements. Doctors who advocate this approach say that the annoying symptoms of modern menopause are largely a product of our bad dietary habits. Like other symptoms of aging including diabetes and heart disease, we’re inflicting this problem on ourselves.

In the end … avoid the risk

Controlled trials are needed before we have more conclusive results about the risks of hormone replacement therapy, but for now, it appears much safer to go with what’s natural. Especially since every time researchers learn more about hormone therapy, the message seems to be that it’s not that great after all.

So as long as there are alternatives, your best bet is to try them first.

Take Ten Steps for a Cancer-Free Life, Part I

Wednesday, March 18, 2009 by: Barbara L. Minton

(NaturalNews) Cancer will be the number one killer in the world by the year 2010, overtaking the spot now held by heart disease, according to a recent report from Associated Press. International health experts foresee a doubling in the global rate of cancer deaths by 2030. Cancer diagnoses have been steadily rising around the globe and are expected to hit 12 million this year, with deaths from cancer logging in at 7 million. By 2030 this appalling toll will hit 27 million diagnoses and 17 million deaths.

What can you do to make sure you are not among the gruesome statistics?

Assuming you do not smoke or drink excessively, here is a list of the top 10 steps for avoiding cancer. Anyone who has had cancer can use these steps to prevent a recurrence.

Make high quality food a priority

The quality of the food supply is very poor, being grown in depleted soil, transported long distances, stored, processed, and packaged. There is very little nutrition left in such food. Yet high quality nutrients are required by the body to keep it free of cancer. Food is a lot more than just calories. It is the bedrock of the body's defense, so only the highest quality, most nutrient packed food should be eaten. High quality food is not about what tastes the best, but what will make you feel the best.

It is up to us to be as proactive as we can when dealing with what life has offered if we hope to retain our health. Eating locally and organically grown and produced food is the best way to get maximum nutrition. Since everyone does not have access to this kind of food, the next best thing is to make a commitment to eat whole foods that retain their integrity and have not been processed. Whole foods are things like apples, celery, potatoes and chicken legs, items that have not been altered from their natural state.

Food prepared at home is best because restaurant food is low on nutrition and high on toxic chemicals. But stay away from packaged foods and other products of food technology. They are processed, low on nutrients, and usually chocked full of chemicals. They have been created to benefit the food company that manufactures them, not the person who has to eat them. A plant based diet that places primary emphasis on vegetables and fruits eaten raw offers the highest level of cancer preventing compounds. A diet that places primary emphasis on processed carbohydrates like pancakes, bread, cake and snack foods offers the lowest level of cancer protection.

If avoiding cancer is the goal, eat the highest quality food that can be found and afforded. When times are tough, think of an investment in high quality food as something that can never be taken from you, and will never lose its value. High quality food will enhance your looks and appeal to a much greater extent than a new outfit, hairdo or manicure. There is nothing that creates a radiant appearance like the glow of good health.

A diet that frequently includes known cancer fighting food is of tremendous value in the quest to remain cancer free. The Budwig protocol is the only well documented food cure for cancer. It consists of flax oil mixed with cottage cheese. Other known potent cancer fighters are berries, apples eaten with their seeds, almonds, Brazil nuts, broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, green leafy vegetables, beans and other legumes, garlic, tea, grapes, red wine, avocados, and tomatoes. Most culinary herbs have cancer fighting properties so use them whenever possible. Turmeric, ginger, rosemary, cumin, and cayenne are among the richest in cancer fighting compounds.

Stay as chemically free as possible

When the body is chemicalized, the immune system is so busy dealing with the toxic chemical onslaught that it cannot do the jobs it was meant to do. One job of the immune system is to make sure the cancerous cells produced by the body every day are identified and eliminated before they can turn into a full blown cancer. The immune system perceives toxic chemicals as just what they are, foreign invaders that do not exist in nature. It responds by trying to oust these invaders from the body. While it is busy doing that, a few cancerous cells can slip by unnoticed and a cancer can begin.

We are living in a time of chemical assault like never before. Our food is full of chemicals, the air we breathe is polluted, and the water supply contains industrial waste and pharmaceutical residues. Our personal care and household products are a toxic chemical soup. Add to that the threat from electro magnetic fields (EMFS) such as produced by power lines, computers, cell phones and even electric alarm clocks, and the total environmental threat we deal with on a daily basis is mind boggling.

Anyone who has been on the standard American diet, taking prescription drugs, and using personal care and household products from traditional retail outlets has a huge store of toxins in the body that need to be eliminated before they can contribute to the development of cancer. This can be accomplished by practicing yoga and using the breathing techniques prescribed by yoga masters, or by deep tissue massage. For the first few times, each should be followed by a general purpose antioxidant supplement like R-Lipoic Acid, and the drinking of plenty of pure water. Both will flush out toxins. Cilantro juice is another way to flush out many toxins including heavy metals. Follow the juice with chlorella or IP6 to escort them from the body. There are many other detox formulas on the market.

It is relatively easy to find personal care, cosmetic, and household products that are free of toxic chemicals. Non-toxic products can be easily ordered on line and shipped to your home. Install a water purification system, preferably one that uses reverse osmosis to get the toxins out of your drinking water and the water in which you bathe. These are also available online. Let fresh air into your home or workplace whenever possible. Use houseplants to keep the air in your environment free of pollutants. One medium sized houseplant for every 100 square foot of space should do the trick. Larger plants provide even more natural air cleaning.

Do the best you can to rid your environment of EMFs. For starters, never sit with a laptop computer on your lap. Get rid of those old style televisions and computer monitors that emit huge amounts of radiation. Throw out your microwave. If you aren't buying packaged processed foods, you won't need it. For a quick heating device, get an inexpensive toaster oven. Move the alarm clock from next to the bed to across the room. Do not use a cell phone unless you have to, and then use it only with a headset or in the speakerphone mode. Never carry electronic gadgetry mounted on your body.

Learn to read labels. If you do not recognize the ingredients as compounds that occur in nature, do not buy the product.

Keeping yourself and your family as free of toxins as possible requires a new way of thinking and approaching life. One of the first priorities for making a purchase should be how much the product will add to the quest for a long and healthy life. When thoughts go in this direction you will begin to see how people are being manipulated and used by many of the large corporations. Producers that make products containing toxic chemicals are showing no regard for their customer's health or the well being of their families. They will use people however then can to enrich their bottom lines. As people become aware of this, their criteria for a purchase evolves to the point where they naturally purchase only products that will enhance their health.

Run away from prescription and over-the-counter drugs

Socrates said, "Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food". If he were alive today he would probably be appalled by a society that is tightly in the grip of pharmaceutical companies. These companies sell patented toxic chemicals that do little or nothing to keep people well and healthy on any sustained basis. Their products mask symptoms that should be given attention. Symptoms are a wake up call that something is wrong. They need to be traced back to their cause, so the cause can be addressed and corrected, not covered up and ignored.

Whether it is a prescribed medication or an over-the-counter drug, the affect on the body is the same as with the toxic chemicals in food and other products. Drugs are lab created and do not exist in nature. If you put a drug into your body, your immune system has to deal with it as though it too is a foreign invader. Drugs raise the level of toxicity in the body and must be detoxified by a liver already stressed from trying to deal with the high level of environmental toxins.

No one gets better taking pharmaceuticals, and there is no healing. The side effects that are produced by one drug frequently lead to more prescriptions for more drugs in what becomes a vicious cycle. If people take enough drugs their bodies become chemical waste dumps where cancer can easily flourish. The reliance on drugs has diverted attention from the real issue, which is how to care for ourselves and keep ourselves healthy. Once people become truly health conscious, they resent the drug companies because they know that these companies do not have people's best interest at heart with the products they sell. They are just like the companies that make chemicalized foods, trying to get people's money without given anything of value in return. People who have wised up to the harmful effects of patent medicines see the constant barrage of commercials for drugs as blatant manipulation and brainwashing.

There are natural alternatives to drugs that do not just mask symptoms but actually produce healing. There is an abundance of natural compounds that can keep people in good health. These substances leave the immune systems and liver strong and able to provide protection from cancer.

Keep your gut healthy and happy

People have trouble with their stomachs and digestive tracts and write it off as an inevitable result of stress or aging. Yet many natural healers say death begins in the gut, a statement that underscores how vital the health of the gut is for overall well being. When the gut is not healthy, food cannot be properly processed and assimilated into the body, leaving people unable to have access to the wealth of nutrients that high quality food provides. Since it is these nutrients that provide protection from cancer, it becomes imperative that gut health be a priority in any anti-cancer effort.

The deterioration of the digestive system occurs over a period of years and can be signaled by sounds of a thunderstorm coming from the gut. Other symptoms include headaches, increased susceptibility to infection, gas, bloating, constipation, indigestion, and falling energy levels. Failure to address declining gut function creates an opportunity for cancer and other degenerative diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, lupus, arthritis, and psoriasis. Many chronic diseases start with gut deterioration.

The four pounds of bacteria that live in the gut are the backbone of the immune system. They are our unpaid personal bodyguards, willing to go to war against aberrant cells, bacteria, viruses, pathogens and foreign invaders to defend us. They also help out with digestion and make sure nutrients are absorbed so they can be used by the body to keep it healthy.

One of the worst things that can happen to ruin the happy relationship between people and their bacteria is antibiotics. They kill off the bodyguards along with the enemies, leaving no defense against unfriendly bacteria that would like to inhabit the intestinal tract. After a round of antibiotics, it is essential to take probiotics to reestablish friendly bacteria in the gut. Kefir, a culture that can be started in any kind of milk including coconut milk, offers powerful protection to the gut and as a result, to the entire body. Kefir culture is available online.

Even if no antibiotics have been taken, the herd of friendly bacteria in the gut can become depleted to the point where it can no longer do what it is meant to do. Pesticides in food are lethal to intestinal bacteria. Even if the skins of fruits and vegetables are well washed, pesticides remain because they work systemically and will be contained in the body of the produce. Chlorine is meant to kill bacteria in water and will kill off the bacteria in the gut as well. Eventually the gut becomes so depleted that it will be as though antiobiotics have been taken even if they have not. When this happens, unfriendly microorganisms are free to set up shop in the digestive tract.

Probiotics are friendly bacteria similar to the bacteria found in the guts of breastfed infants who have been provided this natural protection against many diseases by their mothers. Almost every supplement company sells probiotics in capsule form. Although they don't work as well as kefir at restoring depleted levels of bacteria, they are good for maintenance of a healthy digestive system. Yogurt will also help preserve the health of the digestive tract once it has been established, but it won't do much to help repopulate a digestive tract after antibiotic use or years of general neglect.

Restore declining hormones to optimal levels

For women and for men, achieving and maintaining hormonal balance is probably the single greatest intervention that can be taken to preserve health. Hormonal decline can start as early as the late 20's for women and the mid 30's for men. It is an opening door that leads to aging and degenerative diseases like cancer. While women and men have their hormones in abundance and in balance, they are vital, vibrant and reproductive. Nature has a use for them and wants to keep them around. When hormones decline and are not replaced, a powerful message is sent to nature saying these people are no longer necessary in the great scheme of life.

Hormones control mental and physical well being. Energy level, metabolism, brain functioning, skeletal integrity, mood, motivation, and zest for life are orchestrated by the hormones. All the hormones work together to keep us healthy and functioning at our best. If one hormone is not up to par, repercussions will manifest through all the body systems. If people do not feel well and at their best a large part of the time, chances are pretty good that at least one hormone is not at the level it should be. If they have trouble sleeping, feel depressed, gain weight without increasing food intake, have low energy during some part of the day, or have lost interest in sex or cannot perform, their hormone levels are probably declining and out of balance. For anyone who already has cancer or any other degenerative disease, hormonal imbalance is almost a sure thing. Until hormones are replenished and balanced, real sustainable recovery will be impossible.

The only way to achieve hormone balance is with bioidentical hormone replacement that restores hormone levels to where they were at the prime of life. Teenagers and people in their early 20's usually feel good and energetic most of the time. They do not have cancer. This is because they have a full complement of balanced hormones.

Achieving this level of hormonal balance and the vibrant health, joy of living and freedom from worrying about cancer and other diseases that goes with it, requires the help of a physician trained in anti-aging medicine or hormone balancing. Many traditional doctors have never heard of bioidentical hormones or if they have, they will advise their patients not to use them because they are not drugs. Since many bioidentical hormones are made at compounding pharmacies, this is a good place to start the search for hormone balance. Ask who they recommend.
